Booked for a meal with friends mid week but arrived to find there was no reserved table and the pub was busy with drinkers and people playing pool. We had looked at the menu online and my friend who booked was told that the menu would be the same on the day. It was similar but the chicken bites did not appear to have a choice of sauces unlike the online menu and there were differences like the bites not being described as chicken thighs or the chips being homemade/rustic. Friends still decided on the chicken bites but when the food arrived we were very disappointed. The fries looked pale and appeared to be very similar to branded frozen oven chips you buy in supermarkets presented on their own in a white bowl. The breaded chicken bites, in a separate white bowl, arrived with no sauce whatsoever (menu said spicy sauce I believe) and looked very unappealing. We queried where the sauce was with the lad who was serving us and he seemed very perplexed by our request! He went back in to the kitchen and came back with some sauce drizzled over the top. The chicken bites/nuggets were dry and tasteless, my burger was ok but with pale fries and there was no care over the presentation. Plonked on to cheap white plates and bowls. I don’t know if it was because it was mid week but the photos on the website did not represent what we were served! We also had a dog jumping up when we were trying to eat. It is probably a good drinkers pub but the food was pretty poor. I wish I’d taken photos to show the difference in what we were served and what was advertised online!

Unusual review to follow, but thought I’d post a review to assist anyone thinking of The Waggon as a venue for a funeral wake/celebration of life or any other type of function. Sadly I’ve been here twice over the last year to attend two funeral wakes/celebration of life functions. The venue is perfect as they have a large room that can be adapted perfectly. Staff are helpful & on hand. Buffet food was good & plentiful. Only comment I would add is there was a serious lack of crockery, just a suggestion that perhaps some good quality recyclable plates would be a good idea, preferable to using saucers or bowls for buffet savouries. Good location & would recommend.

Disappointing meal for price found the food very average and no imagination to tantalise the tastebuds. Was hoping for at least homemade chips! Won't be going back again. Can't fault the staff who were welcoming and friendly.

Fabulous evening relaxing on a sofa by a roaring fire as chef cooked our meal. Great menu and quite honestly my chicken couldn’t have been more moist if it had died from drowning. Excellent wine list - we chose an English wine which was very nice! Back to the fireside for coffee. Perfect evening. Thanks for looking after us

We live in London but travel to Southmoor regularly, and booked this restaurant with slight misgivings having had some poor experiences in the past. But since its takeover, we have now visited three times and I feel I have to write a review in the hope that others can appreciate the amazing transformation. The facility has been upgraded to become a welcoming and stylish place, somewhere to relax and enjoy friends and conversation, the hospitality and service are friendly and efficient, and the food!......I don't know who is the chef, but he or she is nothing short of an artist. The menus are uniquely imaginative, and the ingredients often unexpected, but are creatively and deliciously paired. I wanted to order everything on the menu just to see how each item looked and tasted! The items I DID order were exceptional. The execution perfect, and the presentation beautiful. The party I was with last time tasted each other's dishes and the verdict in every case was overwhelmingly positive. I have rarely been so impressed. This is 5 star dining at good local pricing. Southmoor - you have a treasure!

Three for dinner on a Friday night. New management have transformed the interior which looks very high quality. However the menu needs an overhaul and certain aspects lacked attention to detail. The menu could be scaled back dramatically to concentrate on great flavours and great simple local pub food. Everything tasted the same and some dishes were sold out by 7pm… Also the gin offering needs improving eg. serving orange for orange gin instead of lemon. Staff are friendly but lack finesse. Improvements to be made

One of the best steak meals you can have. Filet steak and fries and Caesar salad were cooked to perfection and were very tasty. So good that we are now booked for Sunday lunch. Service was very friendly. My only suggestions are to offer jacket potatoes as an alternative to fries and to sort out the garden which is a mess and puts us off eating outside.

Seems like a really lovely pub, and staff were really friendly too, but £9.50 for a pint of Moretti and half a pint of cider is daylight robbery! It’s a sad state of of affairs when we live in a country where 1.5 pints costs more than the minimum wage! Sorry but for this reason I wouldn’t be back.

The staff were great, explaining the menus/specials and checking with the kitchen re vegan options. The food however was very poor. Maybe because we were towards the end of service, but the vegetables were lacking in quantity and overcooked & the veggie burger didn't taste right and wasn't heated all the way through. And to be charged full price for a vegetarian roast dinner (basically just the veg that would accompany a full roast) seemed a bit much. We won't be going back.

