WAX Watergate Bay in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

Been coming down to Wax from Leeds for over 20 years and as always this year it is still as great as ever! Great food (had the pizza to takeaway and was delicious) Great beer! Fantastic staff and a new manager (since we were here last September ) who was very friendly and welcoming to us and more importantly to our bulldog Humphrey 😊 obviously this is a very dog friendly place.

Me and a few friends are down for the bank holiday weekend and went to wax after been recommended to and it didn’t disappoint it’s in a great location and the food was amazing and so was the young lady Lucy that served us a very polite and friendly member of staff would highly recommend going

We've been here for a few days and have ate and drank at Wax and cannot fault anything...food delicious and service great. Definately a return visit on the cards. Fish and chips were amazing as was fish burger.

Love going to wax and especially loved being greeted by Matt and spooks. Very lovely team with fast service and lovely food.

Great place for a few pints and amazing views over watergate bay! Jake was ace, so friendly and helpful, even got our round ready when he spotted us walking up from the beach! Food was just the ticket after a day of working up an appetite

Enjoyed a large portion of fish and chips (1 and a half fish) on Free Friday. It was nice and toasty alongside the fire. Just what you need after a chilling walk on the beach.

Really disappointing visit. What they advertise on facebook vs what you get when you visit are 2 polar opposites, dirty tables, dirty old scratched cutlery, have to ask for napkins and to have your table wiped. We table of 5 were given 2 menus and they were all ripped and sticky were told they only have 8 menus left and that we needed to order quick so they can give our menus to other customers. This place 5 years ago was special. Now its awful and wont be surprised if they close down in 2025. They don't deserve the business.

Harry Potter themed New Year’s Eve was a smash hit, food, staff all superb. Very disappointing to say the least with our visit to this place. Went there with family who was visiting us for a few days over the Xmas period, ii was embarrassed to have taken them there. Dirty tables, really slow poor service, food order taken, but no food appeared as they forgot about it. Wasted the best part of 90 mins in there just to get an overpriced drink, could understand if it was busy, but only about 5 tables full of people. Won’t be going back there that’s for sure. Needs management who know what they are doing, such a poorly run place in a great Cornish location, could be a potential gold mine with the right management.

We only had coffee and cake. Not the cheapest as the brownies came off the dining menu as opposed to a counter. However the place is nice, the coffee and cake was lovely and the staff friendly.

Amazing food great service, had the stack burger and bonfire burger absolutely recommend! Been here a few times always great service.

What a find - fantastic pizza and Baileys hot chocolate with cream. Roast diner in a giant Yorkshire pudding very filling. Great idea to have a doggy menu - my Doberman enjoyed the Chicken kebab and the treats - very dog friendly. Lovely staff couldn't do enough for us.

Burgers were amazing, service excellent and sea view good, very dog friendly too…really enjoyed our lunch visit.

Amazing!!! Super dog friendly, super kid friendly and fantastic menu to suit all diners. Dealt with my grumpy toddler very well. Will definitely be coming back here!!

I've had a few visits here food is good and reasonably priced and plenty of it. Can't vouch for the rooms as never stayed

Love this place!! Walk straight off the beach in your boardies and sit down for a cold beer and some cheesy chips with a fantastic view across Watergate Bay. Perfect

Weekend away, good food and a buzzy atmosphere. Rooms are shabby chic, more of a student bedroom than a hotel room but functional and some rooms have great views. Food was good, caters for gluten free like me! Short walk to beach, big carpark nearby and on a bus route ! Ideal for a night away or a weekender.

Ate here and they had entertainment on which was excellent. Food was good.

Fabulous food and great service. We also enjoyed 2 for £12 pina coladas this evening. Watergate bay beach front restaurants are expensive, but this was very reasonably priced and will go again.

Wax is located in a great spot and didn’t disappoint. We went there on a sunny day but got a table and enjoyed the views from the upstairs outdoor area. Food and service were excellent, burgers very good and also special mention to the fried squid. Would recommend for a chilled lunch

Well, where do I start!! My whole experience from start to finish was phenomenal. This isn’t my first time here and certainly won’t be my last. Me and my friends come every year and sometimes we spend an entire summer here. The staff are amazing, especially Harry what a credit to the business, I’ve never had customer experience like this. We came for some beers and burgers and it did not disappoint, was greeted by two of the loveliest girls Myla and Issy and shown straight to our table with a great view. Harry (the one with the Best mullet I’ve ever seen, definitely the best Wax has ever seen) made me feel like I was family, nothing was too much for him to handle and he strived to make us all happy and content. Hot food arrived promptly after ordering and it was delicious! The price isn’t bad at all especially with the view. One of my favourite places to eat from here on out and the key takeaway is we should all be more like Harry!!!!

