This is what a pub should be like. Great atmosphere, full of village locals and a proper landlord who knows what he is doing. 10/10.

A proper olde English village pub, comprising of 2 separate bars and a fantastic garden for which which summertime cries out for! The hospitality is second to none. We stayed with family and popped into this pub from time to time over the week and have not a bad word to say. Karl and the team provide great service and a good selection of beers and ciders. Unable to comment on food as we unfortunately didn't have the chance to eat here.

By far the best and most welcoming pub in the area. Totally unspoilt. Super beer served from the barrel and yesterday I had a very nice Caesar salad to go with the beer. Nice and traditional inside with a lovely walled garden with plenty of cover.

Had a cheeseburger and chips and it was delicious. Real beef 1/4 pounder, salad filling, was really a generous portion. Proper thick cut docker chips. Outstanding. Good range of beers on tap. Had a Butcombe bitter which was lovely. Friendly service and lots of seating in the garden under cover, so COVID safe. This is a well run pub, and the landlord is highly respected in the village.

We love visiting this pub after a walk along the hight street. Always a warm welcome, a lovely warm fire and different sections of the pub. We really like the small room to the right, sitting by the fire and people watching onto the high street. There is also a really sweet garden to the rear of the pub, its small but very pretty. Very reasonably priced given the area. We've only ever been for drinks so can't comment on the food. The pub is also dog friendly!

Traditional pub in the heart of the village of Hartley Wintney. Think old, low timbered bar with a small seating area and large open fire in the public bar and then to the right, another seating area and smaller open fire. There is a large patio garden at the rear that is great in the summer and holds the weekly pub quiz and Summer BBQ events. A firm favourite and the Mars bar vodka is always a winner. Perhaps not on a Sunday night though...

It’s quite hard to find somewhere to eat on the high street in Hook, but we saw the Waggon and Horses and went in. Unfortunately the kitchen had literally just closed for lunch (it closes at 2.30pm) but the lady behind the bar checked with the kitchen and they were happy to cook for us. Lunch was delicious! The chips were amazing, great portion size. There were open fires in both bars (very welcome as it was a bitterly cold day) and the staff were lovely. I would highly recommend this pub.

Having parked our bikes right outside, we had an excellent lunch on the very spacious patio at the back. The patio is covered with an awning which makes dining outside possible even when raining. Super service from our waiter and the chef came out to ask if my gluten-free adapted meal was alright for me. Well filled chicken and bacon sandwich with home-made potato crisps was delicious I was told, and the fish and chips were also very good. Relaxed atmosphere. Recommend a visit.

The food is unpretentious. Corned beef hash and doorstop sandwiches set the tone. I love the tiny saloon where the bell is rung for service. The public bar is lively with Anglo Saxon banter. This pub is small but has a friendly interior with lovely staff and a choice of two different rooms (although both are quite small). There is also a garden which is lovely to sit in if it's a nice day/evening. If you go for food then there is plenty of choice, options for both light snacks and more substantial meals, the specials are good as well and all the food is surprisingly good value, especially considering the quality of the food. If you're just going for a drink then this is also the right pub for you, the evening has friendly and welcoming village pub atmosphere and a lovely place to have a drink with family or friends. We travelled down from Reading for their Beaujolais Nouveau Breakfast and were delighted to see that this tradition had maintained its standards after a recent licensee change (I understand that one of the barmen has taken over - so well done sir!)Good plateful with pots of tea; toast and jam accompanied by, of course, the wine - one bottle per person of you order the "full monty". It was very good too and the lunchtime menu looked so good we were very tempted to stay! However, we had the wine in gentle time and finished with a pint of real ale before the four of us caught the bus home!. My Wife and I popped in for a quick drink, we moved in locally at the start of the year and wanted to see what the pub was like. The pub sells traditional ales and good solid hearty pub food with reasonable prices. We did not eat on this occasion as we had eaten earlier, however what we saw what came out to the other tables and the meals appeared to have good sized portions, the dishes were well presented and the smell of the food was great. The service, the choice of food and drinks was great with the staff and patrons being very friendly indeed. The bar has two small bars as you walk in (one on the right and one on the left), the decor is warm, welcoming and I cannot wait to revisit during the Winter as it will be warm, homely and very cosy. The garden at the back of the premises has plenty of tables and space and when we went it was a nice little sun trap until poured with rain (needless to say, I was thankful of the rain as my garden needed it).Great pub, wonderful find, looking forward to popping in again, hopefully to eat this time as well.

