Sunset Fish Bar in Canterbury

Felt the menu was overpriced for dining in compared to take away but decided to order anyway. Asked for Plaice without chips and were charged £16.50 each. When I queried this, was told you can’t change the menu options. And £3.50 for a few mushy peas, are you kidding me, they cost 45p a tin in Morrisons ! Well I can go elsewhere so won’t be coming back here again. Food was ok but grossly expensive.

I love being pleasantly surprised by a restaurant, and my meal at the Sunset Fish Bar was so much better than I was expecting. I chose the Skate and it was a great size with delicious batter. The chips whilst looking a little pale actually tasted lovely and the small side salad was well done. Service was quick and I really liked that they brought a basket of sauces at no extra charge. I would definitely eat here again and I will probably have the Skate again at it was so good.

I’m unsure if there are new owners because we’ve been in previous years and the food has been good. Stopped for a takeaway Sunday evening, waited 40 mins for it and the food was inedible. Ordered a kids nuggets & chips, 2 fishcakes and chips. Had to take fishcake back as it was so greasy it had disintegrated and was just like slop, staff member gave us 2 sausages instead - these were undercooked and also inedible but didn’t bother going back again. Toddler had one bite of an anaemic looking nugget, said yuck and wouldn’t eat them either. I can’t remember the last time I had such poor food. Wish I had read the recent reviews beforehand - please don’t waste your money here!

Wished id checked the reviews. So this chippy is in a prime location on the seafront. We were all hungry and this wasn’t overly busy so we stood and queued. 30 mins later still no food, others came and we t and they completely forgot about us. I asked the situation and the guy just shrugged his shoulders and walked off. I asked for a refund and magically our food was ready! It was luke warm and greasy - binned most of it - should have just got the refund. Will never eat here again. Hope they train their staff to communicate better and be mindful of orders.

Our first time eating here today in your Herne Bay branch, we had 3 Cod and Chips, all three were cooked perfectly - even came with a tasty salad! We ate outside using their outdoor seating. The service was fab and the prices were reasonable, highly recommended, we will definitely be back 👍

So honestly review. We sat down with 3 kids to adults and wanted to order. We had keep asking menu when finally given we place order. Half food show up and when we asked rest given wrong items. The fish for one adult undercook that batter was raw. When show someone they advise sorry we replace it. 15 mints had passed and no food we then given wrong food and had request correct one. On getting it the plate full oil . We pointed out waiter and was told ok and they walk off. Paid the bill in dispute customer service shocking

I was treated to lunch on Mother’s Day (30/03/25). In the past we’ve eaten at the outside part of this restaurant, situated near the pier. We arrived around 12:30 and were seated inside. We both had the same from the extensive menu of a ‘deluxe chicken wrap’ chicken, bacon, hash brown (it had cheese too, we had it without), served with chips and salad. The meal arrived within 15 minutes, piping hot. The table was being cleaned as we arrived, staff were polite and friendly. It was a good time to eat as when we were leaving there was an extensive queue. There’s an area at the front too, to purchase food to eat away from the restaurant.

My partners sausage was raw. Mine tasted awful and now I’ve had been ill since eating it. Not nice at all.

Went to Herne Bay for a drive out. We went for a walk along the pier, then decided to have fish and chips, on our laps. We got it from the sunset fish bar. It was £24.90, for 2 portions of cod and chips. We both can honestly say, it was the worst fish and chips, we have ever had. The chips were luke warm and rubbery, where they had probably been left covered for an hour or so. The fish was so small, soggy and was probably out of the freezer and left to defrost. The box the food was presented in, ended up with water in the bottom of it, this had drained out of the fish. Never again!!!!!!

Orderd a chicken deluxe burger, was asked with mayo? To which I replied no, as it says on the menu but with ketchup and was handed the burger with mayo, I said can I have ketchup please to which I was told no thats extra. Won't be comeing back.

I went for a day out in Herne bay and at the end of our otherwise great day we decided to get fish and chips. What a mistake! The chips were awful and cold. The cod was slimey and the batter was disgusting I would not recommend this place to anyone The food wasn’t even worth throwing to the sea gulls

We ate outside on the pavement tables. There were 9 of us seated over two tables. The food for the first table was lovely but they were finished before the second table's order came out, although we came together and ordered together. Their salads looked half eaten and some of the food was not well cooked. Staff seemed confused and they had lost half of the order. The service was poor. 😳😠 I would eat there again but as a takeaway not seated.

