Dean's Plaice in Canterbury

I went out for a walk with my elderly mother and we decided to have fish and chips in a box and sit in the sun to enjoy them so lunch was a take away. I ordered cod and chips twice and the girl serving said £25 please. My mother said have you got that right and the girl said it's £9 for the cod and £3.50 for the chips. I thought the £9 was for cod and chips. My mother said lets just pay it as she doesn't like fuss. We walked with our box's, sat down and opened them. Talk about wanting things both ways, a very small cod large a inflated large price. Whilst sat we were approached by a group of 4 people who asked where we bought our fish & chips. I told them to look at the size of cod for £9 plus extra for the chips. They said they would give it a miss for that price. Dean's Plaice will never catch me or any of my family again. This place serves small Cod for an over inflated price. Very expensive .

Came here with my son as a treat it was a nice sunny day Thought we would have a take away fish & chips. Ordered 2 x cod & chips , which cost £25 Which I thought was expensive . The cod was small and tasted strange , On returning home I was very unwell with stomach pains . Never again and would not recommend eating here. Staff were very offish . The price was very expensive for what we got.

Not the cheapest (£16 for large cod and large chips) but more than enough for 2 healthy appetites. Would definitely return but regular portion of chips next time.

Recommended by a family member. Food proved to be of good quality, served hot. Cutlery and plates were clean, and we were served by friendly staff. Gone are the days when fish and chips was an inexpensive meal, so I guess they price their food and drinks similar to other establishments. Overall, a good experience and would be happy to endorse.

They were actually cooking and serving up cod that was off, the smell was really strong. Several tables complaining and sending it back. I hope no one gets ecoli

Sent my daughter in for a kids cod and chips twice! £28 later! What a joke Once called up they explained that they don’t do kids meals only in the restaurant day light robbery!!!

Can’t believe my two 11 year olds have just ordered small fish and chips two cans of drink and have been charged £28.60 Don’t you think the person serving them would of said how expensive it was going to be I know they are young but we need to teach our children independence but sometimes this is with the help of others maybe people need to think before just worrying about the money they are taking in there till

Whenever we go to Herne bay we head straight for Dean's plaice for our lunch. Helpful staff and well cooked food at reasonable prices. Best fish and chips for miles around. NB.

I struggled with the score on this one. My wife said excellent I was veering to average. As it's my Trip Advisor account I win. We both had large cod and chips. My wife also had battered sausage and I had saveloy. We shared Mushy peas and I had pickled egg and gherkin. Price was £52.00. Was it the best fish and chips I have ever had, No, was it the the cheapest no but then again it wasn't the most expensive. The service was good and the food was freshly cooked. I found the fish a little bland in taste but my wife says delicious so I guess different tastes. the setting was lovely, the service was good and the restaurant was spotless. Would I go back, yes I would.

This used to be a good place to go for reasonable quality at fair prices. That has changed. This is now a VERY expensive place to eat. £ 11.45 for a bacon, egg & cheese sandwich & a coffee! Who are they kidding, its not the Ritz. Two bacon sandwiches, a portion of chips & 2 teas, £28.50! Rip off. Even the waitress questioned the bill when she ran it up on the till, she though she had made a mistake! So, the place was clean, the service was reasonable & the quality was middle of the road but I shan't be going back because I, like the rest of the people who go in there are being taken for fools.

Whilst the food was amazing. The abruptness of the young waitresses wasn't pleasing or professional.

Not bad staff could be a bit more cheerful when greeting customers. Service was fast, food was fresh, my main gripe is it's massively overpriced, 4 people to have lunch, a drink and 2 of the 4 were kids. £50 is probably the most expensive chippie in kent. Usually I'm a firm believer of you get what you pay for but I've paid a lot less and enjoyed it a lot more.

This is a long established fish and chip restaurant and takeaway on Herne Bay sea front. I was seated in a comfortable booth by the door which was a nice spot on a warm day. I ordered cod and chips which are £14.95 I felt a little too much but I chose to continue with my order. I also added beans for £2 and the portion was huge! My fish was very nice, chunky and with nice batter. There's an option for a larger portion but what I received was more than enough. I only managed half the chips and half the beans. Everything is cooked fresh, you can see it being prepared. They were busy but the food was served quickly and piping hot .

The food was lovely, service was fine. Just one thing, the difference in price of eat in to takeaway is shocking. I have always eaten at Dean's Plaice whenever I go to Herne Bay, which is probably a few times a year. Have to say will sit on the beach and eat it next time.

Taking an American to any uk food establishment is always going to be a challenge, but Dean’s Plaice accepted said challenge and offered lovely cod to shut him up! The manageress was a star! Great food, fresh and enjoyed it a lot. I’m already looking forward to the trip home with him fast asleep after being so well sated 😁🍻 Thanks all!!

