Called into The Wheatsheaf on the spur of the moment. Three of us all enjoyed our lunch. Served by Donna who was very personable attentive and helpful. Only downside is that a couple of items on the menu were unavailable.

Very pleasant staff - served by Jude. Food was as described and a good all round experience Staying overnight so further review to follow

My friend and I have never experienced such a beautiful welcome from the waitress staff and when we asked the hotel staff for advice they were outstanding, a huge thank you to Lydia and julie , you were so helpful

Nice place to stop off for a spot of lunch, Lydia-mae our waitress was very helpful and polite. Ample parking and nice atmosphere.

Stayed here for a night in August 2024 alongside eating and drinking in the pub. The staff were lovely; friendly, helpful and hardworking. It was great to see how a good team they were by how they interacted with each other. Lydia and Jess were amazing! This is a 400 year old coaching inn, so please keep in mind that you will be staying in a historic building. The downside to this was poor air conditioning throughout the pub and in our hotel room. Our room was below the attic and was really hot and humid even with the fan on all night. Our room was a tad tired and in need of renovation. Beware that room number 26 is lopsided due to being just below the attic.

Very disappointed. Went for Sunday Roast, prebooked, took our order then run out of white meat. Sunday menu very limited therefore unable to all order so had to leave. Suggest you look how many have booked and manage your food better!

Went for dinner l. Excellent service as usual Manager lizzie was friendly and attentive as usual. Drinks were served by lydia quickly. The food was lovely as usual. Would recommend to friends and family.

Have stayed here a few times now while in the area for work and will come back. It's always clean, good rooms, fair value and great service so very happy. Have also eaten here a couple of times and good menu and food.

We ate here last night. The food was fantastic as always but the service was really disappointing. We eat here quite often and have done for many years but last night we felt let down by poor service. Our waitress was stroppy and the service was extremely slow. We ordered our food and drinks at the same time along with a jug of water. The drinks arrived quickly minus the water but it was 40 minutes later before my starter arrived and as my husband wasn't having a starter it was an hour before he got anything to eat. When we asked the waitress if we could have our water it was brought to us and slammed onto the table before the waitress stormed off. By the time our dessert arrived we'd been in the restaurant for almost 2 hours and we waited so long for our bill we gave up and went and asked another staff member for it as our waitress by then seemed to have disappeared. We got our bill but still no sign of the waitress so once again we found another member of staff, we paid our bill and we left. Such a shame because we love this restaurant and the food is fantastic but the service was a real let down this time.

We arrived on Sunday afternoon to be met by jess who was helpful from the start , we booked a disabled room what was lovely apart from it was a shower in a bath , in stepped andy the assistant manager who came up with a great master plan that worked a treat . The food was amazing we ate there every day of stay . A a big thanks to jude for his great service on our last night See you guys in a couple of months

Another visit with my family. As usual looked after by the lovely Donna who keeps us coming back here time after time. Food was lovely, service excellent. Donna has been there for many years and looks after every customer so well, nothing too much trouble and always a smile and warm welcome. She is your greatest asset!!

Following Mum's funeral at the crematorium just up the road, I had booked a funeral wake here and the buffet food selection I chose from a list was fantastic. The food was presented very well and endless tea and coffee available. Everyone said the food was delicious. The staff were lovely. They left us alone but were always helpful and there if we needed them. It was a perfect. Would highly recommend this place if you need to book a funeral wake. Thank you Julie and your team.

Birthday lunch on a Sunday. Food was lovely and piping hot. Two of us had roast beef dinner and had so much beef we asked for a container to take some home. Other two had veggie wellington which was delicious. The service is impeccable. Friendly staff who are on hand and happy to help. Thank you to Lydia who was our brilliant server. See you again soo.