Poor customer service. Having chased 10 times for our food with no updates, we finally got our food 40 minutes after the rest of our party, minus one meal. When my husband went to enquire they were digging the ticket out of the bin! Food took almost an hour to arrive, the salads were served on dirty dishes and looked like left overs from someone else's meal. The food was ok but the distinct lack of care for their customers ruined the meal. When it came to paying, there was a mix up with the bills and ended up almost being charged for someone else's meal.

Really disappointed as we have always come here and loved the food but today the service was nonexistent and when the food finally came after a 45minute wait, it was cold and wrong. It was sent back 3 times before it was correct and when my partner went to eat it, it was cold. So disappointing. We decided to leave without eating due to this and we weren’t even offered an apology for the food being wrong or our wait. Not sure how they will cope with the busy period if they couldn’t cope today.

Visited today with friends. The fish and chips were incredible, not greasy, beautiful light batter and very fresh. Best fish and chips we’ve all had a long time ❤️ I would definitely recommend and we will be back

We enjoyed the presentation, with little fryer baskets containing chips and the beans and peas in little bowls. The team were very relaxed and helpful and even though we messed them round a little getting kids meals for adults, not really knowing what we wanted, they were patient and generous. The food tasted great. Prices were very reasonable. The only small negative was a lot of cold drinks on menu were not available.

Wow we went in for lunch and ordered our grandchildren sausage and chips they shared one meal between them the portion was really good, I had the fish and chips that was really nice, my wife had the mix seafood that was lovely, the staff are very friendly highly recommended.

We wanted a light dinner, so whilst our daughter ordered a meal of sausage and chips we ordered 2 portions of small chips! These portions were so huge that we could have shared 1 between the 3 of us. The prices were brilliant (especially considering a tourist location and on the sea front!). The venue was clean and staff lovely and couldn’t do enough for customers.

The food here was average but massively over priced for what we ordered. The fish and chips was probably reasonable but the child portion of chips was expensive. There’s outdoor seating but if you order at the hatch / counter, you must sit on one side of the outdoor area and not at the table service area which was cleaner and nicer. A great view over the pier and the beach and thankfully not too many seagulls around! Note they charge for ketchup which I think is petty at 20p per small packet!

Food was horrible chips dry and cold fish soggy and batter tasted horrid was not crispy at all it was soaked and squishy second time we have had rubbish food from this place will be taking my custom else where now very expensive for rubbish quality and horrible tasting food

Stopped in for a bite to eat, cannot fault the service, but thr food was terrible, dripping in oil, I do understand they fry but this was undercooked & actually dripping!!! Also over priced for quality or amount. £16 for fish n chips which was measured in a metal thing. Sorry will only be a coffee IF I return.

Visited this fish bar after a brief afternoon out in Herne Bay. We popped in after walking back to the car and thought that being on the beach, you need fish and chips! We sat inside the restaurant and honestly did not realise the seating area across the road which did appear to be pretty decent. As we entered we realised how cramped it was with approximately five tables next to the toilets and it was also quite dirty. Valid, a staff member came and wiped the table down, but there was still food on the floor and seats and it required us to go over everything with baby wipes. We ordered food straight away and it arrived around 16-20 minutes later and considering it’s all cooked in the fish shop and immediately served, it wasn’t at hot as i would of expected. Price wise - reasonable.. We ordered a fish and chips, a halloumi wrap and a kids sausage and chips with drinks and it came to £41 which i thought wasn’t too bad. The halloumi wrap was nice and the children’s meal came with two large sausages which was not too bad either. The staff were friendly however took considerable time to come and clear the table and see if we wanted to pay or not which meant i had to chase them up as i was waiting around.

The best fish and chips in Kent. Have not had any so good for a long time. Not the cheapest but the sheer quality of light golden chips and moist, flaky and fresh cod makes it worth every penny

After a nice sunny beach dip into the sea we wanted to go home as quickly as possible to change our wet clothes while we had our hands occupied with bags. We ordered 2 meals to go . And it was hardly 3 customers waiting before us and after we ordered there one 2 to 3 more customers who has been served before us and we kept on waiting almost 20 mins meanwhile customers ordered before us was surved and gone no one assued me why its getting delayed or atleast informed me about the possible delays.. I had to remind one of the waiter to go and have look what's going in . He looked like forget after a while but then eventually remembered and prepared our meal. The meal was served open boxed no bags and I asked a bag he bring a bag and left on the counter .. then I was trying to pack my own realised there are no chips in both the meals I asked of the meal comes with chips . The guy went back and asked and filled the boxes with chips .. again not helped with the boxes to close and bag remain for myself to pack .. didn't offer any sauce salt tissues or anything.. food tasted good but the service was awful . Hernbay is not busy beach and they had atleast 5 waiters working on the premises and 3 to4 person inside the kitchen I just don't see any reason for delays and negligence .. very poor service. We will not go there again..

