Waitrose Cafe in York

I have met several friends at the cafe at Waitrose for coffees, catch ups and the occasional food. Always spotless and a quiet relaxed atmosphere.

What a delightful experience! There have clearly been improvements when I have read the latest reviews as our food was absolutely delicious and very fresh. A vegetarian breakfast was super and the porridge and blueberries top notch. The cappuccino was excellent - good quality coffee at a good strength. The staff were friendly and we couldn’t fault it. We will certainly be returning here when we next visit York.

Decided on quick coffee, before beginning our shopping. It was busy, but we managed to find a seat. I've been before, and find their coffee excellent. I decided to ask Barissta, if they sell the coffee that's used, she explained coffee comes in bulk but she'd find me an equivalent. Minutes later, she appeared with a bag. It was "no charge " to see if I liked. I was surprised and delighted by this act, I'll definitely be buying.

Long queue. Slow service and sign saying no hot food available. They just don’t seem able to crack it here. There’s always something not right

What has happened to the quality of hot food at this cafe, We ordered Ham egg & chips I cannot understand why they serve the food in large bowls, the Ham was the cheapest processed crap ever, the eggs were ok, the chips were frozen bits about 8 chips, the green salad leaves were mush as the bowl was hot. ( bonus hot bowl) I'm done with that cafe £8 per serving.

Slow service and the cafe was relatively empty. 30 mins for a small breakfast. Surrounded by middle class retired Tory types the smell of sickly perfume with the lady who parked up beside me covered in jewellery put me off my breakfast. It was like a Hogarth scene. A privileged couple liked to push into the queue. Not a great experience.

Had the traditional breakfast served in a bowl (for some reason); sausages under done, both poached eggs hard, 1 slice of hard toast for extra pound: 12.25 in total with coffee. Quiet weekday morning, so pleasant ambience, with free papers to read. Would go back and try a cheaper offering, hopefully with greater attention to detail on food items.

Although I often use the shop, this was only my second time in using the cafe, having been put off the first time. Once again, the same problems. Shortage of staff possibly but long wait in the queue to order; long wait for food. Tables weren't cleared (we had to clear our own). The food was okay but nothing special - for example, no garnishes with the rolls we ordered. Poor presentation. My partner had a bacon roll which he said was dry (streaky bacon used & overcooked). No wonder there were plenty of seats available. Very disappointing (especially for Waitrose).

Food and drink is nice, though higher price than a usual supermarket as expected for Waitrose. Lady serving us wasn't rude, but didn't seem overly keen to listen to our whole order before disappearing to make the first hot drink for us, so it ended up taking some time to order something relatively small.

Perfect coffee thank you and service with a smile. Very enjoyable 🌞💛

Not enough seating, self clear tables. Counter staff not kept informed by kitchen staff of items sold out. Staff did however put themselves out to fetch soup from store to cover sold out item. Not a particularly good advert for Waitrose.

Simple, well priced and quick service. Can’t go wrong for a quick stop to eat! Me and the Mrs loved the cake and brunch style menu. The people were lovely and helpful!

Hoy tomé una taza de café en la cafetería, pero me sorprendió lo baja que era la selección de pasteles.¿Tampoco hay periódicos en la tienda hoy? Al mirar alrededor de la tienda, se publicaron avisos en el mostrador de pan y en el puesto de periódicos que indicaban que debido a las dificultades del proveedor no se habían recibido entregas. ¡Mi esposo es un quiosco de prensa en la misma área y no hubo escasez de entrega de periódicos nacionales / locales del mayorista que tiene un centro de distribución en York!

Visité Waitrose Caf en York, y solo puede describirse como una experiencia impactante. La cola no fue tan larga, pero el personal de alguna manera logró tomar 15 minutos para atender a los 4 clientes frente a mí. ¡Cuando finalmente me sirvieron, no pude encontrar una mesa porque todas habían sido tomadas por personas que esperaban en la cola! ¡Esto a pesar de un letrero en la entrada del Caf que le dice a la gente que no haga esto! !

I love this place, I always go when I fancy something classic english style for breakfast. Service quite fast and the quality is very good for the price. Definitely going again.

I visited here for a large breakfast and a coffee, and it came to £10! Very expensive from what it is, and in a supermarket cafe!! Not worth it at all!!

Disappointing - but what do you expect of a company that really doesn't care about customers or employees - not quite sure what motivates them - supposedly they are all partners, but some are better than others!

Este café realmente no es lo que debería ser. Esperas que sea mucho mejor, como parte de Waitrose, pero realmente no lo es. Lovely food. Lovely staff. Quick and efficient even when it's busy. The staff appear to have some form of rapport with the regular, older, clientele - it's very pleasant to see from a big national supermarket!

