Bamfords in Scarborough

Fish was small for the price, not cooked to order, was very greasy - I would aviod... other reviews seem to show the same view - most likely a sinking ship, just cashing on the tourist trade, who will never return again.

Come here if you like your chips hard 👍

Absolutely shocking , came here for dinner and the boy sat at the till had the most disgusting attitude , definitely not welcoming and was sat glaring as we ate food , will not be returning ever !!

Grabbed fish and chips fish was quite greasy but chips were great.

Tried to go there Monday and Thursday each time it was closed so iam assuming it's closed down, been a fews times over the years but haven't been in now for the past 2 years.

Nipped here staff were welcoming place looked clean … i had chips & scratching my boyfriend had fish chips & curry sauce enjoyed fish & curry sauce was very nice thank u

Gutted, we came here to visit for a weeks holiday and everytime we come to Scarborough we always have a meal in this place, and we was gutted to find it closed during our whole stay even though it was peak season.

Went here for something to eat on Saturday 7th may 2022 and all I can say is avoid the place food was terrible. Had two 1/4 pound cheese burgers and a large portion of chips ! I think the food tray the burgers was served in was fresher than the burger. Bun was dry, burger tasteless and also dry, asked if they had any sauce on etc to be told no had to pay extra for that. So 35p for a little pod of sauce. Glad I did as gave the burger a bit of moisture ! And the large chips they was brown and hard like they was cooked the previous day and refried to sell just awful food

We ate in the rear cafe which is totally spotless and has a traditional vibe about it..... proper brown chips for a change, gorgeous batter and fresh cod... Best we've had in Scarborough by a country mile Our 2 little doggies were welcome as well.... 100% recommended

My disabled wife and myself have just been kicked out because we only wanted drinks...despite several tables being empty . Shocking attitude.

Only the takeaway was open, but at least they bothered to open, unlike most of the other fish & chip places on the front, on the day we visited. Ordered a 'Large' chips, which was the smallest 'Large' portion I've ever seen. Chips were rotten, and while it was only lunchtime, they tasted like they'd been cooked much earlier. Somewhere to avoid in future.

Memories of 4 generations of our family having fish and chips at Bamfords. It’s an icon for us, and a trip to Scarborough has never passed without a visit to Bamfords. Great to see the business still going. Keep it up!

Amazing place gorgeous food friendly staff the girl who served us was brilliant nothing was too much for her even when it was busy and she was clearly understaffed well done 10/10 brilliant and Recommended highly

I think there’s an unwritten rule that says if you’re having a day out to the seaside, you have to have fish & chips for lunch. So we did. I had a shortlist of possible places picked up from internet recommendations. First place we tried was full. Next along was Bamfords. It was empty. Literally. Did folk know something we didn’t? Well, there was only one way to find out. We both ordered the standard size fish & chips. Good crisp batter on the cod. Decent bit of fish. Chips were OK but only OK. It was all decent enough and ensured our compliance with the unwritten rule. All that was left was to comply with the other unwritten rule of going to the seaside. So, we popped across the road for cones of soft ice cream

Running late for lunch after a morning dodging the rain and dived into the cafe..thought we had made a big mistake when we saw the prices on the menu!! but it was too late really to go anywhere else so we begrudgingly ordered adult and kids fish and chips...so glad we did..service was great and the quality was fantastic..possibly one of the best fish and chips we have had..well worth the money!!

Visited today & opted for takeaway as it was such a lovely day. Asked for cod, as advertised on the menu, told by the assistant that they do cod, so ordered "standard' fish & chips at nearly £7 a portion, also had mushy peas & asked for pickled onion from the menu only to be told they haven't had any onions for ages. The assistant wasn't wearing a face covering & neither was the person frying, there was also a man behind the fryer in outdoor clothing, again, no face covering. The fish was small, peas were tinned rather then traditional mushy peas & the chips were soggy & undercooked. Although it was all very hot, we were very disappointed with the quality.

