Perfect place for breakfast if you’re staying in the attached Travelodge. Very happy with the breakfast and table service by Maddie (hope this is correct),perfect thank you .

Worst Wetherspoons I have visited. Tables all dirty and filled with dirty cutlery. Girl who served me(think her name was brie) wearing a blue shirt may indicate title of job, was absolutely hostile, rude, didn’t bother to listen, didn’t get my order right, then had to pay again to a drinks order she didn’t listen to, but looking back on the app it was cheaper so she over charged me, was slow and if I’m honest seemed like she didn’t wanna be there or had a raging hangover. Shame.

one of yorks popular Weatherspoon's in the city center end of piccadilly we have been here more than few times for breakfate and lunch always nice for the price you pay.

Shambles which is apt for York. Hard to get served. Most of staff messing about with decorations. Only one good girl on. Beers not on the app told three time but still not on. Meal including 14 scrappy chips. Why are Wetherspoons always tight with their chips.

Shocking rude staff more interested in talking with each other and no care when it comes to cleaning tables of past customers, avoid avoid avoid

We love Weatherspoons, you get what it says on the tin and usually the staff are really nice, shame the manager of this one isn't. We walked in for our usual morning coffee, to find the majority of empty tables were full of dirty dishes, left over food, cups and glasses. We found a table with just a few glasses on and moved them to a table already full of dirty dishes. My husband went to the bar and got our coffees. The manager was just wandering around and seemed totally oblivious to the many tables full of dirty plates, he could have rolled up his sleeves and started clearing the tables himself as the staff were busy serving, but clearly this was beneath him. People walked in, looked and walked out again. My husband mentioned the place looked a shambles and the manager said if he didn't like it , my husband was welcome to leave. I've never seen such a lazy manager, he should be sacked, the staff were doing their best, but the manager Brandon, is not fit to work for such a high profile company.

I try Wetherspoons wherever I go (within reason) and usually have an average or above experience based on knowing where I am. I will say that it was busy and a really hot evening when I tried this one, which may explain some of the issues. However, I chose here because I'd had a long day, was hungry and thirsty and normally get drinks within 2 minutes of ordering on the app, and food within 10 minutes of that. My Coke and IPA took about 15 minutes to come, and (after 30 minutes had passed) I eventually got someone's attention and asked when my food might be coming. This was after seeing people ordering basic food after me and being served. Now I'm not blaming the staff - they were polite, friendly and rushed off their feet - but the system was clearly chaotic. Something that I have not experienced in the many 'spoons that I have visited. For clarity, it was 9.15pm when I ordered food. Not exactly the busiest time for that. My chicken and rice was okay, but not after such a long wait. I'm not tempted to return.

Welcome to Weatherspoons! They messed up our order, then expected US to pay the 90p difference before they would put it right. The service was slow, and the food was already going cold when it arrived.

Horrifically rude staff, overbearing and constantly making undue comments regarding perceived slights. Felt like a Sam Smith’s establishment. Not visiting again.

Front entrance strewn with broken glass on Saturday 13th April, 2024, 4pm. This is in on one of the main thoroughfares into York, international tourists passing by every few minutes. Come on management, get a grip. Doors should be closed until site is safe and fit for purpose, it is basic stuff and an easy clear up with the right equipment.

Mixed Grill is the most expensive thing on the menu. It sadly is inedible as the meat portions are meagre, this makes the fact you can’t set how you want things cooked worse as you land up with an assortment of cremated shoe leather. Oddly, the grilled chicken breast addition was almost undercooked and resembled a Brit on a Thai beach for the first time in spring. No check back either. I won’t order again.

Absolutely shocking service and unhelpful, some of staff have no customer service and rude and obnoxious never felt so unwelcome and I have been in the pub trade for 20 years

Nice ambience, service and staff very pleasant and efficient. Had the small fish and chips which were not brilliant, small being an imaginative and optimistic description. Would be wary of having again and will stick with my usual Wiltshire Ham.

