Been to this pub for many years and the food was great and plenty full We went this year and the food was very nice to look at But very disappointing with a rip off price. As much as we as a family we can’t fault the staff, they were very nice and attentive. But we won’t be eating there unless they change there menu and size of the food. Every time we have been there it was always hard to find a table in the garden, This year we were the only people plus another couple. Twice on this years holiday. My advice is this is why the pubs and restaurants don’t succeed in the local area. Due to high prices and very little portions. Go for a drink and enjoy the view

The lovely atmosphere is seriously let down by the food. It was excessively overpriced for tiny quantities. A starter of mushroom tortellini for £12.50 was one tiny piece of tortellini. The fish special at £36.50 of sea bass was tiny, no vegetables other than fries. The saving grace was the dessert, delicious. However we felt royally ripped off, & the nice flavours were spoiled by the taste of greedy owners. No wonder the locals don't come here. Very sad, it could be so good.

Be warned. A la carte prices for tasting menu sized portions. Pictured is the £42 beef fillet. Watery sauces. Undercooked new potatoes. Overcooked fish of the day. Overcooked pasta. Staff laughing in the kitchen. Rip off joint for wealthy tourists. We had some food refunded as it was very poor. AVOID unless you’re so wealthy you don’t care.

Popped in for a bite to eat whilst at the beach. Wasn't anything on the limited menu that took our fancy so we ordered some chips to keep us going until we found elsewhere to book a table. Unbelievable, they came out in a coffee mug! Each containing a measly 9 chips. One portion was a potato! Such a shame as used to be such a lovely place to eat.

We had supper last night and I can honestly say it was more than disappointing. Such a shame as it’s a great location and could be incredible. I do remember it being incredible many many years ago. The owners clearly don’t care as after reading other reviews absolutely nothing has been done to remedy any of the issues that quite clearly need sorting out. A review from this time last year complaining about the pork dish. A year on and it’s still on the menu. Really?? Most unusual menu if not a little limited. Firstly my starter of summer veg salad with whipped goats cheese came out without the goats cheese so I sent it back and it arrived with said cheese but honestly the main ingredient gets left off the plate? Such a silly error! My husband suffered the most because both of his dishes were sub standard and not as described. He ordered fish soup which (on the menu) said it had white fish, prawns and mussels in it. When it arrived the soup didn’t have one mussel in it but was full of clams. Luckily my husband likes clams but god forbid he should have been allergic to them! We weren’t told about this. When his main course arrived it was the nail in the coffin. The pork dish sounded wonderful on the menu but in front of him was a dish clearly meant for a sparrow. Two of the smallest pieces of pork. The size of a pound coin. A quarter of an onion and some apple sauce. No vegetables or a potato in sight. That was it. £30 thank you. Absolutely Ludicrous. The staff were attentive but we could quite clearly see that they agreed with us. The Manager was great, sympathetic and loyal to the hotel. We felt for him. He didn’t charge us for the pork dish and also took a bottle of wine off the bill. Will not be recommending Port Gaverne or going back until they get themselves sorted and stop charging Mayfair prices in Cornwall. I wonder if the owners will be in touch or actually act on these reviews?

We originally wanted to go for lunch at the nearby Pilchards but it was closed (despite the website saying open so probably best to call them beforehand to double check). which meant we went to the Port Gaverne Hotel instead. It was a sunny day so we sat outside. Husband went in to order drinks from the bar and asked for the lunch menu to be told that we would have to sit inside which is dark and not ideal with two dogs and a baby - but their main reason was that they don't serve food outside because the wind would spoil the food! This is the Cornish coast so wind is pretty much constant and surely it's the customers' call whether their food is spoilt or not by being outside? We said we'd be happy to take that risk, we didn't need table service and could come and collect our own food from the bar and return the plates, but they weren't going to budge, so we just had a drink outside. While we were there another group of 8 people sat down outside, including some Americans, who also wanted to order food and were told the same as us - they were incredulous. How much business must this place lose daily? Our two groups amounted to 13 covers.

