Review White Elm Garden Centre/Tea Room, White Elm Road, Bicknacre, Chelmsford CM3 4LR. First week in July and the summer weather across this part of south Essex had been terrible – cold, blustery, endless rain and little in the way of pleasure being outside. Which is how we came to share an hour or so in the White Elm Garden and Tea Room Centre that morning. We had earlier had in mind a walk across the hills behind Cold Norton that would enable us to take in the views across North Fambridge and the River Crouch to the south – for the pleasure of revisiting country that we once knew well. It was much the same when we drove across country to Bicknacre through Purleigh and passed by the Village Hall where, many years ago, we had enjoyed our wedding reception. Amazing … just like that. The White Elm Tea Room at Bicknacre that morning, however, was new country for us. It was warm, friendly and comfortable. It was also popular, with the larger of the two-dining rooms seemingly bursting at the seams – full tables, everyone talking and, as we found, virtually impossible to speak/hear one-to-the-other even leaning across the table. We quickly upped tables and heading into the small dining room next door – empty of people – and took a table at the window looking out to the commercial gardens that dominated the surrounding yards. They were chock full of flowering shrubs, many of which were potted plants with sales tags attached. It was a gorgeous setting for morning coffee/snack. Moreover, we were able to speak comfortably one-with-the-other from the start. Our dining room quickly began to fill – as more punters followed us in. The novelty of the clientele quickly became apparent as a cross-section of all kinds of those 65 and older – some of them leaning heavily on sticks and on each another. Other people, clearly grandmas all, were pushing tiny tots in buggies and/or trailing pre-schoolers by hand. Women easily outnumbered the menfolk. Table taken we headed for the counter in the main dining room next door to order/pay for our drinks and snacks. These followed us back to our table (by number) 10-12 minutes later. We bought four coffees and a couple of jam doughnuts – cut into quarters at the table - to share. We paid £18.00. Three large cappuccini were each the same price as one small flat white (at £3.25). Small cappuccini were £2.50 each. Why? The doughnuts were £2.50 each. Coffees were hot, tasty and well-presented with a dust of chocolate across the top, and the doughnuts were fresh, succulent and ate well. It was a delightful last morning break in a highly popular venue. Issues? None come immediately to mind … well, except for the rope across the footpath at the entrance to the café telling you – the punter – to wait at the rope for someone from inside to come and fetch you. Novel. You couldn’t actually see inside from where the rope held you back so there was no way of attracting attention. It was raining/damp hanging around outside. For all that, we were just removing the rope to walk through when a friendly woman came out of the door to deal with us and the half-dozen people waiting patiently behind us. She told us to find a table to suit. We did. Then it was raining – sufficient to get wet unless you had brought your brolly with you. Follow the pathway alongside the café as you leave, however, and then duck into the shop/services section of the garden centre and you can explore the extra-ordinary selection of all kinds of garden ware/tool/equipment/plants, etc. and/or cut through to one side heading out via a long-covered plant house to the car park outside. This way you’re less likely to get wet. Everywhere you walked between car park and café there were racks/tables/lines/collections of plants for sale. The majority were in bloom and the surrounding country was a wealth of colours … it was gorgeous. Plants/pots looked to be in fair condition with hardly a blemish/damaged/shed leaves/petals to be seen. Plant management/presentation was good. But we were not buying - simply enjoying the delight of display. It had been much the same with our morning break - an enjoyable interlude in a comfortable venue. Peter Steele 09 July 2024

I was here to visit the petting farm and soft play area last sunday with children aged 5 and 3.... Got to the place about 9am and by 9.30am we had looked round the 'farm'... a few miserable animals standing up to their knees in standing water.... went to the soft play area and was told there was a private party and we couldn't go in... left with 2 disappointed children after spending over £25 for the experience....

