Whilst down in Penzance for the day I gave Waves a try for some lunch. Good first impressions, very clean and nice feeling. Given the menus, drinks, specials and the main menu. I decided on two pots of tea, ham egg and chips and scampi and chips. Got a large pot of tea for two, even though it didn't say that on the menu. No problems though. Ham egg and chips looked great and tasted great. The scampi and chips were nice plenty of scampi but lacking in fries. Personally I would have preferred the chunky chips with the scampi. I did feel the scampi was slightly overpriced to be honest at I believe £15.95. The total cost for the above was £36.90 ! It seemed expensive for what we had to be honest. Also we asked for some homemade coffee and walnut cake to take away. I was gobsmaked when they asked for another £5.95 for that ! I guess you learn by experience. Overall it was nice but not amazing. Friendly staff, and very clean. But probably wouldn't return purely based on the prices. Give it a go see if I'm right 👍

Dined at Waves whilst visiting a good friend who lives in Penzance. The first thing I noticed when walking in was the cleanliness of the dining area. We were immediately greeted and seated. I chose the Newlyn fish and chips………what a treat cooked to perfection and washed down with chilled pinot Grigio. The service was both friendly and professional and made for a great dining experience. Bonus: dog friendly.

Whilst preambling around Penzance decided we needed to stop for lunch. Initially thought £20 for fish & chips a bit steep but I can honestly say it was the best fish & chips I've had! Soft, milky white fish & the lightest, crispiest batter ever. Chips equally as good. Worth every single penny. We also had the crab sandwich - light, not over-dressed crab generously piled into delicious malty bread. So, so glad I was flagging outside Waves!

We're in Cornwall on holiday, and I keen to sample local food wherever possible, and I must admit we came across waves completely by accident. The service was excellent and the food! My wife had the crab sandwich, which is something she really enjoyed especially as it was prepared exactly as she likes it. I had the Newlyn fish and chips and it was possibly one of the best fish and chips I've ever had, the batter was light and crisp, perfectly cooked and with good chips. It was definitely a case of quality over quantity, but that's not to say the meal wasn't ample. I don't think my meal today has been bettered (or battered!) anywhere, including Claridges in London. Altogether a marvellous experience

Waves is one of the reasons we visit Penzance each time we come to Cornwall and we’ve eaten there since 2013, when our son discovered them. As always, the staff and the owner we met were, as they always are, pleasant, courteous and helpful, especially as one of us now has some mobility problems. Now we get to the food! Barbara had a crab sandwich, prepared exactly as she requested and it was excellent. I had the Newlyn fish and chips and it was conceivably the best fish and chips I’ve ever had and I’m now, luckily, 78 years old. Perfectly cooked and with amazingly good chips, I don’t think my meal today has been bettered (or battered!) anywhere, including Claridges in London. Altogether a marvellous experience!

*Extremely Unprofessional and Aggressive Behaviour* I was hesitant to write this one-star review, but after reading numerous similar experiences about the manager/owner at Waves Restaurant, I felt compelled to share mine. As a well-travelled 50-year-old who has lived in London and abroad, never have I encountered the level of hostility I experienced at this establishment—within 45 seconds of walking in, no less. I went to Waves for lunch with two older family members. A waitress kindly pointed us to a table, which consisted of 2 x two-seaters spaced a few inches apart. It seemed odd since there were other available tables, including a four-seater right next to us, but I figured maybe they were reserved. I decided to push the tables together so we could sit closer, something I’ve done at other places without issue. Almost instantly, the manager stormed over and scolded me, claiming I could "chip the corners of the tables." While I understand if the tables aren’t meant to be moved, there was absolutely no need for the condescending tone. I explained that we just wanted to sit together, but he rudely insisted the setup was for "four people" (which, clearly, it wasn’t). When I suggested he didn’t need to be so abrasive, he exploded—literally screaming "GET OUT!" while pointing to the door. At this point, the entire restaurant had turned to watch the scene, many looking uncomfortable. The manager was red-faced with rage, and I honestly didn’t know whether to laugh or feel concerned. Needless to say, we left. What’s truly alarming is how quickly he escalated over such a trivial matter. Based on other reviews, it seems this kind of unprofessional and aggressive behaviour is not an isolated incident. It’s shocking that someone with such poor customer service skills continues to operate in hospitality. The only reason he can get away with this behaviour is because he owns the place. I strongly advise visiting at your own risk.

