The sign behind the counter says “I don’t sell fast fish, I sell good fish” and that’s exactly what we got! Just had large & medium cod and chips cooked fresh and I have to say it was excellent! We’ve tried a lot of different fish and chips around Herne Bay & Whitstable and none have been as good as what we’ve just had from Britannia fish and chips. We will be back again :) A++++++++ and also a very friendly service.

The best option for great food in Herne Bay. Owner, has a passion for food that is evident in every dish and presentation, and fabulously fresh ingredients. Lovely food, reasonably priced and good portions of food. Well worth the money. Very Clean, and brilliant service. Thank you always for looking after us and just being the great place you are! Great fresh tasty fish and chips with friendly staff. Owner gave me some very nice curry sauce as a freebie as well as some lovely chips to eat whilst I was waiting. All cooked fresh. Light batter. Nothing greasy.Huge portion. Best chippy in town. Good price.

Definitely the largest cod I've had in Kent. As a regular customer, I can confirm that you can always taste the freshness of the fish, you wont find another shop with fresher tasting fish than here! I can also guarantee that the chips are always cooked to perfection. I love their consistency in cooking excellent food, I've never been let down. Always will be my no1 food place!

Highly recommend the Shakey Shakey seasoning and peri peri salt. Only one table for eating in but if you’re lucky it’s worth it. Takeout and delivery - lunch and dinner.

Excellent service and nice fish and chips. Big chunky portions and plenty of chips. Guy knows about gluten really well and avoids cross-contamination. He even offered gluten free chips. He gave some chips to munch on while we waited. Excellent shop recommendations.

Nice food, lovely staff very chatty, they even visited me at home to drop off my wallet that I left in the shop after there shift which I didn't realise I had left till they turned up at my door, would defo recommend.

I know it was past 9pm when we decided to get some chips on the way home so for a start we didn’t have a great deal of choice for places to go but to be charged £9.70 for five fish bites & a very small portion of extremely dried up chips was beyond a joke. I understand it was near the end of the evening for them but they must have known the state of the chips when charging my husband £3.50 for them. Perhaps they could have been thrown in for free which might have made them slightly more palatable. The fish bites were fine as they were cooked fresh. Needless to say we won’t be returning.

It was OK on delivery, but I just collected from the high street this time and it was absolutely marvellous. Service was very friendly and gave us a small cone of chips as an appetiser while we waited. The dear man said he loves to see people and would prefer that to phone orders.

Sad experience with old chips served for our £20+ order. Fish was freshly made but chips were definitely old and dry.

The fish was freshly cooked and good. The chips were a little overcooked. The guys serving were helpful and friendly. The mushy peas were excellent.

Excellent fish bar. Went in there tonight and was served instantly. Very friendly. Really good sausage & chips. There was no queue for me tonight. Couldn’t believe it. They deserve to have queues all the way up the street. Highly recommended.

Staff were friendly, portions were generous, prices were reasonable and gluten free batter was available. The GF fish took a little longer because they keep a separate fryer which they had to warm up.

By far the best fish and chips I've had in Herne Bay, much better than the restaurants on the sea front. Chips are a great quality, not stodgy like other establishments. Great range of food on the menu, cannot recommend enough!

Totally tasteless burger just shoved in a plain bun. It had no salad or sauce and the chips tasted old. Nothing like the lovely Shakey Shakey food we used to get there. A disappointing meal and my partner feels the same.

Fantastic chips hot and really taste so good, had cod, batter lovely light not greasy, also had battered sausage, also good , will now make this my go to fish and chip shop, even though I have one closer, well worth the extra walk. If you keep this up you will have no worries.

Worst fish & chips I've had....chips mainly contained crisps and the ones that actually had a softness to them were chewy. Disgusting and at the extortionate price you pay definitely not returning or recommending to anyone. The only reason I have given one star is because you can't post without one.