It's great to see The Wagon continuing to be a real pub. A locals pub. Sad to see Neil leave after such a long time but Kacy (his protégée) has continued with the same ethos and added a few ideas with some food options in the evening for drinkers needing some food. Rather than the other way around. Great to have a decent juke box and no piped music!! Great beers I've never had to send back a bad pint or request a 'top up'. Maybe the wine selection could have a couple of better bottles included. And white wine should always be properly chilled. But that's all minor stuff. These 'wet pubs' are sadly declining in our villages so The Wagon deserves the support of all serious drinkers. Cheers!!

As a regular visitor to Hartley Wintney, I've been meaning to come here for some time. However, as they stop serving food at 14:00, it's been hard to find a time when I was able to get here in time. Unfortunately when I did find the time to visit, I found the food here to be so terrible that there wasn't a single good thing I could say about it. The food here might be cheap, but it's cheap for a reason. The service could be better as well as they are understaffed and treat customers differently. The menu here isn't particularly large, with the food being limited to burgers, sandwiches, fish, sausages, bacon and eggs. Despite being a pub, many pub classics are missing as they only sell the simplest of British food here. There is also no dessert menu here, which is unusual for a pub. The starters, which are listed as 'light meals' on the menu here, offer some better variety as pub classics such as prawns and pâté are available. However, there are only five starters available to choose from. With nothing exciting at all to be found on the menu, I went for the simple order of pâté followed by a 1/2 pound cheese burger with bacon and a side of chips. The pâté here was really bad and it was by far the worst that I have ever had in any pub anywhere. The pâté is accompanied by toast and lettuce, with none of the usual chutney, jam or pickles to be found anywhere. The pâté itself was almost definitely not home-made as this tasted just like the cheap budget pâté you can find in supermarkets. This meant that it had a one-dimensional flavour as there was only the ground meat and fat with nothing whatsoever added to improve the flavour. Unlike most pubs, there was plenty of toast here though, with this being the first pub I have ever been to that don't offer enough pâté to go with the toast. Usually the opposite is the case and you end up with a lot of pâté and little toast. Unfortunately all four pieces of toast here were burnt quite badly and as a result they were overly crispy and had a strong unpleasant burnt flavour. The salad here was simply lettuce with no other ingredients or season whatsoever. As far as lettuce goes, it wasn't bad, but it was no better than average. The burger here was really bad. The biggest problem that it suffered from was that it was absolutely swimming in tomato ketchup and mayonnaise. Both of these sauces were overly sweet and they overpowered the other contents of the burger. The sheer amount of sauce also made the burger difficult to eat. If you tried using your hands, the contents slipped on the sauce and fell out of the bun, while the same thing happened if you tried cutting through the burger. The burger itself was both dry and gristly. I had to isolate the burger from the sauce in order to taste it, but when I did so I found it to be rather bland, so the sauce didn't seem to covering up much flavour here anyway. The bacon in the burger was overly fatty, but whenever there