We visited The Postern Gate for a Sunday breakfast. The food was as expected for a Wetherspoons, for the price and environment, which is the only reason the two rating. While we were finishing our drinks, an alarm started going off throughout the pub. There was no indication at all on if this was a test, or someone perhaps pushing an emergency exit door etc. About thirty seconds later, the staff, both on the floor and from the kitchen, simply started to leave via a side door, not once acknowledging anyone sitting down. At this point other customers, including ourselves, who had been trying to understand what was happening as there was literally no one asking people to leave, started to leave via all exits, some naturally in a rush. Given we had finished at this point, we chose not to wait around to re-enter. However, having worked in customer service before, it has baffled me that there was no thought from any staff member to ask customers to assemble safely and calmly. Wetherspoons is hardly known as the peak of customer experience, but if basic health and safety isn't considered by staff when an alarm is sounding, that crosses a big line.

Took the family to York for the day, because why not? It's York, it's a beautiful city full of charm a character. The Postern Gate was as good a place as any to start with it's central location close to the sights. Been to the pub quite a few times and it never really disappoints. Of course, it's a 'Spoons and you know what you're getting, but this one is one of the better in the chain's portfolio. Always get a nicely cooked breakfast that fills the gap and sets you up for the day. Lovely pub too with friendly, helpful staff. You can't really go wrong at The Postern, it's really rather good.

Have been here before - it was overcrowded & noisy the last time. Being a Sunday it was quieter, but still quite busy. I went to order the Whitley Neill Raspberry gin & it was the same old Wetherspoons story - out of stock. Quite frankly I don't know why they bother advertising it at all as they never have any. I have also noticed that the prices are creeping up quite a bit & there is quite a price difference between some branches

Start with a little negative 1st . Wrong main delivered which in my opinion was a small uncooked pizza. This was quickly replaced by a friendly member of staff. Unfortunately it was by a adult uncooked pizza. Quick fix they just need to be cook pizza longer. Staff are friendly and very hard working in this busy pub. Great bar and food menu at a reasonable price. Only place I really come in york for a drink now and will continue to do so.

Myself and my boyfriend use wetherspoons quite often. Mostly for drinks. We used to order food once in a while, until recently. We once ordered a meal, and they got our order so wrong. We decided to eat elsewhere. We did get a refund, even though they didn't get right. Yes, it's cheap and not many places, especially in york you can't get drinks cheaper. Some of the staff are kind and helpful. Some of the staff are students to which Some do s good job and some don't seem interested. You can sit at a table and watch staff go past a table full of glasses or plates . They walk past with someone's food or drinks. Walk past the table full of empty glasses or plates and dontbeven bother picking them up. It doesn't take two minutes to stop and collect a few glasses or plates. There have been times when you go to the bar. One or two staff members are serving, and you can see some of the other staff members stand not doing anything when it's busy at the bar. Wetherspoons is a nice place to go for cheap drinks. Although sometimes it can be very busy and sonetines slow service.

We visited this weatherspoons a few times as the punch bowl near our hotel doesn’t offer grilled options etc steaks and grilled chicken burgers. The food is good, reasonable prices. The restaurant is has a large seating area and very central to town and the train station with a Travelodge next door! My only criticism is the cleanliness of the ladies toilets, water all over the floor and no toilet paper in the cubicles. Apart from that, we had a pleasant experience.

Although I don’t like Wetherspoons as pubs, the fact that this was adjacent to our Travelodge hotel made it the best option for breakfast. Generally speaking you can expect a decent breakfast at a reasonable price at Wetherspoons and the only issue is whether or not you get a hot meal or a lukewarm one. In this instance it was decidedly average with lukewarm ingredients swiftly turning cold because they were served on cold plates; add the fact that all the eggs, including the poached eggs on a mushroom Benedict, had solid, hard yolks, and it is clear that those ingredients aren’t refreshed regularly in the kitchen. On the following evening we popped in for a last couple of drinks and the service and beers were very good. A couple in our party had some food and the curry was described as “OK I suppose” while some sort of burger was described as being awful. There is nothing new here; Wetherspoons is never a surprise, and as far as the chain is concerned, this branch is decidedly average. Mind you, it’s almost worth an extra star because, believe it or not, the toilet is on the ground floor, adjacent to the bar. I almost missed the usual Wetherspoons’ trek!