All the staff welcoming and very friendly, particularly the manager Phillipe I believe. The room was spacious and decorated beautifully. The bed was exceptionally comfortable. Loved having a bath as well as the shower. Everything was spotless so clean and comfortable. We had a meal in both the hotel’s restaurant and the adjacent Pilchards which I believe they own. The food is of high quality, Michelin standard absolutely delicious yes you pay a bit more but absolutely worth every penny! The staff were very courteous and knowledgeable about the food. There was a family who were staying in the Pink House adjacent to the hotel. They were unjustifiably rude to the staff complaining about their meal. The staff were so polite and professional in what was a very challenging situation. The family in question obviously didn’t think the food was that bad as they had another meal there the following day. One other thing too add the hotel and the surrounding area is all dog friendly which was an added bonus for us. Disliked · The only complaint would be the drinks are very expensive.

After very much looking forward to returning to having a meal as the roast we rated as one of the best we were very much disappointed as we were given the menus and asked to choose what we would like, I brought up a question of what is smoked potatoes, so the waitress explained and that was fine so all 4 of us ordered from the small plates which were around £12 each, our order arrived and i receive pork cheek with smoked potatoes as i thought i requested but when the bill arrived i saw bacon chop and i was charged £25 so i queried it and was told that was what i had even though i asked for a small plate and wouldn't know what I'm receiving, i wasn't even offered to be met half way with the price which would of made things a little more expectable and the worst thing of all we couldn't even see the bacon chop on the large plates so it has made us look different at this place and don't think we would return as it has left a bitter taste

Ate here a couple of times on holiday in Port Issac. Very professional set up. Imaginative food at an affordable price, with a menu slightly changing daily, great staff, definitely a recommendation from me. Would have liked more local caught produce on the menu such as lobster, scallops, etc. Of the 3 places we eat this probably edged it on the food front. I have given the other venues 5* also BTW.

I have never been treated so badly in a place that I have been in for many years, waiting to be served. If busy, I could understand, but it wasn't busy at all. A younger person walks in and gets served before me, even though i was waiting, which I found very rude. To top it off, I wasn't expecting the shock of the price for a glass of wine- the fact of the bar person apologise for the price says it all, I found this extremely sad, in a place which was perfect in every way, welcoming, price, and now got greedy

Having come to Port Gaverne for years, the pub has always been a go-to, where we can enjoy a pint at the bar, chat with the staff and great food. Sadly this is no longer the case. What once was a delicious menu with plenty of options and excellent value is now a rip off, with two courses for £38 and supplements if you want half of it. All we wanted was fish and chips and were forced to have a starter or dessert. The portions for starters were tiny and although the fish and chips were good, it left a bad taste in the mouth paying that amount. The atmosphere from the pub has gone. We returned in July hoping this had changed but on realising the menus were the same we decided to dine elsewhere which is a shame. We popped in for a drink in the evening and the place was empty, only one table dining and one other person at the bar, crazy for mid summer holidays when only a few years ago you were fighting for a table! Please bring back the pub we love and stop trying to compete with the Nathan Outlaws/Rick Steins of the area. All we want is a fantastic local to enjoy like we used too.

I assume that the hotel has new owners as it was unrecognisable as the place we have frequently visited. The warmth and locals have gone replaced by an evident desire for the award of a michelin star. The menu is transformed, the portions tiny and expensive, the food fussy and though well cooked is more akin to a london dining experience. Its sad as the place used to be a joy.

Following on from previous poor reviews which are all accurate, I want to make everyone aware that the details posted about "AA 5 star, 2 Rosette rated 17th-century Port Gaverne Restaurant & Hotel" are at best inaccurate. They claim that "Your dishes will be cooked simply and with integrity by Head Chef James Lean and his team, who have learnt their trade under some of the UK’s top Michelin-star chefs". In fact, as far as I am aware, James Lean has not been associated with Port Gaverne Restaurant for a number of years. I strongly advise the management of the Port Gaverne to accurately reflect the quality of their staff and update their details far more regularly.

