The Six Bells in Chelmsford

Had my husband's Wake there. We was looked after so well, especially Ray who was very nice actually all the staff were lovely. Went in 2 days later for evening meal with my son and his girlfriend, again Ray was lovely and all staff who was looking after us. Definitely recommend this pub and we will be going back

Popped in here to collect three Fish & Chip takeaways we had ordered over the phone. The staff were excellent as usual and the food was very tasty (Fish, chips, peas, tartar sauce, and a slice of lemon in a box)

A review which accounts for many years of coming here, and having exceptional service and food every single time. Not one member of staff isn’t friendly, and the food is amazing every time. Pictured is the beef roast, scampi, and the chocolate fudge cake.

Excellent food, good selection of bear, nice atmosphere.

A quirky partially exposed timber framed pub with very many tables, perhaps a few too many as it did feel a tad cramped inside. Two trad roast dinners and a fish cakes was the order. It came to the table quickly and was OK. The roasts were a tad school dinner style but quite tasty. The fish cakes were a bit odd but the chips were quite good. The service was friendly and attentive but the interior was a bit of a let down with uneven floor levels and a bit dingey.

Had lunch here midweek during half term. Lovely warm welcoming pub, friendly staff, prompt service. I ordered the bacon, Brie and cranberry panini which was very tasty. Friend ordered tuna jacket potato which looked amazing! Big potato lots of filling. Drinks were ordered and brought to table promptly. Will visit again highly recommended

Turn up with about twenty of us, just for drinks and sandwiches. They where very helpful, open up thier marque, put the heating on in there. Staff where great smiling and helpful.

My partner and I always stop off here after our break away in Southwold. We’ve had a few very nice meals. However, today, was totally shocked with the rudeness of who, I can only assume is the landlord. Rude! Just rude! Couldn’t even make eye contact with us. Absolutely fine and chatty and laughing with the regulars. But even coming to collect our glasses couldn’t or wouldn’t even look at us or raise a smile. It’s such a shame. The staff are so lovely, kind and smiley but his bad manners have totally put us off! I know we were only there for a quick drink on the way home but we do this regularly with food also at times. I know regulars are important but it’s also the clients like us that spend money, that make the places like this tick over surely? Well we won’t be going back now. It’s a shame but why would you spend money in a place where you don’t feel welcome.

Our first visit here on the advice of my neighbour and totally loved it! The whole experience was really good - the food was superb especially the lamb shoulder and mash, tasted just like home cooking, absolutely great. Good old fashioned bread and butter pudding with custard left me full and happy. Three 2 course dinners and drinks for under £90 - money well spent.

Lovely Saturday night dinner with friends . Great food and atmosphere - halibut special was delightful. Millionaire shortbread dessert good too. Only slight issue was two main courses we wanted was sold out

Having visited the Six Bells on many occasions we took the opportunity to book a Christmas dinner there this evening. We had phoned our pre order through but there was only 3 of us. After arrival we were shown to our table that didn’t have any decorations on it. We sat for literally two minutes when my sons starter appeared, I advised one of the staff that it was a Christmas booking and he came back with 3 crackers! But no other starters. I ordered a tonic water which arrived with no lemon either. My son finished his starter and staff went to clear his plate when I asked where the other two starters were. The staff member said we hadn’t ordered them? He then reappeared and said the orders were hidden so they weren’t seen by the kitchen. The two soups finally appeared a short while after. Main courses were served, salmon filet with cous cous and a tomato sauce, and two turkey roasts. There wasn’t much cous cous with the salmon which was over powered by the amount of tomato sauce on the plate. The roasts were average to say the least. One pig in blanket, the stuffing seemed wet and under cooked and there was hardly any gravy on the plate. No staff appeared to ask if everything was ok during the meal and no staff appeared to offer the bill when we had finished. We ended up paying at the bar. Total bill £113 which included a 10% service charge. The owner wasn’t on shift tonight and this seemed to reflect on the service received on this occasion. A real shame as previously mentioned we have eaten here on many occasions and have always enjoyed the dining experience. Hopefully it was a one off, but quite an expensive one sadly.

Good food and drinks in an historic building, busy atmosphere and excellent service . Around £30 per head. Coffee not so good.

We visit here a few times a year, the food is excellent, large portions. All cooked well. All the staff are really friendly, and attentive at all times. Always feel welcome here. If I lived closer it would be my local. We come from Clacton.

Very atmospheric pub with good service. I thought the food rather plain, lots of boiled potatoes with over cooked broccoli and carrots and almost raw sprouts. The game pie was OK, but a bit stodgy. I think I have had better value for money elsewhere.

Excellent food and service reasonably priced

Important to stress this Restaurant DOES NOT PERMIT DOGS INSIDE. Although they are very happy to have them in the garden or marque. Lovely staff, enjoyable food, lovely atmosphere apart from when the rear door is opened on cold days.

I came here for lunch with my family and it was an excellent experience! The atmosphere was lively, food was yummy and service was great. Special mention to Mick on the bar who made our experience the best it could be! He is very welcoming, friendly, funny and hardworking, you can tell he loves his job. What a credit to the team he is!

I meet a friend here once a month. I can't fault anything, from arrival to leaving, it's a great restaurant.