How is it possible to produce such horrible chips? They should be crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside - some chip fryers can do it- why not Bamfords? The fish was fine but small. The price was exorbitant given the poor quality. Never again!!,!!!

We went for lunch, beautiful food served very quickly. Waitress and staff so very polite and helpful. Lovely service.

On Saturday 31st July whilst on a stayover in Scarborough,We decided to try Bamfords for our lunch. The Cafe isn't very big but all the tables were spaced well apart. All with wipeable table cloths. The waitress was very friendly & quickly took our order. All condiments came on a tray which was covered & our cutlery were wrapped in serviettes then inside a plastic bag. The meals were freshly cooked. I opted for the standard Haddock & Chips at £8.30 whilst the hubby opted for job sausage & Chips at £7.95. Along with two large cokes, total bill was £19.75. The Chips were delicious & despite the fish looking very much on the small side, it was extremely tasty & filling. Their cafe is on the side street to the right of the take away but well signposted. Definitely worth a visit if your looking for lovely fish & chips.

We were asked, on arrival, for a contact number to aid if track and trace should be necessary. Service was prompt and efficient. The food was just lovely. Fish fresh this morning, really tasty chips, bread and butter and a pot of fresh tea. A return trip is definitely on the cards.

5* for hygiene inside the dining area. The cutlery was brought in bags and so was the salt and vinegar although the server wasn’t wearing any PPE. The toilets weren’t cleaned after we used them as we had used them a couple of times though. The food wasn’t very good. My fish tasted fishy so I left it but everyone else’s (out of 3 that had fish) was ok. Some of the chips were raw in the middle but we ate most of them being starving after a long journey. Prices a bit high for what we got to be honest. I think next time we will get some to take away and try somewhere else. I think the effort was there just it wasn’t great food.

Walked in very basic but we decided to eat here as a family . We all asked for scraps with our meals was told the owner won’t allow them in the restaurant but does in the shop very strange so wasn’t allowed them. The coffees were stone cold and my brother never got his bread with his order . My mum wanted a chip butty and was given 2 slices of white bread as her chip butty ... where was the butty? Poor service , anemic fish and chips . Never got my scraps because we choose to eat in and they knew I wanted them but never came due to owners orders . Do not recommend a sham over priced thinks it’s something it isn’t , poor customer service not worth the visit .

Decided to go for fish and chips here as I've had them from here before, but this time was very disappointed, the fish wasn't too bad although a bit small, but the chips were hard. This is a shame as they used to be excellent.

I’m 60 and have used Bamfords most of my life on trips to Scarborough. Today was my first visit for about 3 years, and definitely not as good as years past. Winking Willys has apparently bought it so no longer Bamfords owned. Would think twice about visiting again.

First Class, Friendly Staff, Very Good Value Indeed.

Probably the worst fish and chip shop in the world! Asked the chef what kind of fish we were served and he thought it was cod or haddock, fish was slimy and didn’t taste or look like either. No wonder we was lucky to get seated in a quiet restaurant on a bank holiday!!

Wondered in today in need of loo coffee and a baby needing a feed totally feeling out of my comfort zone, the lady beind the till was lovely, poilte and totally understood my situation. Me and my other half had some chips I finally sat with a coffee and nursed my new born and the lovely lady asked if all was OK. Chips were lovely and coffee was spot on staff were lovely aswell thank you x x x

Bank holiday weekend at lunch time and the restaurant is empty should of given us some clues but been many time before so hoped it would be nice Price increase is astronomical to our last visit. Was told it's under new management and you can tell. Not allowed crisppys in the restaurant Curry sauce £2 for the tiniest jug Coffee was watered down that much that if it had a lid on could of passed as hot water. Will not be returning. On a plus side, napkins are better quality

Came today to the smaller chip shop. Asked for 2 cod and chips. They gave us haddock and tried to make out it was cod. It had skin on and smelt Terrible. I asked at the counter upon receiving the haddock if it was again cod to be told it was. I went back after smelling it and told them it wasn’t right. They said to me ‘well if you’ve never had fresh fish’ I stopped them there and told them I’m from Whitby and me and my partner are both chefs and I pregnant and I aren’t eating that. I then received a refund the worse fish and chips I’ve even seen and smelt and the worst customer service ever. I however went to the larger one who has already told me they had no cod and got a sausage sandwich instead.