I feel utterly devastated and am absolutely amazed to see so many 5 star reviews. The content of which does seem to be a little like an advertisement for a location desperate for recognition, which they certainly won't get when the woeful reviews are found to be honest and true. Family and friends have been visiting Port Gaverne for over 40 years, with two friends having properties locally. We adored popping into the pub for a warm by the fire and a couple of drinks on a cold evening, or trying to grab a table outside to catch a summer sunset. But we won't be doing that again. Six of us popped by for a drink on our first afternoon in Port Gaverne this summer. We were amazed to see that most outdoor tables were empty, as normally it is very busy on a Saturday afternoon. The penny dropped when we ordered a small jug of Pimms (got 6 small glasses out of the jug and the Pimms could be barely tasted) and three pints. The bill was £50 - nearly £7 a pint and £30 for the Pimms! Then I went into the bar, which is why I feel so sad, as I realised that the beautiful old huge solid wooden bar, with brass edging and brass foot rest, that has been there longer than any of the locals can remember, had gone! In its place was a bar which was featureless, and I'm not even sure was wood. Probably wipe clean plastic. Distressed old floor boards fronted the bar which just made it look worse. The old characterful wooden tables and chairs had gone - replaced with the same fake wooden wipe clean tops and matching chairs. The pictures and photos on the walls showing Port Gaverne as a working port, loading Delabole slate onto sailing ships, a huge shark caught by fisherman, and many others ...... all gone (including quizmaster Eric's photo for those who visited before). Replaced by prints of lobster and crab that could be bought for a few pounds on any high street. Three was an old side room called the cabin which was full of old maritime nic nacs. Kids were fascinated by it. It was full of history. The table was taken from an old ship and had hinged sides that could be folded up so that tableware did not slide off in heavy seas. A great talking point. All gone. Cheap made to measure table. Character ripped out. I'm all for progress and change, but to rip the soul out of such an iconic pub is criminal. There are so many true comments about the mediocre food served and the prices charged, particularly the supplements, that I've no need to repeat them. Nor the prices charged for average but good wines. We cancelled all our bookings in the restaurant for the fortnight after our first afternoons experience and looking at the frankly ridiculous menu. We also cancelled our bookings at Pilchards, the hotels "sister" cafe for the same reason. We did not return for food or drink for the rest of the holiday. Bearing in mind that is 3 families, totalling 13 people, all cancelling multiple bookings. One of our group did decide to risk a meal which he described as mediocre. He a small crab ravioli for starter at an £8 supplement, his wife didn't want a starter. Took his own wine and was happy to pay £20 corkage. Both had haddock and chips. Bill was £94. We've now re-named our once favourite pub in the world as The Dick Turpin. The current management should be ashamed of themselves. They have destroyed a unique heritage all in the quest to maximise income and squeeze every penny from any passing tourist. Locals have completely abandoned the place, as will everybody who goes there. Avoid.

We were there for 2 nights while attending a wedding. We were very disappointed with the overall experience for the following reasons:- -The price of the room (£260/night) was exorbitant given the size and the facilities available in the room. -The evening meal we had on the night of our arrival was expensive and mediocre. We were astonished to see that on top of the charge of £38 for 2 courses, there were supplements of £16 (!) for turbot, £14 for sole and £12 for steak. Furthermore, if we desired a sauce with the steak, there a further supplement of £4. We have never seen a charge being levied for sauces in a numerous experiences of eating in restaurants. -The breakfasts were mediocre at best and on our second morning there were no fruits, no croissants, unreplenished jugs of fruit juice and the kitchen ran out of bread for toast. -Some of the staff lacked the personal touch one would have expected in a hotel which regards itself as prestigious. We were left with the feeling that "as the only game in town" in Port Gaverne, the owners/management felt that they could charge whatever they liked for a less than first class experience (food and accommodation-wise). It smacked of exploitation. WE shall know not to book here again and will certainly not recommend it to others.

We have been regular diners at the Port Gaverne Hotel, around 12 times a year, for over 30 years. Of course there have been changes over this period but even as recently as last year, the menu was varied and very good with crab sandwiches and moules and frites available at lunchtimes and local fish and shellfish in the evenings. Sadly, this is no longer the case. There are no simple dishes but rather 2 courses for £38 and many choices involving a supplement. This makes eating there even more expensive especially with substantiàl increases in the prices charged for the same wine compared with last year. We have been advised that the restaurant is seeking a Michelin Star. That is not what we go there for. If we want a special meal we would go to Rick Stein’s, Paul Ainsworth’s or Nathan Outlaw’s. There is plenty of choice locally. We feel that the Port Gaverne Hotel has become soulless and a shadow of its former vibrant self. It is sad as to eat there was always part of our holiday and this has been taken away from us.