Booked my daughter’s second birthday here at the soft play and petting farm because my we had been before and she had loved it. Our family and friends were all really impressed with the venue and the breakfast for the kids with exclusive soft play for our group from 9-10. We then had a marquee which was really cute and had lots of photo opportunities with the animals followed by a farm tour. Staff were really relaxed and understanding and had the go with the flow attitude you need with toddlers. Super helpful. I really couldn’t fault it and won’t be able to top it for her third birthday 😄

I’d heard good things, but we weren’t impressed. Staff not very friendly or welcoming. Seem to have a chip on their shoulder about something? Don’t seem to want to work with the public. A lot of rules on tearoom windows. Half empty, but you can’t enter until they come out and let you in. Strange. Even an elderly couple came out as I was waiting and said we would hold the door for you, but it seems you can’t go in until they say you can. Food was very average and fairly expensive. Not even table service, Just didn’t feel friendly. Farm overpriced for what it is really, but animals seem happy enough. Garden centre very overpriced. Didn’t buy anything, even sale items were expensive. Wouldn’t rush back.

We decided to have lunch at The White Elm Tearoom as we had been visiting the petting farm. Its a very nice looking T place to eat and drink inside or out. The food was nice (nothing special) but on the cold side which i hate. But that said i would come back to eat here again. Staff were nice too. The garden centre was lovely and we had a look in all the shops on site including a reptile shop, toy shop and amazing sweet shop among others. Highly recommended.

Dropped in for lunch as we were in the area, cheery staff seated outside but we moved inside due to wasps. Both had lamb burgers, very tasty with a generous salad. Only minor grumble is the buns for the burger are far too big (picky I know). Fair price and left satisfied.

Had a really lovely day at this garden centre. Large choice of trees and plants and bits for your garden, some great shops outside where my mum, sister and I got great bargains on faux flowers then we all enjoyed lunch in the tea room. Lots of seating both in and outside. The staff were excellent and we got served very quickly. My sister and I really enjoyed the petting farm. We couldn’t believe how big it was and we got to feed and pet a large variety of animals. We will definitely be returning.

My friend and I often go to the tea room at White Elms but we are fed up with how they start to stack the chairs on the tables and sweep up around you - from 2.30 onwards! I know they have to clear up before they close, but this is very unpleasant and not conducive to a relaxing chat! It’s a shame because the food is very good but we will think twice before going there again.

I was told that I could swap out my sons and my food when got there to pay was told differently I said was not fair and not my problem then to be told to leave and it all kicks off in front of other people maybe I didn’t handle it well as I could of but I’m not having the so called owner tell me to leave then come outside with me head to head and push me makes me look bad when all I wanted was what they offered me I said I would pay for the swaps but not good enough really up set me I match and mirror the way I’m spoken to and swear I saw rats running around but maybe because farms there too. Maybe shouldn’t of shouted as I’m a very naturally loud person so probably make it worse sorry if you were there but all I wanted was to swap beans for scrambled egg for my 5yr old son and couple of bits for me that I was told was ok at the door

This is one of the best places to take toddlers for a morning or afternoon out. It offers an extremely clean soft play with a variety of equipment and toys which includes: dressing up; ride on cars; climbing equipment with slides and trampolines. Perfect for parents who want to let children explore whilst being safe in the knowledge they can be seen wherever they are. Shout out to Emily who is always friendly and kind, making sure the soft play is clean and in great condition for the kids to explore.

Service was efficient and friendly, food was okay if a little pricey for what it was. We were offered a table in the ‘quiet’ room which should be renamed the ‘loud’ room and we couldn’t hear ourselves think above the Towie brigade and their kids and we’re glad to escape!

After paying for an order I was told they did not have the meal I ordered so I chose a different option however the option was cheaper amd money was not returned. My five year olds sausage was dry as if it had been in the warmer too long so he couldn’t cut it let alone eat it. We were told to sit at a certain table which was by the door and it was crafty as people kept leaving the door open. It’s an ok place to pop in for a cuppa or cake as the cake is an unhealthy one off treat but other than that it’s average.

We arrived to take our 3 year old grandson into the petting area. It was ‘sold out’! The unfriendly assistant said she’d already had complaints from the public that it was ‘too busy’! When we looked through the fence there were hardly any people looking at the animals so I can only assume it was busy in the indoor play area where we had no interest in going. Ridiculous! Luckily we discovered the wonderful Maldon Promenade petting zoo straight after which cheered our little grandson up beautifully! They had no restrictions and it was a brilliant learning experience with their welcoming very interactive staff.