Had a fantastic night at Wax last night. The old Time Sailors were playing and the place was buzzing. We had booked a table over looking the band but unfortunately because of the wet weather the band played inside. This did not affect our evening at all ! The food was fantastic one pulled pork burger and one wax pizza both were fresh and tasty. The knickerbocker glory for dessert was big enough to share. Another great night at wax 😄

Stopped in for a drink and a snack and thoroughly enjoyed it. Plenty of draught beer, hot fresh chicken wings were delicious, the dog enjoyed her doggy kebab and the view of the bay is awesome!

Popped in a few times for a rattler or two after the beach . Chilled atmosphere & friendly vibe from staff . Made the mistake of trying again during boardmasters and regretted being 53 😂, was amazing for those lucky enough to be young though !!

We visited Newquay from London and wanted to eat at the beach. We couldn't get a reservation and I'm actually glad. We stumbled upon wax and I have to say this place was amazing! Great food, wonderful service, great view of the bay from the terrace outside (we didn't realise there are 2 to choose from!!) and we were even blessed with some afternoon entertainment and he was wonderful! Toilets were clean and there's an accessible toilet downstairs. I would definitely reccomend eating here or having drinks. It's also dog friendly. Cocktails were great and 2 4 1 and the price of food was reasonable too. Sadly didn't take photos but the food quality is great and theres a good choice from the kids menu

Had a lovely lunch at Wax with a selection of small plates to share the food was done well, served in good time, nice and hot and tasty so it ticked all the boxes for a bit of lunch with a nice view in the sun. We walked there from Newquay along the beaches at low tide so had earned a beer and some food. Certainly better value than the £22 taxi back. Staff were good, plenty of outside seating. There is local car parks so a drive here is trouble free. Would certainly go back.

Great spot. Really dog friendly. Food was excellent although a bit mystified why the 'small plates' couldn't come as a starter. Minor issue though and overall very good. Burgers are very good as are the pizzas.

we had a couple off meals here and both times they were absolutely delicious, we had a drink most nights during our holiday as the staff made us feel so welcome and were so friendly and Ethan always had a smile of his face. Highly recommend

Went for dinner after an evening on the beach. Food was amazing, staff were so friendly and really helpful! They were so lovely to my 3 year old, really made an effort to talk to her. Cannot recommend enough!!

The food was amazing! We visited during the beer and burger fest, i had the kangaroo burger and Ostrich burger, which were both fantastic. My son also had a Kangaroo burger, which he loved. The loaded nachos were the tables' favourite, though. The staff were absolutely fantastic and they were all extremely polite and friendly. It was a lovely atmosphere to be around!

Did not stay so cant comment on rooms. Food was wonderful especially the cauliflower bites

We are a rowdy bunch so we sat out on the terrace. Brilliant cocktails to start the meal off, I was very impressed with the Gin, Limoncello and freshly squeezed lemon cocktail which the owner invented himself. Food was fantastic and arrived with speed. Staff are so friendly and as the night drew on it got cold. Blankets and patio warmers were offered which was amazing and we ended up staying for sometime. Lots of giggles and banter was had and they never made us feel like we were an annoyance - 8 mature ladies drinking cocktails :-) We thank you so much Wax!! When we are next in the area we will definitely be coming back.

Visited for some burgers for lunch today! Classic wax and wax mex….Both were epic! Very friendly woman on the bar. We even managed to speak to the chef to say the burgers were excellent! We will definitely be back.

I stayed close to WAX for a couple of nights recently and ended up eating there both nights! Lovely food (pizza one night and a legendary WAX burger on the second visit). The staff were friendly, polite and actually smiled (which seems a rare thing these days in some places). I shall return and definitely recommend if you want a chilled atmosphere and lovely grub right by watergate beach…

My friend and I got caught in a downpour last week while we were out with the dog. We have eaten here plenty of times but thought we’d just have a hot choc to get warmed up. The food looked that good going out we ended up getting a pizza and some nachos to share ! Food was delicious, hot choc was lovely and the dog enjoyed his bonio 😂

Sadly I was a but disappointed to be honest. I've been wanting to try wax for a few years and finally got a chance to yesterday. I found the food looked impressive but lacked in taste and definitely lacked in seasoning. Was also very dry. Definitely didn't live up to expectations. Everything looked quite rundown as well sadly.

Lovely evening good food and great service. It was only a Monday evening but it lacked any real atmosphere. Not sure why it was so quiet it never used to be.

Called in for hot chocolate and some nibbles after a morning up on the beach. Matthew just goes above and beyond every time we’ve visited here. Always ends up being our go to for our last night meal in Cornwall, great pit stop for hot chocolate (baileys hot chocolate is a fav) and Matthew even let the kids add their own toppings to their hot chocolates yesterday. Just all around amazing, food amazing, staff amazing, location amazing! Highly recommend Wax! We’ll be back again in August no doubt!

