Fine dining? Read the menu, it’s all pretentious twaddle. The chef needs to go on a course with particular reference to portion sizes. I ordered Cornish lamb, we were a group of 6 and someone else ordered lamb aswell. I was really looking forward to it, I love lamb. Well we waited almost an hour for the food, and I needed a magnifying glass to see it. The lamb measured approx 3 in x 2in, and we were charged £24 for that! We complained about the size and the waitress was very apologetic (I suspect she’d heard all these complaints before) and the chef rustled up 1more paltry portion for each of us, and said they would not charge us for the lamb. Admittedly it tasted really good, but come on they are surely taking the mick! I can see from previous reviews that complaints about the portion sizes have been going on for some time, so why on earth don’t they do something about it?

We were visiting Fistral bay from London over the bank holiday weekend. This restaurant is part of a hotel where you can stay if you want. We didn’t stay at the hotel but we booked a table for dinner on one of the days. Food was horrible and extremely disappointing. It was extremely salty to the extent that we couldn’t finish our plate. I had order hake loin and my husband ordered gnocchi. Gnocchi was hard and one of the worst I have ever eaten, not to mention the generous portion of salt it came with. My daughter ordered chicken and again the breast was overcooked and the saltiness in gravy overpowered any taste it would have had. It was not value for money meal and we left the restaurant hungry. I will not recommend this restaurant and will definitely not be visiting it again.

Read a review a few months ago of this restaurant and cant agree more The service was great!! The starters were good. The mains were not good. We ordered the monkfish with risotto and sides of cavalo nero; and broccoli and Cauliflower cheese. The cavolo nero was cabbage. The broccoli and cauli cheese was just cauli cheese and overcooked. We didn't eat these and I did complain. Not sure if I've been charged for those yet as haven't had the bill.... The monkfish was perfectly cooked but Jesus the risotto was salt salt salt. I couldn't eat it. Squid ink is salty so adding any extra salt when cooking would be a bad idea. I think the chef has seasoned without tasting first. It was inedible. The service was great. Staff were amazing. Setting was lovely apart from a little to bright in the evening... maybe mood lighting would be better after 7pm? Desserts were good. Blue cheese of the day was from York which was disappointing... I own a cheese shop in the Westcountry and with so many incredible blue cheeses from Devon and Cornwall, not sure why you would pick Yorkshire 🤷♀️ we have so many incredible producers here. Shame because the hotel is really nice for the price (winter/spring stay) we loved the gym and the spa. Restaurant lacking

Tasty food, but very small portions for such a high price. £20 for a vegetarian curry containing a few pieces of butternut squash and 3 pieces of spinach, served in a small soup bowl so left feeling hungry, despite having a starter too. I understand this is fine dining, but to have this priced the same as the meat dishes on the menu was disappointing. Lovely staff and good service.

Spent a few days in Pentire and Newquay for my wife’s birthday and we shared a lovely evening in Dune. The manager, Jack(?), was so welcoming and, although the Tasting Menu was unavailable, talked us through the menu. This unhurried approach set the tone for a lovely dinner. We shared three starters - mackerel, birds liver parfait and confit lamb’s belly - which were all beautifully presented and tasted as good as they looked. For our mains my wife had a duck dish and I had the cod loin. Both were perfectly seasoned and tasted divine (we even shared a fork of each other’s dishes to avoid food envy). I don’t normally take food photos but on this occasion I did so I’ve attached them. Great food, great service and our favourite meal of the weekend. As a post script, we also had a spa day with cream tea in the hotel which was rather lovely too!

I really wanted to be able to give this restaurant 5 stars but sadly the food let it down. Location, service and atmosphere was outstanding, so was the starters BUT the mains were dreadful. Everything had mounds of salt on it, all 6 of us said the same on our mains. The portions were tiny, £22 for a finger size piece of cod with a bit of dill mayonnaise..that was with no sides. What the hell guys…you are right by the ocean, surely you could have spared a cod loin each rather than a quarter per person, it’s embarrassing how you feel it is okay to serve that and charge £22. Comical but we surely won’t be returning.

We are visiting Fistral Bay on holiday and booked a table at the Dune for our last night. We were warmly welcomed and offered a lovely table overlooking the bay. There was an excellent selection of food on the menu and we chose a wine from their summer wine list. Starters where wonderful, a great choice and we each had something different. All excellent but my stuffed courgette flower was exceptional. Mains and dessert were all beautifully cooked and presented and tasted wonderful. Overall, we had a fantastic meal and evening, nothing I can complain about.

