Wheatsheaf in East Hampshire

The kitchen had an issue with food supply which the bar staff and kitchen staffed discussed at the bar. No issues until we over heard this from our table, coming up with excuses to give us as to why they couldn’t serve food. They didn’t have enough time to defrost the food we ordered we heard. They proceeded to tell us the extractor fan wasn’t working and we could have a refund, not an apology, just a refund. After mentioning politely to the bar staff, we were called rude not directly, but once again we can hear everything from our table. 10/10 would recommend

Very attentive staff. Food timely and tasty

OK, we were there for a lunch at 2pm on Sunday and everyone else may have gone - but we (11 of us) were the only people in a very dreary restaurant. Poor (almost non existent) decorations in the restaurant. Very boring menu - burgers/ pizza/ fried fish etc and not at all good when it came. On the plus side the staff were friendly, but it did not set us up well for our family Christmas outing to the Watercress line Christmas train ride.

Like most wheatsheafs it's pretty bog standard but nice enough place for a pint. It prefer to sit outside in the summer

Had a lovely meal there last night although it was quiet at 6.00pm the kids were up to their own thing and no one battered an eyelid, staff helpful! Thanks team 🫶

Went for a friends birthday party, friendly staff, good atmosphere.

Fresh homemade burger was amazing. One of the best burgers I ever had. Would definitely recommend this place. Bar staff were lovely as well.

I would have given 5 stars, but most of the beer taps were empty, so the choices were limited. Food was good.

Seemed pleasant enough but closing at 9pm was annoying enough to cost it a star.

Never ever experienced a pub with such bad food. They only sell shop brought pies and had no chips half the beers where out and the mulled wine was hot sangria for a £5. Definitely needs a lick of paint. And improved decor. Felt sorry for the staff thought a manager should really be working to observe the mistakes.

Friendly bar staff reasonably priced drinks. But the food really let's the place down . £9.00 for a supermarket brought steak pie with mashed potatoes which didn't taste homemade. £12 for scampi and chips cheap scampi frozen chips. The service was slow but the server was really apologetic .

This pub is beyond awful, they have what looks like underage staff serving alcohol, management and other members of staff that are ridiculously rude. Avoid at all costs, if I could give this a 0 star I would

Pleasant atmosphere nice polite staff

We have just been to this pub for the 1st time and the food was absolutely amazing. Roast dinner was like a grandmas Sunday roast. Definitely be going back again. Service was lovely, clean and welcoming pub. Thank you Lisa & Anthony x

The lady in the bar was really nice. The hamburger wasn't (to my taste?). The interior looks nice, and there's plenty of space outside. Good parking and location.

I can’t recommend the wheatsheaf enough! The whole team are absolutely lovely and so welcoming, the food is superb at such a reasonable price. We used the pub for a party as we were let down from another venue last minute and we couldn’t have picked anywhere better, best night out we’ve had in a long time! Popped in primarily because we needed food due to a power cut. An example of how sometimes the unplanned is great. Excellent service and the food was well presented, good portion size and tastes great. Will definitely become regulars.

Lovely and clean, very bright inside giving it a warm feeling, the food was very good and the staff were lovely, we have booked again would definitely recommend.

Our second visit for lunch - in fact we might come to Alton again just to come here for lunch. Warm welcome, good service, great pub food, generous portions at a very reasonable price. We enjoyed the background music and it was the most well polished pub I have ever been to - the bar and tables were gleaming! We left feeling well fed and relaxed.

Did not know that this pub existed found by chance on walkabout decided to try a pint and then the food what can I say the best steak I have had in years and my wife had the steak with scampi tails and she enjoyed also can't wait to go back.

Had the worse Christmas meal ever. The turkey was cheap and nasty turkey roll the vegetables were not cooked everthing was cold 🥶. The waitresses did there best to serve but were over whelmed. The barman could not pour a half pint shandy! The only beer on offer was Doombar and they could mot make a bloody mary. The decor is cheap and nasty in keeping with the rest of the pub. You felt the sticky carpet on your shoes. This used to be a sports pub till a few months ago. They have s long way to go before they can make it great pub. They should start with the Manageress who is the most frighteningly bad tempered looking person ever.

Had an evening meal here last Friday, beef and ale pie with broccoli, followed by a rich chocolate dessert. Staff were very accommodating, despite the pub being very busy. The meal was good value for money too. No fault of the staff, but I had to move tables because one group of male drinkers kept passing drinks to each other over my meal. Quite annoying.

Nice place, decent drinks, free parking and a decent atmosphere. Music is the evenings isn't quite to my taste, and it can quickly get very crowded, but it's a great place nonetheless

It was a very quiet Wednesday afternoon, and we were treated to a very warm welcome by the barmaid. I had a Guinness and the OH had a doombar and both were very good. The beer garden was lovely, quiet and spacious.

Early evening dinner. We ordered our food and drink at the bar and sat outside. The lady who served us was friendly. The food was good. The price was reasonable

Rude ignorant staff can't even bothered to speak to a customer as they come in. Waited for 15 minutes for someone to acknowledge me then went somewhere else and was approached within seconds. If you don't want customers or to work in the hospitality industry, get another job.

