Wheelers Bakery in Portsmouth

Upon entering the bakery we were met with an immediate warning about the wet floor by a polite member of staff, as well as a very disgruntled look from another. It was 14:30 and the business ceases to operate at 15:00 so it may have paid to mop the floor a little later but I digress. There was only half a crusty French stick left fresh so me and my friend said perfect we can have half each. Unfortunately it wasn’t that easy. The rude lady of the two staff members, said it was impossible to cut in half and fill with two different fillings due to pricing. So we could purchase it but had to be the same filling. I tried to explain that perhaps she could just charge us entirely for one half stick with one filling but the more expensive of the two fillings, essentially that way only we would lose out. This sparked panic in the ladies eyes. And I had to use the phrase “I’ll pay out the ears if you could just manage it please”. Which she did eventually. Baguette wasn’t worth the hassle, and I couldn’t for the life of me work out why she’d rather throw the whole thing away than sell it after cutting it in half but there we go! Perhaps some training is on order, failing that use of common sense. Would return as it was a laugh all in all

I use this bakery at least twice a week I have always entertained it. I always take friends staff & family here. Staff are not as friendly as I would hoped but can live with that it hit and Miss good one days & horribly the next if you get my drift Today I went in and my roll I order was hard and horrible tasting very disappointed I would like to say it was a great be of however the last visit was exactly the same. Hence my review. I use to enjoy food here but don’t think I’ll entertain it anymore. My average spend is £15/£25 each visit. Shame. All good things come to a end I suppose.

This is a bakery that offers takeaway and delivery services. Their food is delicious and always as fresh as can be. The premises is normally immaculate and staff are friendly. We’ve used this bakery for 30Years and have never found another in or around portsmouth as good. Once visited you will go back again and again.

Lovely to have a traditional bakery and the cake selection is fantastic and very reasonably priced. What I don’t understand is the pricing. Why is a plaited roll nearly a pound more than other breads with the same filling. This is even more puzzling as the plotted roll have less capacity to fill than other bread products. In fairness to Wheelers their menu states that they use margarine rather than butter. I absolutely appreciate the cost difference but it’s such a shame that the roll had an overwhelming margarine taste.

I use the bakery quite a lot. Today Saturday I went to pick up rolls and cakes. I was second in the queue out side the shop. Yes it's great your doing Uber orders but please have more staff working. I waited for at least 12 minutes, while one person was doing the orders for Uber then the person in the shop wanted orders as well. It seemed that only one person was making up the orders. A couple of people walked away while I was waiting. By the time the Uber man collected his orders there was at least 12 people waiting at outside shop.

We have ordered multiple rolls and each time they are amazing! Delivery via Uber has always turned up on time and never had any issues with the order! Will be ordering again very soon!

Not sure what’s happened today but I don t think this portrays what is shown on their facebook website as this was a tuna salad roll today. Women who served was miserable & sulky and I will not ever return after many years.

The food here is excellent but the staff just seem unhelpful and not very friendly. Who says the customer is always right? 🙂

Food tasted ok. Women grumpy. A smile and a thank you goes a long way.... Had tummy ache next day. Will not return!

Wheelers siempre ha establecido un alto nivel de suministro de pasteles y debido al reciente cierre de mi fuente más cercana de pasteles de crema fresca, he comprado en Wheelers o Greggs. Sin embargo, recientemente por el mismo precio, los Wheelers han reducido considerablemente el tamaño de sus pasteles de crema por el mismo precio. La calidad sigue ahí, pero esto me está haciendo reconsiderar.

Visité varias veces, ya que la comida en general es realmente buena, pero debido al terrible servicio de una señora que está llena de actitud, no volveré a usar esta panadería, la joven que trabaja aquí siempre es amable y educada, pero desafortunadamente la actitud del otro personal es repugnante.

Stopped on off chance to get lunch , lady who served me had just served someone else and handled money when she picked up my roll and began filling it with her bare hands , no tongs or gloves and no handwashing ! She finished my roll put it in a bag and then pushed her hair off her face and took my money before serving next person . Went out the shop and put roll in the bin YUK YUK YUK ! Please whoever owns this place give your ladies a lesson in food prep and hygiene , you need tongs and gloves and use one person to take the money .

Visited wheelers in london road portsmouth to buy my lunch and I was discusted to see the girl who served me had just finished serving someone and had handled money and without washing her hands or even wearing gloves made my roll,then ran her hands through her hair and picked up a cake I wanted that may I add was stale !!.I could not eat my roll I put it in the bin ,very bad hygiene practice will never go there again ..

Young girl served me, used hands to package up all items, then took my cash, and then served next client without washing them. Basic hygiene rules say you do not handle cash and food together

I always come here when in Portsmouth and the atmosphere seems unchanged in 30+ years. A small, friendly, very clean local bakery. The granary bread is excellent, the cream cakes are like going back in time, really indulgent. Anything I've had from there has been good though- it never disappoints. Worth stopping off to buy bakery items instead of the supermarket

Dropped in to grab something for late lunch and it was convenience on the way somewhere close by. There was a convenience store next to it but wanted to have some hot pasty. It was mid afternoon but there were full of food available...no good customer service though! Looked unhappy lady served us with no smile or greeting (lol). A doorstep sandwich with Turkey slice (ham) with salad £2.90 had no flavour at all - at least it looked handmade. Steak slice £1.85 was heated by microwave "warm" also had no flavour. Regret to shop there to be honest.
