First time we have visited and it will be our last! It looked busy so we thought it would be nice. We ordered and paid at the till and asked for a table. The lady showed us a table piled with dirty plates and said we could sit there and she would clear it. She cleared the table of plates, cups etc but didn't wipe it down. We sat down and found soggy lettuce across the table. There were alot of tables left with dirty plates piled up. I ordered a hallumi burger which was OK, the chips with it were dry and barely warm. My husband ordered a steak pie which came with instant mash and tinned carrots. The pie was hard and over cooked. So over all not great food! The staff were nice enough but they clearly need more staff on and better quality food. The floor behind the till where the food is prepared was disgusting too! So I would go elsewhere unfortunately.

First of all we got told off by being shouted at across the cafe for standing and reading the menu on the wall. Bearing in mind there was no menu in the window. We got told to look at the menus on the table. I said I hadn’t decided we were staying. It was my birthday and I wanted to leave but I think my friend thought I was overreacting but I really did not feel comfortable. My friend ordered pie and mash which was actually Smash. She said the pie was nice. I had Coronation chicken in wholemeal baguette. I can honestly say it was the worst Coronation chicken I’ve ever had. And I’ve had a lot. The chicken was shredded. There was shed loads of curry powder in it resulting in it tasting like salted chicken. There were no apricots or sultanas or almonds in it; little if no mayonnaise. The bread was tasteless. The coleslaw was ok. I had vile frozen tiny potato wedges that were processed within an inch of their lives. I left seventy percent of it. I didn’t complain I just left. Twenty seven pounds wasted.

We were looking for a place to have a light lunch in Halifax town centre, did not want a big meal, but wanted something more than cake and coffee, and wanted to sit inside. We spotted this cafe and decided to try it. You order your food at the counter, which is not clear when you enter, but is indicated on the menu. I had soup, which was served piping hot and was very tasty. My daughter had a jacket potato with chilli, again served piping hot. Service was friendly. I would visit again and maybe sample one of the cakes on display.

Went here for lunch on a lovely sunny day. Sat outside in the lovely glass arcade as we had a dog with us and weren’t sure if they were dog friendly inside. No menu’s on the outside tables and none visible outside. Went inside to obtain a menu. Selected what we wanted and ordered at the counter with very friendly service. The wait for food was very reasonable. I had a hot beef sandwich which I had chosen to have in a white baguette (last one available- lucky me!) served with a side salad and home made slaw. I’m fairly sure that tortilla chips were supposed to be part of the dish, but I may be wrong, and I wasn’t bothered about them to be honest. My husband ordered steak pie served with mashed potato and vegetables. There were no condiments on the table, and we weren’t offered any at service (including salt and pepper) The hot beef sandwich was lovely. Plenty of tender beef in tasty gravy. The side salad would have benefited from a drizzle of dressing of some sort. The steak pie was atrocious. Overcooked to a point of being burnt. Almost impossible to cut through the pastry. Hardly any filling, 3 piece of meat found. Served with instant mash, tinned carrots and standard garden peas (both lukewarm). The gravy was lovely though. A waitress came to collect our obviously finished with plates and asked if everything was ok. My husband told her his opinion of the pie. She said that she would pass this on, and promptly disappeared leaving the empty plates. We thought that someone may have come to speak to us about our commons, but no, so we left, and won’t be going back….. Plenty of other nearby places to eat….

We visited just before the UB40 event at the Piece Hall. We had food and drinks. I had the cheeseburger with wedges and homemade coleslaw it was delicious. Sister had nacho’s and they were amazing. The service was exceptional. They were very busy and still managed to serve our food in good time with a smile. Going to another event on Saturday and will be definitely calling in for food and drinks beforehand. You even get 10% off your order when you book an event at the Piece Hall or Victoria Theatre . Highly recommend.

Very disappointing. I ordered a Tomato, Mozarella and Pesto Baguette. The baguette was okay, tomatoes okay but the mozarella was rubbery, pre-packed mozarella. Given the price of the baguette I really did expect fresh mozarella. My husband ordered the Greek salad and was also disappointed- far too many thick slices of cucumber and overall presentation lacked imagination.

Our first visit to this establishment, we had 2 small breakfasts. After a extremely long wait they arrived, obviously cooked to order. They were delicious well worth the wait. Lovely surroundings, friendly staff. Would have been 5 star had it not been for the fact our waitress was wearing false nails. A definite NO when working with food. I used to own a cafe myself and my staff would not have been allowed false nails, I also think the environmental health would have had something to say about the nails.

This was my first visit and last the food I ordered was appalling, I ordered a sausage sandwich which consisted of two thin sausages cut in half on two slices of bread which was large compared to the sausages. The cappuccino was Luke warm and the waitresses had large false eyelashes which was a bit concerning as not hygienic for the environment. Would not recommend.