Took my 2 year old here on a sunny Thursday in term time and we had a great time. There were lots of animals to feed, all looked well cared for and with nice living spaces. There was also outdoor play equipment dotted about the grounds in case the kids want a break from feeding the animals. The place was not too busy and it was easy to social distance. The cafe was quite busy but staff explained to us how to stick to their Covid guidelines in a clear way and easy to follow way, it has obviously been well thought out. The staff were all very friendly and the food came quickly. The kids’ hot chocolate was wonderful on a chilly day. Much more to see than I expected for the price and I’ll definitely be going back.

It was our first time visiting here since the coronavirus and now I wished I had not wasted the journey. Talk about an over reaction to social distancing at the cafe today, not being anywhere near this female member of staff and she was shouting at us to move away from her backing us away from the door and forcing us to step over a rope at the side of the cafe to social distance before letting us in ( especially my 70 year old mum) If we had hurt ourselves they would have had a massive claim against them, hardly health and safety. Might I add we hadn't even entered the cafe and we were masked. We were told we had 20 mins to have a drink and leave, my mother asked if we would be chucked out even if we hadn't finished on time and she was insistent they closed at 4 and you were out even if you hadn't finished! When we chose to leave because of such an awful experience she gave us a dreadful look and never said a thing. Hardly a welcoming and I don't ever want to return. They were lucky I had even returned considering the tea was awful on my last visit but I was willing to give them another chance, this I won't be doing again!

I came here with my two young children (3 and 4) for lunch, right from the start our waitress was so warm and welcoming explaining the new procedures that they had in place. She found us a lovely table with an umbrella outside allowing us to sit on a larger table despite there only being 3 of us - but was welcomed as two little ones take up a lot of space. The lady kindly explained the new ordering process which meant only one person inside at one time. This is very difficult with 2 little ones, but she quickly said take your time and let me know and I will watch your children for you. Despite being on her own greeting she stayed and spoke with my children to ensure they stayed seated. The food was good - no complaints, but it was this lovely lady that made it for us.

Family of four (one 4yrs other 8yrs) for around £15, lots of animals inc wallabys, alpacas and usual farm animals. The farm feels new, clean, fresh and animals look healthy and well looked after. Cheap animal feed with a bucket which is great as the bag feed always rips! Couple of play areas perfect for younger children. Man on reception very friendly and welcoming and explained all the covid rules. Thought processes in place were excellent, lots of sanitiser about too. Lunched here recently at around 1pm. Managed to get a table in the "adults only" area but the noise from the main coffee shop/eating area still came through the open archway between the two. Very busy with a lots of parents and very young children and decibel level incredibly high. Food was ok but panini was thin and very little filling for the £7. Pot of tea served with a very large cup which took the entire contents of the pot. Cakes looked inviting but none of them priced - one should not have to ask the price before deciding on whether to purchase; everything else is priced on the menu so why not cakes individually? If you visit after about 2.30pm, it seems to go quieter but would not return during main lunch period without ear defenders.

We hosted our annual NCT party here, this year for our five year olds, and it was fantastic. We had exclusive hire 9-10 of the play barn which is plenty big enough for 5 year olds, then a tour of the farm and feeding from 10-11. The guy who looks after the animals was passionate and knowledgeable about his animals and they’re all clearly very well cared for. The party comes with a simple breakfast of pastries, cereals, and yogurts and a wide range of other foods are on sale from the cafe in the play barn.

We came with 2 sets of friends for breakfast. The staff were friendly and the service was good. The disappointment was the food. The quality of produce is below par and the quality of cooking was lacking. A few of our party had poached eggs which arrived with white and yolk apart with the yolk hard. Could easily rectify problems as a lovely setting and location.

Very well run petting farm and tea room. We ran out of time to look at the garden centre as we had so much fun on the farm.