This is a gem of a cafe. It offers a very good choice of sandwiches, ciabatta toasties, burghers etc. and yummy cakes. It has a license so you can have a beer or wine plus many soft drinks. The coffee is also extremely good. We had toasties made with the most delicious ciabatta bread. The fillings were high quality and generous. The service was second to nine. In all, a delightful lunch experience.

We tried to get a table in the restaurant for 6 people. Myself and my wife are unable to swallow or eat as we have both had throat cancer. My daughter in law explained this to the owner. The owner refused to accommodate us as all persons had to eat. The situation was again explained but he refused, very impolitely, that he had a business to run and would not move tables for people who were not eating. We felt discriminated against and have never, ever experienced this behaviour in our entire lives. Appalling attitude. I returned to speak again to the owner who refused to give me his name and I have reported this discrimination to the authorities in Penzance council.

AVOID! Can't review the food as we didn't get past the front door. Our party of 6 wasn't welcome once the owner found out 2 of of the 6 wouldn't be eating on medical grounds. The irony is that we also had two teenage boys in our group who would have ordered and eaten more than their fair share. Very strange way to run a business and thankfully not representative of the rest of the hospitality trade who have always been welcoming and accommodating to us all.

Abusive owner/manager, will ensure to inform everyone I know to not go to this cafe. Avoid! Avoid! Avoid!!!! I went to there this morning with my 10 month old son who I’d just managed to get to sleep in the pram. I was dying for a coffee and had never visited Waves before. It looks pretty outdated and tired but thought nice and quiet, so why not give it a go? A friendly waiter greeted me, I asked if I could order a coffee, he said yes and to sit down. I sat there waiting to be served for about 5 minutes, which was fine. I had just purchased a pastry from down the road at Loaf (incredible bakery!) and got peckish whilst talking on the phone to my partner waiting for my order to be taken. I completely understand and wholeheartedly accept that eating food from another establishment was not the correct thing to do however, I was tired and really hungry so nibbled away at it without too much thought whilst waiting to order. Whilst on the phone, an elderly gentleman suddenly approached my table pointing his finger in my face and shouting at me. Confused as to who this person was, I hung up on the phone. He then said something along the lines of “How DARE you bring that (pastry) in here, they (Loaf) do takeaway coffee. YOU ARE SO RUDE, SO RUDE”, still pointing his finger at me and with a crazy look in his eyes. I was flabbergasted. All the young staff members looked so sheepish 😂 but also unsurprised as if they’d seen him act this way before? I quickly realised was the owner/manager. He then scurried off back to his table near the tills, sitting with another gentleman and evidently outraged and gossiping about me. After that, the young waiter came over to ask what I’d like to order (LOL), I said I was leaving. As mentioned above, I completely accept bringing food from elsewhere was not okay however, he could have politely said “I’d like to let you know we don’t allow outside food here.” I’d have totally accepted and still ordered my coffee and not be writing this review. I read other reviews and realise he’s not unfamiliar to acting this way to other customers. I guess if I had a has-been cafe, in an ever growing gentrified town, I’d feel threatened by great pastries too. Hope him all the best in the future of his cafe.

Really excellent standard of food but the prices are hard to justify. The portions are big, but the menu doesn’t do a good job at expressing what you’ll get either. I went for the “grilled halloumi burger” as I couldn’t justify paying £15 for a sandwich with chips, and I got a gorgeously cooked halloumi burger filled with roasted vegetables too, with a nice minty sauce and crispy, golden chips. I think the menu needs a revamp and the prices need rethinking, and I’d be back in a flash!

