The Picture Playhouse in Rother

Me & the missus pulled into this place for a pre-gig dinner… fill our tums up before a long night at the De la Warr, no fuss food, or silly advance booking- Wetherspoon can be a bit ‘take-it-as-you-find-it’ , especially our local Tunbridge Wells branch, which frankly , is rubbish . What a pleasant surprise this one was- the staff, the service, the food was superb ( steak Tuesday- so we had that … really well cooked, and delivered in a short time. Efficient management were present- so everything seemed to be how it should be .

Since this spoons is extremely popular with the local area it is extremely busy between 6pm and 8pm. So is very noisy....

Called in here for brunch today and was surprised by the fact that the food we ordered at the bar had reached the table by the time we sat down. Although it was quite tasty it was almost stone cold so had obviously been sitting at the counter for more than a few minutes beforehand. A shame as it had been quite well prepared otherwise.

3 if us went on a Saturday lunchtime. It was packed but we got seats and chose our meals thinking we would have to wait ages, but, less than 1/4 hr later our meals were brought to us. Same with our puddings. You have to order at the bar but they have plenty if staff so did not wait more than a couple of minutes. We all said how nice the food was, would definitely go again

Potions a little small on dome meals

Barmaid was rude! Manager was unhelpful! Receipt said “Hugh.” Don’t know the try hard waitresses name who looked 12 but ID’d people that looked older than her!

Just went in for a pint, staff were friendly and very helpful. Did notice the beers cost more here than in Hastings witherspoons

Met with friends for food and drink. Great choice and value.

Been here once before. Went for lunch with my wife. Very nice food which didn't taste processed. Really helpful staff, self service tea and coffee machines, credit and debit cards accepted, very spacious, not stuffy or claustrophobic. Very reasonable prices too.

Food very basic. I suppose you get what you pay for. No trimmings. No atmosphere though. Found it very boring.

Great Local Sussex ales beer selection.

Had the chicken burger,came cold and no taste chips were ok, came with a glass of wine and my glass was dirty had lipstick on glass, won't be back again

Disabled Toilet on ground floor, easy access. 🤫 Very polite bar and waiting staff. 😁Lift from ground floor to the first floor, for the toilets. Prices reasonable despite inflation. Breakfast is served 8am to 12.00 noon. Afternoon special deals available. Refills free on hot drinks with the mug supplied. Parking & Disabled Parking outside. 👍

Alright food BUT being a type 1 diabetic, I expect to have Pepsi MAX if I order it, this is the second time I have been given full fat after specifically asking for sugar free. My blood sugar immediately shot up to 25.3mmol which is a very dangerous level! Staff need training on the importance of this.

Friends catch up so we don't really care where we go spiced rum is spiced rum whatever the surroundings and who doesn't like "small plates" to soak it up.

Large pub with a good selection of beers which are good value. Staff can be quite rude and the food is not good.

You can't fault Wetherspoons for saving old buildings. Absolutely lovely . Very busy on a Saturday though

One of the best Wetherspoons I've visited, and on this occasion the best cod and chips I've had so far. Served up in 10 mins and piping hot. Lovely chunky piece of cod.

The food was good and could have only been made better by being freshly prepared The table service was very quick however the bar service could be improved for visually impaired people The verbal directions were hard to follow.

An old art deco cinema converted with lots of sympathy and original features, even old projection gear. Otherwise a typical spoons good value & busy most times. The large on the roof smoking area is a bonus even covered when raining.

We have been to various weatherspoons throughout England and have yet to find one as good as Bexhill. Would highly recommend it. Staff and service are exemplary.

I had been to this pub before alone and told my family what a beautiful historic venue is. A recent family trip took us to bexhill and we had a quick stop for food and drink here. It was EXTREMELY busy. I ordered wine and drinks at the bar and commandeered a very nice member of staff to help me carry drinks to our table which needed a clean and stuff removing. He was super, nothing too much trouble. Food arrived promptly and was great and exactly and described. If there are bad reviews on here it must be for a previous management team Also, if you like trains. Sit right at the back by the big window!

Quality of food is good for what you expect from this chain. Place is always clean and staff are always friendly. Would recommend their breakfasts with unlimited coffees. Machine also does cappuccinos, mochas and hot chocolate which is a nich touch

Big place but it's always busy, and sometimes, it's not as clean as you'd like it to be! Had something missed off our order almost every time we've been... must be good though as we keep going back!🤪

Good Table service using app. Consistently quick, food and drink table service.