Popped here on a walk on the seafront on our first trip to Scarborough. Just got some chips; lovely they were too. Quite a small portion for the 'small' and 'large' options if chips - you only get more if you get it with Fish (??) so maybe a little pricey compared to others. Polite counter staff and good service.

We called into the cafe on Easter Monday and it was brilliant, The food was lovely and the staff were so friendly and helpful. We all ate well with soft drinks and the meal was less than £15 per head.

Wow what a place to visit. The food top class only went take away, staff are amazing and the chef really funny. We will be visiting again and next time we will try cafe as it’s the same chef. Best fish n chips I have had in a long time must say best little place on the sea front. Well done Bamfords

Once more we visited the delights of Scarborough. At around lunch time my wife and I headed for Bamfords fish and chip restaurant, at sand side, on the front. It's about 100yds right of the Richard III pub.

Food ok. Staff very pleasant but unfortunately do not serve Gluten Free food. When we asked the staff were not interested.

My husband and I went to Scarborough on a day trip yesterday and went to Bamford's for lunch while we were there. What a feast. For less that £10 each we had a pile of lovely chips, a big fish fillet, bread and butter and a big pot of tea. Everything was excellent and we will go again when we are in Scarborough. Would thoroughly recommend to anyone.

We always eat here when we visit Scarborough, the staff are always friendly and never rush you even at busy times. The portions are generous to say the least and always top quality. Prices are reasonable for the quality and service. I wouldn't eat anywhere else in Scarborough.

We could not resist getting fish and chips on the way home. We always enjoy them, well done batter that is so tasty. I am picky on where I go and this shop is the best in town by far. The chips are cooked well, I like a bit of colour on my chips lol. Always friendly and nothing it to much trouble. 100% recommend them.

Try the scraps on chips they are lovely special batter make them delicious. Probably one of the cheapest chippies and you get a generous portion.

Every time we visit Scarborough, we always come to Bamfords in the cafe. The service is excellent - very fast and friendly. I chose the lemon sole, and the waitress checked that they had it before finishing the order (luckily they did)! The fish was cooked to perfection - we had lemon sole, cod & scampi - all extremely fresh and tasty. The chips were great too - cooked just right. Never had a bad meal there - will definitely be back.

What a really nice lttle chippy this is.The fish was absolutely beautiful and cooked to perfection along with some well prepared chips and peas this was one of the best fish lunches we have had anywhere .The portions were enormous ,this wasnt just our opinion but several other diners also commented on the huge size of portions .The friendly attentive service is just the icing on the cake.All in all well worth a visit and we will certainly be returning any time we visit Scarborough.

my wife and i stopped for fish chips and mushy peas, what a waste of £15, chips were cold the fish had the skin left on the batter was very crispy overcooked in my opinion left a nasty taste.BOTH fish and chips went in the bin, even the seagulls would not eat it.

We found this place good. The staff were very helpful and understanding with one of our group who had special needs. The food was good, not brilliant but then the price was right. A reasonable meal at a reasonable price.

A small group of us called in for lunch. Service was quick and friendly. We all ordered fish and chips of various sizes. Very disappointing experience. The batter on my haddock was very greasy, the fish tasteless and had I not of been in Scarborough I would have bet it had been frozen at some time. Chips were undercooked and soggy. Nobody in our group enjoyed their meal.