I and my fiancée wanted to have some breakfast here. We got in the line 20 minutes before breakfast ended, when we finally got to the till 20 minutes later because the line was that long, the lady not so kindly informed us that breakfast was now over. Very disappointed, bad staff, don’t go here if you want to have a good time.

We came for lunch and to visit all the other attractions. We ordered lunch and saw a sign that said there was a forty minute wait for food, a pain but the restaurant and staff were very busy. We waited well over an hour for our food, with no apology, the food was ok and average price. We took our young grandson to the petting farm, I thought the admission price was quite expensive. We visited the soft play area which our grandson liked. We only visited the old fashioned sweet shop, which I thought was very good, lots of jars of sweets, reasonable prices. The lady behind the counter was very polite and friendly

Had a lovely morning at the petting farm with the family.. my 4 year old loved it my older ones 9 and 11 also had fun but got bored much quicker then my youngest. we didn't realise how big the garden centre was it's a lovely place to visit, there are lots of little grey huts that sell different things.. all the staff are friendly and helpful.. the only negative thing I have is that a can of Pepsi was £1.35 which I thought was a lot for only a can..

Visited with my parents for lunch and a wander round the shops. The cafe was very busy as you would expect during school holidays and at lunch time. We ended up on a table outside and that was our first mistake. The decking is rotting and it’s like being in an earthquake! Every time someone moves the whole area rocks. We ordered food and waited....we waited almost forty minutes for two scones and a sandwich. The sweet chilli chicken sandwich was a disgrace...cheap supermarket packet bread...rubbery bland chicken with a teaspoon of sauce, the salad was a quarter of a tomato with one thin slice of cucumber and some grated carrot..it cost almost six pounds. My parents said the scones were dry and barely edible. I feel this cafe has become a victim of its initial success but if standards continue to drop this won’t be a problem for much longer as people will not return!

I am a regular at this place, me and my family come weekly. There has been substantial change over the years. However the food quality is great, portions are sizeable and the service is fantastic. This has become a core part of my weekly family routine. This is a place that bought us together. Definitely come!!!

this is the 3rd time we've come to the tearoom since June and have to save its a nice place. The foods lovely, the staff and hard working but helpful, has a nice decking area. We did have a wait on food and we were informed. I watched through the door and the 2 kitchen staff were flat out and didn't stop, maybe an extra staff member could help over the busy periods? The menu has also changed but I think it has a better choice now

We came here with our family on 22/07/2019. The garden centre is lovely. There is lots to do for the family. We went around the petting farm which was good and then had lunch in the tearoom. The food was great, very fresh and filling. The staff were very helpful and all seemed to work together very well considering it was busy. I would recommended this place to family and friends in the future

Normally go here about once per month for lunch. Arrived just before 12.00 at got seated all ok. I ordered a Ham Salad my Girlfriend wanted Tuna Mayo Sandwich made with Gluten Free Bread which was not problem She had a Tin of Rio and slice of Choco mint cake also Gluten Free. I had a pot of tea for one the bill was about £19 seemed ok to me. The food came very quickly and my Ham salad was extremely filling to the point i had to leave a bit of salad as i was pretty stuffed at the end of the meal. My only complaint if only very minor was they used to have big tea pots that you could fill up your cup 3 or 4 times and some. But they have have got small teapots that only hold 2 cups and do not supply extra hot water to tip into the pot as a top up. Im sure if i had asked i would have been given extra hot water to do this. But my only hope is bring back the large Tea Pots. Shame about the other Poor reviews as i have never been disapointed at the Garden Center Cafe and feel you should overlook these poor reviews and at least try it out.

Have been here several times in past few years with grandchildren and they always enjoyed it. However we went again today and were very disappointed, entrance is quite expensive, numbers of animals seemed to have dropped off and there seems to be fewer that you can actually feed.