Really disappointed with food and attitude of the manager. Ordered the Miso aubergine with cous cous and pomegranate. What came was 1/2 a very small aubergine on a handful of cous cous. It was so tough I couldn’t even cut it. The manager kept saying it ‘was meant to be tough’ and reluctantly offered to have another one ‘cooked’ for me. When the second one came out there were no pomegranates on it. When I asked they said they’d run out, but no alternative offered. Complete rip off at £18!!! Service charge automatically added to the bill even though there were two of us.

We dined here for breakfast and dinner. Would not recommend. The service was poor, the ‘manager’ was too busy setting up tables to even come and ask how everything was, our breakfast was very stingy and cold. The apple juice was fizzy (we notified a member of staff and was told oh yeah we know we’ve changed it about half an hour ago.) no apology. We ate for dinner and it was possibly the worse meal and experience we’ve had. Our drinks came out 25 minutes after we ordered and it wasn’t busy, I had to ask where they was, we’d already finished the snacks and starters before they arrived. Our mains came - my partner had the cod, it was so salty he couldn’t eat it - there was so much tartare sauce which also overpowered everything. I had the halibut, it was the smallest piece of fish for £22/£24, my sauce arrived in a jug when I’d halfway eaten through it, there was a piece of very burnt chorizo too which nearly broke a tooth. We told our waiter when they finally cleared the table, she apologised and told us she would speak to the manager. We decided to order puddings thinking it might be a saving grace - sadly it wasn’t. The milk chocolate and peanut mousse came and was covered in off whipped cream. I told the waiter, again she said I will alert my manager. We asked to pay with the shock of we didn’t even have a discount. The manager never came. The next morning I ended up with sickness, diarrhoea and bad cramps, we had only eaten at your place so I know it was the food you served. Would never recommend.

Fantastic view, lovely service and a nice setting, however we were a bit underwhelmed by the food…The Lamb was nicely presented but basically raw, although I ate it as didn’t want to send back as it was my wife’s birthday dinner….her Plaice was “ok”, perhaps a little over cooked, the Courgette side was lovely, the portions were very small. Several people complained of the temperature and despite best efforts, it was…the door refused to close properly and windows were still left open so a “cool” breeze was evident throughout our meal…I was dressed in short sleeves expecting the weather to be a little better, but they could have closed the windows. We were tempted to revisit but the other thing was the menu was very small….to be fair it may change daily, but if it doesn’t I would be disappointed if I was staying here expecting a culinary delight every evening…you would be eating the same thing a couple of times as not everything would have been your choice (A an allergic to shell fish as an example, which was 25% of the “mains”). Would I recommend? Sadly not, and in reality its a 3.5 starts based on the food, but the place is great and the staff great, so I am happy to keep it at 4……had there been a bit more choice, especially of fish, it would again rate higher and we would have tried it again.

After our third visit to Dune, we felt it was time to leave a review to recognise the team that work tirelessly to provide a fantastic experience.Living locally we know how important it is to support local businesses out of season - now more than ever. We always make sure we support those businesses that care about their customers, and focus on keeping locals wanting to return time and time again. Dune is one of those businesses. The staff give you the time and attention to make your evening enjoyable - no request is too much. The food is delicious, cooked to perfection, and across three courses is plenty to fill you without feeling gorged. Our most recent visit was in place of what should have been our wedding day. WOW! My husband and I stayed at the hotel 15th - 17th July and we pre booked a table at the Dune Restaurant for the 16th which was our 3 year anniversary. They did everything they could do make it special for us (especially under the circumstances with Covid-19), the service was amazing and the food - I'm still salivating thinking about it. We started off with a couple of cocktails and opted for a main and dessert. To our surprise, the waiter appeared with two complimentary glasses of champagne, homemade bread and a starter to share that was absolutely mouth watering (marinated burrata) and also on the house! The bread was delicious. I ordered the crab linguine for main which was so delicious I would gladly jump in my car and drive the 6 hours to Newquay from Peterborough to have it again. My husband had the steak which was superb. We both had the lemon tart for dessert. After polishing off a carafe of red wine, we were in our element. What an absolutely special anniversary meal with really attentive staff, 5* food and an amazing view. I would definitely love to book again - perhaps we'll see you in a year for our next anniversary! Stayed here a few years ago, and quite enjoyed it. Doesn't feel the same now. We signed in the restaurant (they have a separate bar area for dinner too) and I must say it's one of the most disappointing meals I've had In a while. 2 stars and not 1 only because the waitress was so polite. I think our fish dish may have been given in error as Hake was ordered but what was delivered certainly wasn't Hake. Potatoes were dry and school-dinner-like, veg was not fresh, wilting and poorly cooked.Unfortunately seems they have gone a long way down hill.

