Wetherby Whaler in Wakefield

Visited here on many occasions both to sit in the restaurant and take away The restaurant food always lovely The last two occasions at the take away the fish and the fish cake had far too much batter on it - in fact the fish cake yesterday was thrown away it was disgusting / so disappointed will give it a miss

The first weekend of sunshine for about 6 months and after a walk with the dog around Sandal Castle we finished off the afternoon at the Wetherby Whaler. Fantastic service from the staff who were really cheerful, helpful and polite. The food itself is magnificent and you do get your money’s worth in both quality and quantity. I went for haddock, chips peas and curry sauce. The fish batter was golden and crispy and the fish melted in your mouth. The chips were piping hot and fluffy in the middle and the peas were really tasty as was the chip shop style curry sauce. I love rich tasting food and both the peas and curry had plenty of flavour. I’m not a food connoisseur but ‘ I know what I like!’ Basically, I think they’re the best you can get for really tasty fish and chips, with all the sides: that’s another thing. Their menu is expansive so there’s plenty to choose from.

Well to say ignorant is an understatement, just stood there for 10 mins in an empty place and no one said anything just kept talking to each other. I'm assuming they don't have the manners to say we will be with you in a minute or anythi NG along these lines, never ever will I waste my time in this dirty looking place.

Had a great meal at the weatherby whaler. The staff were so.welcoming and friendly, especially Michael who is a legend!!! The food was delicious and so fresh. Thanks for a great Yorkshire experience

Good fish and chips, takeaway is very busy. If you have fish and chips, service is fast as they are churning them out. Other items are cooked to order, so a bit slower. It’s so big they can manage big orders and the big queue moves very quickly. Very fresh and hot. Big car park.

I would like to thank Janet who had taken the time out to speak to me one to one as I have a disability, hard of hearing, wearing a cochlear implant. She made feel welcome and met my needs, she taken our order with a smile and with ease. I will come back just to be serve by Janet. Lovely food and reasonable price too.

Will never step foot over these premises again. Rude, obnoxious and offensive member of staff did not give us a "Yorkshire welcome". No atmosphere, decor unkempt and scruffy, portions tiny and poorly presented and way overpriced. Avoid at all costs. Also, they don't answer the phone so overall DO NOT RECOMMEND

Very disappointing. Small portions and prices have increased since I last called. Won't be visiting this place again.

Not good. Just got kids fish bite meal and a portion of chips. Chips looked like they were barely cooked,. They were white and luke warm. Went straight in the bin.

Proper fish and chips for proper folk 👌 Took my mum here for her birthday and it's probably the best fish and chips I've had for a very long time, the batter was like glass, crisp and full of flavour. The fish was perfectly cooked also.

Took dad today for lunch Very friendly staff, excellent fish & chips Dad had pensioners special which was great value Used to take mum here before we sadly lost her last year, lovely memories

Visited with my elderly mum. The staff couldn't have been more helpful, finding us a suitable table, making menu suggestions and assisting us when leaving. The manager even stood in the disabled spot we'd used to enable us to drive right up to the door and then exit through the parking space.

Took my lovely mum on Saturday , for an early Mother’s Day treat, we love this place. I had gluten free scampi which was amazing either way new potatoes and mushy peas.mum had lightly battered plaice either chips and mushy peas. Our starter was a homemade soup which was very tasty. All the food is very hot when served, the service is wonderful and it is always lovely to see Caroline who makes sure everything runs smoothly. Ordered scamp and chips i paid for it had to leave without it after waiting thirteen minutes, which ate into my lunch time (no pun intended) I wasn't informed of any time scale otherwise I'd of ordered online.

Good quality fish and chips, quite expensive.

Food was nice but the guy behind the counter was very very rude to my mum he was lucky i had my kids with me. I took my mum for mothers day as it's usually her fave but we will never go here again after being treated lime that. Absolutely fuming

We ordered food to collect for dinner tonight. The fish was lovely, but the chips were inedible. Don't know where they sourced their potatoes, but the quality was very poor.

Mums 80th birthday. Came to wetherthby whaler for mums birthday treat. Fish wasn't as chunky as the portions we've eaten before at the whaler. Was a bit watery. Would recommend the wetherby whaler for its service.