Chose here for my dads 80th birthday family lunch and it was lovely they met all our expectation and more the service was fab and the food was amazing and piping hot ! will deffo be going back for our family meals and mum said they also do an amazing sunday lunch so will give that a go also thank you for making my dads birthday amazing the two ladies that served us were super

Excellent meal, though the caramelised chutney appeared as some kind of creamy butter in a dish alongside the herb butter. Not sure what happened there. Would have been better with the chutney. Otherwise all the food was excellent, Sophie was friendly and efficient so a great evening

I can only review the food as I have not stayed in the rooms. For Sunday roast, this is the place to go! For the past few years, I have been visiting The Wheatsheaf Hotel and the Hatch pub in Basingstoke for Sunday lunch. As both are Chef and Brewer, the food offered has been almost the same, which is in my opinion the best Sunday roast I have ever had, which ever establishment you visit. Unfortunately, I visited the Hatch recently only to discover the menu had changed, with the Sunday roast now offered at 50% price increase and a distinct reduction in food choice and far smaller portions with less items on the plate! I understand this was a decision made by Chef and Brewer, and am told it was in an attempt to make the Hatch more boutique. What a load of rubbish!. Why does some company executive think its a good idea to change something that is already 100% perfect?? I can understand a price increase as we live in expensive times, but a price increase AND a full change of menu where the choice is altered for the worse, and portion sizes reduced is simply too much. I can only hope the same decision to change the menu will not also happen at the Wheatsheaf! Please keep the Wheatsheaf as it is. The food is great, the atmosphere is great and the service brilliant. I was served by Lydia today who was really good and looked after us well. Ultimately though, the food is the reason for my visits. I do not need boutique. I need decent food which is wonderful quality, and decent value. I no longer go the Hatch for Sunday roast, so The Wheatsheaf is now my choice. I hope that will continue :)

Good place to stay, quiet and peaceful, clean and tidy. Mattress firmness varies across rooms so if sensitive to the rock hard or super soft, call ahead and ask. Dinner was excellent bar one niggle that the carrots were a bit on the cold side. Cooked breakfast is tasty with better quality sausages than many similar establishments. The staff are excellent. Friendly, approachable and knowledgable. Great customer service all round

Just had dinner here. The food was absolutely amazing. The pulled chicken croquettes from the specials menu were absolutely delicious. I would love to see these on the main menu. The pork belly was just wonderful. Beautifully cooked and well presented. Our waitress Sophie was just lovely and kept smiling and stayed completely professional despite how rude the people sat at the table behind us were to her. They complained non stop but as soon as the manager came to their table they were lovely to him. Sophie couldn't have been nicer. She was friendly and polite and we thoroughly enjoyed our evening. Can't wait to come back. More croquettes please.

Wonderful food without a timely wait! The restaurant/bar is beautiful and our waiters/waitresses were super friendly. Shout out to Lottie for being especially accomodating to our mother!

The rooms are about what you’d expect at this price point, clean and functional but a bit tired. But the service and hospitality were first class. Andy, the guy who looked after us at the hotel, was efficient, polite and extremely helpful. We arrived after the restaurant stopped serving food and he arranged pie and mash for us.

Donna was lovely, both arranging Mums wake in the function room, and after we had the internment and a nice lunch. Food was really good and not expensive. Nice relaxed venue. Recommended for wake or a nice pub meal.

Fantastic Sunday lunch on our return journey home. We both had the Trio roast and could not fault it. Way better than we expected from a chain pub. Brilliant food, good location just off the A303/M3 and lovely service from Amber. Well done and thanks

There were 7 of us and we were on a nice table out of the way. Our waitress Lottie was attentive, the service was good, and all the meals were excellent. It was a very relaxed family gathering and the ambience and service contributed greatly to make it a very nice family event

I recently attended the Wheatsheaf with a large group of my dog club members for our Christmas do. We were met by the assistant manager Andy and his team who made us feel so incredibly welcome and their level of service was second to none. The food was fantastic and the setting very comfy and cosy. A fabulous night was had by all. Thank you Andy and your crew for making us feel so welcome.

I visited with a work colleague in November, and although the service was great. The food was not the best. However as this is usually my restaurant of choice when I’m in the area, I decided to come back again in December. Unfortunately it was even more of a let down, I tried the 2 course Festive Menu and the roast turkey dinner was just subpar to say the least. I hoped the Xmas pudding would redeem this but I was greeted with a thin, uninviting slab. Which didn’t seem good value for money considering it’s £27… My colleague had chicken strips which were overcooked, hard and dry due to a lack of sauce and a burger with cold fries. In my previous visits the food was great but if this is the new standard of quality, I don’t think I will be choosing this restaurant any longer.