The food admittedly was GORGEOUS, although the portion size was more suited to that of a Borrower. The service, however, AWFUL!! Took twenty minutes once seated to get a drink, that I had to leave my seat to request the waiter to take the order. A further 30 mins to receive our starter, 45 for a main and again, had to chase the waiter for desserts. Such a shame! Beautiful location, lovely food, the service was just atrocious. Ruined the whole experience tbh. I wouldn’t waste the money. You can have far superior experiences at your local Maccie D’s, which we will be headed to as we are starving after our main meal of ‘ 4 mini slices of lamb, 4 beans and one roast potato’ .. I wish I was joking... and £100 for the privilege! The only waiter that had anything about him was Antonio, he couldn’t speak a word of English but seemed to actually care. I pre booked a table for two with sea view at 'The Dunes Restaurant' today (Mothers day). On arrival we were shown to the Bay Bar, where we were seated at a very small round side table. I asked if we could move to one of the empty larger tables with a view, no problem he said. We then Sat looking puzzled for 15mins while the waiter got our drinks. After another 15mins without attention I returned to the reception to ask why we hadn't been given a menu yet. Almost immediately the waiter came over and gave us a bar menu, I asked were we not to be seated in the 'Dune restaurant' as booked, and where was the restaurant menu. He replied, we are a little busy today so we would be dining in the bar. This was totally unacceptable for a special mother's day treat, so he went away and got a more senior member of staff who informed us that they were only serving 'spa package customers' in the restaurant today and could not cater for us even though we had booked for dinner. We left feeling so very let down. What a poor show from a so called quality establishment, the day was ruined and one my better half will probably never forget.

My friend and myself always try to book an afternoon tea whilst holidaying in Cornwall, this year I pre booked at the Dune restaurant. During booking I was asked if there were any dietry requests. I gave a few, no butter on the bread for one, no egg filling and one no chocolate in the cake selection. I got one out of the three, no egg. The service was very attentive and I was given a latte and a peppermint tea at no extra cost which was good but sadly the food itself wasn't. Firstly the sandwiches, three very small offerings of 1 smoked salmon on a dried up brioche, 2 mashed up avocado and poached chicken which was tasteless on a square of rosemary foccacia and three ( the buttered one!) a finger about a sixth of a normal sandwich of granary bread with a sliver of cucumber on. The scones were so dry they were almost powdery and had a shop bought appearance to them. Lastly the petit fours, three soggy chorus buns with assorted fillings, ( all had chocolate on them) a raspberry delice, which was ok and then a salted caramel batter type cake. We weren't asked if everything was ok, perhaps there have been complaints previously! I so wanted it to be as amazing as the view from our table but unfortunately it was very underwhelming and disappointing!

Following a recommendation, we booked this restaurant. The look and feel was good. Felt like a good London restaurant. The service was OK but could have been better and more attentive. My main course really let things down. I had a fillet steak. The steak was tough, not cooked well and cold. It felt like it had been left to stand too long. Shame as I was hoping for better considering the cost. I would have said something but the staff when coming to ask if everything was OK were already walking away by the time they had finished asking.

We are in the restaurant as part of a half board package. The choices offered were good and the quality and presentation of the food was lovely. There was a pleasant ambience and for the time of year was quite busy.

Over a three day full board stay the meals were generally of a high quality - modern British in style, with a good selection of wines. In the mornings as well as a normal full English Breakfast there were freshly cooked pancakes, frittatas, and other options available. Service was relaxed but attentive and the food arrived fairly promptly. All the while you can look out over Fistral Beach. What could be better?

The food here tastes great and is worth the wait. Sadly the restaurant itself leaves a lot to be desired. The location couldn't offer a better view of the bay, but the decor doesn't do it justice. Tired and dull, I think the place needs the services of a designer with imagination to lift the ambiance above that of an institution. There are more welcoming restaurants in the area, so relying on great tasting food as the only attraction may not work for much longer. We won't be eating here again unless the restaurant decor changes to match the food.

Food is great and the service just as good. Very attentive and helpful staff who can advise about their food and drinks and also if you have any allergies. The restaurant is within the hotel so parking is sometimes a problem as there will also be guests at the hotel and spa. Suggest you just grab a local taxi to take you there and back; the staff will happily order one for you.

