Wheelers Oyster Bar in Canterbury

Staff were extremely good to start. Very nice and clearly fans with the locals. The food wasn't bad just a lot of elements that were lacking . Ordered the salmon tartare. The ciabatta was only lightly toasted then sat on a grainy beetroot puree , with the raw salmon on top all very soggy.. All tasted fine but the textures were all off . Should be crispy bread , crunchy shallots and capers in the salmon and a smooth beetroot puree. Salmon wasn't diced well. The seafood pasta after lacked sauce. Must of had 3 prawns cut up and 6 mussels all tasted fine . My wife ordered the salmon and swordfish carbonara. Was slightly split and lacked seasoning. We didn't get offered a dessert as the staff started cleaning down . Lovely decorated restaurant and the fish counter in the window is a lovely touch. Just a shame a few elements were off. We don't live in bath but if we did we would probably try again but wouldn't rush back.

The food was okay, but the service was really poor. My father is very particular about his food (anything additional on the plate which he does not ask for will freak him out), so we made it extremely clear what he wanted and to leave everything else off the plate. Unfortunately, even though they said they would provide what he wanted, they did not and there were many extra items and seasonings on the food which they explicitly specified to us they would not put on the plate. The man who delivered the food was also very rude. When my father mentioned that the food was not what he ordered he told him that the food that came out is what is served - they could have just politely told us this when we were ordering and we would have gone elsewhere… They also brought out the mains before the starters even though they said they would do the opposite and forgot one of the drinks which never came out. Overall, the food was okay - nothing memorable but service was really poor and the staff did not seem to care at all.

To be honest, this is my second time visiting this restaurant. When I first came here, the service and food were very good. That time I ate with my son, but the second time I went there to eat, the attitude of the service staff was very problematic. First, he had a weird reaction when I entered the restaurant. There was only one other customer and me in the restaurant, and there were no customers at other seats. Since this was my second time dining, I asked him directly if I could sit in the same seat as last time. He said he couldn't use the table but didn't give me any reason. His attitude was already very unfriendly. Later I ordered two entrees. Judging by the look on his face, two entrees are enough for four people? Do I have to order an entree per person? In addition, after eating, the wife took her son to the bathroom to change his diaper. I followed her and changed my son's diaper. We entered the toilet together. The service staff saw us walking into the toilet together. He saw me taking my son in to change diapers, and knocked on the door while I was changing diapers, saying that only two people could go in here. Why? what reason? Because I'm Asian? Am I more likely to be bullied? Do you discriminate against us? As for the food, I did think it was good the first time I ate it, so I brought the whole family to this restaurant again this time. Unexpectedly, this dining experience was so bad. Instead of improving, the food deteriorated. I ordered a risotto and a pasta dish. The risotto was normal, but the pasta had no flavor at all. Not even a basic salty taste. Even if I make it at home, it still tastes better than him. I don't think I will eat at this restaurant again. If you have children, I recommend avoiding this restaurant. Finally I asked the waiter what his name was and he answered me. I won't reveal his name here. I know you will read this message. If you see it yourself, check your attitude

This place is one-of-a-kind and we couldn't be happier with our meal there. The place is TINY so do book early to avoid disappointment. We started with -- you guessed it -- Oysters. We chose three of the approx half dozen varieties they have on offer. They were fresh and delicious. We also had the Korean shrimp --which was sticky and superb (though I could have done without the coriander leaf). For main courses we had skate, cod, haddock and monkfish. ALL OUTSTANDING. The puddings did not disappoint either... rhubarb soufflé, chocolate fondant, and an original whipped cheesecake situation that was truly original and out of this world. The service is fantastic, and there's an off-license (literally called the OFFY) directly opposite where they will recommend a bottle or more to pair with your meal. All told a delightful success and we hope to return!

We had a fabulous experience here. Matt provided us with excellent service and really helped with our wine selection. The food was delicious too.

Another visit to this gem of a restaurant. We fortunately had the tasting menu; 8 courses of sublime dishes with friendly and efficient hospitality. Can’t recommend highly enough.

