Mother Hubbard's in Wakefield

I bought a tray of chips at 8pm on Sunday. They were tepid, anaemic, undercooked and tasted heavily of oil. I threw them away. I won't be returning.

Called in today for fish and chips and we were more than happy. Nice crispy batter and fish was lovely. Chips were chunky and not at all greasy. The chap who served us was very chatty and friendly. Would definitely recommend

why do mother Hubbard's Wakefield only accept cash only

Tried a Mother Hubbard's for the first time and honestly can't remember the last time I had such a delicious fish and chip dinner. I bought a standard haddock and chips with a curry sauce for £9. Massive portion for the price, I was stuffed afterwards! The fish was delicious and nicely battered, the chips were massive and chunky. The curry sauce was a lovely topper. The young, blonde lady who served me was very polite and professional. Very clean and freshly presented seating area. Brilliant stuff. I'll definitely be buying again.

10/10 experience everytime. Been here well over 10 times now, and it's great. Everything is cooked to order so do expect a 5-10 minute wait for food. Always comes out hot though. Curry sauce is excellent. Service is good, and the staff are great here. Cash only mind you, so visit the cash machine beforehand.

Not bad always consistent large portions

Never had fish chips mushy peas like it, this will never again happen, mushy peas sloppy watery £12 for a large portion more like kids size meal, should be ashamed to serve this

Cold chips, so so fish. Vastly overpriced for what it is, very disappointing and not sure how it was ever voted the best in Wakefield. Need to sort out their card machine, cash only is a pain.

Pleasant takeaway fish and chip shop with a small seated area with about half a dozen tables. Good fish and chips. A great pensioners meal deal offers small fish and chips, peas, bread and butter and cup of tea for less than £6

Yesterday I wented to eat fish and chips so I went to mother hubbards in Wakefield £7.95 fish and chips what can I say but very beautiful price it's a good job that I didn't get anything else because my stomach was full the best fish and chips shop in Yorkshire for my birthday present my son is going to take me out for lunch again

Called in to try the large haddock I eventually ordered only to be told I was unable to use my card for payment CASH ONLY. The place looked grubby not a person inside no queue it is clear this place is poor quality. I went to the Wetherby whaler down the road great atmosphere the air filled with the small of cooking fish and chips and could use my card. This branch of Mother Hubbard is harming the brand

I noticed a few months ago that they started 2 versions of fish&chips; one Halal and one non-Halal. The Halal version being slightly expensive than the other. The problem was not the price, it was the fact that halal and non-halal food being cooked side by side. I felt uncomfortable at this and never went back.

Having finished work went here as a treat I should have noticed something was wrong when I could park right outside and no one was in the shop or seating area. I ordered and was told abruptly it's CASH ONLY. Although I did have cash in my car having now looked around the premises I decided not to buy anything here I was totally unimpressed clearly it was been run by kids and looked un cared for. I walked out and went to the Wetherby whaler a total difference in appearance and staff. Please don't waste your cash here.

Lovely fish and chips Friendly staff

The first time I went here everything was cooked perfectly and I couldn’t fault it at all, but the second time the chips were pale and undercooked, the fish was oily and the batter soggy. This may have been caused due to them being busier the second time around, but the food quality still shouldn’t have suffered so much because of that.

Very good fish and chips and value for money. Would definitely get fish and chips from there again.

Excellent service from a lovely young lady at lunchtime. Told me about loyalty scheme and was a pleasure to chat to. Food was excellent value, only comment is chips could be crisper but tasted good

Single use plastic cutlery and no recycling facilities. Won’t be returning for those reasons.

Don’t bother if you want decent fish and chips! Went in expecting what you would get at other Mother Hubbards but massively disappointed, undercooked, small and not fresh fish, pulled it apart and smelt vile, took it to the counter and demanded refund, drove 18 miles to the Bradford flagship branch and got the best fish and chips I’ve had! This place needs to sort itself out! See photos below first from Wakefield and second from Bradford, absolutely no comparison……

Lovely modern shop front and inside. Nice staff Fish was brilliant, portion size was good. Chips were average No out front parking but plenty of side roads

Small portion anemic chips...like another 30 seconds less in the fryer and they could probably regrow potatoes with them, for the price they are charging I'd expect something better... And the fish had never seen flaky...it may have been a fish bulking up on protein before it was killed. Redeeming features it was hot and the fish had crispy batter. Goes to show that high prices does not always mean high quality

Many many thanks to the staff at Mother Hubbards Thursday evening 6.4.23. After visiting a local restaurant and waiting so long for food we walked out and left without paying. The staff at Mother Hubbards went above and beyond the usual service. Proving excellent fish and chips, and a more than friendly service. Unfortunately I didn't get names but you were both stars and provided an excellent finish to an evening that was heading down hill very fast. THANK YOU BOTH VERY MUCH

I've been to a few different Mother Hubbards now, but have been to the wakefield one more than any others. The staff are always really friendly, patient whilst I'm taking ages to decide and always really helpful. The lady who works there is really nice. Their fish and chips are the best I've had on the mainland (I'm from an island where fish is very fresh) - it has always tasted fresh and beautifully cooked, the batter is fantastic and the fish is big and meaty. They are more expensive than I remember fish and chip shops being, I don't think fish and chip shops are a budget option anymore, but at least with Mother Hubbards you get good quality for your money. I've had fish and chips from the Barnsley Mother Hubbards too, it's the same good quality and good service. And I've had from the Leeds one too, it was a bit of a dive in comparison, but it is in Harehills so what can you expect. The staff were distracted, arguing on their phone or with colleagues in the back, took ages to be served, felt unsafe inside and outside the shop to be honest, and the quality was not Mother Hubbards that I know in Wakey or in the new Barnsley one. It was a while ago since I was in the Harehills one though so maybe its changed.