I ordered a mixed grill with JD sauce. The sauce didn't arrive. The meat was tough, chewy and cold. We were in a group of 14 and one of our group who is over age and works in a pub had her drink snatched from her hands by the manager due to him thinking she was not old enough. When we showed that she was old enough the manager refused to back down or provide another drink. Ruined the whole experience. The service was also slow and the staff not too welcoming.

Came here for lunchtime drinks with a friend. Huge pub and quite busy on a Friday lunchtime. Drinks prices are wonderfully cheap and food was also reasonably priced. Filling and tasty rather than great. Staff are very hardworking and friendly. Really pleasant 3 hours and I recommend.

It’s a weatherspoons so don’t expect fine dining, but I personally don’t think you can beat it for quality and price. As a family we ate here a few nights whilst visiting family and had great food every night. It arrived really quick and was really hot. The new ramon noodle bowl they do was especially tasty and a must try. Loads of space inside but it did get quite busy on some nights and there’s a lovely area with a fire for cosy evenings.

We had lunch twice in The Picture Playhouse when we stayed for a weekend break. Both times it was very busy but the young, efficient staff seemed to handle it really well. I just wish when they brought food/drinks to the tables they took away empty glasses/dirty plates on their return to the kitchen/Bar??? There were a lot of tables that needed to be cleared when we were there??? The area with the open fire is great. Really lovely. Toilets are always clean too. It's also fantastic value for money so what's not to like????? We will be back again next time we visit Bexhill on sea.........

It's a Weatherspoons, but what a GREAT Weatherspoons 👍. Plenty of tables available which were constantly monitored by friendly staff who kept the restaurant lovely and clean and free of all previous customers plates etc. The drink selection is excellent and the food choices are top notch, exactly what you would expect from Weatherspoons. 🙂

Mainly nice to meet friends but during the week when quiet some staff refuse to put the TV on which spoils the atmosphere when having a few beers

good beer and food lovley place to viset

after waiting an hour an a half for no food at another restaurant we came to spoons knowing we'd still get food late evening. Sat down and was eating and drinking within 10 minutes. Service was amazing, food was pretty good (above par for a spoons). Should have come here in the first place! Shout out to the other tables who joined in singing happy birthday to my mate!

We went here with friends - was cheap and cheerful. The food was all very dry and small portions and the toilets were a bit of a trek but some of it was ok

Warm and comfortable great food

This building has been sympathetically and imaginatively themed according to its previous use (an old cinema). The decor is in good condition. Three main 'areas' (with 'sub-areas') - bar seating, indoor restaurant seating, and outdoor roof garden seating. The roof garden is lovely, especially in warm weather, and is sheltered from any wind. Food prices are very reasonable, with drinks being competitively priced too. Table app ordering (and payment) is quick, easy, and efficient. An overall enjoyable experience was had by the whole party. Usually, it's not too bad mid-week, but Friday evening and weekends can get very busy. Food is excellent value for money together with great quality and taste. Menu food selection is not extensive but certainly covers enough bases to have something for everyone. Often have a log fire at the 'top end' in the colder months.

Very busy for a Sunday. Entrance on a one way street which makes it safer to access. Big and deep building set on multi levels. Bonus for seniors, there is a lift to the toilets. Real fire in the lounge bar where you can watch the trains going by. Terrace for sunny day drinking. A very enjoyable visit.

Enjoyable Wetherspoons pub, housed in a historical, beautifully restored old cinema picture house. Comfortable and clean, served by pleasant and hard working staff. Great value food and fair priced drinks, enjoyed a very nice curry, rice, naan and poppadoms, with a pint for just £10 What's not to like!

Great service and food at good prices

Beautiful! A lovely pub with tons of room. A great venue for singletons, couples, groups and families. An outdoor seating area upstairs which is stunning. A huge variety of drinks and foods (same as all spoons pubs). Thoroughly recommended!

Love a spoons, no frills, quick and easy service, tasty grub, bloody good value.

The staff did not clear away crockery or cutlery, the tables needed wiping, behind the bar floor was disgusting, and staff kept walking over lime slices on the floor, staff were not polite or smiled to customers.