We are now having to invent extra reasons to celebrate with lunch at Wheelers. We used to called it The Birthday Club, but three times a year is just not enough. Wheelers will never be awarded a Michelin star I would guess as so many other factors support the winning of a star more than the excellent service and sublime seafood present here. Personally I find the whole place, still in a time warp, bar the kitchen a masterpiece of stainless steel cleanliness, is it's charm, so perfectly retaining the memory of seaside hostelries of a bygone age. We invented our extra visit to try out a new menu and were transported as ever into the upper echelons of seafood perfection on a plate. Even the 'amuse bouche' slivers of warm homemade bread and a homemade pesto to die for presented on a slate to share is a dish in itself. After a half dozen Rock Oysters zinging with freshness, I moved on to a new, and as far as I am aware, unique dish. Roasted Scallops, Rabbit Fish Finger, White Onion, Rosemary and Pecorino Puree, Dry aged Bacon, Courgette and Scallop Roe Veloute. Quite a mouthful for a starter but just seafood heaven worth three Michelin stars in my book. The sheer intricacy of the dish, especially the rabbit fish finger showed just how much trouble they go to here inventing something that rises head and shoulders above the rest, a combination made in heaven. Who would ever contemplate twinning rabbit with scallops, a last meal for the condemned man indeed and I for one will weep if it is ever removed from the menu. We managed to prise chef from the kitchen near the end of service and it was not surprising after his explanation of how something so simple was in fact a masterpiece of construction, planning and execution. Needless to say the rest of the meal was superb as always ending with a sublime rhubarb soufflé. Should you ever find yourselves aiming for the South East coast, in Michelin language then it's 'definitely worth a detour' to Wheelers, though book well in advance. Our next birthday is in July, so we are going to have to invent another good reason to return before then.

First time here. Love the pasta here. So tasty, every bite was full of flavours. Most importantly, pasta was al dante (Yay!!), but my partner prefers it slightly softer. We had the Linguine Al Gamberi & Tagliatelle Scallop, lovely! Staff were friendly and checked on us regularly.

We loved this place . We could only eat at the bar because it was busy, but what a welcome. Nothing was too much trouble. You bring your own wine and sit and eat your way through the counter food. We order oysters cooked and local . What a treat. Next time we will definitely book the restaurant.

First class food with an awesome choice of dishes. Believe me you will not be disappointed .

This oyster bar sells fantastic fayre and we'd highly recommend it. We just stopped for a coffee, tea and a crab and prawn tart, which was absolutely delicious. We will be back for a meal soon.

THIS RESTAURANT HAS NOT INVESTIGATED THIS AND HAS BEEN CAUSING FOOD POISONING TO CUSTOMERS FOR THE PAST THREE MONTHS. == UPDATE 19/02/24 == I am very disappointed that you have not so much as acknowledged my email suggesting that you are selling food that is causing food poisoning. Whilst I enjoyed the food which didn't cause me food poisoning and had every intention of returning, your lack of response to both this email and my neutrally-worded review on Google, as well as multiple other Google reviews complaining of exactly the same thing as recently as 6 days ago, has spurred me to lodge a complaint with Wiltshire Council's Public Protection team who will be investigating your restaurant for selling food which contravenes food safety standards. I also see Portofino claiming that a customer was complaining about spending so much and "should not go to expensive restaurants" - who wants to go to any restaurant and get food poisoning? Rude conduct from the restaurant. == UPDATE 09/01/24 == The following day after eating here, both my partner and I became ill with bad stomachs and I was bedridden for a day with chills, vomiting and hallucinations, with my partner having a temperature and headaches the following day, luckily she escaped the hallucinations! I researched and found that when oysters are stored improperly or not treated before serving can pass onto you a vibriosis infection, which gave us our exact symptoms. I contacted the restaurant with a friendly email on the 22nd December and was not replied to - I am now posting this review publicly. DO NOT ORDER THE OYSTERS.