Menu with lots of choice and good prices. Service from Andy was absolutely superb. He was always attentive and showed great personable skills. His service combined with great, generously portioned and quickly served food made for a very enjoyable afternoon.

Fab little pub, stopped off on the way to the airport. They squeezed us in even though very busy so thank you Sophie for being super accommodating. Our hostess Jess was super attentive & very friendly. The service was quick & the food & drinks good quality I would highly recommend the roast. Next time we fly we will most definitely stop here again. Well priced & super atmosphere.

Fantastic, on the way to the airport to fly home. To Jordan, the restaurant was fully booked but Sophie found is a seat. Meals came quickly and very nice. Service by Jess was fantastic- a flying visit but will definitely pass by next we are home in the UK. 100%

My neice and I took her 3 year old for breakfast with santa. Fantastic atmosphere. Beautifully decorated. Santa siting by a roaring fire. He was wonderfully dressed, so friendly and accommodating. We had a warm greeting by jess and the manager. Our waitress was alicia who was very friendly and professional. She was so good with my great neice and supper accommodating with her gluten free mum. Food and drink was fantastic. Excellent service

Always a pleasure staying at this hotel, all the staff are amazing, some staff have been here for years and they still work so hard to run a great hotel and restaurant! Always my first choice to eat and sleep in Basingstoke so I would certainly recommend this place! Thanks to Lizzie and Dotty for making tonight a memorable one😊😊

We had a decent meal but unfortunately one out of our party of three had their order forgotten. Fortunately Andy came to the rescue and fast tracked our missing meal. Not ideal but mistakes can happen.

The staff were all attentive and very helpful. The steak ordered was perfectly cooked and both meals were very good. Happy with everything and will be going back soon.

We were looked after by Sophie and the service was top notch. Food was excellent and the staff and Sophie were lovely as usual. Sophie really looked after us and even laughed at a few of my jokes, always a bonus.

What a lovely meal and fantastic service! We had a table booked for 8.30 but ended up late, they made an effort to keep our table and the kitchen staff kept the kitchen open for us, we were so impressed with the kindness, the fantastic food and service. The assistant manager was so good with the kids, because of this they enjoyed the meal, no technology or saying they were bored. He made conversation with us adults as well and we had a few laughs with him, he was a lovely man and made us feel very welcome and relaxed. The atmosphere was warm and relaxing. We really enjoyed our meal here. Thank you to the staff, particularly the kitchen staff for keeping the kitchen open and for such good food and thank you to the assistant manager for making our experience such a good one. We will be back!

The decor and ambience is truly superb. Absolutely Christmas personified. We had booked for a small family party for Christmas Eve so we tried the Festive Menu of Roast Turkey with all the trimmings. We could not eat it. Such a huge disappointment. The turkey was tasteless and had a strange, unpleasant consistency The potatoes were hardly roasted at all, as was everything else, supposedly "roasted" The "Pig in blanket" was horrible - a full sized "sausage" which was awful There was a Yorkshire pudding which was limp, floppy and inedible, as was the stuffing. I honestly do not know how such bad food can be served in such a wonderful environment. We left all of it. I have now, reluctantly cancelled my Christmas eve booking (they can keep the deposit) Bad vibes all round. Come on Green King - this cannot be right.

We went there for my husband’s 70 th birthday celebration 18 family members in our group, we were so pleased with the service we received, the food was brilliant and the meals all came together. The manager was Andy who took care of us all during the evening making sure we had everything we needed in a very friendly and professional way .Thoroughly recommend the wheatsheaf north Waltham Basingstoke .

I've eaten in this establishment many times, never had a bad meal yet, and always very reasonably priced, no waiting ages for your food to arrive. Service is always superb! Can't fault anything... definitely got my thumbs up 👍

We eat here quite often and it was lovely to be back and see the same friendly faces in particular our waitress Tasha. Food was beautifully cooked with generous portions. Asked for extra bread for my pate starter which arrived quickly. Nothing was too much trouble. It was so nice to feel normal again having not been able to go out for so long. We were made to feel really welcome and safe with lots of good covid measures in place. Tables were well spaced out and staff wore masks as did the customers unless they were seated. A really lovely evening with great food and great service. Welcome back guys. Thank you for a great night out. Can't wait to see you again soon.

