Stayed here on the night of the 3rd October! Had dinner and breakfast the following morning. We both had the steak, tasted amazing. Breakfast the following morning was also a success. Our dog joined us in the mezzanine area, which was great. Hotel is very popular, would recommend booking for dinner and breakfast as also very popular. Look forward to eating again at this restaurant. Also had drinks in the bar, lovely area with a roaring fire.

We had high expectations for the food given all the hype about the quality of the produce. The steak my partner had and the fish I had was excellent. Unfortunately the chips were undercooked, soggy and pale. Frankly inedible. We didn’t want to return the food for fear of the steak and fish being ruined. However, a better supply of chips could have been provided to us, as a gesture of goodwill. I can’t believe any self-respecting chef would serve such poor quality chips. Made even worse was the attitude presented when we raised this. The waitress fed back our disappointment to the chef and in her reply to us which was “I did raise it with the chef but….” we took this that the chef chose to completely dismiss and disregard our feedback. It was a shame because we were otherwise so happy with our overnight stay at the Westmorland Hotel and this put a dampener on it. Message to chef: listen and do better.

Some wonderful food, mainly locally sourced, cooked to perfection. Whilst not a wide selection, it is perfect for those spending a night in the hotel on route to somewhere else. My steak was really well cooked and very tender. We also had breakfast int he restaurant as part of our stay and that was delicious and set one up for the day. All the staff are very polite and attentive. The time slots make sure that they do not overload the front of house or kitchen teams so it is well worth going at the right time.

Perfect if you're booked in and the restaurant seemed full in the evening. The menu is short but well balanced with elements linked to the associated farms. All the elements of each dish were well thought through and nicely presented. Breakfast was vrey good again with local produce.

When ordering our vegetarian order we found out THAT ALL THEIR FRIED FOOD WAS COOKED IN THE SAME OIL AS THE FISH and as was we pointed out to the seemingly uninterested manager and fuming manager that this is not written on the menu to warn all vegans and vegetarians that their chips, sweet potato fries or anything that needed to be fried were in fact not the real real deal The manager was rude and clearly couldn't be bothered and in fact was so rude that he tried desperately to make us feel uncomfortable after complaining which didn't succeed as we just laughed because he reminded us so much of Basil Fawlty from Fawlty towers, but that aside this is a very serious matter indeed and needs to be addressed URGENTLY!!!!!

My wife and I have stayed at the Tebay Services Hotel Westmorland quite a few times over the past few years as we travel to Scotland a lot and the hotel is an excellent base to break our journey up north. We haven't dined in the hotel restaurant for quite a while but we did so this evening. It was immediately obvious that the menu had changed and there were some interesting items on it. I'm assuming that they have recruited a new, or fairly new team of chefs and after all it is the chefs that are responsible for enhancing the reputation of a restaurant by providing diners with a good culinary experience. In the case of the meal we had for starters we had the home made bread dipped in oil and balsamic vinegar and olives which was lovely. The olives were quite juicy and wholesome. For the main course my wife had the homemade beefburger with chips which she said was lovely. I had the sirloin steak with chips, mushrooms and chips and oh boy it was superbly delicious and cooked just to my liking. In both cases the beef is locally produced of course. It has been a very long time indeed since I tasted aged steak this good. For dessert in my case this was followed by a cold rice pudding with sorbet and my wife had a delicious selection of sorbets. I have to say that this was one of the nicest meals I have had anywhere in the UK in quite some time. The hotel itself is very comfortable and places sustainability at the very core of it's ethos and it utilises a lot of 'Fairtrade' products. The shop in the adjoining Tebay services is quite extraordinary offering a huge selection of fine quality locally produced foodstuff and much more besides. During your travels If you are looking to break your journey to Scotland then I highly recommend the Tebay Services Hotel and restaurant.

We have stayed at the Westmorland Hotel on several occasions and have always enjoyed our stays but this time we felt the restaurant had excelled itself. Our starters were elegant and imaginative - my husband particularly enjoyed both the concept and the taste of his home-made corned beef. When it comes to main courses, the local lamb is not to be missed and this rack came with the crispiest of fat. Like other reviewers, I must mention the beds here - possibly the most comfortable you will ever sleep on!