I was in portofino with my friends we had some salmone tartare and the grilled platter to share and we enjoyed it. Recommend

AVOID. Wish I had read the reviews before eating here as this is clearly not an isolated case. Myself and my partner have been so ill since ate here. Vomiting, diarrhoea, aches, chills. We ordered the seafood platter & had concerns about how it looked but stupidly dismissed them as we were hungry. Chefs couldn’t look more disinterested, skulking around an empty restaurant. Cannot believe this place is just continuing to get away with quite literally poisoning people they should go to jail! To top it all off spent £140 just to get poisoned! Disgusted.

Loved it! We’ve heard many, many positive reviews about Wheelers and it didn’t disappoint. We enjoyed their amazing dinner tasting menu. The chef even came out after the meal to ask for our feedback. The highlights were the sea bream ceviche, lobster spring roll and rhubarb sorbet. We will absolutely be back again!

*update* Thank you to Portofino for returning my email this afternoon. It's good to know that you are following all of the food safety measures to try to prevent your customers becoming ill. Myself and my family will be avoiding oysters in the future. ___________________________________ We were visiting our daughter at uni and took her for a treat meal to Portofino on Saturday afternoon. The service was great and food was actually delicious. But on Sunday evening I was violently sick and my husband and daughter started with the same on Monday morning. I hadn't read reviews prior to eating here and wish I had. I have never felt so ill. I tried emailing the restaurant but have had no reply. I've also contacted environmental health to report our suspected food poisoning as it would appear ours is not an isolated incident. I wouldn't want anyone else to go through this.

We bought two dressed crabs on Saturday afternoon, 3rd February 2024, and put them in the fridge at home about 15 minutes later. We ate them the next day. They tasted odd and old and had been frozen, certainly not fresh. We both had uncomfortable nights with upset stomachs, and stayed in bed all next day (which is where I am now). Clearly, not a place that’s as good as they think they. They should call in the Public Health to check out their hygiene

We came here for somewhere quick to eat and found this on Google search. We were served by a lovely young lady. We thoroughly enjoyed our dishes. The portions were very generous, leaving us full and satisfied. The main dishes were quite expensive but worth it.

Lovely place and our mains were nice but DO NOT get the oysters if you want really bad food poisoning!!!! It’s such a shame because we enjoyed our time here until 3 out of 4 of us woke up with violently bad food poisoning. I know it was the oysters as I was the only one that didn’t consume them. Really need to re evaluate how they sort their food as I’ve just read this has happened to multiple people… be warned!! Lovely atmosphere and staff but may get food poisoning from the oysters 🤢🤢

Had the best meal we have had for a while. I had the oysters because our friends had eaten here recently and said how good the food was. I take issue with the previous reviewer making unsubstantiated comments that this restaurants food had made him and his partner ill. How come this is allowed that people can slag off a restaurant without medical proof... Our experience was scallop starter, octopus starter and 6 oysters were terrific. Following the Portofino recommendation, we had Red Mullet and monkfish tagliatelle which were just superb.... Thank you for and enjoyable gastronomic feast and people... Don't believe everything you read... Try this restaurant for yourselves. It's the best

My husband and I came for a meal here and had the loveliest time. Food was brilliant and they catered for my gluten free diet really well. The wait staff were very attentive and considerate and the atmosphere was relaxed and mellow. The food options were very varied and delicious!

Came here Saturday afternoon. Didn't book but were able to eat at the counter. We had 6 rock oysters and seafood from the counter. The food was delicious and full of flavour. Staff were friendly and nothing was too much trouble even though they were very busy. Ordered a selection on items, went and got bottles from The Offy so we could have 2x bottle of processco with our food. Lovely place

Our first visit to Bath and to Portofino Oyster Bar. We would thoroughly recommend! Food was delicious and everything was freshly cooked. The staff were extremely welcoming, knowledgable and pleasant. Definitely try this restaurant, we don’t think you will be disappointed.

Food was lovely, let down by cold air blowing onto us. Our food inevitably went cold quick, we were freezing. Told staff who said the heating was on, then a waitress sat to have her break and put her coat on. Didn't finish my meal. Went elsewhere for desert and coffee. Won't be returning.