The view was ok, even if the closest look is in the parking lot. Scallops were great, fish average. Service nice. Almost empty restaurant on a Friday evening

Staying at the sister hotel I wanted to experience the best of both hotels by dining in the dune restaurant. The first thing that hits you is the warm ambience of the place which is always encouraging. The food is very reasonably priced and you get a very sizeable portion - I had the hake, smashed peas and handcut chips which was very flavoursome and not a bone in sight (always a plus when having any fish) followed by a selection of ice creams and washed down with a cocktail which was excellent value for money given the size of the glass! Can't fault the menu as you are spoilt for choice and even if nothing grabs your eyes you can wonder up to the sister hotel which is open to non-residents. Value for money, choice and quality - what more can I say!

I probably wouldn't return here unless a friend or family was having an event and I was invited but I would advise them to go elsewhere. My boyfriend rang this morning to book a table for us in the afternoon, however when we arrived the man at the bar said he couldn't see anyone under our name, we waited a few minutes whilst he continued to look and nope, there was no table booked under our name so he said we could have a table anyway and sat us down and went off. We both had no idea what was going on! About 5-10 minutes later a young lad brought over some tea but no milk. We thought surely he'll come back with some milk but no, another 10 minutes went by until a lady came over and asked us if we booked, we said yes and explained, we felt as though they thought we were lying about booking, anyway off she went and we still had no idea whether we were getting our afternoon tea or not. If it was up to me I would of left, as we certainly didn't feel welcomed or very comfortable but my boyfriend said let's just give them the benefit of the doubt and just see, so we did. About another 10 minutes later the woman comes over with our afternoon tea but we still had no milk so asked her for some. A man from the bar then came over with a jug of milk asking our area of tables who ordered extra milk, we thought not extra milk, just the milk we should of had with our tea in the first place but hey ho! The afternoon tea itself was nice but not amazing and our tea was fairly cold by the time we got around to drinking it.

I stayed with my boyfriend for one night in the amazing Fistral Beach & Spa, our double room was very nice, we enjoyed the spa and the big indoor swimming pool, everything was perfect so we thought that also the restaurant could have been able to meet the expectations. Unfortunately we were totally wrong, the starters were poor, the prawn cocktail was low quality and the smoked duck chewy. Then the linguine with mushroom have arrived to the table already cold, maybe we can save the roast sirloin that was pretty good but definitely it wasn't sirloin meat but roast veal!!! Moreover the waitresses and waiters were kind, nevertheless the service was lack of attention, they kept to bring courses without the proper cutlery.

We dined here on Monday night after a day of exploring Newquay so we're really hungry and we were not disappointed. I started with the Ham Hock and asparagus terrine served with bloomer bread and Quail Scotch Egg all were delicious . For main I had 10oz sirloin and my partner had harrisa spiced lamb and both of these were cooked to perfection both melt in the mouth . We still had room for desserts which we had Eton mess and duo of tarts which one was lemon and the other was orange and we're just what was needed to cleanse the pallet after the first 2 courses . To my surprise the restaurant also brought out a plate excellently decorated with chocolate piping truffles and strawberries to wish me a happy birthday.

if you are staying at the hotel- why bother trailing into town to spend the evening among the crowds and slot machines? Dont hand about; make a bolt for the Dune restaurant- I can recommend the Seafood Tagliatelli!

Ok so it's August and it's busy in Newquay but we booked and turned up on time only to be told by the passing sour faced (head?) waiter 'no tables you'll have to wait in the bar' after which he moved swiftly on, leaving us (including two 14 year old girls and an 8 year old boy) standing nonplussed in the lobby.