Shakey shakey fish bar - Always delicious and a must when we visit the coast. They do gluten free and it tastes normal 👌👌. Such a treat when being allergic to gluten, usually restricts this kind of food. Fresh cooked chips to snack on why you wait and big portions so make sure you are hungry 🤤

Not sure what’s happened to this place but it’s gone so far downhill. Ordered a variety of things and the chips were cold, soft and oily, the sausage was undercooked and the saveloy was brown inside. I did get my money back but honestly avoid this place like the plague unless you want to loose a few lb’s from food poisoning.

Lovely people and the food is great

It is very difficult to find a decent veggie burger (that is not just a quorn/soya patty). I am delighted to report the veggie burger here is delicious. You can see the vegetables in light fluffy potato with a perfect breaded coating. Mine wasn't overcooked either, which again, happens a lot at other places. The chips were also delicious (real spud taste!) They have my loyal custom from now on!

Britannia fish bar was a great pit stop on my adventures. The shop has just had an owner change less than three months ago. I enjoyed every bite of my fish cakes and chips. I will be back soon hopefully sooner than later. Next time I will get curry sauce to go with this. Hopefully, it will be as tasty as the fish cakes. Thank you

We visited the Britannia Fish Bar yesterday evening. We ordered online prior to arrival, being given a timeslot for collection. Order was ready on time. Service was friendly and polite. Massive portions of fabulous food, we had haddock and chips. Was given a cold can of drink whilst I waited (as I arrived a tad early). They even gave our dog a free sausage to eat when it had cooled. Highly recommend Britannia Fish Bar, we will definitely return!!

Great fish and chips, tasty scampi. Skin removed on the cod was a nice touch, crisper batter underneath. Shakey shakey seasoning worth adding, adds a lemon and pepper-y hit. Really nice to see where the fish is from and today's potato variety on a board inside. 5* chippy 👍

The best bar none!!! Tip: the shakey shakey is an awesome seasoning. Just think very hard before you ask for shakey shakey AND salt and vinegar on you chips!

This is a five star chip shop. Hand cut chips, cooked while we waited and if you want, try the shakey shakey spices on them. The information board also tells where today's fish was sourced. Friendly staff ... well worth a visit

I've been going to this place for years as it's the only place I can get gluten free battered sausage that doesn't cause me stomach pain. I knew it had changed hands a few years back but it was still good so I kept going. However, the last time I went they said they didn't have gf sausage so I just ordered something else, figured they'd just run out. Went again today, rang ahead with my order, gf sausage and gf chips, they said it was fine. But AGAIN, when I got there, they said they didn't have it and gave me a normal one instead! I figured I'd try it but a few bites in it was so greasy I couldn't eat any more. I asked them to put salt, vinegar and Shakey Shakey seasoning on the chips (this seasoning is half the reason for visiting!) and when I opened the bag up they hadn't bothered to put anything on them! Plus, I'm pretty sure they weren't gf chips as they usually do these made to order but the chips I was given were overcooked, dry and pretty inedible. So it seems they have less to offer now in the way of gf options and quality has gone down overall. Such a disappointment after going here for so many years! It's really gone downhill. I think it has changed hands a second time which is why it's not as good. After tonight I found the shop in Ramsgate run by the original owners and ate from there, had a much nicer time and will go there from now on.

Since the change over, the food has gone down hill. The staff I have to say are lovely and chatty, but it’s just not the same. First of all, I believe they didn’t give us Gluten Free Battered fish, as my wife was ill for a couple of days after with belly pains. The batter was too thick, and too much excess at the ends, which was horrible to eat. The chips have changed, and just not the same. And had no Shakey Shakey to sell. Due to this, we will no longer be coming here, I cannot risk my wife getting ill again !!! Such a shame, it used to be great.

Highly recommend the very short walk from the sea front to get your fish and chips from here, genuinely one of the best tasting and well cooked we've had. Great customer service and chat while you wait for them to cook from fresh too! They only take cash at the moment but there is a cash machine through the coop which is just next door. Photo is of our large cod and chips, perfect size for two adults to share. Trust in the excellent and well deserved Google rating these guys have and you won't be disappointed.