Amazing place. Massive portions. Best piece of fish I've had in a loooong time. Very good squid. Staff are baffled if you ask which fish are sustainable... quite sad really seeing as they could easily be informed and it would be good if all fish and chip shops carried the banner for sustainability. It's their livelihood as well as kinda important for the survival of the human race. Hey ho. Superb plaice. Would I go here again? Yes

Food was really unpleasant, burger was the cheapest possible and just gristle, large cod wasn't one piece, but smaller bits held together in claggy batter. Chips were below average, and even the bottles of Sarson's vinegar on the tables had been refilled with cheap rubbish. All in all pretty gross, and not to be repeated!

Me and my friends came to eat good food and service was horrible and we felt intimidated and harassed I wish I could give this place 0 stars but it's not possible.We sat down to eat in and this horrible man got angry and rude

Waiting for 45 mins for food while people arriving after were being served. 7 of us were our for lunch and it was diabolical. Food awful, service awful. Forgot my kids food and when I asked for a plate I was handed a greasy plate twice! Bad quality and bad service. Stay clear.

The fish and chip shop is ideally located on Herne Bay seafront. The fish though tastes a bit bland and dry but the chips are ok. Service friendly.

A very good meal inside, with pleasant and friendly staff. The food itself was value for money, small fish and chips looked like a large. Kids meals are good value too.

Fish and chips. Batter was soft, not at all crispy. The chips were not at all crisp and many of them had black pieces in the potato. Tea was nice but the mug was chipped!! Service was good although no one came to check if everything was okay. Not very impressed!

The service was not that good the waiting time was quick however the staff were not bothered and came across a bit rude they didn't check up on us and cleared half of the plates at the table they did not come back for the rest

Wonderful food. The staff were very friendly and the toilets were immaculate and smelled nice. I have eaten here before and I cannot fault them. A well deserved 5 stars!

Great place to eat if you have small children, plenty of seating areas, staff very attentive and food was lovely.

Popped in with a group that we look after. At first we thought bit pricey but to be fair when the food came out the plates were huge!!!!

Staff more interested in playground chat and mates coming to natter over the counter than actual customers, portion size for the cost was a joke a kids chips no joke had 14 chips in a flat cone as a whole service and food was poor and will be sure to not return to quite frankly be ripped off

Service was very quick,NOW I KNOW WHY!! overpriced 2xlarge chips, £5each scampi,small cod £9, 2xlarge sausages, £32.00 ,then to top it of it was cold Lets just say been seen WON'T be coming back here again .

Got takeaway chips and scampi. Didn't take long, service is fast. Staff are friendly. The food was fresh and tasted really good. Not expensive for the portion size too. Great place, highly recommend

We’ve been coming to Deans Plaice for over 10 years and it’s gone downhill steadily. Such a shame as it used to be so good and affordable. £60 for 4 takeaway fish and chips! Wouldn’t be so bad if they actually tasted good but the fish tasted strange and covered in so much soggy batter you could barely see the fish and the chips also weren’t great. I know cost of living has driven prices high which is fair enough but it doesn’t excuse the poor quality. We won’t come back there now as we haven’t seen any improvements the last few times.

Worst savaloy I've ever had in my life to be fair. Just overall poor quality. Chips were decent. Wouldn't have this as my go to as plenty of begged options but definitely not the worse in Herne bay

Disappointed. Second time we have tried this place, it’s convenient on a trip down to the beach. First time wasn’t great but thought we would give it another chance. But they need to up there game with customer service. No greeting, I had to approach them and asked to be served in the end while they stood there 🤷‍♀️.. there was two young people serving and there was three of us waiting to be served I approached the young girl and asked can you take my order and then she pointed at the boy and he took it instead only for her to go and serve my friends behind me, so not sure what that was about. Was told they do not do kids meals which was fine, strange but thought it’s ok we can share. I ordered cod and and chips and a portion of 5 x nuggets, a can of drink and a bottle of water and it was £23.15. Seemed a bit pricey but understand everything’s gone up. All a bit tasteless sadly , and I couldn’t eat all the cod as I kept finding bones throughout. Shame as it’s in a great position. But unfortunately I won’t be returning.

Nice fish and chips but over priced

Spent the day with family here and although we bought a packed lunch my niece said I had to try Dean's Plaice for some chips. Didn't take much convincing. The chips were gorgeous! Crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, really hit the spot. Next time we are down here we'll come here again.

Very nice food as usual, but PRICES HAVE SHOT UP, so we shared a fish and chips ,as this was a treat. I'll not be able to get this for a while, though. Disabled toilets were clean, but they've never had an upgrade , a bit tight space wise, and very difficult to manoeuvre a walker, i.e., adult stroller (walking aid for adults) The front step is high and no Disabled rail, sane as Disabled toilets More and more older folks want to get out, but 'no ' though has been made

Overpriced and underfed! They said they don’t do child portions but the £14 we paid for cod & chips was child size! Tasteless too! Won’t make that mistake again, I’d rather go into town for better prices and food!

Sadly not a great experience. We were looking forward to fish and chips by the sea. We don't even mind paying a premium for beautifully cooked fresh food. I believe that my haddock had been kept warm for an extended period of time so the batter was like tough cardboard. Never mind I thought, I'll have some lovely crispy chips. No such luck! The chips were oily, anaemic and floppy. Just not great.

