Marino's Fish Bar in Canterbury

Scrum diddly umptious! Cheesy chips, halloumi and mayonnaise - yes please! The staff were friendly and sorted my order quickly.

Stopped in last week for fish and chips. Service was excellent. All the ladies working were extremely friendly and efficient, the service was quick and I felt very welcome. The fish was amazing. Perfectly cooked and a large solid fillet, not greasy at all. Chips were great and a very healthy portion to boot. In addition, my northern Mum gave the mushy peas high praise (in her terms) by saying “They weren’t bad for the south”. All around a great experience, will definitely be back. 10/10.

A late dinner after watching the football in a pub across the road from this establishment. Marinos was once one of the better fish and chip shops. But now, the price of chips has put me off. See photos. Daylight robbery, or in this instance, night light robbery. £3.20 FOR A SMALL PORTION OF CHIPS!!!! That's more expensive than some of the other items on the menu. And. The chips were a little soggy at best. Complete rip off.

Popped in for chips, first time here. 2 other customers seated waiting. 3 staff behind counter. I was asked if I wanted fish. Said no thanks, I ordered medium chips. Was offered a small portion and said it wasn't enough. Asked to upgrade to large. Now £5.40. Wasn't offered salt n vinegar. Had to ask for that. Shared with my son virtually straight after leaving and the chips were pretty cold. Sorry guys. Need to sell hot chips, especially at that price. I was happy to wait if needed.

Reasonable pricing, huge portions and Everything dine nicely in front of you

First time visit for lunch today. Got 'small' chips and scampi, plus 2 drinks. Both chips and scampi were yummy 👌👍😋 !!!

I highly recommend this shop to other tourists. Marino's Fish Bar gave me the best fish and chips and ate it on the river side was one of the best moments of this trip!

Went here and asked do you still do mushy pea fritters, given a blank and rude no, said you once did again a rude comment. Asked if they sold their food in polystyrene trays and again a blunt rude reply. Why is any chip shop selling food in polystyrene trays that take millennials to rot down. Would not go back

Popped in adhoc on the way to Canterbury West. Wish I hadn't bothered! Made a simple enquiry as to sausage sizes and was barked at 'we only have one size' literally could be bothered to ask further questions and left immediately. Maybe if they spent less time on their social media and more time giving a damn then I'm confident your footfall would increase. No desire to return.

This used to be the best fish and chip takeaway in town and now it’s the worst. It’s been utterly ruined by prioritising Uber Eats and Deliveroo over walk in customers and those placing orders by phone, which is pointless as they only queue your phone order when you walk in! On my last visit it was pandemonium, with delivery drivers arguing with staff as customers’ orders were neglected, abandoned and forgotten. What is the point of phoning your order, arriving, repeating it and then waiting 40 minutes because it’s now queued behind a dozen food delivery orders.? Never again.

The haddock and chips was lovely and the lady that severd us was very polite and cheerful 😊

Had it with pleased experience. It was a sunny day near the noon, and I was the only customer at that time. The staff did the fish and chips on the spot which surprised me, but with satisfying service. I would describe it is a pleasant experience, oh I said it at the beginning. The fish is just like what it has to be, and when you have it, you know it’s what fresh like. I would say it’ll be good if I can have it at the beach side, it’s a little shame that it runs in the city(not anyone’s fault, to be fair).

Moved to the area a few months ago and would prefer going to marinos as in walking distance. First time I went on a Friday and boxed it straight away from the hot shelf... Batter was very oily and cod had no chunky white hold . It was similar this time , batter oily and cod bland and watery... I don't like to be critical, just constructive as I would like to try one more time . Please don't offer any freebies as I can appreciate how hard it is with running costs just want to enjoy my fish and chips... Just don't want to drive elsewher and will give another go without a further review regards Jason

I ordered large cod and it came very large. Chicken strips also taste good but I would strongly recommend the calamari. It was the best calamari I've ever had. Delicious food with good prices! (Btw, no dips given with any dishes so you have to extra pay for it)

Small battered sausage and chips with a coke came to 7 quid. Sausage nice, chips bland and barely any for the price. Won’t return here.

ordered large chips and almost half of the chips were really hard (like wood chips) and inedible despite being told they were freshly made. it was like they scraped all the remnants from the bottom of the fryer. i might’ve as well have ordered a small or medium. disappointing as i was recommended by a friend. long wait times in store as they prioritise delivery orders. they charge extra for any sauce and the price of chips is also really high for a traditional chippy which i didn’t mind if they delivered on quality but they clearly didn’t. a massive let down.