The Gaverne has been a part of my life for 50 years, and it is so sad to see the food offering sink so low. Yes, it’s still a great location to enjoy a drink, but think twice before booking a table. The menu is designed to milk as much as possible from passing trade. I’m guessing that repeat business is not a consideration. You have to order two courses, but the choice of starters is not inspiring and they should come with bread… but that is an extra £6. The main courses mostly need sides at extra cost, so you’re steered towards the cod and chips, which was covered in so much dark greasy batter that I felt quite queasy. If you want a bottle of wine they’re charging double what any reasonable restaurant would. £45 for Piqupoul! Normally £26-29. Service was mixed, and when they asked if I’d enjoyed the food I said that I wouldn’t be rushing back. We’ll pass your comments on to the chef they said. No locals eat there now, which says it all. Bring back a good honest locally sourced, well-prepared menu and a wine list with some value. We don’t mind paying a premium for such a legendary location, but not for food that we don’t even enjoy.

Lovely pub, great atmosphere. We sat in the bar area waiting for them to start serving food. Ended up drinking too much, so asked about a room. Surprisingly, the staff member wasn’t interested in booking direct, and couldn’t tell us if a room was available. So, despite being in the restaurant at this point, and a couple of hundred quid in, we were directed to Booking.com. Bizarre. So, we had a good night, lots of drink, huge bar bill, then ventured up to our now booked room. Room 19, ‘The proper job’, as it’s named. It really wasn’t. Furnished like a tacky Indian restaurant, and very small. We opened the bathroom, and both said it smelled like someone had already used it! In all honesty, I have never seen a bathroom in this condition before. The room cost £190 per night, out of season. The bathroom looked like something out of a YHA. Dirty. I spoke with the manager at check out, who couldn’t have been less interested, and told me the room is usually £300, and that it is on the list for a refurb. I have no idea what they are doing with this place. It’s in a great location, fab bar and restaurant, just lovely. I have no doubt they have some nice rooms, but the ones that need refurbishing should be hi-lighted to potential guests and offered at a lower rate. I asked for reimbursement, and was expecting some sort of discussion. The manager just looked like he was out of his depth. It seems there are a lot of bad reviews of late….. I think more experienced staff would have dealt with the situation much better.

A very lovely family holiday evening meal. Choose the fish/seafood options - delicious! Deserts were nice too. Friendly attentive service, I was happy to give a tip.

Evening meal for 12 people. Food was nice and served all together but personally thought it was very overpriced for what is essentially pub food in a pub environment with fine but not the most professional/experienced service.

Superb food and excellent staff.we went for an evening meal, booked online the day before- we are on holiday in Port Isaac and my brother had recommended eating in Port Gaverne. So glad we looked this place up, we had 3 courses - amazing muscles as starter, lemon sole and the battered haddock as mains - both beautifully cooked obviously very fresh fish. Desserts were the pannacotta and chocolate ale cake, very enjoyable. All the staff welcoming and efficient, and treated us well. Cannot believe some of the poor reviews I read recently posted so made the effort to post a good review as we genuinely thoroughly enjoyed our evening.

every meal we had was delicious and we stayed here for 3 nights. Best kippers I have ever tasted. Obviously the fish is the highlight as next to the sea! Great varied choice for all food requirements

We went for a family lunch, remembering quite a sophisticated menu from our past outings here, but ended up with a fish & chips. The menu is much simpler than what is shown even now on the Tripadvisor. My family were pretty happy but I expected a little bit more. So, just an advice to check the menu before you book as it must change significantly with season

Disabled wife walking with a stick turned away from an empty table at the back of the bar. Refused service as no walk in service allegedly due to four chefs quitting that morning. Same barman pulled one drink whilst giving orders to the other barman who was doing all the work. Avoid this place.