Fantastic Saturday night meal as always, great service from Charlotte who was very attentive and friendly, and also from Kate who got us everything we needed. Lovely starters and main courses! Very clean and great COVID measures in place, we felt very safe.

Had and amazing meal with the family after booking and short notice Abbey was more than happy to get us a table, we were met by Charlotte at the door who then handed us over to Kate and marrisa who were our waitresses that evening.Will be back in the new year.

Had a fantastic lunch was greeted by Alicia who explained all the new COVID rules and regulations to us and showed us too our table, we were then served by Callum who was lovely and chatty and made us feel very welcome food was cooked by Dotty and was amazing couldn’t fault anything lovely friendly place to eat will definitely be returning.

We had a lovely evening at The Wheatsheaf, it felt very Covid secure and yet relaxed and welcoming. The food was delicious, and all the staff were very friendly and helpful, especially Hannah, Jess and Eddie. This is one of our favourite places to eat as it never disappoints and we can’t wait to return.

Had a lovely meal out with my girlfriend as a post-lockdown treat. We shared the Camembert for starters before she had the mussels and I had a fillet steak for my main. It was all perfectly cooked and I’d definitely recommend. Such a delicious treat and so nice not to worry about the washing up. I had felt a bit worried about the COVID situation but reading reviews on here and speaking to friends who have been for dinner at the Wheatsheaf was really reassuring. You’re welcomed by someone who goes over the rules, making you feel safe and our lovely waitress Tasha was there to answer any questions we had with a smile and a sense of humour. We have just returned from a lovely evening. We were very dubious about going out for dinner, but we are so glad we did. The restaurant was extremely quiet, so no issues with social distancing etc. The food was fantastic and very good value, we ate from the set menu, we were tempted by the Christmas menus, the garlic mushrooms sounded lovely, service from Marissa was very good, attentive whilst not being overbearing. We will definitely have to have a return visit soon. Thanks to Lizzie and her team for a most enjoyable visit.

We came out for dinner and had a lovely evening. The team were very attentive, from the moment we walked through the door to leaving. On arrival the covid process was explained to us, we felt safe the whole time we were there, socially distanced tables,team wearing masks. It was very quiet in the restaurant, this is a sign of the times during this covid period but it was nice to have some form of normality again, with the bonus of not having to cook as well. The food was fantastic, I have to say one of the best fillet steaks we have ever eaten there, thank you Dotty. We will be back again soon. Thanks to Tasha and her team.

Couldn’t fault the service by Tasha, Marie, Jess and Abbey. They were very friendly, welcoming and attentive. Made dining during COVID very stress free with explaining all the rules, socially distanced tables and plenty of hand sanitizer. Food was great. Served quickly, hot and cooked to perfection. I have been to this pub/restaurant on many occasions with my family, and we have always come away with smiles on our faces. Yesterday, we were served by the very friendly and helpful Donna. We all had different dishes, and we all enjoyed our meals very much. It is not 'Haute Cuisine', but good pub food cooked well, at very reasonable prices. The restaurant now seems to have a few less tables, meaning that the customers can be more separated to comply with the current 'social distancing' rules. I would recommend booking in advance as it gets quite busy at lunchtimes, especially on Fridays.

Had a lovely turkey roast dinner here today, it was beautiful, great portion size, perfect presentation, excellent value for money, excellent social distancing and great cleanliness! Highly recommend!!!

Just not suited to drinks only customers. “Order through our app” great - but I have no mobile signal and the Wi-fi doesn’t work. Ignored by staff so had one drink and left, there are much better places to go for drinks than here

Perfect All RounderPicked this gem from the internet, somewhere to meet friends at a half way point on their way to Bournemouth. Felt a bit worried what it would be like but I can honestly say it did not disappoint in any areas.Superb food - massive menu selection, service impeccable and lovely surroundings, we ate in the bar as we took our little dog but the bar area was perfect for us, rustic and quaint very clean, nice nooks and crannies, we loved the place.I just wish we lived nearer to the Wheatsheaf or we had something similar in Swindon. You will not be disappointed. 10/10

Upon arrival the Covid precautions were well displayed and followed. The staff were warm and welcoming. The menu had plenty of choice and was very reasonably priced. When the food arrived it was very tasty & hot! The staff were attentive and friendy without being intrusive. As most places we have been to have requested card payments, we did not bring any cash with us. We would have left a tip but unfortunately didn't have the option on the card payment machine - perhaps this is something the pub could look to provide?Thanks for a lovely evening!

