City Fish Bar in Canterbury

How anyone could get fish and chips this wrong is beyond me. I went in and ordered the takeaway myself thinking I would be served fresh hot food. Instead I was given fish that I could only describe as slimey sludge and cold oily chips that my dog even declined (he’s not picky). I wouldn’t pay a penny for the crap I was served let alone £8 for a portion! Just terrible! Avoid, avoid, avoid!!!

You can smell the award winning fish and chips of the city fish bar before you even see it. Great food, great prices, great location, fantastic aroma!

ordered cod and chips to be delivered via uber eats on saturday evening. it was late being delivered because the cyclist could not find the address.By then the meal was starting to cool down. There was roughly about 6 ounces of fish which was in two pieces and 12 ounces of batter. I had to through it away as it was not edible and very disappointing

I was in Canterbury for the day and happened up this chip shop. Great value at £8.20 for a huge piece of haddock and chips. It was made to order and the staff was so helpful and friendly. The haddock was top quality and was not over breaded. This was a great treat during COVID when so many places have closed or only over take away. I highly recommend this play when visiting Canterbury!

Popped in around lunchtime for fish and chips. Apart from it being spot on, the two chaps running the place provides perfect customer service. In the 20 minutes I took to eat, they made me a cuppa, served a lady outside because she couldn’t fit her pram through the door, split an elderly man’s open order of chips into two so they wouldn’t get cold, and attempted to speak/learn Spanish from three schoolgirls who came in and tried to order food.The world needs more people like this. 10/10.

Quizás el mejor pescado y papas fritas que he probado en Inglaterra y he comido mucho pescado y papas fritas jaja. A veces el pescado no tiene sabor en absoluto, pero la masa estaba deliciosa en esto. Las patatas fritas también estaban ricas. Definitivamente ve aquí y en ningún otro lado! Volveré si visito Canterbury nuevamente. Sin embargo, me gustaría que hicieran su propia salsa tártara.

Had a delivery on the 4th of Feb. Fish was tasteless, chips tasted underdone. Not nice at all. My bin liked it.

The Petri family serve the best fish & chips around! I don’t usually eat the batter on my cod , but the batter is so light and delicious, I ate it all. Excellent service and atmosphere, make this the best fish and chip shop. Give it a try, you will not be disappointed.

You’ll pay nearly eight quid for a paltry sized fish portion with chips. I had to get something else to eat afterwards. My fish was covered in thick, undercooked claggy tasteless batter, supplied with a plastic fork to eat outside on a bench in November. This does not represent good value or good quality for the premium price of what is a basic English dish. Chips were good but all in all, I won’t be going back.

This is the third time that I have taken my French friends here to experience English fish and chips. Again, we were not disappointed - chips large cut and soggy; fish full of flavour and not over-battered.Service was efficient and friendly and nothing was too much trouble.This place has now become a 'must' when my French friends visit me, for the day, in Canterbury.

Después de haber visitado esta tienda de pescado y papas fritas hace 2 años, estaba manchada con chips dorados y pescado encantador, recién derretida en su mes, el pasado fin de semana estaba asqueada por las manchas negras de los chips y sin sabor, el pescado todavía tenía la piel como para la masa que no estaba cocida, y para colmo, estaba comiendo con las palomas locales, solo se necesita la caída de esas aves y tienes un problema, agradezco a los niños en el otro banco por alimentar papas fritas para ellos que estaba tratando de comer mi pescado y papas fritas que no lo hice al final del día agrupados ¡No recomiendo a nadie que los coma hasta que se ordene su higiene alimentaria! !

Had some lovely tasty fish n chips here ....staff were very helpful n very polite and gave us fantastic service at lunchtime on a friday ... fish was beautifully battered and chips were fresh n had a great crisp to them .... perfect .....better than my local chip shops

Je ne peux pas me rendre à Canterbury sans m’arrêter au City Fish Bar pour manger un traditionnel fish and chips! C’est tout simplement délicieux! Ici on ne s’encombre pas de belle vaisselle et de tralala! On sert dans des barquettes en carton et on mange sur les bancs pic-nic en terrasse! Pas de salle de restaurant. Mais un service niquel, une qualité exceptionnelle et un service d’une gentillesse ! Plus que conseillé!

The fish and chips were ok. The fish was fresh, but in one serving still had the skin on it. The chips did not seem to be freshly made- there were some bits and pieces. It was not a bad lunch, but not one of the best either.