Called in for a quick spot of breakfast whilst my van was getting tyres at a nearby garage

Called for what we thought would be a high quality snack. First problem was there were no trays, next had protracted discussions with the person taking the orders re what we wanted, but had little confidence that she had understood, which as it transpired was justified. Waited ages for the hot food, my Berger was grey and uninviting, with water soaking into the bottom half of the bread bun, looked like it had been boiled, my wife's chips were missing, my coffee was not what I ordered, and had not chocolate dust on the pathetically thin top. Had asked for vinegar, non arrived. Brought lack of chips etc to the notice of the waitress, twice before they finally arrived, overcooked and with a bill for £2.00. When I went to pay for the "extra" chips the person on the till knew nothing about them. Overall a disappointing experience won't be rushing back for a repeat.

Called into Waitrose Cafe with our daughter, this place does not get much better. Lack of care, no feeling of service at all, although we are regular customers at Waitrose supermarket. Our daughter had a Pain au Chocolate it was so dry, had one bite out out it and it was awful. Complained to Customer Services, refunded our money and 20p for our trouble. Hardly true compensation for something that should have been quality. This Cafe needs to bright its ideas up. Better service is needed.

Fuimos una mañana mientras que trabajando desde casa como me apetecía un bocadillo de salchichas y una cerveza. No me golpe pero es una cafetería supermercado. Se esperaba gourmet?

Teníamos la intención de comer en un restaurante de comida sino de encontrar cerrado fuimos a este café. Oh cielos. Fue una decepción. No hay vasos limpios o cubiertos disponibles sin pedirlas. Aunque tengo que decir que la zona de la cafetería necesita ser ampliado para lidiar con la fiebre de la hora del almuerzo, francamente no me molestaría. Mi amigo dijo que era bonita (literalmente lasaña solo que con algunas hojas de ensalada). Mi bacalao pastel de pescado tenía un sabor peculiar que no podía identificar y las patatas fritas eran también desagradables para comer (seco y duro). La chica era agradable, hasta único aquí me temo. No importaba tener café o cara torta en caso era igualmente comestible.

Arrastra aquí a través de mi esposa después de ir de compras. Tenía puerro y sopa de patatas. Mi favorito sopa. Me pareció incluso un puerro y sopa de patatas mal es agradable. Yo estaba equivocado.

Qué lugar concurrido este pequeño café. Segunda vez que me encontré con un amigo para tomar café aquí y ella tiene una tarjeta waitrose que permite comprar para ella una bebida y conseguir una bebida gratis - qué ganga.

Well the coffee shop is disappointing as it was just so dirty, the seats n tables are all dirty not been wiped all day and sodas have stains on them! Not what I expected from Waitrose Cafe!

Called in to Waitrose Cheltenham branch for lunch today at about 2.30. There are nearly always very long queues and lots of tables piled up with trays waiting to be cleared, so I was pleased to see there were some empty tables. I wasn't surprised that there were no sausages and just a few potato wedges left after the Saturday lunchtime rush, but I was surprised to see three different varieties of square cardboard carton ready meals for £5 each keeping warm on the hot dishes where the hot meals are usually on display. I spoke to a member of staff and she said Waitrose are doing the meals differently now. I eat a meal there at least once a week. They've always served up the hot meals individually for each customer and it's always looked very appetising and tasted delicious, but these ready meals looked like smaller portions and looked dry so I didn't bother to have any food there this time and went to Asda for a sausage bap.Maybe cutting down on the visual quality of the restaurant meals is a plan by Waitrose to cut down on the queues and amount of free coffee they give away?

Not so much choice but is good quality with excellent service. Don't forget ur Waitrose cards for free drinks.

Went for a coffee and a catchup with my friend and a spot of shopping too. Cafe service slightly slow, tables needed clearing but understaffed so perhaps management need to look at this. In the store, a very friendly assistant served me (without throwing things at me like some assistants do) hopefully will try to get her again on my next visit

Waitrose York is one of their larger stores, they have a fantastic range of produce, meats and fishTravelling from Lincolnshire it is not easy to find, you need to pick up the A64 North, and take the the Hull road to the City and follow the City walls Waitrose is opposite a section of these.

We visited on Sunday afternoon. It was supposed to be a quick pop in for coffee while we were out shopping. The queue seemed to take for ever to move, there were limited staff on. When we sat down to drink our coffee it was cold. We couldn't face queing again for replacements. Added to that there was a screaming child, who the parents thought it was OK to let run wild round the cafe. No staff intervened and after 5 minutes we couldn't stand it any more and left - leaving our cold coffee in situ. Probably won't visit again judging from other reviews read either.

Good food and good shopping. Food is a bit expensive but you are getting a nice experience while shopping. Good selection too.

