I was sad to see the last review. Like many other people we visit Wards kitchen regularly. It is a friendly good value traditional cafe with lovely home cooked food and the best cheese scones for miles around! It is a shame that the cafe is upstairs, although you can buy the baked goods in the shop downstairs if you can’t make the climb. Having said that, many people struggle to get up the stairs knowing that the effort is worth it.

As such a homely oldfashioned type of place on the first floor above the shop. However the coffee was very disagreeable, nothing like a proper cappucchino and the fruit scone crumbled to tiny bits, no chance spreading any butter or jam on it. A pity.

Worth the climb up the stairs. Home cooked specials at great prices. Very popular, friendly service, good food, tired interior but spotless. Recommended.

After lots of visits to eateries in Bexhill we found this one almost by mistake whilst browsing in the wonderful shop downstairs. Great cafe, spotlessly clean (including the toilets). Lots of choice on the menu, plus specials of the day. Today was lasagne or steak pie, for £5.50. We opted for jacket potatoes with salad. Very reasonably priced, good environment and pleasant staff. Very busy, so obviously popular. Also take away cake service. All seemed home made. Will be back!

you have to climb some steep stairs to reach this cafe, but the scones are well worth it. The staff were friendly, a good place to stop mid shop.

Perched above Wards Clothing Shop. A little lunch and tea shop always full at noon. Reasonable home cooked lunches, cakes and tea/coffee. Locals love it. Friendly staff. Looks out into the street.

We visited Wards for lunch They have a menu board outside giving the daily menu, simple home cooked food, which is what a lot of people want Staff were very attentive The restaurant is on a first floor, up a steep flight of stairs so is not ideal for those with difficulty in walking

Often visit when having a walk along the prom or going in to town. Great for reasonably priced wholesome home made food. I have yet to find better scones! Stairs are steep, but it is worth it.

Bit expensive. Cheese scones are really good but are getting smaller and dearer. Staff very somber. Not much personality.

My husband & I have had lunch here quite a few times. The food is good and reasonably priced. I believe the hot meals are made on the premises. The eating area is up a steep flight of stairs, so no good for those with mobility problems.

Great little place for people that like pubs the breweries haven't commercialised. Great beers and ciders that are different from the usual everywhere and a great stout (called Blacks) that's a lovely change from Guinness. They do good cheese plates and pork pies. Open log fire with very friendly staff. The owner is there in the bar most of the time chatting to everybody everywhere. He loves his 'work' and creates a very welcoming, open atmosphere. Nothing is fancy, but it's all very authentic and honest. If you're in Rye and looking for a pleasant distraction for a couple of hours, seek it out. You''ll probably be pleased you did.

During our recent visit to Landgate Bistro in Rye, we were thoroughly impressed by the exceptional dining experience. The food was truly outstanding, showcasing the chef’s dedication to sourcing local ingredients and preparing them with flair. You could tell he has spent time in Rome as there was a clear Italian influence to some of the dishes. Each dish was a testament to the restaurant’s commitment to quality and taste. We really loved the lobster risoni and the carbonara. We actually ended up ordering a starter after our mains instead of a dessert as the food was so lovely. The ambiance of the bistro was both charming and inviting, providing a perfect setting for a memorable meal. The service was impeccable; the staff were attentive and friendly, making us feel genuinely welcomed. We would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to our waitress, Caoimhe, whose warm and professional demeanor added a special touch to our evening. We highly recommend Landgate Bistro to anyone seeking a delightful culinary experience in Rye. We look forward to our next visit

We were an extended family of ten.We are regulars as we live nearby and in the past have generally been satisfied but unfortunately things did not go well today. We ordered drinks but they took half an hour to arrive. The meal choices had been given some time previously giving the names of who was ordering what but clearly the staff were totally unaware. They arrived with two starters but didn’t know who they were for.We had to struggle to remember what we had chosen weeks ago. Then another two arrived.Eventually there were still two starters outstanding but the time they arrived everyone else had finished.Exactly the same happened with the main courses and the wine that was supposed to go with the mains was so late in coming that we rejected it as no longer required. My main of salmon was very poor as it was fishy, overcooked and dry. This service shambles was repeated with the desserts. We complained to the manager who cancelled the service charge on the bill and reduced the drinks prices by 50% but this did not compensate for the disappointment on a special occasion. We like to come to this hotel but the quality of the food and service has to improve and they must recognise that patrons on the same table must all receive their food at the same time. This is fundamental restaurant procedure. We have already previously booked for New Year’s Eve so this is going to be make or break as to whether we and all our friends and acquaintances maintain their custom at this hotel.

Coffee shop located inside Tescos. Seems to suffer problems with its dishwasher they have an official sign printed to state it’s out of order. Staff seemed more interested in preventing people sitting down from 1 O’clock on a Sunday. Did have the misfortune to go there for a coffee once and find due to a problem with their machine no coffee was available. Shame I never knew before my 2 mile walk to get there.