Stopped in to eat as it was raining. Very friendly staff. Quick service and lovely food. Nothing wrong with the portion sizes at all as the photos show.

Been coming here for years with the family. Just seems to have gone down hill just recently. I’m not complaining that it’s quite pricey because everything has gone up everywhere! Just don’t understand why the chips are now served in paper bags? Before you finish them they go all mushy and not very nice. And one other thing why they don’t let you put the salt and vinegar on yourself? I get one covid was on the rise, but since then most take aways let you do it. Just the chips are far too salty then had to throw them away which was a waste. Just little changes like that it’ll be fine.

We had the mixed grill, which was really good. Service was quick and efficient. Food was good quality and the bacon tasted amazing. Great portion sizes. Facilities were clean and tidy.

Herne Bay has been a popular spot for bikers to meet and this chipy near the clocktower was always a go to , even if its always been a bit on the expensive side , yesterday however the service was poor - (over charged but refunded when i noticed possibly a new member of staff with no idea how to take orders) and the prices just getting silly . had to wait for chips which is fine but to only give about 20 chips with a cod in a box is megre considering the prices , if your expensive you had ought to be worth it , and sadly this plaice of dean is not , not sure if maybe its changed management but it time for us to find a decent chippy . the fish was nice but overall its not good enough with only a few chips .

Ordered 2 x fish and chips with drinks . A whopping £34. Fish was ok but the chips were an undercooked mushy mess. Much better shops in the area that don’t have the privilege of sea front trade who try much harder to provide quality.

We had cod and chips on Sunday at Dean's plaice and what a treat. Beautifully cooked food, fresh cod, really crispy batter and great chips. The service was excellent and the price was good.

I went to this chip shop yesterday (24/06/23 to buy 4 small cod and chips….the price nearly floored me…£48, when I asked the girl who was serving me if the price was correct, she said yes, £9 for each fish, and £3 for small chips, they appear to charge for each item separately, I didn’t bother to get any sauce with those prices. Other chip shops charge for fish AND chips in the same price I won’t be going back there.

Had large cod, over cooked, very orange, hard to cut through batter. A bit disappointed, expected better for the high price, chips were good though. Probably won't use this chippy again!

Dean's Plaice used to be our go to place when visiting Herne Bay but our recent visit has unfortunately made us look for an alternative. The price has just become too much it was around £18 for cod and chips and £2 for a can of fizzy. The food was standard but there are cheaper places close by.

Food is really pricey. We paid £5 for a "large" (wasn't large - standard anywhere else). Chips were hard. Battered sausage was nice. Won't come again though sadly - far too pricey!

The worst fish and chips I have ever eaten. Hair in the chips and undercooked and fish dry like a paper. Not sure if the fish was re heated or not but really really dry. Never again.

Disgusting! Ripped my child off who’s 11 after she ordered a hot chocolate & charged her £5! £5 for a plain hot chocolate, taking advantage of young children when there’s no adults about is wrong! I will get this back my own way!

Food was pretty good but the service left alot to be desired, had to ask for cutlery more than once, wrong items bought on the order and then said they'd run out if an item after serving more than half of the table so one person was left eating on their own after having to re order

Lovely food but like most places very expensive, no fault of their own due to high gas prices. The waiting staff do try their best but on busy days you could have a wait, was charged for a roll which I never got and our drinks arrived after we were half way through our meal.

We only wanted a takeaway gluten free fish option, although they didn't offer a gluten free batter, they did offer and grilled the fish without the batter, presented in a box with a slice of lemon. Beautifully cooked. £10 cheaper than the shop 50m down the road. Highly recommend a visit if only because the customer service was exemplary but also the food was excellent and great value.

Had the worse meal here in herne bay. Ordered gourmet burger and chips and a cup of tea. The food eventually turned up before my cup of tea. The gourmet burger turned up in a dry lightly toasted bun, with a bland looking burger in it, and dry chips. I wasn't offed condiments, when I enquired about salad, was told I had to ask for it. I didn't eat my meal or drink my tea. Paid and left, very disappointed.

A friendly fish bar and restaurant. Not the cheapest but the quality is worth paying the little extra for. With the restaurant next door, you can eat in or like us, as we had a dog plenty of seating opposite on the seafront. Recommended.

Absolutely delicious and perfectly cooked fish and chips!

Possibly the best fish and chips I have had in a long time when it first opened but it has steadily deteriorated over time. The large cod and chips I had today was nothing but a large chunk of overcooked, rock-hard chunk of batter in which the fish had all but disappeared. Should have been listed as ‘minnow and chips’. Complete rip off for the price charged. Very disappointed and will not be visiting again.

After a 12km walk we fancied Fish n Chips. We were lucky to have found Dean’s Plaice open. Friendly welcoming staff & the fish n chips were absolutely cooked to perfection & large portion of chips alongside. Good cuppa too. Highly recommend. Thank you.