We booked a last minute table for a family dinner, the service and clear instructions regarding covid rules, absolutely brilliant. Customer service 100% with our waitress Hannah tending to all of our needs, GF menu the best I've ever seen, highly recommend the bakewell tart.Thank you so much for looking after us and making us feel really safe. Cannot wait to visit again.

We've visited several times in the past 18 months and been impressed each and every time.The staff are supremely welcoming and attentive with nothing being too much trouble. Even in the midst of the current COVID crisis they have managed to organise effectively while at the same retaining a flair for an obliging, cosy atmosphere.The menu boasts something for everyone all in excellent quality and served well. For us the highlight has to be the lamb shoulder followed with a bakewell tart both of which are a testament to why veganism is just plain daft... ;-)The only extra we could hope for is to enjoy the outside/courtyard seating in the summer - so here's hoping.

The staff are friendly and the food choice good. We were advised of the pubs Covid 19 procedure and how to access the facilities. The meals were well presented, hot and presented well and a little more generous than needed to be, Our waitress Tasha, made us feel very welcome and checked if we were in need of anything. First class again.

When we entered the building Kate showed us to our table and explained they layout and rules very clearly whilst pointing out the pub safe monitor for extra reassurance. (Nathan was doing a brilliant job at pub safe)Charlotte very quickly took our drink and food order, whilst being very friendly and knowledgeable about the products we asked for.Becky delivered food efficiently and then continued to ask if we need anything else ie condiments.Lizzie came and asked how everything was and took an extra drink order.The chef Dotty cooked an amazing fillet steak and perfect for a mediim rare. We ordered some puddings and Sandra made a beautifully presented lemon drizzle cake and it was so delicious off the special menu I would definitely recommend.

We've been a few times now since lockdown was lifted and we've not been disappointed.The staff are friendly and helpful and we feel safe there as staff wear visrs and tables are spaced out.Probably the best roasts around wirh lovely crispy potatoes and tender meat.Our server today was Kate but they are all nice.Good value, good food, good prices.

We visited the wheatsheaf for the first time since lockdown. Excellent visit. We were greeted by very friendly informative staff who explained the system . We were shown to a isolated table and felt safe. Our server was Anna who was extremely professional and friendly. Her service was exceptional and made us feel very welcome. Our food was all excellent and very tasty and hot. We all thoroughly enjoyed this visit and looking forward to next time. Thanks for making this a enjoyable lunchtime.

We booked a lunch table for 5 after having been to Basingstoke Crematorium to scatter my father's ashes. This was our second visit but we'd only had drinks on our first visit. We were welcomed when the rules for distancing were explained and we were shown where the temporary toilets were. Shown to our table and Donna was our server and she was EXCELLENT. Very friendly and helpful. The meal was a little long in arriving but it was explained the delay was due to a large table being served and we were next. Food arrived very soon after that. Food excellent. Puds especially yummy and the ice cream was swapped for custard which we prefer. Bill total was excellent value. We were happy to leave a decent tip for staff. If in area again will definitely try and go again.

We have eaten here many times & usually take our guide dog in training who is always welcomed in the restaurant, the last time being 5 days ago on a busy Saturday evening when everything was fine & the service was exemplary. However we went with friends lunchtime today & were told that as we had a dog we could not eat in the restaurant but had to sit in the extremely unwelcoming bar area. The service on this occasion was very slow, when we finally got our food, that was fine. If this had been our first visit we would not be returning, let’s hope it gets back to normal next time.

We have been to the Wheatsheaf Restaurant many times and continue to return there for eating out as it is very good value,good food , nice ambiance and very friendly and helpful staff. Donna in particular is very good - a friendly face and a very pleasant and helpful person.

Starters a bit expensive. But OK . Main meals OK . I had very poor meat in a grill meal. Did not complain . Took it home for our dog. Puddings were v good . A bit expensive. Liqueur coffees v good . Nice price £3. 95. I'd go back enjoyed it. Pity about the poor meat. Shoe sole steak.

Shared platter was ok but chicken bit tough. Roast was very nice. Jodie our waitress is super - always looks after us when we stay. An asset to you!