It started promisingly, white table cloths, cutlery balancing on its narrow end, lovely view over the bay, trendy lighting and the not too camp, slightly aloof waiter to take our drinks order on the cusp of being too long a wait. Hubby had sweet potato gnocchi to start, it was so dense it clung to roof of mouth like peanut butter, and yes I know gnocchi can be a little claggy but this was a different league. I had ham hock terrine which, a few mouthfuls in I started to doubt my taste buds as it started to taste like tuna, and unseasoned tuna at that! I also think there maybe should've been some sort of chutney with it, not sure if it was advertised on the menu, but it was lacking it even if it wasn't. I ordered the harrissa rack of lamb with the fondant pot as stated on the menu, but was advised, after waitress had returned to kitchen with order, that I couldn't have fondant potato. I was disappointed as I love fondant potato, but I asked for some mashed pot, which wasn't on the side menu but I didn't think it would be too difficult to rustle up. She returned again to advise that Chef could not do this. I asked if it was chefs night off, but having only received a European shrug of the shoulders and deciding that I didn't fancy lamb and chips (the only other starch option), I changed my main course to rib eye and chips with peppercorn sauce. Our boy ordered sirloin and hubby the John dory. All the mains came, and all were over cooked. The steaks were ordered medium, but grey beef was what arrived. The beautiful John Dory had been turned into a cotton wool mass atop unrefined lumps of chorizo. The boy was so hungry after a day of surf he just cracked on with the sirloin (which I had to switch with him as the waiter had placed my rib eye infront of him stating it as a sirloin and vice versa). The rib eye and John Dory went back along with the peppercorn sauce which tasted very much like caramel, but The boy loved it, he thought sticky toffee pudding had arrived! Upon 2nd try the rib eye came back in a more fitting state for consumption however the John Dory was saltier than the Atlantic surf we had been gulping down at Crantock beach all day and so this dish went again uneaten. As a positive, the chips were great and the bin end cote du Rhone was lovely. We didn't hang around for dessert, fearing what would transpire and wanting to save the lovely waitress/waiter another embarrassing kitchen failure.

Typically British mid summer weather (light drizzle), thought we'd venture out from the excellent lewinnick lodge in search of a walking distance eatery that would fill the empty belly from a day of bodyboarding at crantock beach and dispel the salt water taste. Wow, wow, wow!! This is not the worst food I've ever tasted, but it comes close. To be fair to the waiting staff, they were great. The view across fistral beach was great. The decor was pretty cool, as was the clientele, every thing else was set for a really good night out, then came the food!

Having read other reviews about Dune Restaurant which is part of Fistral Beach Hotel, Newquay I was a little worried how our evening would go but it couldn't have gone better. We was welcomed into the restaurant and shown to our table positioned so that we could all look out the glass front towards to the beach. Staff were very attentive and we were not rushed like some other reviewers had commented on. Our waitress Anna paid us enough attention and was very quick to sort out our sons meal which came out not quiet to his liking. Food was faultless and the menu was not extensive but had enough to choose from.

Lovely restaurant with beautiful views of the sea, beach and sunset. Sent down from their sister hotel and they happily served us wth no reservation or knowing that we weren't guests at either of the hotels, wide selection of deserts and main courses. Would like to stay in the hotel if I return back to Newquay.

I'm not sure if it's allowed to have crushes on breakfast staff, but if so, then the guy who served us this morning has officially won my heart! Seriously, though, he was incredibly kind and professional. If there are any awards for exceptional service, he deserves one!

The golden lion pub in St. Ives, Cornwall is a big golden lie. The only semi accurate portion of their image is the lion. All of the food tasted as if it was found inside the rotting, months-old carcass of a poached lion. The onion rings were wet and pustular, they tasted as if they were fried in the neck oil of the surly bartender who took our order. The testicular mushrooms were the best thing we ordered even though the garlic mayo on the side resembled a tepid bowl of curdled man-milk. The burgers were obviously cooked on a griddle that hasn’t been cleaned in years. The food had remnants of meals from years past. Giving it a vintage, nostalgic quality. The chicken was shriveled and flavorless with enough mayonnaise goop on it to feed a family of 4. While waiting waiting for the fhood, we had time to take in the odor of unwashed children and great-grandpas ashtray. The table we sat at had a stickiness that I’ve only felt on the gummy underside of a second graders desk. 3 hours later, while writing this review, we taste these rancid flavors once again through accursed burps. This truly remarkable combination of disgusting furniture, surly servers, and god-awful food has truly cemented this place into our hall of shame.

Myself and wife went here for Sunday carvery it was £15 each and we was disappointed with the quality and the service, we paid for our meals via the on line system and the waitress bought us our drinks and our tickets to take up to the carvery counter, while we was waiting we noticed the chef who was cutting the meat was sweating profusely and wiping brow with his arm, when I got to the counter I asked him for beef and pork and he cut them about 3 inches thick! Far too thick to cut with a regular knife easily, and the pork had so much white fat around it, the yorkshires were disgustingly awful, the road potatoes were very hard and tasted stale, the squares of stuffing were very nice tho as was the buttered carrots and the cabbage, unfortunately the Swede was a bit tasteless and we had to scrape the gravy barrel to try to get some gravy out!! Overall a disappointment to be honest, even the table we was on was wobbly, also to point out as well it was very very warm in there. Unfortunately we won’t be returning, we might of just been unlucky because the pub was busy and is in a loverly location, so it might of just been a bad day.
