Not the best , oily , not yummy, the fish has no taste

Ordered a delivery of cod and chips via justeat, food arrived soggy and uncooked. Went straight in the bin, phoned to be told to reorder on the app. Not sure I want to pay again for another delivery to go in the bin. Justeat never refunded.

We ate here yesterday at lunch. -took 2 fish and chips, and a kids chicken nuggets. -we paid (cash only by the way, which in 2024 seems very dodgy) -Asked for a couple of ketchup and mayo packets, you know, those ones which are tiny and usually free (50p each, but didn’t tell us the price before we consumed them and made us pay!!) - I then double checked the receipt and saw they counted an adult chicken nuggets portion for my order, and not a kids one like on their menu -claimed I didn’t say I wanted a kids menu. I literally said “for the kid I’ll take a chicken nuggets menu”. Oops. I didn’t say the exact magic words they were expecting, and the 3 year old wasn’t a hint that we wanted something small. -Portions were very small and chips under-done, not the worst tasting I’ve ever had but not great in the slightest. I hadn’t noticed my daughter’s portion wasn’t a child’s portion. Price is insanely high for the quantities though, you get about half what you’d get anywhere else in town for the same price, we’ve tried a few places so we know what to expect in the area. Please review your practices, this is a very dishonest way to do business. I strongly suggest trading standards have a look here, they work a bit like a Mediterranean tourist trap.

My children took over the restaurant and Pedro was amazing. He entertained them for close to an hour (even put a song on, which they all danced to together). And the food was amazing! Pedro - Averil and Marshall from Canada have made a friend for life. (Poop!)

Stopped to get a couple of portions of chips , chips were greasy and not well cooked and tiny curry sauce was £2.50 , I will never use again

I’ve been going to this fish and chip shop since I was in secondary school 26 years ago. I moved to Sydney, renowned for its seafood and I can honestly say City Fish Bar is still the best fish and chips in the whole world. Not only that, but the family that run it are lovely. I would be devastated if this place ever closed, so please support them if you are in the area! I make it my mission to go every time I’m home. 😊

Abominable. The fish is totally unseasoned/unsalted and the oil tastes off. Unhealthy food but without the satisfaction...

NOT RECOMMENDABLE. PRICE CHANGED FOR TOURISTS. WRONG PRICE. There is a sign: "Fish and Chips and a 330ml soft drink £13.50" They charged us more. 3 fish and chips, a coke, a Fanta and a beer ALL £45. I think that if the beer is worth £5 it is very expensive. Plus Fanta and Coca Cola are given to you in cans and dirtier than anything. The visit is not RECOMMENDED

This is ridiculous! As you can see in the photo, I requested for a medium size chips, and it was extra small (size), and I paid £3.80! What a waste of money! I am not recommending anyone to buy from there!!

As a family we have used this fish bar for nearly 30 years. This was the first time I’d been in for 12-24 months and oh what a shame. The staff were lovely as always but the cod and chips were expensive and just poor quality. I purchased two cod and chips meals. Both pieces of fish were wafer thin and not nice and white. The chips had more black than white! The first person threw them in the food bin after 2 minutes. The second person shared with a child and there wasn’t even close to enough to feed either person. Small portions, poor quality, so expensive. I’m gutted because this place brought me so many happy memories.

Our first visit, we both had cod, chips & mushy peas (honestly the best mushy peas we've had in a long time). Really good value, especially for a busy 'tourist city'. The customer service was amazing - as we sat down outside to eat it started to rain, a member of staff quickly picked our food up & moved us to a table under the awning! The owner told us that this family-run restaurant has been in business for 40 years & it shows! Highly recommended.

Wow, amazing, tasty, freshly cooked to order fish and chips. One haddock and a cod with chips. Excellent quality. Cash only though, not an issue as there is a cash machine over the road.

Nothing smashing, just a run of the mill fish and chips joint. Won’t amaze, and won’t hurt.