In this time several other people had been served panini and tea cakes who came in after us . When our salad was supposedly being made at 1pm the staff member was actually making a hot meal for someone else. We paid £20.05 in total and only received £12.90 refund meaning we were charged over £7 for 2 cans of Fanta So we have been ripped off

This is a nice spot in the Westgate Arcade to enjoy good quality food at a more than reasonable price. The staff are friendly and always pay attention to detail when you place an order. On my visit earlier this week I had a well sized jacket potato filled with tuna mayo which was accompanied by a well presented side salad. The cafe looks to be well maintained and the staff look happy in their work. I have been going here for a few months now and, other than one slight issue during that time, I have been more than satisfied with the quality and temperature of the food served to me. I would recommend a visit to The Gate whenever you are looking for somewhere relaxing and pleasant to eat. Whether it be breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea, the latter looks to be good quality too from what I have seen, I don't think you will be too disappointed.

We called here for breakfast. The cafe is situated in a lovely arcade with lots of eateries nearby, so lots of competition. We ordered food and drink and chose a table outside to enjoy the sunshine. Our coffees arrived very quickly with a nice little biscuit. Our sandwich and teacake came soon after and we're very good. My only negative was that the coffee was quite small so I had to order a couple more. It was great value for money and excellent, friendly service in a great location. They have a great lunch selection too.

Decided to go for one of the specials. Cod fish cakes with salad and lemon wedges. What I received was 2 smaller than average fish cakes and a bit of lettuce with a lemon wedge. I do not think that lettuce constitutes as a ‘salad’ and this would have been fine as a starter but being sold as a main meal does not really cut it. No one ever came to ask if everything was ok. Sorry, but this is not the first time I have been underwhelmed with the food here. We won’t be returning.

A relaxing lunch away from the hustle and bustle of town. Fantastic range of sandwich fillings which can be put inside a variety of different breads. The sandwiches come with a side salad and crisps . I opted for egg mayo on a brown baguette and it was the tastiest egg sandwich I’ve ever eaten ! All the food is freshly prepared. There was plenty of filling and the addition of the salad made this a very good lunch. The ham sandwich and tuna sandwich that my mum and sister opted for was also full of filling. First time I visited Halifax and went here for lunch very happy with my choice. It wasn’t hard to pick my lunch because everything on the menu sounded delicious..I chose a grilled cheese and chicken melt sandwich which arrived with a salad garnish,a pot of houmous with sticks of peppers, carrot and celery and crisps on the side. A delightful plateful and very reasonably priced. My meal was delicious. Also the cafe is licensed so my friends and I had a bottle of wine with our meal which was lovely for a group of ladies who go for a meal in a pub . The staff were lovely and friendly and took time to see we were looked after . Didn’t have room for cake but will definitely be back for the cake and coffee offer in the afternoon. No one was prepairing any food so I was a little cross & asked what was happening & where was our food. The atmosphere was very warm and friendly, the decor reflected their support of local talent and business- the paintings on the wall are very attractive and varied. The afternoon tea was generous, in fact there was so much we had to have a "take home" box which they willingly provided. My favourite was the scone with cream and jam but it was so filling I had to save the equally tempting cheesecake until later. A group of us went in for lunch. There were 18 of us, so we ordered our food in advance to help them on the day. To give them their due, they specially bought in some vegan wraps for me, which I appreciated, and the meal was quite good. Last week I called in to book tables for a group of twelve, and was told that, on the previous occasion, we took up too much room, we only drank tapwater, we didn't spend enough for them to make a decent profit, and in future if we don't spend enough they will add on a service charge. As I say, there were 18 of us, we all bought lunch and all but two of us bought drinks - tea, coffee, cold bottled drinks. They gave us one jug of water, then a second one reluctantly after we remarked that a litre of water doesn't go far among 18 people. When they threatened me with this surcharge on the group of twelve, they didn't specify how much is 'enough' spend, nor did they tell me what the service charge was likely to be. Needless to say, we have decided to go elsewhere!

The drink options are different and of the 'treat yourself' feel, just a little disappointed that the milkshakes were just from crusham bottles behind the counter. But a definite place to return to! We were given menus and decided to sit upstairs where we found seating to suit all. From comfy tub chairs to more formal arrangements of lovely chunky wooden tables and leather dining chairs. We looked through the menu which was extensive and offered so much choice that you soon realise you will need to return! Various sandwich fillings on a choice of breads all sounding tasty and different, jacket potatoes with choice of topping, plated salads, soup and crusty bread......the menu was endless. We returned downstairs to order and pay for our food. The food arrived promptly and looked delicious. We weren't disappointed. Freshly ground coffee or cold juices if you prefer. The coffee, simply lovely!Any of the menu choices can also be bought to be "take away" at a lower price and there are well stocked shelves with tempting deli fare and interesting gifts at very reasonable prices. We all agreed that we will return and perhaps try an "afternoon tea".

Seems like an ancient grade 2 listed building with stone mullion windows and large outdoor garden for kids to run wild in. Worth a stop but in need of some TLC in places. Beers ok. Didn't eat. Staff friendly.