Must be the worst food. I have had the displeasure to be served to me. I didn't eat it, I sent it back . Dirty cutlery Dirty glass, my shandy was in a pint glass but not full it was about an inch from full. I didn't pay for the food I wished I hadn't paid for the drink, not going back very poor service, food, and drink !! The salad was about 2 days old dry and limp, definitely not fresh

Well where do I start?????My wife and I came into SUNSET FISHBAR at Herne Bay and after waiting for 10 minutes then had the menus thrown on the table I knew we had made a mistake!A member of staff was picking his nose in the kitchen and another was wiping a table down with a dirty rag(didn't even spray the table with a cleaning solution.Most of the staff had B.O and the food was cold and tasteless. Guys Please give this place a VERY WIDE BIRTH.

I had Cod and Chips with my wife and children. The waitresses and waiters were so friendly. Food came out hot and fresh and kids enjoyed all their food. Definitely would recommend especially if your visiting Herne Bay. Extra nice as well seen as it’s right on the seafront!

Probably the most over priced worst fish and chips ever. The fish was dry served with the smallest portion of chips in a tiny basket.

Would not recommend at all. Very over priced for the portions you get. The kids meal had more chips than the adult meal. Cost £40 for 4 of us to eat basic meals. We had a wrap n chips, saveloy n chips, kids nuggets n chips and kids saveloy n chips and a can of coke for £40. Food was not great at all, chips under cooked, saveloy was over cooked. It made us all feel rubbish after eating the food. Not one of us finished the whole meal. I would strongly recommend staying away.

Visited yesterday with family we went to order from this bar and asked the young girl about certain foods as son has allergies the girl was very helpful enough what wasn’t helpful were staff were ignoring her when asking and what surprised me is when she returned she explained that the staff aren’t sure which I found shocking! How can you run a business/restaurant without knowing what you’re cooking or ingredients you’re using and potentially causing serious problems to somebody who has severe allergies Don’t recommend this place what’s so ever

I've been here several times before, on this occasions seem the management has changed. Things are just not the same. We sat outside, and the sun umbrellas need replacing. Service was a little lethargic. Food was disappointing for the price. Fish & chips on the menu seemed to take an age to arrive. Chips were anemic, the fish just didn't taste much. The chips and side salde came in little side buckets. This is a fish & chip shop. This place use to have queues out the door up the road. We can see why not on this day. It just seems the standards have slipped on quality. Shame

Awful food do not go here. The fish and chips were cold when delivered to the table. The chips had obviously been sitting around for a while. Thinnest curry sauce you have ever seen and not nice to taste. Mushy peas were also cold. Awful service would never go there again. Also very over priced.

OMG brought fish and chips the first lot were soggy they gave me a fresh cooked cod which I took home to eat and the stink from the fish made me Gag it was so bad. You Will Give People Food poisoning clean your act up thank god I didn’t eat any I would have ended up in hospital.

We wanted fish and chips but to pay £16 for haddock, left me getting a chicken burger which was extremely basic. A piece of chicken that was burnt and tiny with one piece of lettuce. No mayo or any type of sauce. They wouldn't let us sit on a big round table as there was a table with a wheelchair and they didn't want to walk around to get to the table.

Burger bun was rock hard, could have built a small house with it. Chips only looked at the oil rather than cooked in it. Salad big enough to feed a mouse was nice though. Staff seemed very blunt. Very pricey for what we got! Won’t be back.

So saturated in fat, dripping in oil, greasy, tasteless, we had one bite of the fish and couldn’t finish it. There are so many other nice fish and chips shops in Herne bay. I ate here for the first time because it’s on the beach and we were walking past but honestly don’t waste your time. Walk further and eat some proper fish and chips. If you want a decent portion served with a smile this is not the place to go. Portions were ridiculous, a large chips wasn’t even the size of a small at our usual chip shop and yet costs more. The server looked at us like we were an inconvenience, thudding her finger on the order screen, and when we eventually got our food and asked for some sauces, she may as well have beaten the box of sauces up while trying to get them out, and then proceeded to practically throw them at us. Awful service & over priced food.