The meal was excellent, the surroundings beautiful, the service first rate - then the nephew of the owner arrived in his Range Rover. Whilst parking he nearly hit the table we were sitting at outside the restaurant, then as a small delivery van tried to pass him it touched his wing mirror and he lost the plot.He leapt out of his car and gave the delivery driver the most appalling mouthful of foul language at the top of his voice. To be honest there was not a mark on his wing mirror, but that didn't seem to matter. After his tirade he looked very pleased with himself and proudly boasted that he was about to drag the driver out of his van and beat him up.If this is the level of employee at the restaurant I cannot recommend going there despite the wonderful food. Such a shame that a relative of the owner feels this is appropriate behaviour in front of about 20 diners.

We had a very warm welcome from the team at the bar and Jackey. Then were looked after by the lovely Michelle, who was delightful and really helpful with food and wine recommendations. We had mussels to start, in a very tasty sauce and it was a very generous portion. We both followed with a beautifully cooked half lobster, with a garlic butter dressing. Then shared a dessert of panacotta with honeycomb, which was lovely. Service was really good, we had time to rest in between courses and felt really well looked after. The restaurant is full of character and quirky little touches. The hotel and restaurant is in the beautiful setting of Port Gaverne and is well worth a visit. Thank you.

We visited the Port Gaverne restaurant in June and the food was great. However 2 months later the menu had gone down hill, 2 courses for £35 per person, an absolute rip off. The quality was not up to the usual standard and the menu very limited, we were so disappointed we cancelled a future reservation. The place hasn't been the same since Graham sold it many years ago!

Firstly, beware that parking is a problem here in summer, as we discovered. You need to park at Port Isaac and either walk or find a tuk-tuk... No one told us this before hand and we found the staff, one in particular, so hostile when we finally arrived 5 minutes late for our table we wondered if they actually wanted our business. And to be honest I don't think they did! All in all an awful experience and one we will never repeat. There are much better restaurants with friendly, welcoming staff - and better food!

Sat outside in the beer garden. Nice wooden tables but the chairs are too low for them and you’re also hemmed in by tall hedges on three sides - only one table out of them all gets a decent sea view. Service was slow although the waiter who took our order was welcoming. The waitress who delivered our drinks however was cold and unfriendly. Drinks themselves were overpriced and disappointing - Ice we didn’t ask for and that cheap syrup coke that comes out of a pump. Ladies toilets dirty and lacking a working hand dryer. Didn’t stay long and won’t be coming back.

We arrived at the hotel on Friday lunchtime and were pleased with the parking arrangements. The room itself was very small and lacking in some of the amenities that were advertised such as a direct phone in the room. The sockets were close to the carpets and we had to move some of the furniture to plug in the coffee machine. After dinner, we went to bed. Staying above a restaurant we expected a certain amount of noise but our room (5) was next to a room they used for private dinning. The noise was unbelievable! We were hoping it would settle down by ten o’clock but it continued until after eleven when a member of staff came up and told them they would have to leave. This took a while and continued with drunken shouting and laughing on the landing directly outside our room. The staff then continued to clear the plates/ glasses from the room until nearly midnight. We would have telephoned downstairs but had no phone in our room and it would have meant going downstairs into the restaurant in our night attire. We left this morning feeling tired and totally unrested for a long journey home. I spoke to a member of staff this morning about the situation who explained that she would let the manager know but he was unavailable to discuss the matter. We paid nearly £340 for a one nights stay at this hotel which should have been a relaxing, comfortable experience.

Food was very nice, but had a nightmare with the parking and we had driven an hour to get there, we couldnt park on site anywhere and were made to feel we were an inconvinience and it was for us to sort out. Did park quite away away but wish we were told parking would be a problem/issue. There was some parking for hotel residents which were available but we couldnt use the spaces, Felt one of the staff was a bit rude to us re the issue,

It was a beautiful sunny day and the staff showed us to a table stuck in what must have been the darkest corner of the restaurant. I asked for another table and was told they would see what they couldDo but all the tables were booked. There were only one couple in this part of the restaurant !! The waitress came back and offered us another table. Next to a Stack of high chairs And next to the till !! I said no thank you to whichShe replied ‘oh have that table then!’ In a sarcastic voice. Very limited and over priced menu. Waited ages to be served. We have been coming to this resturant for 8 yearsAnd it was always one of our favourites. Now it just overpriced and the menu is too fancy. Won’t be back. Bring back good old pub grub and stop Being greedy