Popped over at tea time. Chap had just fried the fish, the batter was lovely and crispy with chunks of fish, chips pipping hot and the 'must have' mushy peas were spot on (not too sweet0. Washed down with a cold can of coke. You can't beat it.

Chips turn to plastic when they cool down dew to oil they use but other food is a1

Great place to eat so clean and staff are fabulous, can't beat the food so fresh and lovely. Would definitely come back it's a regular place of ours. Great for families and tea time xx

Fish covered in thick batter, chips made from potatoes with lots of black bits, it’s hard to make good quality Fish and Chips form poor quality ingredients. My wife and I were not impressed.

Fish was beautiful, cooked to perfection. Jumbo fish n chips really is jumbo lol. Curry sauce was nice, scallops were nice too.

Always go for the largest portion of fish & chips ....the jumbo one ! It will feed a family of 3/4 .no problem and is then fantastic value for money.

Come here pretty often don't buy much at a time because the portions are huge (love that!). Quality and quantity from here. Also the staff are always lovely, very welcoming. I think it's nice to have places you genuinely enjoy going back to because of great experiences. Thank you!

Wow Wakefield beach really letting the name down fish just looked like it was thrown in the box didn’t taste fresh either normally go to batley branch and that one is spot on what a shame here isn’t

Was hesitant in returning after they had changed the fish in lockdown but confirmed that indeed it was haddock! Fish was absolutely amazing... steaming hot, crispy,fresh! With a few chips thrown in ...lushhh

Poor is being generous chips hard bits some tasted raw, some discolored green, ketchup / mayo sauces have to be purchased separately, Can of pop room temperature fridge isn't switched on, Fish was okay but alot of batter less fish but chips were not good at all. I wouldn't come back not sure what the fuss is about not worth the money at all

I was passing through town coming from Manchester thought to give this place a try I was disappointed with the quality of the food chips were hard for the price portion was to small and expensive. Chicken and mushroom pie was straight out of the freezer job very bland no taste nor favour whatsoever. No selection of drinks at all you would expect for the price tag at least have the decency to provide some sauce but no 25p each on top of that only 1 piece of tissue given unbelievable shocking behaviour for tax paying law obiding citizens going through the cost of living crisis I certainly expected better. Not worth the time or hassle I would highly recommend nobody to eat from this place. Kind regards Noman

Your delivery driver spent 10mins walking round the streets looking lost. All the houses and flats have numbers on the doors too so maybe the driver can’t read numbers well. We eventually had to go out and physically take our food off him. The idiot!

High quality Fish and chips, always fresh, always generous portions, if a piece is smallish, you get 2 pieces Have options for kids like chicken nuggets. Very friendly owners! Highly recommend!

Looked at recommendations for fish and chips and saw this was a good choice - it really is the best choice! We have been to a few places in Wakefield and this really does take first place! Fresh food, quick service and delicious 😋 🤤 This place is out of the way for us but totally worth it! Thanks

Went into mother Hubbard's as I hadn't been in for a while got a large chips as I was hungry and what a waste of money that turned out to be it was just after 12 and I don't know how long the chips had been out of the fryer but they were hard round edges and had no colour threw them away won't be going back

If I could give zero stars I would. They do not use beef dripping so they are not proper Yorkshire fish and chips. The fish and chips were flavourless and made me feel sick. I paid a premium price and had to throw them away as I couldn’t eat them. George A Greens or Kingfishers are by far superior. Do not waste your money here.

I ordered a special for delivery and my order arrived a lot quicker than I expected so no complaints there. When I opened the box what I saw was not very special indeed. I was a the kingfisher earlier in the week and had a standard fish and there was no difference in size. This fish was quite tasteless, mushy and watery unlike the kingfisher so over £12 for fish and peas I thinkI could have eaten out for this price and enjoyed it more. It'll be a long time before I'll consider ordering again.

Great fish and chips and great staff.

Fish and chips were delicious, prices are a little premium but very happy with overall quality of the food. Added extra salt and vinegar as requested via uber eats and the curry sauces was tasty along with the pie. Pleased customer.

We visiting mother hubbards on Horbury Road today with family. My grandparents, my partner and my little boy. My grandparents opted for the OAP special which came with a drink, bread and side, they where delighted with the food and the value for money. Me and my partner went with the regular fish and chips, the batter was beautiful and the fish was even better. My little boy had the fish bites meal which again he loved and it was great value so all in all we loved our visit and we will be back. Also the lady serving was very polite and attentive.

Can'treally go wrong here. Clean restaurant. Excellent food. Fast service. Easy parking. We ate in and had fun looking at the newspaper articles that make up the wallpaper in the restaurant as well as the historical photos of Wakefield. Thank you.

Ordered chips very dry, hard bits, not friendly welcome, not as good as your local chippie ordered folk to eat not as good chippie, chips bad quality in Wakefield Mother Hubards see for yourself, shames other mother hubbard's but the only thing postive is the trays served with dry, hard chips were recyable and where recycled by Me