Was quite rushed. Only been seated for 5mins and asking what we wanted. Food was OK. For the price it's a treat to go.

The food was good, as expected. However, where is the personality of the staff? A warm greeting or a slightly less patronising tone of voice from the serving staff? The greeting comprised a male raising his eyebrows in our direction and then being shown to a table. No ‘Good evening’ and a smile, or anything close. The waitress had all the charm of a pre-recorded voice. Yes, I know we were probably the 500th table she’d served today, but amongst her many roles, her job is to make customers feel valued. We didn’t.

Nice fish and chips tad expensive

The fish and chips were excellent, probably the best we have had in years. The service by the staff was top notch, and also the surroundings was very pleasant. We will definitely go again.

What a fantastic fish and chip shop this is. The food is great, but for me it’s the service and atmosphere! Nothing is too much trouble. A member of staff called Janet is absolutely fantastic with my young son, always going above and beyond! I’m a very satisfied customer and will continue frequenting, strongly recommend others do the same! Well done! 👍

Lovely food, cooked well. Staff are lovely too. Decor is a bit at odds with itself, having whales on the carpets but prints of cows on the wall but the seating is comfortable and the portions decent. Does a good deal - mains come with chips and Yorkshire tea (or cordial or fruit tea - even decaf!).

It was a year since we last went here been visiting the restaurant and takeaway for years while living in the area Waited a couple of minutes to be seated a young lad came up to us no eye contact and said follow me took us over to a table right next to the kitchen door and said sit here his rude attitude was awful !! The food was very good however the insufficient young lad forgot peas and bread

My second time here. Food was fresh this time, was v excited compared to the last time to say the least. But I conclude I had much much better fish and chips i.e Kingfishers & Chu Fish and Chips. Very firm fish and hard chips here, and although Yorkshire people like beef dripping I don’t really taste much of a difference; except it leaving a greasy film on my fingers and mouth. 5.5/10

Full gluten free menu lovely fish and chips. Shame I couldn't have any curry. Furniture is a little outdated but it goes with the theme and reminds me of my grandparents

Wetherby Whaler in Wetherby is very good. It's a while since we went to the one on Denby Dale Road, Wakefield. What has happened? The chips were hard and overcooked, and the fish was slimy inside the batter, and seemed to have been warmedup/kept warm. Service was excellent and so was the cup of tea. I'll try the Whaler on Leeds Road next timel

Go glueton free every time with fish n chips

Not been here in a while but it was very good, exelent haddock. What more is there to say. What more is there to say

Visited on the Saturday evening before Christmas. When we arrived it was about two thirds full. However, we had to wait around 20 minutes for someone to take our order whilst staff prioritised cleaning tables! There was a further 30 minute wait for our food to arrive. The waitress came to apologise after about 20 minutes and said there was a delay because they were dealing with Christmas parties first. That said, a couple who had arrived after us received their food about 10 minutes before us. This was a shame because once we did finally receive our food, it was lovely and the staff were very friendly, so in the end we had an enjoyable meal.

Delicious fish and chips. I’m coeliac and dairy intolerant and their NG batter (on the haddock) was so nice. They were so careful preparing it and keeping it separate. They also label some gf salt and vinegar which they keep under the counter as the salt and vinegar out on the counter could get contaminated. We’re new to the area so will be visiting again soon.

We had a fabulous meal for a group of 21 people. The service was excellent. Our drinks and meals were delivered to the table in a timely manner and were scrumptious. Parking is always easy and close to the door for those with accessibility needs. The staff are friendly and very helpful. Our family meet up there every year and we couldn't find a better place to look after us.

I am gluten free and I was able to eat gluten free fish and chips I didn't feel like I was and inconvenience and I will definitely be back as I could have starter , main and even dessert which is amazing

Have travelled far and wide In my quest for good Gluten Free Fish + chips, and in my very fussy particular opinion, Wetherby Whaler does it best. Always get a lovely piece of Haddock with light batter. Bit puzzled why the Wakefield branch charges different prices though. Also confused over the Pudsey staff telling me they need to put my salt + vinegar on my food. Really? I've only eaten in the restaurant once, for an elderly parents birthday lunch. Lovely service at Pudsey branch, but not for me, I like to eat them outside with my fingers. 👌 always good !

Delicious haddock and chips and excellent service.