was meat I found it to be extremely tough and almost leather-like. The cheese in the burger was a large congealed mass with an unpleasant taste. Where it had congealed, it was completely separate from the other contents of the burger and it was easily removed as a single layer. The only good thing about this burger was the bun, which was almost muffin-like in terms of texture. It's a shame that the contents were so bad. The burger also came with a small pot of coleslaw. This appeared to be home-made, but unfortunately it was extremely bland, with the only flavour being a slight hint of mayonnaise. The chips were also bad as they had a hard skin, but they weren't crispy. The hardness extended a fair way into the insides and it was only a small area in the very centre of the chips that wasn't hard. The service here was reasonable for the most part as there wasn't a great deal to it. You order at the bar here, then after that it was simply a case of taking a seat and waiting for your food. Unfortunately it took a while to initially place my order as the pub seems to be understaffed. There are two bars here in two different rooms and, while there were two people working, most of the time there was only one person tending both bars. Some draughts were also only available in one of the bars, which meant that there were further delays as the bartender had to travel into the other room multiple times to pour certain drinks to then bring them back. When I asked if I could pay after my meal, I was told that I couldn't as they don't allow tabs here. However, later in the afternoon somebody who was a tourist visiting the pub for the first time was allowed to keep a tab for their meal. I was pretty disgusted to see this as I have no idea why the bartender decided to treat me differently from another customer. I could have perhaps understood if the other customer in question was a regular, but it was evident from the overheard conversation that they were visiting the pub for the first time. In my opinion, all customers should be treated equally, but that doesn't appear to be the case at this establishment. The value here seems fantastic at first glance as this place is significantly cheaper than your average pub, with the prices being not far off greasy spoon prices. For example, a simple burger and chips will knock you back as little as £6.20 here. The starters aren't as good a deal as the mains though, with the prices for these being around £5, which still isn't too much. The food is cheap here for a reason though as it's far below average and you're much better off cooking something at home than eating here. If you don't have the time, you're still better off microwaving something or eating at a low budget café, as you'll still get a better meal for less money. The pub looks a reasonable size from the outside, but when you get inside you realise that most of the space is for staff use only as this is a poky little pub with very little floor space. The bar area is quite packed as the crowds seem to drink in the limited area around the bar areas. There are only eight tables in here in total as this is place is designed to drink in rather than to eat in. If you don't sit by the windows, which are mostly tables for one or two, then you are stuck with the tables against the back wall. In this are the lighting is minimal and the ceilings are quite low, creating a dark and cramped area that isn't particularly pleasant to sit in. The place is decorated with a few trophies and old black and white photographs of the village and it doesn't feel much like a traditional British pub when you're inside.

