Called in for a quick pint on my first visit to Macclesfield. Was early, so quiet, with only one local. Looks like they have a varied selection of beers. I opted for a German lager. Nice friendly publican who said he has been there for 40 years. Close to train station.

The landlady was an absolute nasty rude person. Little wonder the bar was empty. Very dirty floors and walls. Outdated furniture. I dared to ask this frosty publican what the ABV was on a beer I was considering and instead of getting an answer she rudely walked away and muttered "if you don't like it go somewhere else". I decided not to lower myself to Her obvious abysmal standards and proceeded to order four beers. The beer itself was flat and tasted a tangy off flavour.. the glass was dirty and I noticed when this person handled the glasses She had her fingers on the inside of the glass ! Hygienic I think not. After giving Me a really unfriendly look I had to ask the landlady for a receipt ..which she was obviously at pains to do. (Strangely She wrote the receipte on a paper rather than a receipt from the till.) To my astonishment on returning from the men's toilet which again were filthy dirty my friends stated She went up to them and proceeded to bad mouth Me. Laughable she did not find it appropriate to actually vent Her vile anger to me personally. So bad was this landlady's behaviour I felt it necessary to contact Camra as well as the local newspaper. Avoid the pub Waters green tavern at all costs. Disgraceful behaviour..disgusting beer and a very dirty dated Bar.

A lovely pub with a good selection of hand pumps ales, wines, quality spirits, the owner has been spending money on the bar area (see pic) and re upholstering the seating, theres a real open fire and a reasonable amount of people coming and going, young and old, the toilets have been renovated a few years ago and still look good and they are clean (unlike many other pubs) there a pool table and darts board, it is a rarity for Macclesfield which seems to be losing pubs and gaining bars with shouty people and eye watering prices, yet the Tavern is reasonably priced.

Looking for a decent ale having been unsuccessful earlier in the evening, my neighbour suggested here. Known locally as a good pub for drinkers. For a wet evening, midweek, the place was quite full and we got a couple of seats around the corner, away from the main bar. The decor isn't great but you come here to drink I guess. The extensive beer mat collection above the bar is a nice touch. Little glasses of beer next to the pumps and went for the darkest that wasn't a Porter, Barnsley something. As I'd had a girlfriend from Barnsley once, I gave it a try! It was OK, better than the 'Golden Hen' I'd had earlier. We struggle to find somewhere in Macc that serves good cask ale but this is one of the best. My friend John who used to run Porters was helping behind the bar, if only he was still there, that was a great pub.

Dropped in here one Saturday afternoon with my elderly neighbour. He is 97 and told me my Dad would like it in here, he's probably right although for me it was a little lacking in atmosphere. There's a good selection of beers including on this occasion the extremely popular Salopian Oracle. As my parents live in Shropshire I know the beer quite well, it's popular all over and the barman knew the location of the brewery and engaged us in conversation. You can't say fairer than that, not many people in but good beer and a friendly landlord.

We used to live in Weaverham and often walked to the Riverside for a drink or food. They used to do 2 main courses for £10 which was good values for money. I know those days are now gone but after our recent visit I don’t think we will be returning. We booked a table for Sunday lunch for 4 people. We ordered drinks which came promptly and then ordered our food. We only ordered 4 mains, fish and chips, sea bass and 2 x steak and ale pies. We waited over an hour for our food, others who arrived after us received their food so we asked how long ours was going to take and were told they were just plating up. 10 minutes later we finally received our food. The fish and chips did look lovely and was a healthy portion size, the pies were well filled but mash potato was a bit on the small side. The main issue was the sea bass. There were 2 small fillets with a few crushed potatoes underneath, a spoonful of frozen peas, 2 green beans and 5 mange tout. Now for £17.95 I expected more. I’m not a big eater or a quick eater but I finished my meal first, and I knew I wouldn’t be full for long. How much do vegetables cost? Surely some carrots and tender stem broccoli wouldn’t break the budget? I did mention this and I was not charged for my alcohol free G&T, but I couldn’t wait to get home and have something to eat, disappointing.

The food was exceptional the steak ale pie was devine and had our guests talking about it for weeks after! Compliments to the chef! Lovely party area, when decorated with balloons and banners it was a really good atmosphere, the bar were happy to play music on Spotify all night. Really spacious and just a really lovely evening.