Unfortunately our whole experience was disappointing, when we arrived we were surprised to see that none of the staff were wearing masks (despite a sign asking the customers wear them) and yes I know it’s not a legal requirement but every other restaurant we visited during our week in Cornwall had them on.The lady that greeted us was quite blunt and not particularly welcoming. We went on a Sunday looking forward to a roast, probably should have checked first, but apparently no-one wants roasts in July & August so they don’t do them. The lunch menu was quite limited and very expensive - my summer risotto was £18 and while it tasted nice it was very under-seasoned.The food was thrown down on the table by another surly waitress which didn’t impress us.The worst part was the children’s roast chicken which was served on a strange skinny rectangular plate which made it very hard to eat and was very disappointing, it was probably half a chicken breast and three very dry new potatoes literally just thrown on the plate with no care. All in all it was not up to the quality we had expected from the previous reviews and images of the food. Oh well you live and learn. On the other hand the sister restaurant Pilchards across the way was fabulous!!

We had a family dinner out here on 24 july, 5 adults, 2 small children. We were crushed together in a cubicle opposite the kitchen door. The food was good though expensive but the service disgraceful. We and to wait nearly an hour for our main course and during that time not one single member of staff had the courtesy to come and apologise. When I went to ask, they said they were short staffed. That does not excuse their lack of courtesy. No attempt was made to offer any compensation. Sadly, they are busy and can charge what they like and do to seem to value their customers. All a bit too easy for them, so very disappointing.

We arrive for an early dinner at 5:45 and where given a lovely table by the window. We had nibbles and pre dinner drinks which was excellent, yummy warm sourdough and seaweed whipped butter! Along with a hugh portion olives. Starters were very tasty and presentation was stunning. Fish tasted fresh and complement each aspect of the dish well. Mains again where delicious, lobster was very fresh and tasty chips. The sausage and mash I would HIGHLY recommend !! It was the best I have ever had, the most amazing soft clotted cream mash to die for. The cod curry and steaks both mouth watering. Hot coffees and rich chocolate fondants for dessert. They had very good gluten free options which can be hard to find. Overall we had a lovely meal and would suggest going for an early dinner if you want to be looked after well as they get very busy at 7ish.

Fantastic meal. Could not fault anything. It is Dog friendly. Our pup who was well behaved sat under the table, coming out for a pet, before she went back on her mat. I had the lobster, which was fabulous. We are both stuffed to the gills. Service was attentive not intrusive. Friendly staff and fellow diners. We’d previously had lunch which again was fabulous.

The food was excellent and full of pleasant culinary surprises, but the customer service was terrible and below par. The waiting staff was gloomy, forgetful and even ignorant at times, service was out of order. They mixed up our drinks and mains, and the bill. Also, a long wait for desserts although the dessert was delightful. Excellent kitchen deserves better customer service, otherwise the whole experience is average. It's a shame!P.S. The majority of places in Port Isaac were fully booked at the time of our visit, but this place had dinner slots available. This might have been a telling sign.

Have been here 3 times in last year and sad to say that our visit tonight was hugely disappointing. We booked more than 2 months ago and on arrival were sat at the worst table - on its own outside the (very smelly) toilets. After complaining we got moved to the main room so clearly an acceptable table was available and the table by the loos was not used for the rest of the night so why they placed us there remains a mystery. Our 65 quid bottle of white burgundy arrived but nobody opened it so we sat for 10 minutes. When we asked for it to be opened it was warm so we waited to get ice. We ordered a second, different wine and that arrived warm but at least it was screw top so we could open ourselves. But again, it was warm! The food was good. We had a couple of lobster, the baked cod for main. Porthilly mussels a disappointing starter but mackerel and soup good. Toilets dirty, no means to dry hands in both toilets. A real shame.

Fantastic hotel, great food and service. The bathroom ls are very modern, but the rooms aren't. The pillow cases and sheets smelt stale so we had to ask for fresh ones. It's very centrally located, so you do get a lot of noise. It's on an island, so as the double decker buses turned, the top floor could look right into our room. The TV signal didn't work until staff stuck the wire to the wall with blue tack. All in all, not too bad, but room for improvement with the rooms.