What a hidden gem! Lovely comfortable restaurant serving top notch seafood. Very inventive but show casing classical cooking at its best! A small menu ensures super fresh fish and sea food. Would highly recommend and will definitely be back!

Had a fantastic evening with Mum and sisters. The fish of the day a whole wild Sea Bass was amazing. Can recommend the seafood soup the monkfish pasta and the sea Bass with samphire, octopus, potatoes and mussels. The staff were very attentive and the atmosphere was relaxed and congenial. Trebbiano wine also slipped down well.

I had the most delicious magical feast of oysters, bubbles and seafood with my daughters at Portifino Bath. The service was AMAZING, our every whim was catered for with curteous and efficient charm. Can't wait to return for another special meal, the evening will live long in the memory.

This is such a gem! The interior is lovely, makes you feel like you are at a restaurant in a different country. The food is amazing and at a very high standard!!! You need to try their mussels- I've never had anything like it before! More than that, they were never my go to. Honestly I don't know what they do to them but they taste amazing! Staff are attentive and helpful with recommendations.

A delightful experience - really good local oyster and a most excellent seafood chowder. The staff are friendly and engaging making sure you enjoy your experience. Lots of ‘local’ atmosphere which makes it a lovely experience especially as the staff make you feel very welcome. Great seafood and well worth a visit but booking is a must.

We were lucky enough to experience the taster menu twice last year, a wonderful experience which has stayed in our memory. This year we visited Wheelers with a couple of friends for lunch, unfortunately due to timings we were unable to book for the taster menu in the evening. The restaurant was very busy,but we had booked well in advance for our table of 4. Service initially was a little rushed, but still friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The food, once again, was sensational, everything from crab cakes ( which apparently have been on the menu for 25 years), cod, served with gazpacho, lobster lasagne, sea trout, perfectly cooked scallops, Oriental prawn and scallop dumplings, beautiful fresh Whitstable native oysters and the list goes on... As if this wasn't enough, a myriad of delights on the deli counter on the way out. We could never tire of this place, or the innovative new dishes (or even the old faithfuls). Just wish we were closer to Whitstable! One not to miss.

A lovely seafood restaurant with very friendly staff. We didn't have a reservation and they found a table for us. The food was good, not fantastic but good. The menu has a good selection and the prices are on the high end of reasonable.

Unfortunately, we spent a lot of money to eat a whole crab and half a lobster with the strongest ammonia flavor. We clarified - is it normal for there to be a smell in these seafood? The staff's answer is yes, it's a normal smell. Either the staff working here is not qualified, or we were simply deceived. Of course, you can work only to earn money, but...we had a child with us who also ate all the seafood with us. The result of visiting this restaurant: three adults and a child with nausea. The scallops came with sand. This is also very unpleasant. Never go to this restaurant again Update. We are used to a variety of fresh fish and a greater selection of fresh seafood. Eating seafood and being able to disassemble it are two different things for us. So please don't jump to conclusions. However, the crab and lobster smelled of ammonia. That's why we asked your employee about this completely unusual smell for food. We didn't take the whole meal, just a portion of the risotto. And only because this dish and your carbonara were delicious.

Sea food tasting menu at its best. We booked it way in advance as I read how popular it is. Very intimate settings. So intimate that we ended up chatting to the couple next to us and shared our wines with them. BYO with £5 corkage. The off license opposite has some of the finest wines and champagnes. Food is delicate, fresh, beautifully presented and served by some of the friendliest staff. Really enjoyed our meal and ended up staying late. Everyone left and we were the only ones chatting away. The staff silently waited and no one interrupted to have us out. So thoughtful. Will remember this experience.

We booked Wheelers on the strength of other reviews. We booked well in advance as I know they get booked up quickly. The tasting menu we had on Saturday night was so good, every dish was full of taste and a real social occasion as we all discussed the various dishes. It was a bring your own alcohol restaurant which we knew in advance which also worked really well and kept the overall cost down. Mark, the head chef made a point of coming out at the end of the evening and talking to the diners - really nice touch.