Just passed the City Fish Bar .I have had Fish and chips from them on many occasions,but have never bothered to put it on Trip Advisor Today was different I decided to eat in rather than take it away.The service was brilliant for me as I use a stick and I find it difficult to walk with bags of shopping,my stick and carry food to a table.I did not have to worry as a young man saw me looking and asked if he could help in anyway was I looking to have a Fish and chip meal,I replied yes the only thing is I don't want to go to the counter buy it and then not be able to find a table.With that he said no worry I will find you a table etc and I will take your order and with that I just said yes please that's brilliant.I must just mention that this Fish and chip shop has a take way service,and is always very busy.my cod and chips were excellent.There are a few tables inside and more outside and I noticed that all the tables and chairs were new.

Living in Holland and returning every year to the UK we usually stop off in Canterbury, a taste of home is something on every ex-pats wish list so fish and chips are number one! My wife and I have tried quite a few chippies but City Fish Bar is always our hot spot for delight, they never fail to please, gorgeous cod and batter, big thick English chips, mushy peas, sausage in batter, everything! -we love it. It’s only a small place but always full which tells you how popular they are, we’ll be driving over to the UK again next year and they’ll be mentioned 2 or 3 times in the car on the way over, they’re simply the best ..by far.

Ambos sabrosos bien cocidos nos sentamos fuera y disfrutamos de nuestras comidas. Hemos comido aquí antes, bueno, bueno otra vez. Precio 7. 80 cada uno. Visité aquí después de visitar la Catedral de Canterbury por recomendación de un local. Era un buen día, así que comimos en una mesa afuera y observamos la actividad en la calle. Fue fenomenal El bacalao se cocinó perfectamente, crujiente y sabroso en una masa que no goteaba aceite. Las patatas fritas eran frescas y cocinado a la perfección. Me senté junto al mostrador y me entretuve con el personal también, informándome sobre los 'secretos' de Canterbury. Muy recomendable.

Me alegra informar que sigue siendo la peor tienda de pescado y papas fritas en Canterbury. El personal joven es muy agradable, pero el viejo no debería estar sirviendo al público ya que es grosero y hosco. Este lugar sirve la porción más pequeña de papas fritas que se pueden comprar en Canterbury y los productos cárnicos parecen estar hechos de lo que nan llamaría 'labios y pajaritos' (no no el viejo) y uno de nuestros grupos de pescado estaba tan seco que Estaban convencidos de que había sido advertido desde el día anterior. Después de una mala experiencia anterior, me comprometí a no volver a ir, pero todos merecen una segunda oportunidad, ¿no? Parece que estaba equivocado. Al día siguiente, llevamos a nuestros invitados a una verdadera tienda de pescado y papas fritas llamada Canterbury tails y quedaron muy impresionados.

Bon fish and chips en terrasse dans une jolie rue piétonne. Le prix est correct 7,40£. Cependant impossible de manger à l’intérieur donc heureusement pour nous il faisait très bon. Bien pour manger sur le pouce.

There are lots of good eateries in Canterbury, a ver decent fish ‘n chip shop is City Fish & Chips in the center, about 2 minutes walk from the Cathedral. Locals go there as well, so you know it’s okay!

Always a go to restaurant, little family run business with the best food, always polite and kind and the shop is clean with lovely service. The food is so yummy and always cooked to the best standards, affordable prices. Wouldn’t recommend anywhere else. City fish bar is the place to go in Canterbury :)

We had just been to the Roman museum and saw a local couple with a bag of chips each. They recommend this place and my family and I really enjoyed our meals. We will definitely stop here again the next time we visit Canterbury.

The chips are lovely and the staff are very friendly. The medium portion is quite small hence only 4 *. We went for lunch and to chill out for a few minutes as we have done many a time before, but the shop opposite had a man come out and play the bugle, it was deafening, it was far too loud, this carried on for what seemed forever, then he came over and started asking people eating there meals questions. Thought this very rude. Not enjoyable at all. (I have not marked the fish shop down for this, but it needs to be stopped)

We are here tonight, sitting outside. 3 had fish and chips which were all great. I had calamari and chips as well as mushy peas. We were impressed with the service as well as the food. And we're northern so we have high chippy standards.

Seduti all'aria aperta in una strada abbastanza tranquilla abbiamo potuto assaggiare un classico pesce ben impanato, gustoso, salato bene...ma troppo unto! Peccato per questa pecca, che rendeva il pesce non gradevole come sarebbe stato se l'olio fosse stato asciugato dopo la frittura. Buone, ma anch'esse strabordanti di olio, le patate. Prezzi giusti, anche sotto la media.

City Fish Bar tours itself to have the "best fish and chips" in town, and I would have to agree. Tucked into a side-street near Canterbury Cathedral, City Fish Bar is a busy shop that always seems to have a line waiting. The staff is friendly and helpful, and they serve up good quality food for a good price. If I lived nearby, this would be a place I would frequent often. No question.

Great little fish & chip shop that has the friendliest of staff to serve you, who use good quality ingredients, plus they make proper chips how they should be.