Really enjoyed my lunch with friends I've not seen for years. Flavour some soup, beautiful burger with loads of cheese. Crispy chips , delicious pate. Will definitely be going back.

We always go to the Wagon & Horses for a Friday night drink before fish and chips. It's normally busy with a local throng of noisy, friendly folks but still the service is pretty good with the aid fo the infamous bell! Nice garden out back for a warm summer evening. They always have a very good selection of "Special Beers" many of which are local brews and should be sampled but are not for the faint hearted. Some are 5% and above. Give it a try

I dont think you can beat the Waggon at lunchtime in Hartley Wintney. Great value for money, the food is really good pub food. Just had a lovely burger, around me were people saying how good their lunches were. The secret here is simple food, well cooked, well priced. Really friendly staff, beer is good .. what more can you want from lunch!

Landlords Neil & Linda have run this pub for 30 years or so. Its where all the locals drink. The beer is always well looked after and the prices reasonable. The food (I believe that its only served at lunchtimes) is delicious. Generous portions and reasonably priced. Last time I ate there, i ordered a ploughman's lunch and couldn't eat it all.The outstanding pub in the village.

This place is a great pub but should not be listed in the restaurants review and can not be said to be nr 1 in Hartley Wintney albeit maybe in a pub section.

Nice pint spiolt by foul mouthed customers/regulars, seem,d like a saloon bar from a cowboy movie as we entered the place stops, very uncomftable, bar staff very abrupt and quite rude. same without the throwbacks would make a nice pub. Definatley not a pub for females,

After living near Hartley Wintney for 2 years, after a 20 year break, I finally made it back to the W&H for a pint. A Thursday evening, both fires alight the public bar buzzing and a pint of superb Gales bitter. This is what a pub should be, a sanctuary from the world that serves great beer. Well done the Waggon & Horses.

A real pub which is not trying to be something it isn't - It's a pub and a very good one.The staff are real with a personality and remember what you had in the last round - The beer is good and I suspect that the food will be basic but equally good.A real Log Fire and a warm welcome - Really wish there were more pubs like this left and one nearer to us in Yateley.Well done and long may tou continue.

The Wagon & Horses can't be rated as a restaurant, but as a pub it's great. It's unusual, as it seems to have escaped the usual refurbishments given to English pubs over the last 100 years, including the advent of credit cards !Well kept draft ales are a treat. Loved the log fire with hearth flush with the bare wooden floor.Foodwise, there's an upgraded bar snacks menu with no deserts. If you like gastro-pubs this definitely not for you. If you like an old fashioned pub with lovely ales you'll love it.

The Wagon and horses is a pub first and foremost, its the only highstreet pub in Hartley Wintney. Its from another time. I've only been in the public bar which has low ceilings, is dark, old fashioned and very blokey. It is certainly unpretentious. It provides a nice contrast to the the more sophisticated establishments around. A good place for a pint or two before a curry with the lads. I did not eat there - and I was not in the eating bit - that said, I'm not sure I would eat there as the atmosphere I witnessed in the public bar was lively.

Got here too late for lunch (at 2:15pm on a Monday), but we had a couple of pints anyway and were glad we did.As others have mentioned, this is a proper pub: friendly, popular but not crowded, with good beer. I had a pint of Dark Star Green-Hopped IPA. Wow. What a tasty pint.

Working in Hampshire for a few months and stopped here for a pint. What a great atmosphere, full of locals, all having fun and spilling out on to the high street. Gave it a Notting hill like feel. The bitters were excellent, wine also good. Expensive for a village pub we thought, but great value if you had to pay for atmosphere. Didn't eat but food looked good. DD

The Waggon attracts good company. The range of regularly changing beers is impeccable. The lunchtime food is delicious, traditional and very good value. It is my favourite pun of al time.

There are not many "proper" pubs left in the UK but this must be the best of that breed. Small but perfectly formed, good beer, friendly staff and great customers. Food only at lunchtimes but great value for money.

well worth a pint if you are passing, the best real pub for miles, not for foodies but a real pub with a great buzz and very reasonable prices.

The epitomy of the perfect pub - great beer - fresh food (lunchtime only) - open fires for the winter and courtyard garden for summer - even the ducks pop over the road to eat.Landlord/lady are wonderful and staff are always attentive. Two small bars with open fires generally full with a mixed crowd of friendly locals.

Driven past this pub several times and always noticed it busy and people having fun! One Saturday night took taxi to pub with my wife (10miles from home). Had drinks in rear garden - fabulous romantic setting. Ended up spending the whole evening in the bar chatting to great people. Bar staff are cool, locals are friendly. A pub/bar for food or drinks. Everyone is made welcome. Wished I was more local. 10/10.

This has been my local pub for 30 years, and Neil and Linda have never failed to run anything but a perfect pub. Atmosphere and drink is first class. Unfortunately they do not do evening meals, but the lunchtime menu is superb. The ploughmans lunches (3 or 4 varieties) are superb, the best i have ever had .. and portion size is on the great side of generous, whatever you order! The garden is lovely, well tended, secluded and picturesque, but equally nice is sitting out front, on the spacious pavement, watching village life ... I love this pub.