Had the best Sunday lunch for a long time The Beef was cooked to perfection and all the veg was fresh and crisp not suggy and over cooked like some places. Service was very good also .I'm not one to recommend normally but this is definitely worth a visit

Friendly and outdoor sunny spot. Nice food at fair prices.

Along with other pubs, the Wheatsheaf was open only for those sitting outside. During Spring, the Market Square gets more & more sunshine, through summer & then tapers off in Autumn. All the benches outside were full & there was a great sense of community & enjoyment. I'm sure that as things get back to how it was before the pandemic, business will pick up dramatically. I was with a friend & felt so good to be able to have a pint together. I'm pretty sure it will rate 4 or 5 stars soon.

Really nicely done out. Food was good, but the wait time was very slow. It wasn't busy but we waited 40 minutes for our starter, then was told they were sold out, but did have an alternative. Then waited again for our main around another 40-50 minutes after they cleaned our table. We weren't offered a dessert and had to ask in the end, to which we never received it!. They forgot! Think they need to get the staff up and running a little faster.

A completely different pub to before! This was my first visit here since the renovations and wow! Feels so much bigger! A lovely clean, spacious and nicely decorated pub with friendly staff and tasty food! The gravy was to die for 🤤 definitely coming back!

The food here is really good. Loads of gluten free options. Tables well spaced out, staff all in masks, felt very safe.

Refurbished, very clean good special food deals

I frequently go to this pub. The food is amazing especially the roast dinner, who wouldve thought roasted beatroot would taste devine. As its lockdown i thought id try them as a takeaway and got a takeaway rotisserie Chciken, this was so succulent and juicy and made for perfect pub road at home! Despite everythings thats going on the staff were as smiley and pleasant as always. Thank you.

Visited lunchtime. Spotlessly clean, COVID rules adhered to, staff friendly, outside seating in Market Square, food great, highly recommended, a hidden gem!

Just had a wonderful dinner with my partner, at the Wheatsheaf. I had the lamb shank, it was delicious, and so tender. My partner had the pork belly, which was equally as succulent and delicious. We had chocolate brownie & ice cream, and bramley apple crumble with custard for pudding. That was an excellent meal, 10/10. Service was really good, and very friendly. Will definitely be returning again regularly.

Went in for a late lunch. Had a home made Steak and Ale Pie with veg and mash. Came very quickly and was well cooked and hot. I also had a white wine and soda. The staff were friendly. The pub was pretty bulk standard. If in the area again would use again. Covid compliant.

Poor service , couldn’t get attention of the evening staff , couldn’t go to the bar as witnessed others being told off for moving, joining tables and going to the bar . Customers we aggressively told to wear masks on entering the bar . Couldn’t pay and when we were we were overcharged . Tables were not cleaned between customers , no toilet roll in the ladies loo. No hand sanitiser at tables . Some Staff avoided eye contact and inattentive. Avoid !

Very nice ambience in a Covid safe environment. We had a delicious meal with good service, so definitely recommend a visit here.

Great fantastic wonderful the best food in Alton. Steak was huge 16oz and the pub was so clean. Staff were warming and friendly. They were very busy every table full. Had a really good night with my family highly recommended !!

What a great night at the Wheatsheaf, a Lovely Landlady Michele and brilliant Staff, who are very welcoming and friendly, a beautiful and very tasty meal, a busy evening but social distancing rules set in place, and friendly other customers. Will definitely be returning. 👍

Very disappointing evening. At a first glance the makeover is good. However several tables hadn’t been cleared and the bar was covered with dirty glasses. After waiting ages, our starter was brought at the same timed as the mains. The vegetables we ordered had been swapped over, so we each got the other’s. All around us food was being delivered to the wrong tables and then being removed before being taken all round the bar, while the waitress asked people if the food was theirs. The food was ok, but we certainly won’t be returning.

We had an excellent meal, my wife had an amazing ploughman's and I had a lovely 16ounze steak cooked just right medium rare. Highly recommend this venue.

Popped in for a pint and rose spritzer and has a warm welcome and great pint. The pub has been done up and looks modern and clean. Happy to Return and have another pint and I am told by others the food is lovely

Popped into the Wheatsheaf on Saturday evening with my nephew for a couple of drinks. This is my first time there since the refurbishment. The place is completely changed - and 100% for the better. Honestly, it’s a completely different bar, tastefully decorated and really well finished. The furnishings are well chosen and the whole feel of the place is spot on. Definitely going to be a regular place to visit for a few drinks on a night out. Looking forward to coming back to some food.

Great pub to relax and chit chat,friendly staff and great piped in music. But would recommend that the lights be dimmed a little more in the back room for a cosy relaxing ambience.Its finally nice to have a decent pub in Alton.Much better then the previous Wheatsheaf.

GREAT PUB, The Landlady Mandy is just Fantastic, a natural warm person. During the week, it is a local's bar/pub for drinkers. The weekend it takes on a more lively atmosphere. A nice place to go.

Best place to end a night out in Alton. Lively and good for younger ages. New set up now so unsure what this will be like or if this pub will keep it's same vibe