It's a lovely place for a spoons, the food was brought out quickly however drinks took ages (approx half an hour) to be brought out because they were busy and it did mean I had finished my food long before my drink arrived. Staff were apologetic and doing the best they could in the circumstances.

Large group of us came for lunch, drinks and food all delivered promptly. Food was hot and nice. Not too busy, staff friendly and helpful. Toilets were clean. Good value for money.

Had to move seats as table was designated as reserved for a quiz five minutes after I'd sat down and ordered food and drink.

Not a pleasant experience at all. Entirely my fault for ordering bangers & mash. Without question, it was worse than an economy meal on a coach flight with a budget charter flight! Plus, I was disappointed to learn I can no longer purchase a bottled coke. Whilst they insist they sell 'coke' with sugar the boxes containing a generic Cola, containing aspartame belies this fact. Very frustrating when due to allergies, I must ask for a sugared drink, then must immediately return the drink because it has come from a budget generic Cola product. Can't always blame the staff as they've nit been trained, or possibly simply don't care enough to tell customers who ask for 'Coke' aren't told the truth - that whilst you're being charged for a 'full fat' sugar taxed Cola, the drink has been swapped out for a generic product made with aspartame which costs Whetherspoons less. Won't return again. Lesson learnt.

What a great place to go , the building is awesome

We regretted eating here the last time, today was the final nail in the coffin. The cod and chips( full size) was pathetic, the cod was tiny and I do mean tiny, probably a quarter of the size of a normal piece of cod from the chip shop and cooked rock solid. The peas were cold on both my meal and my wife pie and mash. My wife lucked out though because her pie came with luke warm instant mash, yummy. This wetherspoons was always a decent place to go, decent food served quick but since the prices have gone up the quality has gone down the toilet. We will never visit again.

Really nice pub, large seating area and well furnished for a Weatherspoons. The food was quickly served and was hot and tasty, the waiting staff were polite and friendly, However what really spoiled our evening was the service from the girls behind the bar who were rude, impolite with no manners, it appeared that they obviously did not enjoy their job and did not really want to be there, such a shame.

Love this place! Yes, it's rowdy. And yes, it attracts a 'certain element' with their horrid kids screaming their heads off, leaving an apocalyptic mess on the floor when they leave. But you just can't beat the incredible prices, speedy service, beautiful interior and tasty food.

Popped in for a quick drink and sat upstairs on the terrace. Lovely sunny spot. Great for a cheap drink after a stroll along the prom!

Yesturday we decided to visit bexhill, we live in eastbourne. Popped in for a cold drink after our bus ride and before we went for a wander along front. On return we ordered all day brunch, gourmet steak, large vodka /lemonade and large glass of rose wine. Bill came to £24.15 which was very reasonable. The steak was perfectly cooked rare . Egg with brunch was lovely and runny as it should be. Service was very quick and the staff are exceptionally polite and hard working. The place is spotlessly clean. The roof top garden is beautiful , we felt so chilled out we stayed for another drink and soaked up the sunshine. We have visited approx 30 different Wetherspoon's ( I am always I interested in the history of their buildings) and this one is the best by far .

Best Wetherspoons I've been too. I work from here a lot when not in the office. Staff are friendly and food and beer is cheapest around!

Always happy to eat here. Good quality food for a very reasonable price. Like the idea of being able to order from your phone rather than trying to get the attention of a staff member or going to the bar. App could be easier to navigate but just being picky. Staff are friendly and helpful. Would highly recommend.

Sat in the rooftop garden, which was lovely. Didn't eat so can't comment on the food. Drinks, good value for money.

I walked over from Hastings to have breakfast here, because I'd heard this is a special Wetherspoon. It didn't disappoint. Not only is this a beautiful art deco building, but its beauties are clearly being cared for by the company. So the interior is a feast for the eyes. It still has a theatrical feel to it. A bonus for me was that in the sunken area you can sit within sight of an open kitchen and watch the chefs at work. You do read about exploitation of staff by Spoon's and examples of questionable cooking practices. But this kitchen looked vibrant to me, with everyone working as a busy team and laughing and joking. The proof of that was in my Full English Breakfast, because I was served a perfectly runny egg, something I don't expect at a Spoon's. In theory, all Spoon's breakfasts are the same from pub to pub; but this was the best I've had. It was all hot! And the waiting staff were excellent too. With a Pepsi, I had all that for about £8.