Just stayed for six nights at this lovely hotel . We occupied room 61 on the first floor with views from Tebay on up towards Shap. Every morning produced a different atmospheric scene from our windows. In our opinion, this is one of the best rooms and needs to be booked over the phone as it cannot be booked on line. The bed is very comfortable and the decoration relaxing and exudes a 'warm' atmosphere. It has a separate shower cubicle as well as a bath with rain shower in.The staff were very friendly and helpful as usual. James was managing when we arrived and looked after us very well. The restaurant staff, many have been there for years, are very helpful and provide an excellent service. The food is also a pleasure to eat. Breakfast offers a large variety of food and the evening meals offered are of a very good standard. You can ask for changes to the course you fancy if it makes it more to your liking. The hotel can cater for dogs in the ground floor rooms. No smell of previous canine occupants when we have used these rooms. Great base to visit surrounding places of interest.

We chose the Westmorland Hotel as our over-night stop on the way to Scotland, as they accepted dogs. On arrival we were asked if we'd be dining in with them that night, so I asked if that meant dogs were allowed in specified areas of the hotel. Apparently, not. You either had to put them in the car, or have your evening meal in isolation in the bedroom (at an extra cost). I'm well aware that dogs aren't everyone's cup of tea, but I'm getting more and more frustrated at the inconsistency of establishments, who'd have you believe that "...it's the hygiene law..." - It's NOT - that applies to kitchens or food preparation areas only, and since part of the dining room floor was bare boards, it seemed a shame not to utilise that space. We therefore ate out at a very accommodating pub in Shap, which had no problems with dogs, which meant lost custom to the Westmorland, who despite this attitude, still provide bowls and dog treats in the bedrooms, which we thought was a great touch.

We have always been lovers of The Farm Shop Motorway Service Areas, having used both the Tebay ones and the more recent ones on the M5 in Gloucestershire. On a recent trip back from Scotland we decided to break the journey and stay at the Westmoorland Hotel just off the M6 Motorway in Cumbria. We were pleasantly surprised with the Hotel.Set in beautiful surroundings, by the quietness of the nearby Motorway. A warm welcome awaited us and we were shown to a lovely bedroom with a good sized bed. Most of the food served is locally sourced as are other items in the room for instance the soap and body wash. If you do not wish to eat in the hotel then you have the option to use the Motorway Service Restaurant which also serves locally sourced foods. There is also a large selection of foods and items for sale in the shop.It was pleasing to read that the Hotel is dog friendly and owners are allowed to keep their pets in allocated rooms.A most pleasant night and certainly one we wish to visit again on our trips to and from Scotland.

I stayed here for one evening on a two day business trip. It was an awful two day weather was terrible. Tebay is an amazing motorway services so I was hoping the hotel would be the same. It did not let me down, I arrived in freezing cold on a wet dark day. The hotel has an open reception with a big roaring fire and a bar area but in with bar food available. As a woman travelling alone I usually opt for room service, but I felt comfortable ordering a meal n the reception area. i had home made steak pie and chunky chips it was really good and cost about £10 which for the quality was amazing. The room itself was tastefully decorated with really comfortable beds and a very nice tea and coffee tray included. Breakfast in the morning was outstanding and equally as good as any five star breakfast I have had . All in all I would visit again it was a very nice stay. My only little issue is the price, single rooms have just gone up from about £65 to £85 this makes it quite expensive for a lone traveller.

We had a delightful table close to the huge plate glass window affording attractive views of the Lakeland hills and the nearby spring and stream. I started with Cured Belly Pork, Scallops, Peas and Pancetta (£9.95) which was a delicious combination of surf and turf. The pork just melted and the scallops provided a great contrast. My wife and Whiskey and Beetroot Cured salmon, Avocado puree, Crayfish tails and Red pepper sorbet (£8.95) - perhaps some of the decorative add-ons a little too small but overall it worked well. For the main course, I opted for Tasting of Lamb (Saddle, Belly, Liver and Kidney) all beautifully presented close to pink and again with decorative extras well worth (£18.95). The kitchen was very happy to swap the planned fondant potato for homemade chunky chips. These were fat and crisp and soft on the inside - outstanding. No room left for pudding which was a pity. However this and the breakfast the following morning were really first class. Can't wait to return.