We have just had as good a meal as we have ever experienced in a restaurant. We enjoyed the taster menu and every course was without exception perfect. If you want the norm in a run of the mill identikit setting please feel free to walk on by. This was the complete opposite; wonderfully executed food served by attentive staff. 3 and a half hours later and our only regret was not being able to manage the optional cheese course. Great to chat to the chef once we were done and interesting to hear how he creates the menu. It’s BYOB but the Offy opposite did a lovely good value selection. A Whitstable essential restaurant.

Have been many times before as always beautiful tasting food Starter was superb & main courses If your ever going to Whitstable ring & book a table in advance. Mainly fish dishes but you won’t be disappointed.

Only do taster bars meals after 18:00 - unable to book for a meal so why say open till 8:00pm? Don’t understand how tripsdvisor allow this to come up on their filter for a meal

We came here without a booking on a Friday and had no problems getting a table. We were tempted by the catch-of-the-day fish dish on the menu, which was not particularly cheap, but we fancied some fresh fish. When it came it was simply but nicely served, and tasty enough. But from the texture and dryness, it is dubious whether this was a sea bass grilled from fresh, most probably it came from the freezer. There was a small problem with the bill which was eventually sorted and we paid the promised prise in the end. The decor in this restaurant is lovely and the staff were pleasant and polite.

The best taster menu I have ever eaten . The food was out of this world, attention to detail on each dish was truly stunning. The flavours of all the dishes complemented each other amazing restaurant that I will definitely be visiting again

Absolutely delicious fully recommend but do book it can be very busy. Tasting menu very filling so you need to have a good appetite but al a carte and take away fine with good choice options. You need to enjoy fish and seafood though. Small restaurant with tables close together but great atmosphere. Bring your own wine is fab because we prefer organic with no sulphites … and few medium priced restaurants supply this option. Definitely my fav Whitstable High Street restaurant

A small oasis amidst the hustle and bustle around Bath's landmark sites. The ambiance is purely Italian with very tasteful preparations of oysters, splendid wines and the best tiramisu you'll find in the UK. Don't forget to cap it off with a real espresso. Attentive waiters take care of all your needs giving you a very enjoyable experience. Quite pricy lunch, but you only live once don't you?

A great little seafood restaurant with great service and a romantic atmosphere. The food was really good and I would highly recommend giving this place a try. The prices are a little high but worth it. If I ever find myself back in Bath I may visit again.

It was a last-minute choice to come here for dinner and it was busy. That didn't stop our waiter from giving us time and being brilliant though. Oysters are fabulous. Simple and well presented and the Risotto is excellent. We did go to town a bit, as it was the last evening of our holiday, and enjoyed every minute and every mouthful.

What a find for a wonderful Sunday lunch celebrating my Husband’s birthday! The food was fabulous and we also had great fun with the staff who were friendly and open with their recommendations when we were torn between menu choices. We will definitely go back on an evening to enjoy the Tasting Menu.

Awesome food, spacious dinning area, and the staff are just attentive and caring. Oysters are fresh the grilled octopus are great appetizers. Portions for mains are generous and I must recommend the half lobster and whole crab (they are on Today’s Special on our visit on 23rd July).

Bright and breezy. Very good starters. Generous portions,almost a meal in themselves. Nice bread on the side with taponade. Mains also good though my spaghetti with seafood was on the salty side. A wee bit noisy, no soft furnishings to soak up the chatter . We will definitely go again. Great that Bath has a proper fish restaurant.

It's been our second visit to Portofino and we really enjoyed it. + good selection of seefood, fast and professional service. Delicious bread, oysters, Fish and octopus. We will definitely come back and strongly recommend this place. - Slightly strange that chef serving grilled octopus with little pot of sweet chilli sauce in my opinion they don't much. Opposite way my "day special" Red. Mullet came without any sauce, so I have to ask some tartar. Overall food quality and portion sizes are very good! Thank you