I've been visiting this pub for about 10 years, anything from a weekly Friday Lunchtime visit when I worked in Harley Wintney, to the less frequent special pub lunch. Every time I have visited I have never been disappointed with the Beer or the Food. The specials lunch board usually has a lovely selection of amazing baguettes, soups, and hot meals. It never fails. The HSB seems to taste better here than anywhere else. The staff are always very welcoming and friendly. If you go in the winter you will be treated to a roaring log fire, in the summer the beer garden is secluded and lovely. If you were looking for somewhere to take someone to show them what a real English pub is, and should be, this is the place.

Very rare to find an "old old school" pub like The Wagon & Horses in Hartley Wintney.Very welcoming, roaring log fire, friendly locals, this really is the perfect pub!100% better than the chain pubs that unfortunately keep popping up in the local area, I hope this village remains chain free, (sadly Costa has taken root here)

Had a pint of ale and cider with my husband when visiting from Melbourne Australia in June of this year (2012). The barman (sorry forgotten his name) was extremely friendly, and not just because I told him I was a fourth generation Hartley Wintneyian who emigrated as an 11 year old in 1980.The pub was clean with a warm friendly atmosphere that I love about old English pubs, and this should never change as this is what people love about a true local.Loved it, and hope to be back again soon.Amanda Scott (Evelyn and Tony Mason's granddaughter formerly of 54 Sandy Lane)

I have visited on a Friday evening with a friend. The food was great, service fast an efficient. Only downside to our dinner was the fact we have been sat in a small room with lights everywhere (spot lights, chandelier and wall lights) which was an atmosphere killer. We have enquired about dimming or turning some off, which was not possible (all on one circuit), we were not offered to be relocated into an area of the pub with less lights and more atmosphere.

Unfortunately Daisy’s Tea Room is closing for good on 25th May 2022 although Serendipity will continue to trade. Make the most of this quaint tea room while you can.

We had a lovely lunch here. Food was delicious and service was 10/10. The staff are absolutely brilliant and really go out of their way to provide a great experience. My daughter who is usually quite fussy got through all of her lunch, they had some great kids food options! Would highly recommend

Freshly made food quiet and a very nice atmosphire. Lots of gifts and trinkets and the staff were very interesting to talk to. Apparently there are tables and chairs outside and you can watch the lambs.

I’ve been coming to Tylney since 2010 for special occasions such as birthdays, Christmas, anniversaries etc. sadly it’s gradually gone down hill and this will possibly be my last visit. I dined at the oak room this week and when the menu was put in front of me i had no idea what to order. The menu was outdated, stuffy and very overpriced. Long gone are the days where you sat in the library, had your amuse-bouch and marvelled at what to order. Your order was taken prior to your arrival at the oak room and your wine was waiting at your table for your arrival. I ended up ordering by eliminating either incredibly boring options like soup and ludicrously expensive ones like £47 Dover sole. I had the whipped goats cheese starter and the pork main. The food tasted nice but it really was nothing special. The menu was just lacking in creativity and provenance. Back in the day you’d walk in the oak room and there was live piano, candles on the table and the silver cloche covered your food and was beautifully removed when the dish was in front of you. All these details made the extra cost worth it. When you pair it all back sadly it’s just not worth it anymore. I know places like Tylney are incredibly expensive to run so some adjustments have to be made but these are the things that made it special and kept us coming back over the years. Places like The Pig have left Tylney behind. Perhaps it’s time to rethink the French menu for something with provenance, after all Hampshire is a rich county. Back in the heyday of Tylney Hall 20-30 years ago, I appreciate that English food and wine wasn’t as well known or at the level it is at today but it would perhaps be more imaginative, creative and attract more guests if the menu was adapted to be the ‘best of British’ - including all of the wonderful food that Hampshire and neighbouring counties can offer (including the wine!). Back in the 1990s this sort of traditional French menu felt exciting but by today’s culinary standards it is bland and mediocre. On this visit we also found out that the old snooker table is gone. It broke and it was taken away, never fixed. This is incredibly sad as it was a family tradition to have a game of snooker after dinner in a room which was full of history.