We stayed at the Travelodge which this Wetherspoons is attached to. My girlfriend isn’t really a fan but it took the hassle out of finding somewhere to eat first thing before starting our day. It’s a nice big building with the closest toilets I have ever come across in a pub renowned for having the toilets really far away from the bar area (I’ve visited a few). They were on the ground floor!! We didn’t drink here in the evening as there were plenty of “local” pubs not far away.

Big and busy but there always seem to be some seats available. Staff are generally friendly, a couple of exceptions, and the service tends to be pretty fast. Food is good for Wetherspoons and arrives quickly.

Visited here as we were staying at the travel lodge Hotel above it. We had breakfast here and were pleasently suprised it was fresh hot and tasty a bargain too!!

We visited this pub a few times whilst staying in York. We had breakfast twice and lunch on the day we were leaving. It was always very busy in here. I got served quicker than I thought because of the queues but they did have a lot of staff serving. Every time we had good here we got guild it was a 39 minute wait but we just waited. Each time the food was served much quicker which was a nice surprise. The staff were very friendly, it was quite clean in there, better than most Wetherspoons I have been in. The toilets were clean. It had a garden to sit in but as it was very cold not many were sitting outside. There were also tables snd chairs out the front of the pub. I would go back if I visited York again as it’s just what you need before a long day out is a reasonable breakfast.

Went out for a meal before going to the theatre. Me and my partner got there for around 5.30 pm and was very packed but was able to get a table thankfully. I ordered 2 pints of Guniness on the app and waited for 10 to 15 mins. We never received our two pints, so my partner went to the bar and got 2 pints of Guinness straightaway. While he was at the bar, he asked about how long of a wait is the food and a member of staff said 45mins. So as soon as my partner came back, I went to order food and also inform the staff we had not received our first two pints of Guinness. I waited at the bar for about 10mins and after the lady in front of me had been served, a member of staff asked who’s next? I was about to order food then an older guy cuts in front of me, I said to the man ‘excuse me but I was waiting before you’ and the staff member continues to serve him and then two minutes later and older woman gets served before I do. I went back to the table to where my partner was sitting and we left. We will definitely not be returning

Absolutely appalling. Staff very abrupt right through to the managers. It was like a fridge sitting having our drinks. We had to keep repeatidly closing the door. If this is a fire door so the manager said it should be able to close on its own. Everyone was cold. It's a horrible well can't even call it a pub. The managers need a good shake up as they don't know what they are doing....... Are they students!!!! I think the health and safety executives need a visit...... Soon.

Where do I start dirty tables, and breakfast was freezing. Ordered 2 traditional breakfast sausage missing off one and beans off another. Couldn’t be bothered to complain and wait as the food we had was freezing. Save yourself money and go to Greggs on our second day that’s what we did and half the price.

Didn't want to splash out £20 each on a Sunday dinner when we had an event booked for later so thought we would try here as less expensive and close to our hotel. My husbands double American burger was inedible and he left it. Said he would have been better off at McDonald's for half the amount. My jacket potato was more suited to a child than an adult with just a handful of nuked beans. The only person happy was my 9 year old with chips! The food really wasn't great and although I tried to put on a positive spin as my hubby was so p@*%ed off I would say go anywhere else but here. We ended up having to buy food somewhere else as so hungry which in hindsight was what we shoukd have done all along. My glass of wine was alright though.

I had a hankering for cold chips with warm ham today and boy Spoons did not disappoint. The experience was topped off with two of the worst over fried eggs I think I’ll see in my lifetime. Also nice to see Spoons making their money go further, if not mine, with a portion of chips that was maybe cut from half a medium potato, and a small bowl of roasted vegetables that was less than 2cm deep in a narrow bowl. When I saw those veggies I honestly thought they’d brought the wrong bowl by mistake, and this was a finished one that had been returned to the kitchen. Portion size was so small I was still hungry afterwards and I didn’t know whether to go home and thrash myself with birch rods or try and order more food - both very similar experiences. I decided to order a cheesy garlic bread. When it came I thought perhaps the cheese part was still in the kitchen so I asked staff, was this really the cheesy garlic bread. She said yes. But if I cannot see it, cannot smell it, cannot taste it, I have to wonder, was it really a cheesy garlic bread. All this still scores a walloping 3/5 as it was an average Spoons experience, and no one punched me in the face or stole my wallet.