From the take away side it seemed to take ages waiting for a battered sausage. Fish was good, the chips were very dry. Very disappointing this time as it used to be very pleasant. I would have expected better from an outlet with reputation.

Only "plaice to go" if you're accompanied by someone who needs a gluten free fish. Coeliacs take note, no problems here with battered fish and what's more it's delicious! Staff here are really helpful and understanding too. Best fish and chips around here.

I had the pensioners meal at £15.50 which was a three course meal and was exceptional value. It was not cut down in any way - as pensioner's meals tend to be.

My mum who is 95 with various health issues fancied fish and chips! Long story short we went and I parked up to get a take away as mum carnt get out the car. The young lady behind the counter was so caring when I explained I didn’t want to wait too long due to mums health on her own. She very kindly took my order, said she would split bewtween 2 boxes so mum wouldn’t be made to feel any different , asked where I was parked and told me to go bs k to the car and she would find me and bring the food out to us when cooked, I really couldn’t thank her enough and she certainly went behind and above We definately return the young lady restored my faith in excellent customer service when I returned home I did ring the manger to pass on on thanks.

No bread or tea included with meal, my little girl can't eat a full serving so requested a child's meal, we weren't allowed as she is over 12 years old, I'll share my meal with her, that's not allowed either, not great 👎

Air con on so food gets cold easy. Took my 80yr old mum for tea, you have to order a full set up. Wanted a sml meal for mum, don't go there. Very expensive for what it is and they don't supply to customers needs. Pretty poor for a big company.

5 of us arrived (didn't book) this seemed to put the staff out, one lady found us a table, another lady came and told us we couldn't sit there it was booked, they moved us again, putting 2 tables together, one table higher than the other. Didn't feel very welcome at that point, and the whole time we were there, no one arrived at any of the other free tables. The girl that served us was nice enough but didn't smile, wasn't offered any sides, no coleslaw on the plate as there was last time we came , fish was delicious, chips dry and bland, we all left our chips, was disappointed today no welcome poor atmosphere, no smiles, hence no tip. Previous experiences had been much better and happier staff

A little expensive but the food was good and you get what you pay for however, if I have a fault at all the waiting staff could do with a course addressing welcoming customers and all need to be taught how to smile!! All gloomy faces and not a smile in sight

I've recently been here for a meal with my dad who is in his 90s and other family. Easy to find off Denby dale road opposite the tip. Easy and level car park and parking Level walking to the door. Friendly and efficient staff showing us to the table The food was delicious and excellent Portions were great and the price was very reasonable Loved the desert as well Especially mine. I love lots of custard 🍮 I follow Wetherby whaler on my Instagram account jafthegardener as it doesn't matter which venue I go to the quality is great. Definitely 5 stars from me and my family We really enjoyed it and will be back soon It was quite busy and this is a great indicator of how good it is ❤️❤️

Wetherby Whaler, everyone locally knows they are a great fish and chips shop. Today I just couldn't believe they served me TINNED MUSHY PEAS, are you guys seriously needing to cut corners that you are now serving years who have been coming for years things...

Nice Chinese curry sauce never disappoints

Been coming here for a number of years but never again, fish all batter and the actual fish was grey. Now the chips or should I say crisps they were that thin the fork would not even hold one, I did complain about them only to have shoulders shrugged and walked off. Very bad service.

I had already had a gluten free take away the week before with no problems. However even after expressing my gluten intolerance in the restaurant I thought I could safely order from the gluten free menu. I was subsequently glutened and suffered for it and...

Beautiful fish and chips.. Just puzzled as to why when your driving round and in circles to get a parking space when there's a local walking group abandoning their cars in car park and we couldn't get in.. Saw lots of people just drive away because they couldn't get a parking space.. Whilst I was waiting there must have been over 10 vehicles parking up with people getting out with walking attire on not even going into the restaurant or take away

As is always said you get what you pay for and it was certainly worth the money

Very busy (and deservedly so) fish and chip restaurant in a small retail park on the edge of the city. Unfortunately, a bit too far to walk from the city centre but worth driving to when the urge for fish and chips takes you.

Just called for fish and chips and were the worst we have had for ages. Full of fat, mushy fish and very small portions. For such a well known chippy we would expect better! Carlton Lane chippy at cas and codfather in wakey beat it hands down.