Decidimos comer en la cafetería y tienen el pescado y oferta de chips que incluía pan y mantequilla y una taza de té. Él taza de té tienen manchas alrededor del borde y claramente no ha limpiado correctamente y el pan y la mantequilla estaba en segundos, así que había sido preparada para comprobar sentado mucho tiempo ya que los bordes estaban rancios. Sin embargo esperanzador para el estándar del pescado y patatas fritas. Cuando vinieron las patatas fritas eran muy blancas y en mi opción no había sido hecho lo suficientemente largo y el pescado tenía su piel y luego a la izquierda en frito y, para ser justos fue mucho la piel como era carne en el pescado. Probablemente el peor pescado y patatas fritas que he tenido.

Viaje en Scarborough en un día ajetreado. Paramos en el primer sitio que vimos para pescado y patatas fritas y nos defraudó. Las patatas fritas eran poco hecha, pasada y sobras congeladas en un gran bulto pálido zapallo. Pasta de pescado estaba cruda en algunas partes, el pescado era la izquierda con la piel y no tiene el mejor degustación. Bastante decepcionante para un chips junto al mar.

Como parte de un viaje de moto a la costa tuvimos que parar para pescado y patatas fritas (obligatorio) y este lugar no me decepcionó. Buena comida a un precio estupendo. Sin duda comer allí

Nos fuimos a la comida para llevar en un día lluvioso para tomar unas patatas fritas para caminar en la parte delantera. El servicio fue rápido, el personal era encantador y las patatas fritas eran buenas. Realmente no puedo pedir mucho más!

Stopped for lunch here with family which includes OAP's and a teenager and we were all impressed with the food. Great batter on beautifully cooked fish and excellent chips. It's clean and friendly and good value. When next in Scarborough I'll go again.

we were having a two course dinner in the evening so decided to share a portion of fish and chips - so glad we did - would never have managed one on my own - massive portion and chips were the best ever !!! and so cheap unbelievable - will return if ever I go back to scarborough

Me and my family had a bit of a get together in Scarborough. Decided to get fish and chips for lunch, but which chippy. There were quite a lot of people outside so we decided to try them from Bamfords. Big Mistake. I ordered Fish, Chips and Peas. Great.. I couldn't put any salt or vinegar on my chips because he made a layer of peas over the top of them, with the fish placed on top. Actually the fish resembled a dried out slipper, with skin on, couldnt eat it, and what I did try was disgusting. My sisters fish was the opposite. It was light coloured, undercooked and just full of soppy runny batter that resemble snot. The only saving grace was that there were a number of dustbins on both sides of the road. Not one member of my family could eat there's. A pair of seagulls flew down and helped themselves to a bit of fish. It was like a game of tug of war. They couldn't pull it apart. Poor little buggers.

Worst fish and chips ever. No lie. Dont believe me, try em. They smelt good walking past, but after purchasing them the group i was with all agreed with me that they were just revolting. 4 out of 6 fish were as dry as cardboard. Cooked to death, one of the fish was undercooked.. sloppy batter and very pale looking. Only one fish was ok. I dont like wasting food, but luckily for us there was a large bin on the opposite side of the street.

Wanted a typical lunch on Scarborough front. Fish and chips is really popular and queues are long on a sunny day. If you want to avoid this go to Bamfords on the fron where a takeaway operates but walk round the side and go in their cafe. Lovely and clean, well looked after and sat comfortably with a drink as well. No balancing on your knee a tricky box with seagulls swooping around. Also nearly forgot, the fish and chips were top notch.

Me and the family were visiting Scarborough for the day.As it was my first time in Scarborough I didn't know what to expect but was incredibly surprised at the location of the restaurant and the scenery it faces. We went for a standard size portion and was impressed at the quality and generosity of the meal. This is highly reccomended for the friendly and helpful staff and great food fresh from the counter. A true Yorkshire classic!

i always visit this chip shop in scarborough and every time its perfect. the fish is fresh, batter crispy, hot and very tasty, every thing that you could ask for, the staff are brilliant and are only too happy to help. this is the only chip shop for me

Quitter légèrement le front de mer pour rentrer dans ce petit restaurant tenu très proprement. La patronne est très sympathique. Le menu est essentiellement composé de fish'n chips simples, de qualité mais, de surcroît, pas très chers. A recommander.