I visited White Elm Garden Centre and Tea Room on a Sunday. The centre itself is lovely, however I decided to order some lunch from the tea room. I am aware that they would be busy, it being Sunday lunch time and there was a sign stating it would be a 30 minute wait for food. I ordered a sandwich and a can of drink, which are in a fridge behind the till. I expected to be handed the drink and then have the food bought out to me, but no. I was told they would bring me my drink. So I sat and I waited, and I waited some more. After 40 minutes still no drink, I went in to complain and even then they tried to say they would bring it to me. I pointed to the fridge and said "the drinks are there, why don't you just give me the drink now whilst I'm stood here" With much resentment I was handed the drink. I asked why I was still waiting after 40 minutes for a drink and a sandwich, to which I was ignored. I sat down and another 15 minutes later I finally got my lunch. An hour for a sandwich and a can of drink is absolutely disgusting. Clearly something is not working in your kitchen or there is a severe breakdown of communication between front of house and kitchen staff. Your systems need to be rapidly improved before you lose anymore custom.

As well as an excellent nursery for all sorts of plants, shrubs, trees etc, this place also has a nice restaurant where you can rest a while & have a good cup of coffee & a snack, or something more substantial if you wish & all for a very reasonable price.

I brought my niece here the other day whilst in the area. They had a notice that they were not serving hot food other than potatoes or chips. Brought my husband back over the bank holiday (a 45 minute drive) to try the tea room in the hope that there would be hot food this time (as it looked good on the menu) only to be told they stopped serving food 15 mins ago (at 2.40pm??). I am gluten and dairy free (intolerant), so asked what cakes or anything else they could offer - which was nothing! I did ask if they could still serve any other food like a sandwich and they said they couldn't, even though food was still coming out from the kitchen for about another 20mins after we sat down. Our pot of tea was only filled 1/3 with water and 1 tea bag - so 'just' enough to fill the 2 cups that came with it! I did check their website/social media and nothing said about their bank holiday Monday opening hours or food serving times in the tea room. We wont be making the journey over again. I spent £50 in the garden centre when I previously came with my niece, so with the service they are offering, I'm sure they'll be losing money in the long run. One member of staff that has got good customer service was Claire, the waitress table serving in the tea room.

Gandkids live in a city where there are no farm animals, so we took them to the petting farm where they had a great time feeding the goats, pigs ,alpacas etc, we bought wellies before our visit but needn't have as they have welly hire at £1.50p per pair. We adults liked all the small pop up business units, myself especially the maritime art studio ,with great Thames barge paintings. Garden center has a large selection of gifts and we bought several hard to choose birthday presents. Allow visiting time to include browsing around the units & shop

Visited with my daughter, son in law and grandson recently. Had our usual wander around the lovely little shops and went for a coffee. The menu looked so good we decided to have lunch. We adults had a selection of baguettes and wraps, my grandson had a children’s lunch box which had a good selection to choose from and a free activity book...well worth £4.99! I opted for smoked salmon & cream cheese wrap which was generously filled and very tasty. Lovely little local place worth supporting.

Went to visit the farm and tea room, on arriving we went to the tea room and had lunch for 4, whilst in there black clouds emerged and it poured down with rain. Looking at the farm it appeared very muddy and large puddles. We politely requested that due to this would they give us a voucher to return on another day. Lady on the counter was reluctant and called her boss over. When he came over his first sentence was “who’s got the problem”. We politely explained the situation. His response was quite argumentative and arragant, saying well if you went on holiday to Spain and the weather was bad you wouldnt get a refund!! He was so rude in his response and clearly would not offer any kind of refund or voucher so it worked out a very expensive lunch out. However had he given us a return voucher we would have came back another time, spent more money in the cafe and the shops and probably recommended it to others. But solely down to the arragant unhelpful nature of the staff we will not return and will not recommend to others. If this person is the manager then he needs to do some customer service training!

Friendly staff, too small for the size of hospital & the menu needs a look at. I felt visiting family at the hospital for a week, meant the menu was too much of the same type of food. Aside from this, meals were available from Marks&Spencer but there was no where to heat them up.

I've wanted to go to this pub for ages. The reason being it was Keith flints pub. I was absolutely made up that I've photos of me outside which I'll frame. I do live far away so this has made my year being a big fan. I went inside and it was not what I expected. To be honest it has some nice charm to it. A real nice country pub. Prices are reasonable and the bar staff very friendly. I would recommend and would love to go back again.