Have been here as a couple and been impressed. Yesterday we went for a family meal, 6 adults & 1 child. The restaurant didn't disappoint , the food was excellent and the service fantastic. They had run out of pavlova which was a disappointment to the youngster in our party , but they spoke to the chef and he made her a almost pavlova which she really enjoyed. Special mention to our waitresses Marissa & Hannah , they went above and beyond. Lovely evening had by all.

We had a lovely meal at The Wheatsheaf, thanks to the Eat out to Help out scheme. Would definitely recommend this pub, great menu choices, food was lovely and the staff were friendly and helpful. I felt safe thanks to the safety procedures in place. Marissa our waitress was very helpful and lovely. She helped us make good pudding choices, which is very important ;-) Stef was also very helpful and ensured we had a good time.

We came to celebrate our son's birthday. Four adults & our 1 year old granddaughter. There was was a good selection of food on the menu, and the staff provided excellent service. The lovely food was served very quickly and efficiently. Covid-19 procedures were in place and staff were wearing face shields.A very pleasant experience, highly recommended.

Felt very comfortable and welcomed into the Wheatsheaf last night (Friday the 21st) staff were lovely and food was perfect! Thank you to all staff Lizzie, Hannah, Lydia and Jodie!!

Went for an early dinner and was not disappointed. Good food and excellent service particularly from Natasha.

We visited the Wheatsheaf today for lunch having booked the table on line. We received very good service from the time we were met in the entrance until we left. The restaurant is certainly COVID proof with tables set at correct social distancing. The food as usual was very good and is very reasonably priced. Donna our waitress was very attentive, helpful and pleasant. We will of course be returning in the very near future.

We had a marvellous meal and the waitress Lizzie made it all the better with a warm welcome. The food was first class and the service was prompt. Lizzie made sure we wanted for nothing. We will defiantly be going back again.

My sister in law and I went here for lunch today , we had a lovely kind helpful waitress called Donna , our food was great , served with a smile 😊 Will definitely be going here again !!

We met friends who were staying at the hotel who now live in Plymouth for mid morning coffee, and stayed for lunch. We were a party of 8, all our meals were excellent. All the staff were very efficient, first class social distancing measures meant we all felt safe. Donna our server was exceptional, friendly, courteous & nothing was too much trouble. We will return.

Had a lovely meal. Everything was organised very well, with social distancing & cleanliness. Food was great & plentiful. Bonus was, it was half price with the "eat out to help out". Was good value without that.

Hôtel plein de charme. Nuit au calme (nécessaire avec une enfant de 9ans!). Le personnel est très agréable. Nous y retournerons avec grand plaisir!

Towards the end of lock down when we began to be able to entertain in our garden, the takeaway service provided by the Wheatsheaf was invaluable. Best of all the batter on the fish and the chips remained crisp. Generous supplies of tartare sauce as well

We had a fantastic meal for a good price. Food was excellent but the nicest thing was our server Donna. She is most friendly, courteous and very efficient - a total pleasure !We sincerely commend Wheatsheaf for such a good person, she made our day.

The atmosphere was very relaxing and the waitress Donna was very pleasant and helpful. Will definitely eat in again. Most pleasant experience.

I bought my mother in law here for her first time out since lockdown. She was very nervous but when entering the restaurant she became much more at ease seeing how well social distancing was being followed. We struggled to place our order on the app so Donna took our orders very promptly and Cal sorted our drinks.The food was very yummy and extremely reasonable in price. She can’t wOt to come again.

We have eaten here quite often and have always found the food delicious and tasteful. We arrived without a booking and did not expect to be allowed to dine. The wonderful waitress asked the manager of there were any no shows. Lucky for us there were and we were shown to the table.Thank you to all the staff at Dummer Wheatsheaf and shame on the no- shows you are going to ruin many a business

Just had lunch at the wheatsheaf, it was excellent as usual. Our waitress was Donna who was al very helpful and cheerful as always.

I stay here regularly on business and can highly recommend both the hotel and restaurant. Now during the Covid situation, the hotel and restaurant remain extremely clean and tidy, with new systems in place to ensure safety. All staff are extremely polite, in particular my thanks to both Lizzie and Donna for such great service.