Nice food but terribly slow food service. 40minutes from ordering to receiving starters then the same again from starters being cleared to receiving mains. 2 hours for 2 courses, we would have ordered desserts but had to leave. Two waitresses + one bar person, only a couple of other tables eating so plenty of staff to tend to the amount of customers, hate to think how slow it would be if busy. Drinks arrived promptly. When the mains were brought out the waitress said there was a portion of chips still to come, they never appeared and no one table checked during mains so didn’t have the opportunity to mention it, they did take the price off the bill though. Small niggle, greasy/wet foot served on flat boards and slates, grease and liquids inevitably leak onto the table. Also no finger bowl or hand wipes given with lobster. Asked a couple of questions about items on the menu, waitress couldn’t answer. Small niggles, I know but along with the wait and missing food we won’t rush back.We didn’t book ahead, no one asked for our details for track and trace and no sign of a Q code anywhere to scan.

Came for lunch with my mother last weekend and what an incredible experience it was. The new management who have taken over have completely transformed the place compared what it used to be like. The food on offer was incredible and there was such a different and diverse menu and specials board on offer. I had the rump steak and my mother had the half a lobster and we were blown away with the quality of food. The service was superb from the staff and nothing was too much. The covid safe measures they have in place are superb and made us feel very comfortable. We have lived in the village for 10 years and we have never used the pub much until now. We are so happy to finally have a place we can go for drink and food and can highly recommend a visit. We had a brief chat with the new Manager Luke in regards to our wine selection to accompany our dish due to the wine list having such a diverse selection on offer. Thanks to Luke and his team at the Waggon & Horses for such a great experience. We will see you very soon!

Located on the main street in Southmoor, approximately six miles west of Abingdon, this traditional pub is clearly a vital resource to the local community. A great bar counter dominates the pub, and although my visit coincided with a major football match viewing of this was restricted to just one of the several publicly accessible areas - albeit the main one. There are at least two other indoor areas, one of which appears to be a dining room, and there is also an enclosed beer garden with an inviting play area for children. Much as I'm not a huge fan of screened sport in pubs (and even less of a fan of gaming machines - there is one here), this establishment attempts to cater to as many tastes as possible - and it appears to do so successfully.

I then started to tell him what we wanted and he walked away mid order and didn’t come back. Service was so slow food took ages to come out and when it did the brioche bun for the burger was stale/toasted. Obviously had been frozen but was awful! Easily fixed by having fresh buns! Food overall was good but I’d hate to go if it was busy

Eight of us arrived for lunch and found this a really nice pub with pleasant young lady serving. Unfortunately it went downhill fast from this first impression. All three Ale pubs off and some lager off too, so with a very restrictive menu we became six. Food ordered together and very simple (jacket potatoes and baguettes) but service spread so wide two had finished well before last served - poor kitchen management. As a PS hand dryer in gents missing (screw holes in wall) and no alternative. Location with new homes nearby could be a gold mine but this ship needs a captain who can sail.

We visited the Waggon and Horses, in Southmoor, on Friday 10th June. It was my granddaughter’s 8th birthday, and as it was a dry and warm evening we wanted to treat the family to a meal in the beer garden, so the children could run around and not spoil anything for other diners inside the pub, by being too noisy! Our party comprised 4 adults and 2 children. My wife and I don’t live in the area, but whenever we visit our daughter, who hasn’t lived in Southmoor for long, we often call into the Waggon and Horses.Unfortunately when the meals were brought, mine was missing, it had been completely forgotten. Apologies were offered, but when mine actually arrived, over 10 minutes later, the others had almost finished theirs. Mistakes do happen, but exactly the same happened when we visited for my granddaughters 7th birthday in 2015, whilst on a visit to see the progress with the new house build. On this previous occasion, 6 meals had been ordered, and only 5 turned up. Mine was missing, again. At that time, one of the kitchen staff came out to apologise and I was given a free beer. On the most recent occasion, however, although I mentioned the previous mishap, I wasn’t offered a beer or a discount on the bill.We all found the food to be disappointing, and the beer wasn’t particularly good either. With all the new houses in Southmoor, and more being built, the Waggon and Horses has the opportunity to be the pub of choice for many more people, but only if they can ‘up their game’.My wife and I are both CAMRA members and will probably still pop in occasionally, when in the area, with the hope that there will be some improvement.