Birthday weekend spoilt Visted this bar later 22.00 on 16th June Purchased drinks then 20 mins later we were surrounded by a security guard and 2 staff members..to be told drinks not paid for yet I bought further drinks via the app my partner paid via card ..I was excorted to the bar I said I paid was going to show proof then 1 staff member said it must be him..Nice...meaning my partner..his card hadn't scanned correctly it took around 20 mins for them.to realise.while jn the meantime I ordered more drinks..I was disgusted and spoke to the Manager who agreed that it wasn't acceptable we were treated like criminals..in front if other customers...they all witnessed it...totally unprofessional..we won't be visiting another wetherspoons after this ..it ruined my birthday weekend

We arrived around 8pm. The place wasn't particularly busy and there were plenty of tables available, including some next to the windows which were opened onto the river Foss below. Lovely. Except that a great number (if not most) of the free tables, including those with river views, were cluttered with used glasses and crockery. We had to clear our table ourselves. And to get to some of the tables customers had to negotiate gangways blocked here and there by chairs which must have been moved and left there by large groups. During the course of our ninety-minute or so stay staff came and went continually, but few seemed to take any empties or plates back to the bar or kitchen. Staff walked around the mispositioned chairs, but they didn't move them to their correct positions. Allowing a pub to become so untidy is a great discourtesy to customers. I'm surprised at Wetherspoons for letting it happen. I have not encountered anything quite as bad as this in any other Wetherspoons branch. So I conclude that there are training issues at Postern Gate. I hope this negative review will encourage managers to address them. On the up-side, staff are invariably helpful and polite, and table service is prompt. They just need to keep the place tidier.

Nobody in spoons works as good as Charlie, goes out of his way to collect glasses clean tables credit to the company, nice to see a young person have some go about them

Food portions are incredibly small, somehow the chips were burnt but the chicken burger was undercooked. The coke was flat also, we planned to go a few times before trying it. After the experience that obviously didnt happen

Came here yesterday for lunch with my children. Comfy booths available as you walk in which are nice and cosy. Ordered on the app but was frustrating as there seemed to be a lot of food unavailable. Finally ordered our third choice, which arrived in good time considering how busy it was. Unfortunately although the plates were very hot, some of the food itself was cold. Had to send it back to the kitchen but the staff were lovely and it came back out again slightly warmer than before (though still not hot). Couldn't be bothered waiting longer as my children were well over halfway through their meals by now. Food is fine and quite tasty. The small portions are really good value. Ordered dessert, which again was nice and good value for money. It came to the table quite fast as well. Overall it was OK. Bad points were - It was annoying to be able to select food on the app, only to be informed right at the end that it wasn't available. That happened twice so I got my third choice of meal. The food was cold when it came and only lukewarm when it was brought back out again. Good points - food was quite tasty (the bits that were hot). Fast service. Nice staff. Cosy seats.

The online food app made it tricky for us to order our food in the way that we wanted. For example, instead of fried egg in our breakfasts we wanted scrambled, but there was no option for this on the app! There was also no option to remove the egg altogether from the meal. Apart from that, my family and I enjoyed a good quality breakfast, with delicious and crispy hash browns ! There is also a cold water dispenser for you to fill up your water bottles if you don’t want to use the water at the next door Travelodge or simply need a refill! Finally, we had a lovely server who made us feel at home and loved to share a joke with us. Overall, I would recommend this place for a good breakfast

Very light and airy restaurant that is typical wetherspoons, ie good food at a good price. The only down side that we found was that the menu was quite reduced compared to other wetherspoons, although there was still enough choice not to be a problem....

A modern Spoons, not really in keeping with hte local area, but as usual Spoons have retained a link to hte history in the name of the pub. Generally much cleaner than our local Spoons, and the tables were cleaned much more quickly.