Called in by chance with the family, food was quite good, pricey for what it is but quality justified the price. The general waiters/servers were pleasant and friendly, the older fella I assume is the owner wasn’t particularly accommodating when it came to ordering, wasn’t willing to move tables to acclimate a larger group. I hold no brief for any shop and I know that Waves has been up for sale during the last year and it may have changed owners by now, but we've been going there since 2013 and we've never found it anything less than perfect. My wife has been finding it increasingly difficult to get about and now needs a wheelchair in Penzance (damn those cobbled bits that councils seem so keen on) but we've always found Waves are perfect hosts. The food's not cheap but it's always been good. You may find this surprising when you read some of their reviews on Trip Advisor but Waves and a couple of other shops are the main reasons we come to Penzance. If the prospective new owners maintain the standards that Waves, their owners and staff have always shown us I'm sure they'll be very successful and if it hasn't been sold but is still there we'll be back in September, all being well.

I visited Waves cafe recently, hoping for a pleasant dining experience. Unfortunately, our visit was the absolute opposite! If I could leave a zero stars review I would. Upon entering, we were met with an uncomfortable atmosphere, as the only customers in the cafe. To our disappointment, the menu's fish-based meals were unavailable, and when I requested a smaller portion size from the children’s menu (due to my recovery from stomach surgery) the owner himself approached our table and proceeded to chastise me, refusing to accommodate my request and displaying a confrontational attitude. It's worth noting that I had offered to pay full price for a smaller portion, effectively requesting to pay an adult portion price for a child’s portion. Despite this, I was accused of trying to “bankrupt” the owner, which was both unwarranted and disheartening. When leaving, and still listening to his continued chastisement, I mentioned to the owner that this behaviour might be a reason why his cafe was empty, to which he replied that it was just because there are “no customers around”. However, we soon discovered several busy places on Causeway Head as we left, eventually finding a lovely lunch spot with a welcoming and pleasant atmosphere. I had heard other people warn me about difficult experiences at Waves cafe, but I didn’t think that the rumours could be entirely accurate. Unfortunately, they were more than correct! Avoid if you’re looking for high quality personable customer service, you won’t find it here.

Lovely cakes but the manager (owner?) didn’t seem nice at all. Waitress pushed 2 tables together and he came striding over and snapped that she couldn’t push them together as they’d break off the corners. I understand that but there is a way of doing that without being so abrupt (towards staff not us). Having read the other reviews it seems this is a trend. They’re selling up so I’m guessing the owner’s customer service has meant a decline in custom. Shame as a great space and very few decent cafes in the area.

Never in my life have I been served crust in a sandwich and when I addressed this to the manager he justified it by saying ‘Do you know how much gluten bread is?’ This made my daughter feel uncomfortable . His response was rude , took the plated sandwich away and 10 minutes later my daughter had a replacement sandwich with one slice being brown and warm ! It was evident that he didn’t want to open a new loaf . I've never been to Benidorm but I have to Cornwall many times and luckily have not received this type of treatment before. I've been left feeling quite traumatised by the whole experience.

We did go back for the fish finger sandwich when we were in Penzance. It was just as good as good as I had hoped. Service was great and food amazing. Hopefully it will still be there when we visit again next year! Highly recommended.

Front manager customer service and general attitude towards own employees was awful. Made comments towards staff of having ‘bad hearing’ and that they should go ‘boots for a hearing test’ poor girl looked really upset. Found hair on a sandwich in which i ordered. As much as the place looks lovely. the management seems to be a big issue attitude wise and should be re done.