We treated ourselves to scampi & calamari and it was bloody delicious! Will definitely be back x

Went today, paid over £6 for a medium chips that felt more like a small and a plain small sausage that was £3! Absolute rip off.

Have never been to this place before but the food was absolutely, amazing. I order fish & chips, the chips was really nicely cut, fish was not to oily. The only downfall which is not a criticism, is that as a big guy the portion size could of been alittle bigger. But all in all absolutely perfect, service was really quick and they also deliver on deliveroo as well, which is also handy. Definitely a solid 9/10 for me 🔥💯👍🏾🔥. Thanks very much 😊

Went on thursday with my husband we had the smallest portion of fish and chips I've ever had looked like a child's portion £26 for 2 portions absolutely disgraceful will not be returning and certainly won't recommend been many times in the past we are local people not tourist who you can scam with your portions and prices stay away lots of places eat elsewhere at reasonable prices and you won't be hungry after you have eaten😡

Nearly 30 pounds for two orders of fish and chips and a couple of sides. The portions were like children's portions and I was still hungry after eating it. The food was thoroughly average for the price. I think they hope to prey on unsuspecting tourists who don't know any better, which is pretty shoddy. Needless to say, I won't be returning. "large" chips barely enough for a child

Has the City Fish Bar changed Management? For many years when we have a shopping trip to Canterbury we usually finish off with a really good Fish n Chips from the City Fish Bar, as good as any of the best Chippy's in Kent. Until yesterday that is, when it was the worst we have ever had from there! Gone was the lovely thin crispy light batter and golden crispy chips and what we got was two very small portions of soggy chips and two small pieces of Haddock covered in a think soggy gloopy batter! And at nearly £12 each this must now be one of if not the most expensive Fish n Chippy's anywhere in the UK.... Add a few small sachets of ketchup and you are looking at nearly £25 for two.... We can get a good main meal for two in our local for that. So I guess that's what we will be doing in future.... Such a Shame...

City Fish bar used to be as good as any of the best in Kent. We have been having Fish n Chips from here for many years. It must be under new management because we have just had the worst Fish n Chips ever from City Fish! And it's really expensive now for a Chippy too.

It was our last day on cantabury Yesterday . I dare say this was a tourist trap . I grew up in the uk and I know what real fish and chips are like . They usually give you a really generous portion of chips . However this was the smallest portion I have ever eaten and it’s double the price of what we have paid during our trip on cantabury. We paid £12 for a small fish and a small portions of chips ( like McDonald’s portion large size fries ) And the curry sauce os £2.20 ? I paid £1.50 for the rest of the shops on cantabury . Don’t understand.

Usually really tasty chips but we got deliveroo and one chip had a hair in it, one had blue thread weaved into it, and my friend’s burger exploded with unpleasant juices.I’m not even joking

Absolutely disgusting worst fish and chips I’ve ever had. Got a bone in my cod nearly choking on it and the cod was soggy. The portions are so small as well, if you want to make yourself feel better about your cooking just order from here because they’re a lot worse.

They just tried to scam my poor mother. She was looking forward to enjoying her little fish and chips but they tried to charge her 30£ for it. They then proceeded to lower the price to 20£ and then the eventual 12£ that is actually written on the menu. Absolutely disgusting and ridiculous behavior, taking advantage of elderly tourists. Id give 0 stars if possible.

Overpriced, bland, small portion, fish was too oily, chips tasted like nothing and were to dry! Would not recommend.

Food pretty good but pricey. Could do with better seating outside, benches are an odd choice and the chairs have metal arms on which make the seat small and uncomfortable. Good service though.

My only complaint about the food is the chip servings are just to small for the money you are paying.

It was my only fish and chip shop I ate when I lived in Canterbury for 3 years. Their chips used to be very delicious and I couldn't disagree with their name. Sadly, I tried twice in last 6 months when I visited Canterbury. The quality of the chip went down significantly. I wish I can get the old taste and quality.

