Never varied quality seems to be Thier watcchword

Felt quite pricey and we were told it was restaurant policy not to allow people to share dishes; which isn’t helpful when you can’t eat a huge portion and end up wasting food.

I have been going to this whaler since it opened. Always classed it as top fish & chip shop in in town. However recently I would say it’s the worst. In my opinion it has taken on more than it can chew. Telephone orders to pick up and now uber delivers. Unfortunately they haven’t the staff to cope with all this. Long queues at shop for all three venues. Also they don’t take much notice of what you request. The last three times I went I ordered two specials lightly cooked they were as black as hell and flat cold. Arguments in shop also between uber collections and phone orders as they weren’t ready. Would not recommend this place anymore

Quality seems to be dipping a bit recently. Chips are brown and greasy, fish soggy and greasy. Usually much better standard.

was ok nowt special, for the price I expected a bigger fish than what I got. peas cold, given a chipped glass for my drink. won't be in a rush back, local chippy is much nicer costs less and bigger portions

Not visited for some time due to no longer living in the area. However an opportunity arose to visit today. I must say the standard has not dropped at all. Haddock and Chips with all the trimmings really lovely. We were looked after really well by a very curious staff member and the restaurant itself was clean and tidy. Position sizes were good, and in my opinion value for money. If you enjoy Fish and Chips it's certainly worth a visit. Go and enjoy.

Seating area is really well set out, plenty of space and not sat on each other, service was faultless as was the fish n chips, desert was amazing and a very generous serving of sherry trifle. Recommended

After visiting for over 20 years plus, I will never step foot in the place again. Booked a table of 11 for my mother’s 86th Birthday this afternoon, everything lovely as usual like always until the bill arrived at the table and they now add a service charge. £20 for our table today. NEVER and I mean NEVER have they done this before. It was knocked off when i challenged them over it, but this also cost them a good tip. ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS Cheated staff out of tips now it’s law that staff retain all tips

Use Wetherby Whaler regularly at Wakefield, York and Guiseley, always clean, staff very good and food perfect.

Staff were ignorant, tried making small talk and very dismissive. Felt guilty been there and making her serve us. We were a part of 5.

This is fast becoming my fave place to eat! I've never been into fish and chips too much but here it is just so yummy that I find myself always fancying it 🙈

The battery was dark and very crispy tasted of oil, shortage on any sauces I presume as we had to ask for a small pot of tarte sauce, though better of asking for a lemon. Service was fine untill unbeknown to me my husband complained, I couldn't leave fat enough. shame as we were looking forward to it

Have visited Wetherby Whaler many times and their fish & chips have always been lovely, plus excellent service.

wetherby whaler wakefield is one of our regular eating places but we have noticed on our last few visits portion sizes are much smaller especially the seniors fish/chips you now see more of the plate underneath than the food on top will give them one more try in a few days time to see if there is any change but not very optimistic

The food was delicious, I don't often eat fish and chips but it was well worth the visit and the service was excellent, the staff were very welcoming, I would definitely go there again and I'm sure anything on the menu would be just as enjoyable

I had the pensioners menu and Bern a couple of times the last being just two weeks ago. Fresh battered haddock with mushy peas and perfectly cooked chips accompanied by a nice pot of tea .. what more could you want .. I recommend totally 👍

Called in with Mum, son and grandson, ate in the restaurant. Everyone well catered for, from kids menu to mum having a starter instead of a main. Friendly waiting staff. Lovely fish and chips, batter a bit darker and thicker than I normally like, so left a bit but still very good. Large portion of delicious chips. Lovely thick mushy peas. Super Fruity thick Curry sauce. Nice cuppa. Had fentimans Dandelion & Burdock, not as nice as a can of Ben Shaw's. Defo go back.

Not a good experience, food quality poor, greasy and fish tasteless. Expensive for what we got. Service lacklustre, I did make a complaint about an item this was met with disinterest, with a response of "oh". Will not be going again.

Disappointing experience tonight at the take away. Ordered over the phone as the app wasn’t working and despite the food sitting obviously ready in the cabinet when we arrived; they took my money and then proceeded to serve customers that had come in behind me before passing me my food. Subsequently it wasn’t as nice as usual.

