Stopped in for a light lunch. Amiable front-of-house staff; however, the food was truly terrible and the attitude from the 'chef' even worse. 'Cod bites' consisted of tiny portions of cod drowned in batter - an insult to a lovely fish. On being asked, "How is your food" (apparently by the 'chef'), the honest answer was, "Too much batter". He didn't take it well and said that he was "Sorry to hear that you feel that way," and then took it upon himself to 'explain' that "This is how we do it here." By this, it appears that he mistook me for a foreigner due to my accent from living for some years in Africa. He is very much mistaken as I'm a Londoner by birth and have been living just up the road for nearly 10 years. He offered to give me my money back but, as I'd already picked out what fish I could find and eaten some chips, I said, "Not necessary." While I appreciated the gesture and would have left it at that, he insisted on taking me up on 'how we do things here'. So my advice to this chef is: 1) See criticism as an opportunity for improvement. 2) Feelings have nothing to do with complaints - the food was, quite simply, rubbish. 3) Customers don't like being dissed. 4) Don't try one-upmanship on customers (it doesn't work). I'll let future customers decide from the pictures if they want to pay £7.50 for a big greasy pile of batter.

A proper pub. A proper proper pub. Exactly what I'd expect of, and dream of, when I think of a quintessential English community pub. Great bar staff. Super efficient service. Good beer. Good food. An old watering hole in Rye. Right outside the train station. I could tell that they do food well by just reading the menu but unfortunately I was here in the evening so make did with a Merlot. Older people who are regular clamor the space as fire and friendly smiles light up the room. The washrooms were super clean. 10/10

Making the very best of a terrible situation in Rye town. The water for the entire town was off so the lovely landlady could only offer us a limited menu based on what they could do. We gladly scoffed a ploughman's down and a free sausage for our puppy and left happy. Lots of places in Rye just closed but these guys did the absolute best they could with what they had. Lovely place and people.

What a fantastic bar crew. We were made to feel very welcome. The food was excellent apart from the hash brown which was soft not crispy but did not stop me eating them. Neat cup of tea I have had in an age. But the experience was made better by the 2 ladies serving. They laughed and joked around with the customers. If I lived here this would be my local.

My wife, daughter and I went to have a drink here today, we have been coming to Rye for years but never this pub. We walked into the garden area to sit down, we were finishing off some ice creams, (my wife had 2 bites of cake left)at the time and a man,(possibly the owner) with 2/3 dogs came from a building at the bottom of the Carpark/ garden and started shouting “NO THANK YOU”towards us! Not sure if he was talking to us or not we all looked at each other and he then shouted it again. My wife said are you taking to us or something similar, and he then said we could not stay as we were eating our own food! My wife, who has a small piece of cake left said to him even a bit of cake and he replied she was being rude? We said we were going to finish them and order a drink but he said we was not allowed. I said fine we’ll walk back out to the road and come back in again, it would have taken Less than a minute for all of us to finish the ice cream and cake, but he wanted us to leave. Saying there were signs everywhere. He was very rude and didn’t even listen to our explanation. He did this in front of other customers who were sat in the garden area too, if this is how he wants to treat his customers, (if he is the owner) then maybe he should get some signs up saying a please and thank you cost you nothing extra.! We did not stay and went elsewhere and will not be going back ever!

Visited with friends with allergies. Unfortunately the menu was not accurate and we were served food we were told was safe when it was not (one of our friends is celiac and we double checked the food was gluten free which the menu stated was so and the staff confirmed) . When we double checked we were told it was an error but the staff were defensive. When I explained one of our other friends has a fatal nut allergy and we wanted assurance she was safe, the land lady asked "has she got her epipen though?" I was too shocked to respond properly. Staff then came out to our table and gave us a ten pound note asking us not to leave a bad review. The mind boggles. My friend went to the toilet before leaving and on the way to the bathroom she overhead the landlords and staff slagging us all off. As if we were terrible customers for asking them to not kill us. Overall an awful experience and we couldn't tell whether the landlords and staff truly didn't care or if they were too stupid to realise how dangerous and illegal it is to mislabel and serve food that's could harm if not kill someone.

We were extremely disappointed with our Sunday roast today. For £13 per serving, the quality and portion size was awful. I ordered a beef roast and it arrived on a desert plate about 8 inches in diameter, not even a child size portion! There were 3 tiny slices of beef, 3 tiny spuds about an inch square 3 sprouts, a few carrots and a desert spoon of peas! I requested horseradish sauce and was told they didn't have any! I rejected the meal and In fairness, when I complained and asked for a refund, they agreed with no argument.

Probably one of the most welcoming and friendly pubs I’ve been to for a long while. We had 3 adults, 3 children and a baby eating here. The children had the kids breakfast and the fish fingers and chips. I had the homemade lasagne (generous potions of garlic bread!) and the other two adults had the full English. Clean plates all round! They’ve got a high chair for little ones and while there’s no baby change, if you ask behind the bar, they’ve got a changing mat you can use. Good, solid food, and lovely staff. A really decent experience and meal.

Had a meal with my girlfriend and 3 kids, aged 3, 4 and 5. I tried my burger, the meat was burnt and dry so I asked my girlfriend to take it back and let them know I just wanted a burger that wasn’t burnt. She then came back to tell me we had been kicked out. I was shocked. The owner said we hadn’t been happy with anything since we came in and called us ‘scum’(which is a lie as we hadn’t mentioned or complained about anything at all). He kicked us out, not letting the children finish their food and gave us a full refund… We did not want a full refund as everything else was as we expected and we were going to stay longer, let the children finish and order more things as we had an hour wait for our train. I have never in my life been kicked out of a restaurant, especially with our kids. Owner was obviously having a bad day and took it out on us.

We had quiche and new pots...quiche and chips of which the pub replaced on request from new pots...and a cod, chips and peas. I wouldn't say the pub is renowned for it's cuisine as there are other establishments in the area with far better food...and just as well because the quiches were microwaved as to become rubbery...frozen oven chips and frozen...(from a cardboard box) not fresh cod. We'd come back again for the beer and garden.... but not for food.

Not too much to say about this friendly community pub other than that it's a solid option for unadventurous beer drinkers, just a 2 minute walk from Rye station. Some cask ales, several lagers on offer, traditional pub grub, and a two-bench outside seating are to the front/side. Friendly staff, this is a place to linger over a number of pints. Prices are as expected in the area (the popular model medieval of Rye). Named "Cinque Ports" after the street it's on, which in turn alludes to Rye's former historical significance as one of the "five important ports" in the area. Craft beer drinkers should opt for the nearby "Waterworks" micro pub instead.