Stopped at this fish bar yesterday with family for a takeaway, can honestly say I will not be returning, over priced fish and chips miserable staff, quality of food was not good enough over cooked greasy fish. Don't mind paying over the odds but for an enjoyable dinner, this fish bar needs to look at its presentation and quality, and encourage their staff to be a little more engaging and smile.

I love it here. I always sit outside which is adjacent to the beach. See my photo of their outside area. The main cafe/fish bar is just across the road and has inside seating if you prefer. They have a nice selection of both hot and cold drinks including some more unusual ones like the Dragon Fruit and Mango cooler. They sell alcohol including cocktails but their cocktails are also good. Traditional fish & chips is available along with other chip shop favourites but you can also get various wraps,burgers and salads. Breakfast is also served until 12pm There is a kids menu and portions are generous. There are vegetarian options and one or two items for vegans. You get table service outside and I find the staff very pleasant. Lovely to stay a while and drink a cocktail as you watch the sun set

A very strange experience, so we did not order food in the end. The staff at the takeaway seemed totally confused and unresponsive, not friendly at all, and only told us after we had placed our order that we could not sit at the tables, unless a waiter took our order. The whole thing was confusing, so we left this chaos and went somewhere else.

Situated in a prime location next to the pier, the salad is the only saving grace of this place - which was quite well flavoured. The chips were soggy, the tartare sauce had a weird aftertaste and the battered fish was not hot, did not taste fresh at all. Not worth the visit if you’re interested in a good plate of fish and chips. Service was ok.

Mediocre, heated up frozen food, (possibly from Iceland) Had better food at half the price. No takeaway wraps available, but apparently, they will serve you a wrap if you sit at the table at twice the price of a takeaway, and food arrived luke warm. And they fail to inform you of the price difference, until it is time to pay. Sneaky, VERY sneaky. £20+ for two luke warm chicken wraps, with a side of frozen shrivelled chips, but apparently, takeaway wraps are not available. Work that one out! In summary, poor reheated food. Staff that did not seem to know know what was available for takeaway, and was actually told that I couldn't have a certain item to take away, but COULD have the same item if I sit at a table, confusion over pricing, and was charged DOUBLE the takeaway price for table service. VERY disappointed, and feel cheated. So Needless to say, I will not be going back, and would advise others to avoid this place. I've had better experiences at McDonald's, and that is no exaggeration. Edit, July 2024. Three years on from my original review, and I haven't been back, thankfully. But reading more recent reviews, DESPITE the owners seemingly EMPTY promises to make improvements, this DIVE has failed to make any significant improvements at all. Still people complaining about the inconsistencies relating to food quality, waiting time, presentation, and portion sizes in comparison to prices charged. And STILL complaints about the DIRE customer service. The owners of this place are CLEARLY IGNORANT, and have failed to address the problems raised. The only consistency about this place, are the inconsistencies! Take a packed lunch, or a picnic if visiting Herne Bay, because you may live to regret visiting this Mediiocre establishment.

Bought a bag of chips to eat whilst.we wander down the pier. Hands down worst chips we've ever had. Barely lukewarm, stale like they've been sat there for hours.

Food wasn't very hot and hot drinks were warm too. A bit disappointed as it used to be very nice but new owners now. It's gone a bit down hill if I'm honest.

Unfortunately this was a totally different experience from the last time came here, customer service was fine, they are very friendly and price wise whilst I feel a little expensive it's pretty average compared to others I guess. Unfortunately on this occasion the food certainly didn't match the price, fishcake burnt to point bottom was black for at least 7/8 of the surface craftily placed burnt side down in box, chips whilst portion size was ok were not even close in standard to my local chippie. Will say 1st time came here good was much better so possibly just bad day at the office

Did anyone visit this place on this Saturday and try their Efes ? Look and tasted like the never clean those beer lines absolutely disappointed Don’t get EFES DRAFT I never finished my pins just throw it in the bin so horrible people can die 💀 the food wasn’t great aswell chis smells like burned oil probably never changed oil 🤷🏻

Not impressed me and my whole family have food poisoning from this place.

I used to love coming here as the chips were always so good! But today wasn't so great, the food came out really quick with the chips looking anaemic. They tasted like fish and the battered sausage didn't really taste of anything other than grease. Both of us felt a bit iffy afterwards. Won't be rushing back there in a hurry.