Fancied some tasty fish so gave it a try for the big fish for£12 with peas and curry and home made tartare sauce. It was a big piece of fish easily feed two as it was the £12 pound fish ,too of the line The batter was dark and slight gummy which is what I like. But it doesn't feel like the traditional crispy light batter many are used to. The peas were standard and the curry sauce also. The home made tartare sauce just tasted like cream whereas I like it popping with vinagary strong flavours. Chips were decent skin on fries . Id try it again but theres plenty of other places to try but you can't go wrong with this place .

Disappointing large haddock. Batter was overcooked and the fish was very greasy overall not good. Chips were fine and the mushy peas OK. Service was good with staff friendly and personable.

On entry we was told that we should have booked and that we was very lucky to be seated! because we had 6 of our residents from an elderly care home but whilst been here we’ve had the whole room to ourselves!! Amazing that when there so so busy! The guy who had taken our order was really rude has we wanted just the kids smaller portions has our residents only have a small appetite they was happy to do this until we said us has carers wasn’t eating he changed his mind and said no no I can’t do that we wouldn’t make any kind of profit so we’d no choice but to take the 3 course senior meal or leave which obviously we couldn’t get our residents back on our bus to then find somewhere else it was very disappointing has we was left to decide he went and we could clearly see he was telling another member of staff about the situation which is also very rude we will not be going back again

I go to both the resteraunt and the take away mostly weekly to each. On this occasion 10/7/24 at the take away. I would like to say that it is very rare this happens with fish. My wife complained to me about the taste of her gf lightly battered fish. When I looked her batter was not cooked through and this made me look at mine which wasn't very white and was a bit undercooked although I ate it. My wife ate about half of hers and I finished the fish breaking the batter away. I didn't go and complain because of what she had eaten and it was busy. It is one of my popular places but it won't be the first time I have complained in front of a full take away. GF batter seems to vary but batter should be cooked I believe. Don't like complaining but had it been in the resteraunt i would have told the waiter. Hope the catch and frying is better on Friday when I go. By the way I will take photos next time

The food is always good. Think the waitresses are programmed to ask questions and not wait for answers. We were presented with our bill without asking if we would like anything else, not really good customer service.

OMG ....ordered the large fish and chips with mushy peas it was ginormous ,tasted amazing,didn't eat for the rest of the day ....

The Wetherby Whaler is probably one of the best fish and chip restaurants I've been to, well organised and the staff of are very helpful throughout the meal including entering the establishment. I was in a party of eight, some had got there before me so they didn't have to wait outside or in the reception and were already seated. The menu is extensive offering a separate gluten free menu too, the condiments are free. I had the seniors menu which was 3 courses and a drink (tea, coffee or soft drink) for £14.25. The restaurant is light bright and airy with a take away attached to the main building and there is a sizeable car park. It's easy to find just off the A636 going into Wakefield. I have been here four now and it's a great meeting and socialising place for family and friends. If you're in the area or live nearby it's well worth visiting if you want very good quality food 👍👍👍

Excellent venue at reasonable prices. Thought the haddock was particularly good. Would recommend this venue. Pleasant and friendly staff, short waiting time after ordering.

Nice looking place, shame there was flies everywhere. They only did haddock, which in my opinionis disgusting. Quite expensive for food and asked for a tea and got two, don't know why. My wife had battered sausage and chips and said it was nice, but for the price, it ought to be. Sprayed disinfectant on the table at the side of us spraying residue all over our table. Won't be going back.

Monday 27/5/24 approximately 8pm I tried to order from the takeaway shop A female member of staff walked straight along the counter and ignored me There was a male member of staff talking to a female member of staff who turned around to me and said “sorry love” turned her back on me and carried on talking I gave up and walked out Nobody called out and asked me why I think this is poor service

Can’t fault it. There are many fish and chip restaurants in the area, but this is my go-to. Loads of parking and no loss in quality from a ‘chain’.

We have been to our favourite fish and chips restaurant today. Found out they have a new item on the menu it's was a fish with scampi and chips on the same plate it was beautifully presented and as always the taste was the best in the area. Always recomed here to our friends new and old as well as our family members. Keep up the good work 10 out of 10 once again.