Booked a meal for a 21 seat charity supper on a Saturday eve. ALL the food was served correct to the prior order and at the same time. No complaints whatsoever. Warm, friendly and attentive staff. Catered extremely well for our 4 Vegans. Nothing was too much trouble to make our night special. Would book here again for the same.

Went with friends celebrating a big anniversary the food was pre ordered and delivered in time with proceedings by pleasant friendly staff who looked after us discretely with good food.

Fantastic! What a great meal - the haddock and chips was the very best, light, crispy batter - the chips were perfect - crumble and custard perfection with extra custard… the staff were so warm and friendly, not your usual tapping on the screen, stuck to the system but genuinely connected and helpful. We had a four year old and they immediately gave her a colouring book and pencils to keep her happy. This is our new go to pub / thank you The Six Bells - it was a wonderful meal and fantastic personal service.

As a family we all love The Six Bells. There is always a warm welcome and a very trustworthy gluten-free menu. The owner goes above and beyond to ensure a positive experience. The prices are very reasonable for the quality of food. This pub really should to be advertised as a star find for anyone with any dietary restrictions. Finally, it still feels like a pub which is an absolute positive in my view! With a fire in the winter and a beer garden for a summer pint.

We had not been here for several years and chose it for its location - about midway between us and our daughter. We were expecting pub grub and that is what we got. Each of our mains was as good as you would get in any pub. Good food, decently presented. My dessert was a bit bland, I think was a buy-in. Known in our fsmilyas a "Brakes Bothers" dessert. The only reason it did not justify 'excellent'was the 'manager' who gave the impression she really did not want to be there. When we asked if we could order dessert she said she would get someone else along, she did but there was zero charm. She was the person who took the payment and again without a smile, nor did she bother to ask how we enjoyed the meal.

I always enjoy the six bells. It's a traditional style pub selling good quality traditional pub food. The pie is always amazing. Good selection of beers and friendly staff.

I had a lovely time the beef and lamb was not as expected however the quick service from my server Charlie .the desserts were exceptional and the way it was represented was astronomically good, will be coming back. Thank!

We visited as a walking group of 14 today (5th July) for lunch. We pre ordered our meals and drinks before setting off for Papermill lock and Stacey very kindly opened up at 9.45am for us. Within 5 minutes of returning from walk, all our drinks and food had arrived. Stacey and his team are all great and i have never been disappointed by the food or service here. Living in Boreham for 41 years, it makes me feel proud to have this as my local

My wife and I had a meal at The Six Bells yesterday evening (Friday) with a large group. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals and returned for lunch today. Great food, large portions and staff were all superb. A pleasant welcome on both occasions and service was excellent.

We went for lunch to celebrate a birthday my wife had the fish pie and vegetables, my sister had the sea food salad and I had the beer battered haddock with chips and peas. We all really enjoyed our meals and the service was very good , a nice change to find a pub that serves a decent meal at a reasonable price

The food was traditional pub grub a bit disappointed with the salt and pepper squid,cooked well but had no flavour of the salt and pepper.the rest of the food was ok nothing special or wow.nor a really inspiring menu

The Six Bells are a great crew, the food is excellent, I’m not a lover of there Six Bells Sundae only because I’m not fond of Crunchies, but was told if I bring some thing in I like they would add it,Stacey would help any way he could , I would recommend to try them you couldn’t go wrong, Great Food, Great Service.

Been visiting six bells for last 20 years but this im afraid was the first time we had to complain about the food. My mother in laws grilled haddock was overcooked and looked like it had been cooked 3 times as hard as rubber. My fish and chips was not to normal high standards being overcooked with very little fish within the batter. The chips were not up to standard either. My sons venison burger was lovely he said so at least he was happy. Maybe a different chef ? Not sure but has certainly seen to be cutting corners on quality but with the normal higher prices which was very disapointing. The lady did remove the grilled fish from the bill. Shame Stacey was not on site.

This was one of our favourite pubs to eat in the Chelmsford area. On Saturday we called in with friends for a drink, although pub was half empty we asked to sit in the front reception area. We promptly left and when somewhere more hospitality. The Six Bells is clearly no longer a pub and only interested in customers who are eating. Just another restaurant!

Came for a family gathering .lovely little setting with low beams. Staff were very friendly. Food was great with couple of choices with chef specials as well. Had the partridge and pheasant hotpot with was very meaty and tasty. Would definitely come back

Went for a large group Xmas lunch having previously enjoyed the good food here. Part cooked cold food for some, burnt overcooked for others and just right for half the group. Won't book for a group again but would go back as a couple in the evening. Disappointing.

Superb food couldn't fault all delicious smoked haddock, fresh veg, cheesy mash, salmon daughinouse potato plus vanilla brulee and bakewell tart. Excellent all round good service but best to book gets busy and can understand why!

Excellent service and really nice food. I ate there with 4 friends for 60th Birthdays and took a takeaway home for my Husband. He said it was the best liver and bacon he's ever had.

Went Sunday 15th October 2023 with my wife and my brother and his wife for Sunday dinner three of us ordered the roast beef meal when it arrived the beef was covered in a watery gravy a minute Yorkshire pudding the beef was very tough and tasteless the only positive thing i could say is that the roast potatoes and parsnips were cooked beautifully very disappointing been there before and been good mentioned it to our server who said they had already had been complaints no offer of any discount was made will go elsewhere in future