Very small portions for the high price. Young Staff need training on their customer service. No smiles no interaction. Other fish and chip shops are very generous with their chip portions.

Worse restaurant for potion size meals asked waiter if I had a child’s potion it was so small , no knifes and forks and table, daughter bit into sausage wasn’t cooked, this meal for 2 adults and two children would have cost us nearly £50 and we didn’t even have fish . As for the salad well what can I say you would have eaten it in 2 forkfuls it was that small

Love their fish and chips, but they are just so disorganised and not willing to put themselves out. No wooden forks and they didn't go looking for any, just shuffled in box on countertype all dumb looking and didn't offer a solution, I had to repeatedly ask if we could have real fork from dine in area, that I had to go and get. No napkins. They served us part of our order to then realise they didn't have enough pieces of fish to complete it, so asked the fryers to put another cod on to fry, so part or order getting cold while fresh fish cooked to complete our order. Whilst waiting similar happening to other customers. Servers were blaming the guys frying saying not doing the orders right, but while we waited the servers were dishing out fish to customers that had ordered after us, so just totally not organised. We waited for over 45 mins. Bad bad service, but good food, shame.

Fish wasn't fresh and looked frozen was water and battery greasy. Chios pale and could do with cooking longer. No peas only mushy offered and soggy wet side salad which doesn't go with fish and chips to be honest. The one looked like a flat version of a pukka pie and told comes with gravy we never got it even after telling staff. Overall service was poor two lads doing one job and was polite but not listening well. Over all was dissapointed amd won't be going back sorry.

I would avoid this place, it's very expensive with such tiny portions, I ordered a large chips and I honestly thought they gave me a small portion. I even questioned it and they said they would add a few more on, but it was so small still that my 6 year old finished it all on his own. In reality it's a rip off. You are better off walking a little further and finding somewhere better.

Trading on location really. We sat outside which was nice. My wife’s food came out quickly enough but her chips are almost cold. Mine then came out 10 minutes later, the chips were also barely warm and the burger was the cheap stuff you get at fairgrounds. £37 for two meals and three drinks, I wouldn’t bother going back.

My girlfriend and i came here for a quick dinner last night,before visiting the pier ceylon club down the road.from the moment we walked in,we were greeted with a warm and friendly service.the decor is quirky and inviting and we immediately felt comfortable.I love that the menu is uncomplicated,lovely meal.excellent exceptionally friendly and polite staff.all of the food was delicious and fresh. Thanks for a lovely evening. I think we've found our favourite fish bar.

We went in and the restaurant was busy but there was a table free. We ordered our food but the waiter didn’t understand English and didn’t know the menu. My partner kept asking for cod and he kept saying “cod bites”? I had to physically point to cod on the menu and even then it took a conversation with the manager to confirm what we wanted. My daughter ordered a jumbo battered sausage and got 2 normal pork sausages. There was no salt on the table or even enough cutlery we had to ask for both after our food was delivered. My haddock and my partners cod were identical, they were mushy ant tasteless. I’m going to assume it’s under new management now as it’s completely different from anything we’ve ever had in the past. I didn’t complain as we were so disappointed we just left as we weren’t confident our complaint would even be remedied. This has always been our go to for food when visiting Herne bay but unless it’s just a bag of chips we won’t be returning anytime soon.

Food served awful, sausages fatty and full of oil, most chips are undercooked, food took ages to come out and staff eating whilst serving people, cod bites awful, waste of money!

Friendly staff, couldn’t fault them! Food didn’t taste nice. Old, oily and bland. Shame as location is great!

Came here a couple of weeks ago, and the food was all well and fine, but the staff are just so unorganised, I'm sorry to be blunt but it's truth, the staff couldn't understand what customers were saying no matter how simple or properly they spoke, and as a result they kept messing peoples orders up, losing track of who ordered what food, and food would get cold very quickly. We were waiting for what felt like nearly an hour due to the staff taking forever to give people their correct food.

Nice and clean, with one of the best aspects for the outdoor seated area. Decent portions. Attentive service. Drinks all nice and cold. Recommended

The chips tasted incredibly fresh, they were fluffy inside and the vinegar used was delightfully tangy and light. Exceptional chips.

Overall underwhelming. Service wasn’t able to manage a larger group and resulted in a few cold items and incorrect meals. All sorted without a fuss, which was welcomed. Expensive full meals (fish and chips and mushy peas = £19.50) which was the same size as a child’s meal (£8).