The title says it all. The team running the lunch counter couldn't have been more friendly. They were charming, inviting, and were making sure everyone in their restaurant (and even people who were only trying to get out of the rain) were happy. The fish was perfect and the chips were FRESH and HOT! Wonderful, quaint restaurant after visiting the Cathedral. Do not miss!

My honorary French daughter and her family came to Canterbury for the day to celebrate my birthday by eating fish and chips. I/they had never visited the 'chippy before but were more than pleasantly surprise by the experience. It was a warm, sunny day so we were very fortunate to find seats outside as there was only a small outside seating area which was very full.

Given that it’s a pure fish & chips restaurant the expectations were really high. So the result was a bit disappointing. It wasn’t bad nor special either.

Mes neveux ont pris des nuggets frites, et pour 9 on a en a eu pour 64 livres aves trois canettes en plus. Repas économique et bon.

What fantastic service, the food is always amazing but the service is outstanding. The staff could do no more for us, making an empty table and chairs appear as if from nowhere, and it wasn't just for us, I watched them the whole time I was enjoying my delicious meal and the level of service didn't falter, amazing!!!

Having lived in Canterbury all my life and having been a regular customer here since the 80's I sad to leave the following review. The older balding man was incredibly rude to my wife and I. I was so shocked I felt only disbelief at what I heard and left without saying anything. I don't know what his problem is and frankly I don't really care but if you are serving the public you should be polite at all times. And also, the other issue is that after recently changing hands this is no longer the best chip shop in Canterbury, it's certainly the most expensive but the food is just mediocre. I hope they read this review and learn the lesson, don't piss off your customers! I will not be visiting again.

after a day out in town with my friends we decided to all get lunch before heading home so we decided to have fish and chips. never again. the fish was tiny and the chips were disgusting. I couldn't eat mine it tasted that bad the batter was greasy and soggy and so were the chips.well overpriced for such rubbish. the staff were rude when I asked them about the portion size they charged £7.50 for a portion no bigger then a kids meal. won't go there again. stay clear of this place it's a rip of they just want your money and don't care what they give you.will go else where next time

After ten months out of the UK I couldn't wait to taste somegood fish and chips. I asked for haddock and got cod, the fish wasn't fresh and the batter was soggy. The chips were warm and hard. For £7.50 for a tiny portion I really expected more. Staff couldn't have cared less. It feels like this is just a tourist driven money making venture and not at all traditional. Very disappointing.

Visited Canterbury for the day on a busy bank holiday.We saw the outdoor seating and decided to have lunch here.Very friendly efficient Chaps running the business.Food hot and freshly cooked was very tasty BUT the portions of chips were small and I don't think I've ever seen a smaller Haddock!Over priced for size of portions!

Oh my gosh, the fish there was so great! Fresh, delicious (loved the batter), chips tasted like good ol'chips as well. We weren't extremely hungry, so we got one portion to share, which was quite enough. Then we got tempted to try the famous deep fried Mars bar - a guilty pleasure, but very tasty. Went for a diet right after ;) But - honestly - if I lived anywhere nearer, I would definitely be a frequent flyer.

Visited this place several times and never was good enough. Portions of fish and chips are very small even you order large.. also it's very expensive. I recommend to visit Ossie's which is few minutes walking distance and is much more better.

Despite the fact that this place is in Tourist Trap Land, right next to The Canterbury Tales, the service and quality of the cod and chips I had was amazing. Highly recommended.

We stopped in on a rainy afternoon after an evensong service at the Cathedral with just enough time for fish and chips before catching our train back to London. The cooks struck up a conversation as the fish was cooking. It was clear that they are very careful about the temperature of the oil which means that these fish and chips were crisp on the outside and tender within without any white grease congealing on the sidewalk as it drips off the fish, as I had once in Windsor. Both the fish and the chips were perfectly prepared and delicious. Portions are generous and very good value. Vegetarian options are available in the form of batter fried mushrooms. It is obvious that these guys really enjoy making fish and chips.

Had the chips with curry sauce, nice crispy chips with the stock standard curry sauce. Service was quick and easy with the sever getting the pre cooked chips out of a tray we were a bit sceptical but were really nice and fresh. Took 30 seconds to get our chips.

SO GOOD! I grew up going to school in Canterbury and have been going to this chip shop for close to 10 years now and it has never disappointed. Good value and on the menu you can get everything you want from your classic British fish and chip shop. The staff are really friendly and always greet you with a smile. Been there three times and each visit I ordered haddock. Each time they 'just happen to have had one ready'. Only fish and chip shop I've ever been to that has haddock already done. Each time it's been awful - in my judgement it wasn't haddock or even cod. Whiting,possibly pollock. Watery. Awful. Big question - why did I go back a 2nd and 3rd time ? Never again.