Visited here on many occasions both to sit in the restaurant and take away The restaurant food always lovely The last two occasions at the take away the fish and the fish cake had far too much batter on it - in fact the fish cake yesterday was thrown away it was disgusting / so disappointed will give it a miss

Food is really nice, all be it a little pricey, when food came out I asked for a couple of slices of bread, which I never received. But when I went to pay the bill, we'd been charged for them,the women i paid was helpful and removed the items

The first weekend of sunshine for about 6 months and after a walk with the dog around Sandal Castle we finished off the afternoon at the Wetherby Whaler. Fantastic service from the staff who were really cheerful, helpful and polite. The food itself is magnificent and you do get your money’s worth in both quality and quantity. I went for haddock, chips peas and curry sauce. The fish batter was golden and crispy and the fish melted in your mouth. The chips were piping hot and fluffy in the middle and the peas were really tasty as was the chip shop style curry sauce. I love rich tasting food and both the peas and curry had plenty of flavour. I’m not a food connoisseur but ‘ I know what I like!’ Basically, I think they’re the best you can get for really tasty fish and chips, with all the sides: that’s another thing. Their menu is expansive so there’s plenty to choose from.

Well to say ignorant is an understatement, just stood there for 10 mins in an empty place and no one said anything just kept talking to each other. I'm assuming they don't have the manners to say we will be with you in a minute or anythi NG along these lines, never ever will I waste my time in this dirty looking place.

Had a great meal at the weatherby whaler. The staff were so.welcoming and friendly, especially Michael who is a legend!!! The food was delicious and so fresh. Thanks for a great Yorkshire experience

Good fish and chips, takeaway is very busy. If you have fish and chips, service is fast as they are churning them out. Other items are cooked to order, so a bit slower. It’s so big they can manage big orders and the big queue moves very quickly. Very fresh and hot. Big car park.

I would like to thank Janet who had taken the time out to speak to me one to one as I have a disability, hard of hearing, wearing a cochlear implant. She made feel welcome and met my needs, she taken our order with a smile and with ease. I will come back just to be serve by Janet. Lovely food and reasonable price too.

Will never step foot over these premises again. Rude, obnoxious and offensive member of staff did not give us a "Yorkshire welcome". No atmosphere, decor unkempt and scruffy, portions tiny and poorly presented and way overpriced. Avoid at all costs. Also, they don't answer the phone so overall DO NOT RECOMMEND

Not good. Just got kids fish bite meal and a portion of chips. Chips looked like they were barely cooked,. They were white and luke warm. Went straight in the bin.

Proper fish and chips for proper folk 👌 Took my mum here for her birthday and it's probably the best fish and chips I've had for a very long time, the batter was like glass, crisp and full of flavour. The fish was perfectly cooked also.

Visited with my elderly mum. The staff couldn't have been more helpful, finding us a suitable table, making menu suggestions and assisting us when leaving. The manager even stood in the disabled spot we'd used to enable us to drive right up to the door and then exit through the parking space.

Took my lovely mum on Saturday , for an early Mother’s Day treat, we love this place. I had gluten free scampi which was amazing either way new potatoes and mushy peas.mum had lightly battered plaice either chips and mushy peas. Our starter was a homemade soup which was very tasty. All the food is very hot when served, the service is wonderful and it is always lovely to see Caroline who makes sure everything runs smoothly. Thank you to all for making our afternoon a special one as always. Maria.

Ordered scamp and chips i paid for it had to leave without it after waiting thirteen minutes, which ate into my lunch time (no pun intended) I wasn't informed of any time scale otherwise I'd of ordered online.

Food was nice but the guy behind the counter was very very rude to my mum he was lucky i had my kids with me. I took my mum for mothers day as it's usually her fave but we will never go here again after being treated lime that. Absolutely fuming

Mums 80th birthday. Came to wetherthby whaler for mums birthday treat. Fish wasn't as chunky as the portions we've eaten before at the whaler. Was a bit watery. Would recommend the wetherby whaler for its service.