A decent place spoiled by it's manager. As you can see from the 50+ 1 star reviews here and on google maps, virtually 100% of which are about the attitude the same member of staff. I had a good laugh reading his fittingly rude and unreasonable responses to them all. I wonder if he will ever accept that it's not a coincidence that so many people single him out as an acutely rude person when there are various other members of staff working there. But no, it must be us, we must all coincidentally be delusional about one person in particular. Funny how that doesn't happen anywhere else... In our case we decided we wanted to try some crab they were advertising on the door and have the cream tea set afterwards. It turned out (some time after ordering it) that they were sold out of crab. No big deal, that happens with fresh seafood. So we politely opted to just have the cream tea set plus some cold drinks we had initially ordered to go along with the crab. As it was a "set" and came with a pot of tea and two decent sized scones we were perfectly happy to share it, neither of us wanted two full scones or our own pots of tea. So I politely asked if I could have an extra mug... And that's where it all went wrong. Now I do understand the owner's concerns that people ordering what they want isn't necessarily the most profitable outcome. But we had ordered other items, including a £5 bottle of apple juice, and attempted to buy £17 worth of Crab. There isn't ever an excuse for the way he talked to me or sarcastically shouted "thank you" as I left, but if somehow being a cheap customer was an excuse for that sort of attitude (as he wrongly seems to think it is in other review replies), it wouldn't have even been appropriate in this case. Other businesses with similar concerns seem to be perfectly capable of alleviating it in ways that don't involve upsetting people. I would have been perfectly happy to pay more if that had been explained to me in a reasonable human manner. Tip - Go somewhere else to have a laugh reading the plethora of 1 star reviews about this guy while enjoying your lunch in peace. And to the owner, I endeavour you to listen, we're not all delusional - I've never written a review like this at the 1000's of establishments I've been to in my life. Some basic human decency will make you feel much better, as well as help support your business and help retain staff.

We and our pooch received a very warm welcome inside the cafe, staff were lovely and attentive. Our little pooch was accomodated and served sausages in her very own dog bowl, truly awesome. Our meals were fresh and tasty and well presented. Cafe was very clean and staff attended to vacated tables quickly. Thank you for a lovely meal 10 July 2023.

A okay place with decent scones but, as many others have mentioned, the grey haired guy with glasses was needlessly rude which ruined the experience. He made a huge fuss about us simply asking for an extra mug

As a regular visitor to this establishment I can say quite categorically that the staff and management are of the highest standard. Unfortunately it is a fact that many visitors come with an ‘I’m on holiday I’m entitled’ attitude

Excellent spot sitting out in the sunshire, and really enjoying some great service and an enjoyable meal. Very good range of products on the menu - not overly long - but everything fresh and just right. Good choice, and close to some great independant shops.

Never compelled to write a review before. Bad experience here today. Restaurant floor manager rude to two of our party of three after we enquired politely about one of our plates not arriving for more than five minutes after the others had been served. For doing so we were accused of impatience in an indiscreet and somewhat aggressive manner witnessed by other customers. He did not take responsibility for our 2nd scampi and chips having been recorded by the waitress but not cooked on time, when questioned about this digressing into wide-ranging rants (including a prejudiced assertion about where we came from). He told us in an accusatory manner that 'our order had been changed' when we, the paying customers did not make such a change, and once on the defensive about this, demonised one of us merely for looking ('staring') into the restaurant from just outside where we were sitting. We did nothing wrong and our considerate and polite enquiries and complaint were met with persistent interruptions and stubborn defiance. In the end the late scampi and chips was subtracted from our bill with the very opposite of good grace—pointedly sarcastic remarks being made to other customers as we left the restaurant. Whilst we can accept human errors being made and acknowledged with humility, the rude, ignorant and unprofessional conduct of the restaurant floor manager made this an upsetting experience and spoiled the atmosphere of a special occasion.

I don’t understand some of the previous reviews - the haddock was beautifully cooked with a very thin and crispy batter, the chips were soft inside and crispy outside and the tea was obviously made by someone who actually drinks tea! Great lunch spot.

Great family & pet classic pub! After a day in St Ives and an afternoon at Lands End we needed a hearty dinner for 2 adults and 4 healthy appetite teens. The pub had a few regulars in, and easily accommodated us and our Border Collie. Within 5 minutes of being seated, a drinks order was taken, and upon quick receipt of our drinks our food order was taken. 1 beef lasagna, 1 Scampi, 1 Curry of the day, 1 children’s fish & chips, 2 8oz burgers and side orders of onion rings and sweet potato fries. The food was cooked fresh, served within good time and hot! The Burgers, fish, scampi and sides were very much enjoyed. The curry was mostly eaten, just a little bit spicier than expected and the lasagna was a bit too dry for our youngest palate. The bar staff and waiting staff were really friendly, and checked on us enough to show care and not impose.