Plaice’d ordered to be told it would be a few mins. Waited 20 mins for all the delivery drivers to get their orders cooked(Seemed to be the priority). Finally got my cod, batter was over cooked, fish was over cooked so much it had boiled to mush and reduced by 50% mass. I’m guessing the oil was far too hot and the man manning the fryer was in a rush to get all the deliveries cooked. Quite disappointing considering Adam the old guy who ran it in the nineties would never have served that or let it out the door. Not been in for food in 20years. Probably be another 20 now:-(((

Incredibly high-quality food. I've always felt satisfied after eating from Marino's. The only sad part is when the food is gone and I can't continue to enjoy it. Can't go wrong with any of the fish, and a large chips is a great way to get your order to last a couple of meals. I also have a major soft spot for the battered halloumi. Top-notch kindness in the service, too. One time, I ordered from the wrong Marino's (there is more than one in Canterbury, and the other one would have been a slog to get to walking). Even though this was my own mistake and I would have been happy to pay again, they did my order at no extra charge. I don't quite know how to repay that kindness, but am eternally grateful.

Facebook and Google confirmed chip shop was.open so we decided to take a detour as we often travel to this shop specifically even though we live out of area. Disappointed to see a note on the door when we arrived that the shop was closed for several days without updating opening hours online. Hence a wasted trip from Herne Bay, three upset children, two frustrated parents and a pooch that was looking forward to a battered sausage having to make a last minute change of plan because the opening hours advertised on the internet were incorrect. A shame as we always travel to this shop specifically from outside the immediate area. Very disappointed.

Been going here for a few years now, and especially the last few weeks. I recently ordered a medium cod and chips from marinos, the portion size and taste was fantastic best fish and chips I've had in ages. The kind, friendly young lady behind the counter said to me "sorry for the wait, we've gave you a little bit extra fish because we kept you waiting". In all honesty I was only waiting between 5-10 minutes I didn't mind waiting for a fresh fish to be cooked nethertheless top notch customer service and top notch food. I will 100% be returning.

Fantastic service and great food

We tried to phone an order through as usual, but met a answerphone saying their were busy. We went there and placed the order as follows 3 burgers, 2 large chips, 2 saveloys The chips were hard and crispy, not over cooked but had an unusaual smell to them, i suspect a cheaper potato used. The beef patti 's were raw as in the image attached, with this one being the worst. The saveloys were not properly cooked either and were another cheaper variety. Overall our £26 was wasted with this mess. I tried to call them to complain, but got the answerphone. They are to be avoided imo and food should be checked in the shop before paying up as you cannot call them to complain.

The staff are really lovely, but they are struggling with the "new" normal, i.e. the constant orders coming in from deliveroo etc and the loyal walk in customers who, like I did today, have to wait fifteen minutes for a bag of chips, a cheeseburger and a saveloy. As a result of the waiting time, my taxi fare was increased by £1.50. As much as I prefer to support local businesses, I won't be going to Marino's again.

Twice the order we put in has been packed short requiring return. Each time order repeated back but couldn’t manage to put the full order in the bag Once a mistake. Twice just useless Never to return again

Absolutely rubbish. Twice I’ve ordered and when home the order has been short. They weren’t even busy. Never again. Leaving girls in charge is this cheap labour at a cost.

Went in there this morning shouldn't have bothered. No queue yet sold us two portions of soggy underdone chips. Forget crispiness we'd have just settled for not raw in the middle. Also ordered battered sausages - very thin batter, no flavour, and sausages had nasty hard bone bits inside them. If a chip shop can't cook chips and batter particularly when it's quiet they shouldn't be operating in the first place.

Worst fish ever had from a chippy. Fish was dry and flavourless fish as crispy as the batter .and much to greasy.wont be going there again. fish was huss or as they called it rock.

Being a big lover of fish and chips I have tried them almost everywhere in Kent .but know this is the only place I will go everything is cooked to perfection with a amazing taste .and to top it off lovely helpfull and friendly staff I cant recommend it highly enough

The best fish and chips I've ever had, and the service to match! Great experience from start to finish, friendly staff and fantastic food. An absolute must try! I highly recommend the battered halloumi as a side with the fish of your choice and the best chips you'll ever eat.

This is the first takeaway we’ve had in 8 weeks, service was excellent, social distancing observed throughout, the staff were all lovely as always & the food was amazing. I lived in Canterbury during my erasmus studies and fortunately, my flat was a few steps from the Marino Fish Bar. A few days ago I came back with my family after 5 years and we had lunch there, it was still just as good, the fish is very well cooked and excellent, we are offered a very good portion of fries. I highly recommend if you are visiting Canterbury, a traditional fish & chips, very fresh, service generally quick and very friendly.

Chips are either great or awful, doesn't seem to be any between area fish are rather small given the excessive price.

I have to say the Fish was perfect but the chips were bad really greasy and a bit hard considering how expensive the place is you would expect a decent chip.

Marino's Fish Bar is one of the best fish shops in Canterbury. Local fish and chips in the St Dunstan's area, very traditional feel to the shop, limited parking so much easier to access if you are on foot. Service generally quick and friendly. Eggcellent pickled eggs!

Returned here a couple of times since my last review and I am pleased to say the food was delicious. These were weekend visits and the fish was vastly improved on my previous experiences.