Excellent service and very tasty, good value, nutritious meals. Their salads are always excellent and they do change the menu quite regularly to give more variety. Even better having a free coffee, courtesy of our Waitrose loyalty cards (can highly recommend signing up for them). It is an excellent marketing tool and has got us doing some shopping there. :-)

I visited the Waitrose Café on 11 July with a friend for lunch. We both had a bunless burger, a drink and we shared a pot of wedges. This cost a little over £20. The food was good, freshly cooked and prompt, and the salad was well dressed. It just felt like we had paid quite a lot for a simple plate of food, especially when we had to clear and clean our table before we sat down and there is a distinctly 'canteen-y' style to the space. Probably a venue best suited to hot drinks and a bit of a snack rather than a meal.

Tea cake and chips, a new classic combo! Service was above and beyond. Give that ginger kid a pay rise. However I've seen better late art! Two good looking chefs in the back, what fantastic food. However insufficient mayonnaise portions!

I visit this cafe regularly and often eat here. The staff are nice, some of the cakes are very good, especially the ginger cake and lemon tart, and the chips are always well cooked. Tea or coffee is free with a myWaitrose card, provided you eat something.They used to do a very good curry but no longer and sadly the hot food choice is a little limited and unchanging.This is better than any other supermarket cafe but I'd like to see more choice and in summer better protection of the cakes from flies (the staff do their best but they need more enclosed chilled cabinets).A good cafe with the potential to be even better.

We go here every few months, having forgotten what happened previously, how long it took to get served, how slowly the queue moves, how we both stand and wait in the queue while lots of people go and sit down ignoring the prominent signs saying "please don't occupy a table until you have your food/drinks", observing how this notice is never policed and that's why lots of people ignore it and quietly watching how the serving staff walk out with the food orders and seldom pick up dirty crockery on the way back, this doubling their own workload. The food is generally fine, although after the long wait anything is likely to be well received. Last Saturday, the queue length was 15 minutes (this is a cafe) and the food a further 20 minutes. My overall impression is that these problems are the result of poor or absence of training, leadership and targeting. The staff are generally polite, just they never seem that brisk or quick.

Had lunch in here last week and ordered various food and drink items. Even though it was not particularly busy at the time it took ages for the food orders to arrive, we thought they had forgotten about us! When the food did arrive it was OK.

My Husband & I visit Waitrose on a regular weekly basis. We decided today to go in the cafe. It was on a Friday, it was fairly quiet, but what a disgrace. Whilst we do have a free hot drink, we had a bite to eat. The floors were very dirty, food debris & other rubbish on the floors under tables. The tables inside and outside not been cleared. This really is getting worse. Young members of staff busy talking to each other. It is not what you expect from Waitrose. The sofas and chairs badly stained. The other chairs were all over the place, not put back at tables, a real mess!! Waitrose management really need to get their act together. The toilets are a mess as well. I am getting fed up of complaining to staff about them and nothing gets done. Today one of the sinks taps not working, no toilet rolls, thank goodness a kind lady offered me a clean new tissue as I had left my handbag with my husband in the cafe. My husband is always saying the men's toilets are a disgrace too. Really is this the standard Waitrose is giving to customers?

Excellent Free coffee. I repeat, excellent free coffee. I say this because it is the main reason I keep going back despite my constant complaints about the cleanliness of this restaurant. Tables so slow to be cleared. I have sat down at tables waiting for staff to give table a wipe down but they go and clear other tables nearby instead. I absolutely don't mind cleaning my own table but the staff seem unaware of what's happening around them. And don't get me started on the condition of the comfy chairs! Most seating is at tables for people to eat their meals, but there are two sofas at the end for those who just want coffee and cake. This sounds nice, but they are NOT comfy and they are covered with stains and dropped food. Disgusting. I sympathise with the supervisors, who say they do their best to clean them, but really, they should either get rid of them and put more tables out or, well actually, there is no Or. They should just get rid of them. They are a blight on the good name of Waitrose. Did I mention that I love the free coffee?

After shopping I stopped for a light lunch the coffee is very good and had a tasty toasted sandwich the queue moved along at a reasonable pace for a busy day when I was looking for a table I had to take one not cleared and moved the items to one side it was cleared eventually but I could see more tables in the same state so this problem needs attention otherwise it's ok

Staff and service were impeccable as usual but the chunky chips were skinny...and burnt. Trade descriptions violation?

Nice cafe in York Waitrose but there are never any clean tables. Everyone has to clear one before they sit down and they pile it on to a free table but the surfaces don't get wiped. Apart from this is a lovely cafe

Every time I go in this cafe the tables are dirty and full of pots. You have to clear them yourself and your table doesn't get cleaned. Not good.

I've visited here for breakfast several times, and the breakfast is very good, the service can be somewhat very slow!! Having to wait for tables when people grab them before you who havent been served is also very frustrating.

Stood nearly 5 minutes for a seat holding my tray of drinks. Meanwhile customers who had not joined the queue raced in and took vacant tables before I could get to them. Why can't they have a member of staff supervising the seating at busy times? After all there were 6/7 shelf stackers on 3 rows on the same day.