Cod was very small they put 2 cans off cold coke in same bag as food so it made food cold

In my opinion and that of my friends, the best Fish & Chips within the city of Canterbury. Peter and his family have been supplying quality fish and chips since 1986? George His father sadly passed away but will always be remembered for his excellent service to the community! Peter continues this tradition, the food is all fresh and they remove the skin from the fish unlike so many others, meaning a fillet of cod is just pure fish not chewy skin. They always cook new potato’s when in season, supplied by a local potato merchant, oil always fresh, and it’s spotlessly clean. As a local business owner myself I’ve had the pleasure of both dining there and sending my clients there in the past. Always super food, great service and super friendly staff, a credit to the community!

Dry horrible chips, cheap nasty sausages, burnt batter, shrivelled saveloys, girl behind the till wiping her nose with her hand constantly. Just Really horrible. Used to really look forward to these fish and chips but massively gone down hill and not sure why they still operate as cash only.

First time using city fish bar, usually go to Marino's and to be honest there you get more fish for less money and better quality, the only reason I didn't go is because they don't open until between 4 and 5

Under cooked chips but usually great On Saturday 31st Dec in the afternoon they were serving under cooked chips sadly not a crunchy chip in sight we spent £20 and really wish the chips had been properly cooked. But this place is usually amazing the staff are lovely and obviously new years eve is a busy day my advice would just be to check the chips are cooked before you pay and leave, we didn't because we don't normally need to.

Unfortunately packing the food requires more attention. My pie was upside down and so squashed on top of my chips it could not be separated. The look of my food could not be described as appetising at all.

Absolutely fantastic service from Pete, the manager. He arranged our family takeaway to perfection, even offering to run it down to where we we parked rather than having to go to the shop. Food was also fantastic, and plenty of it. Really good value for money. Would absolutely recommend and have told all my friends and will definitely return.

Had cod and chips today. Very nice indeed. Fish was well cooked not greasy chips were very good. Fish and chips being my favourite takeaway I would rate these as 4.8 out of 5 only just missing the 5 as the price to volume of food ratio was not as good as a very few others that hit the top spot Still one of the best I've had. Really enjoyed the £12 cod and chips.

Great fish, fast service and helpful staff. The place was recommended to us by our tour guide who took us on the nearby boat cruise. We tried their standard fish and chips. The fish felt fresh and everything was nice and crunchy. Definitely one of the best places in Cantebury to try the traditional fish and chips.

So pleased to spot this place, saved us a long walk out of town. Also we were able to sit and being outside was convenient for us with our dog. Better still, I asked about gluten free and they were able to just flour the fish with gluten free flour and fry, no other chippy has given me that simple option. Some have special days for gluten free, good but not always the right time. Anyway both my floured fish and my husband's battered were really lovely and the chips were perfect. Many thanks.

Has always been a favourite of mine over many years. Not as friendly and mayonnaise in packages now. Drops from a 5 to a 4 star. Still the one to visit though.

Tradicional fish and chips, For me it is the best in Canterbury

We ordered fish nuggets thinking they’ll be like the cod coujons we get from back home in brighton but got a fillet that was cut in 4 portions. Looking at other reviews I think that was his fix on other people complaining that the nuggets were nothing but batter. Still it was hot and yummy and oil wasn’t too old.

The food is cold, and the portions are absolutely tiny. Poor decision to try these guys.

What an amazing experience, from being greeted outside, helped to a table. Super efficient service inside then a really personal touch from the owner (I think) Pete who offered a lovely bit of fun service to my 89 year old mum. She doesn't go out much and the banter and the hug he gave her were fabulous. To him probably an everyday bit of banter to my mum a special day and a memory made. The Food was lovely and so was the tea. The young lady serving us (red head) was so attentive it was like 5☆ service. Honestly, a wonderfully unexpected experience! Well done guys keep this going.