Amazing team. I booked the Easter egg hunt and got the wrong day. Turned up and the team were amazing. Had one very upset girl and they pulled out all the stops. We got free drinks and the staff even gave her a slice of Easter cake and let her put on the extras. They even found and Easter egg. She got to spend time with the staff who answered her questions about sea life. Thank you so much we loved it. And will be back

Really lovely out of season stop off, free parking due to time of year. Lots of seating, nice covered 'outdoor' spot. Great prompt service and good selection of drinks. Baileys hot chocolate was lush!

The best welcome and the best food as always ! We got a feast of choices and are so happy with it all! The pizzas are perfectly crispy and everything is super tasty!

Visited on a lovely sunny February day for lunch. We were greeted by a lovely smiley attendant who made us feel most welcome. The food was quick and tasty. The pizza is excellent and cannot fault the other items we ordered. When we are holidaying again, we will certainly make a stop again.

Went on a 50% off pizza and burger day, lovely location, nice views, pizzas were thinner than a tortilla, thinnest pizza I ever had and minimal toppings, couldn’t taste the tomato sauce. Order was misread by the chef so we had to wait a while for our correct order with no compensation. If it hadn’t been 50% off I would have asked for reduction in the bill, maybe it was just an off day as families burgers and kids meals looked nice

Always visit Wax when we’re in Watergate Bay, very good food & drink selection, dog friendly too, they also do Waffles(Waffle House) as part their menu.

Been visiting Wax for many years. Out of season so very quiet on both of our visits. We didn’t eat but had many drinks. Matthew worked hard cleaning and sweeping. It was my birthday and I had a great evening. Matthew played our favourite songs and sent photos of our evening to me (upon my request). We will return.

Staff were so friendly, ordered a take out and it was ready quickly and tasted amazing.

We have been visiting Wax for nine years but this year will be our last visit sadly. We have always loved Wax and feel like it’s like revisiting an old friend however this year the legendary nachos were were dry and had obviously sat under a heat lamp for ages before being brought out you had to literally fight with knife and fork to separate them and the portion size was so much smaller than previously. Restaurant was very quiet so cannot blame it on being busy but main courses same thing maybe nice when they were first prepared but seemed like they had been sat somewhere before being served pizza crust cold and Rick hard pizza tough the seafood linguine had virtually no sauce as all sunk into pasta. The place seemed scruffy and tired and in need of a revamp won’t return

Some friends and I visited last night (Thursday) for the Tapas menu. We were blown in the door by the wind ! But they had the log fire going so sat by that. The lady serving us was very friendly and helped with our choices....

Sadly I felt the cheese pizza was tasteless I feel tomato sauce needed seasoning and maybe sharp cheese sorry to moan but I wouldn't return

Absolutely delicious food again! This is a consistently good restaurant with food that never disappoints. The staff are friendly, kind and attentive. They check your food is okay and always ask of there is anything they can get you. I love that nothing is too much. I will often go for a long walk along the shoreline with my 3 dogs. Then come in for some food, my dogs are wet and sandy but they are always attentive to them too. There is a water station for the dogs and biscuits. And when mine make a mess (having a drink) they don't get cross. They give my dogs attention and that means so much to me that they are welcome too. They host lovely events, such as point break cliffside cinema...which was on phenomenal!! Dog walk events and support local charities and businesses. Really is a lovely community of staff and patrons. Could not ask for more.

The new Sunday roast wrap was THE most amazing thing we’ve tasted, and we traveled from Bristol to try it! Is didn’t disappoint, neither did the service 😊 would recommend !

An absolute amazing place, the food is amazing… sometimes you have to wait if it is busy but that’s what you would expect for freshly cooked food. If you want fast food go to McDonald’s! The venue is second to none and the staff couldn’t...

We booked for a meal. Had great friendly service and food arrived as quickly as I'd expect. Was dog friendly and fairly buzzing. Wonderful location. Yes you order at the bar, not a problem. We had the chicken burgers. Wings and a special the bonfire burger. All good quality hot and fresh. Perfect after a day walking and surfing

Awful. Chicken wings were ridiculously spicy it was burning our mouths. The squid was clearly frozen from a big food supplier. They were cold and barely fried. The pizza was edible but disappointing. £58 down the drain. Avoid.

Food looked great when bought out. Shame it was all out of a packet. Salt and pepper squid was clearly frozen, tasteless and over cooked. Beef brisket on the nachos was dry, cold and flavourless. Guacamole and other toppings where clearly out of a squeezy...

Pleasant staff bring our food but otherwise sadly disappointing food. Tasteless salt & pepper squid (couldn’t even taste the salt or the pepper), ditto the mozzarella sticks. Standard frozen chips which were fine but expensive. There are better places to eat in Watergate Bay