If you need to stay anywhere on your voyage north the M6, stay here and EAT HERE! Even on your way south down the M6 you can get to this hotel and restaurant from the southside Tebay services. This restaurant serves interesting, delicious, often unusual choices, with Masterchef presentation. Not to be missed.

A wonderful meal using locally sourced food with excellent and friendly service from the staff. I had a delicious starter of pieces of salmon prepared in different styles....delicious, as was every course.

We stayed here en-route to Scotland as we had stayed before many years ago. The room was great and nice location; the hotel also accepted dogs and was perfect in every way except one. When booking and on arrival we were really pushed into dining at the restaurant and I overhead the receptionist do the same to the lady in front of us and someone who had phoned whilst we were waiting. There is also a bar menu but it was not obvious anywhere what it was. We booked a table at the restaurant and went in at the allotted time. We didn't have a starter but went straight for the mains - my husband had a 5oz steak which I thought sounded a bit small but he said he wasn't that hungry. I ordered sea bass with couscous. When my meal turned up I thought the sea bass was coming separately as there was no fish on the plate - just a small lump of samphire with two purple lumps (about a cubic inch each) on top. Alongside was a moulded lump of couscous which by moulding it (probably earlier in the day) had turned it rubbery - it was also tasteless. On further inspection the two purple lumps turned out to be the fish. The price of this tiny portion was somewhere between £16 and £18! I complained to the waiter about the portion size and was told they would cook some more for me - ten minutes later another cubic inch of purple turned up. My husbands steak was better and far more varied with more vegetables included and luckily he wasn't hungry as again it was about half the size one would expect for the price. The real insult was then to see a couple at the next table who had massive plates of fish and chips from the bar menu tucking in. We were not offered the bar menu at all! The cheese plate which I had in the hope of eating a proper meal was very good and I would definitely recommend but £65-ish for two tiny mains, two glasses of wine, one ice cream and the cheese was way over the top for what it was. Sorry but we won't be back!

This is the standard that every motorist expects from a "services" road stop, but NEVER receives. At last the dreary, not so clean rest stops have found an acceptable level of cleanliness, and good food. The breads (big variety) are baked on site, and the meals are basically healthy without losing quality. A farm shop is very welcome and easy to find high quality foods. This apples to travellers going north and south, as they are situated on both sides of the road.Keep going until you find this stop, because you will really enjoy the difference between this and the rest - they are light years ahead !

If you are going to Scotland or anywhere on M6 North be sure to stop here for a very welcome respite. Great food, cakes, drinks, soups - a bit pricey but you can always get a cheaper snack in the coffee shop or buy the most wonderful sandwiches, quiche or pies from the Farm Shop. You can stock up for your holiday or on your way back for your home. I did, so there's no rush out to get food. I have their own farmed boneless lamb shoulder cooking right now with the lovely aroma of rosemary from a proper butcher. I was nearly tempted to get a leg of mutton (of which Prince Charles is an advocate). Cold meat, cheeses, Artisan bread, rolls sourdough & foccacia and, I forgot to mention, ducks on the pond - you can sit & snack outside on a good day.

My fiancée and me had a lovely meal at the restaurant. It was well presented, tasty and of a reasonable size. I'm not sure how many non-residents would go there, but it would be worth a drive out there. For me, it was a little on the expensive side, mains in the order of £15 each. I would recommend to people and go back if I used the hotel.

What a little gem this was on a hot trip down the M6. Great place to stop for a munch & refresh and so clean........ Well done. Why aren't all places off the motorway so nice & welcoming?

Found this little haven after having difficulty parking at Tebay. Lots of parking and wonder of wonders somewhere quiet, clean and civilized to stop and have something to eat (at almost any time of day). A rest from the motorway madness. An appetizing menu, with sandwiches and soup, hot food,( We had a lovely beef pie, potatoes and peas) salads, very good coffee and drinks, and quiet efficient service. Sit down in front of a beautiful real fire, in comfortable seats. Clean fresh linen napkins, It would be difficult to fault this. But what a find amidst the craziness of motorway driving, and the ghastly obligatory stops we see en route. Thoroughly recommended for rest and relaxation and something pleasant to eat and drink. Not sure we should share this find, because I would hate it to be over run like the Tebay services place, but hopefully others will find it a respite from the madness of travelling.