I do like sitting down and eavesdropping on gossip in this little cafe at the far end of Waitrose. The staff are always courteous and polite. The coffee is always good. It's busy sometimes and that means that one may need to queue for a short time. I would urge the complainers to get real. Treat others as you would expect to be treated yourself. I have visited here on numerous occasions and the service is faultless. But then I have observed less than diplomatic behaviour by other customers. The staff have my full sympathy. If only they could direct these customers to a competitor's cafe.

I don't know where some of these reviewers have been but it certainly wasn't the Waitrose cafe in the York store. The staff are always friendly, very pleasant and generally go out of their way to please. The coffee is amongst the best in town and the food is delicious. And what's with the complaints about the prices - you're getting the coffee for free!Downsides? Yes there are some... it's so popular that sometimes you have to queue. That's life people - get over it. The plates used for the Tartines are shaped oddly making cutting difficult - a feat not aided by the blunt knifes but I can put up with that.To sum up - definitely worth a detour or (a regular occurrence for us) a special trip.

I had an English breakfast in the york Cafe which I think cost about 8 quid. It consisted of:1 tomato2 mushrooms2 streaky (and skinny as hell) rashers of bacon1 eggtoast Aside from the fact it was a somewhat skimpy portion size, the staff were miserable as sin, and the resturant was dirty with tables laden with dirty plates.One of my main points of irritation was that when my breakfast was bought to me, the waitress balanced my plate of toast directly on top of my breakfast. Yuck! Whilst the breakfasts are served in shallow bowls, it just seemed so very unprofessional. BHS breakfasts every time in future!

Stopped in for a quick bite to eat before doing a spot of shopping. Ordered the lamb and chilli burger along with another side of chips. There was very little that was gluten free and vegetarian which limited the options. The chips were cut large but the portion size was a little small. The burger itself was nice but the experience as a whole was a little average considering the price.

On a sunny day we had a great dish without much waiting at a reasonable price (same as everywhere else or less). non-greasy fish with cunky chips and tartare sauce was great. The salad was well made but they did not have vegetarian soup. Given that waitrose now gives free coffee with mywaitrose card and newspaper with the shopping plus 2 hour free parking for us to finish our job at walmgate, it was a great experience.

Rude staff. Always wait an age to get served. Only one shot of coffee is waitrose policy in small drinks. :(

Called in for breakfast in one morning and it was quiet comfortable and tasted lovely. Cafe has free papers although we bought some on our way in and were asked by another customer if we had finished with them.Cafe and shop very quiet early in the morning and staff seemed surprised to see customers. The porridge was lovely and my husband enjoyed the full breakfast.

Food served in bowls. A cooked breakfast in a bowl???? Just wrong. This is overpriced nonsense, all of it. It seems expensive just for this very sake of it being waitrose. There are far too many fab places to eat to settle for this.

The Waitrose cafe in York is always a pleasure and really helps with the chore of food shopping. I always have a large coffee and a scone - one the ladies who serves there recognizes me now and knows what I want. The coffee is one of the best around. I did have breakfast there once with my husband, one ordinary full english and one vegetarian - both very good. Although I haven't let my self be tempted by their sandwiches - yet, they always look delicious and well filled - one day I will indulge!Overall worth a visit.

A cut above other supermarket cafes in York with food and drinks of a quality you would expect in an independent cafe or coffee house. The cakes and pastries are very good (with some of the best almond croissants I've found anywhere) and the calories are indicated on the labels. Coffees are good too but both regular and large seem to have the same quantities of espresso in them so the difference is that with more milk or hot water the larger sizes taste milder. Sandwiches, salads, soups and hot lunch items are decidedly better than you would expect from a supermarket (not the usual fried offerings with chips.) There is a good view of the city walls and snacking outside in summer is very pleasant despite the proximity of the inner ring road. The five star rating must be viewed in the context of a supermarket cafe. Compared with independent cafes it would rate only four.

Went for breakfast at Waitrose. Knew it would be more expensive than other places so expected a higher quality service and food. On the plus side; delicious granola and yoghurt. But then asked for a latte. I can honestly say it was amongst the worst in York. You know the type that comes in a milkshake glass , watery and luke warm, with no creamy body to it at all, and only mildly tasting of coffee. I had a veggie breakfast; it was dry, uninteresting and came with that fake bacon.YUK. Plate arrived dirty and had not been wiped round the edges. Husband had a crosissant which was served cold.. The cafe itself was also cold. Staff standing around talking. Papers provided though(good)Waitrose. You need to train your staff to make coffee and to serve food professionally, although you are 'just' a supermarket. Will be going up the road to Morrisons now, where they know what they are doing. And at a fraction of the £18 that we paid
