We had a lovely lunch here. Food was delicious and service was 10/10. The staff are absolutely brilliant and really go out of their way to provide a great experience. My daughter who is usually quite fussy got through all of her lunch, they had some great kids food options! Would highly recommend

We went to dinner for a family catchup on Wednesday evening, my family are locals and been frequenting here for years and years, but I dont often get to visit. What a lovely experience. From being greeted at the bar. The girls in the restaurant are well turned out and professional. And the food…. Well its no surprise this place is busy midweek. I had the home made steak and ale pie. Was the best I think ive had for a very long time. My bf had the burger and was equally as nice. In a time where pubs are struggling. Just keep on doing what you’re doing.

Love this little pub on the Basingstoke Canal. It’s affordable, the food is great and it has a beautiful view over the canal (if you sit outside). We often paddle to the pub on our SUPs and moor for drinks or lunch before heading back upstream. Loads of mountain bikers also stop here during their cycles along the canal.

Popular local favourite with regular appearances of the landlord and lady behind the bar. They offer for some proper quality pub food. Has vegetarian and vegan options as well. The pub is dog friendly and sits right on the canal, meaning a summers walk can find a rest stop for a few drinks. There is a basic play area for kids and a kids menu. Food for reserved/in door served dining is prioritised so occasionally on peak hours you might be waiting longer if you just dropped in. Parking is limited so it is advisable to either walk, or come in the same car during peak hours or weekends.

We arrived for lunch on Friday afternoon. Due to a road closure nearby we arrived a little late at 1.58pm. We stood at the bar for a few minutes. The landlord asked if we were there for lunch, if so the kitchen closed at 2pm! We asked if we could have simple sandwiches but were refused. We had a drink and some crisps and left. Such a shame as previously we had a nice meal. To be refused lunch at 2pm on a Friday is unacceptable and we will not be returning.

We had visited the pub a few weeks ago and enjoyed a lunch and pint of courage best beer. We decided to return for a Friday lunch. Unfortunately there was a road closure nearby so it took us some time to find an alternative route and we arrived at 1.59pm. We were kept waiting for a few minutes at the bar. So when we asked for menus it was 2.01pm. We were told the kitchen was closed. We asked if they could just prepare a simple sandwich but we were refused. We had a drink and the beer was not as good. We will not be returning.

This establishment is always rated highly by locals - check out Fleet People on FB as an example So what better time to finally try it out, than on a Sunday We hadn’t booked, but because we dropped by during the hours between lunch and dinner, they were good enough to find us a table As expected, it was just, but not over crowded Decor is nothing special, standard pub affair, but does have a great beer garden over looking the Basingstoke Canal, at the rear Service was fantastic throughout The adults had something from the Roast menu and our lad selected something from the kids menu He enjoyed his meal, with his only gripe being it was quite small for him, portion wise The portions of the roasts were more than sufficient and was tasty….with the exception of the giant Yorkshire puds Cant explain why, but mine tasted like it was off and my wife’s tasted of washing up liquid Overall, we would still come back 👍🏼

Great little local pub... Staff are so exceptionally friendly, and food was great, with large portions. Prices do look a little steep but the portion sizes do dictate the price. You won't leave disappointed or hungry..great little play area for the younger children - fenced in . Outside has a huge gazebo, so in summer cool and winter keeps you dry. Dogs are welcome in the garden so can get a little noisy, but makes for a great atmosphere with a little bit of barking, good food, plenty of drinks...

This place was recommended to me by a friend a couple of years ago. It has a lovely warm atmosphere and I always receive a friendly welcome each time I have visited. It has a lovely seated area outside in the summer, next to the canal. Great for when you take the family with you. There is a climbing frame and slide for the young ones. They offer table service inside but you can order at the bar if sitting outside. Lunch from 12pm - 2pm but they remain open through the afternoon for drinks. Great if you are sitting out in the sun watching the world pass by on the canal. All the food we have tried has been amazing....Burgers, Pies, Fish and Sandwiches. As a family we regularly visit for a meal. The food and staff are without doubt the best around...however on the evening of our vist there were at least five dogs inside the the pub,two in the restaurant.I like dogs and have been a dog owner but what I dont want to see is a dog sprawled out with it's back end facing me when I am eating, I had to move seats, also a couple behind me had their dog on their lap feeding it from a plate,it was then placed in a chair with it's paws on the table..not withstanding the health & Safety issue I think it is totally disrepectful to other groups eating and to the staff that have to clean up after they have gone! I personally think dogs should not be allowed where people are eating, but I suppose that's down to the owner. At the very minimum, dogs should be left outside away from guests having s meal..This is to dog owners in general..some people believe it or not, don't like dogs. I e-mailed the pub about this but so far no response...kindly keep dogs out of the restaurant. Many thanks

I’ve been coming to Tylney since 2010 for special occasions such as birthdays, Christmas, anniversaries etc. sadly it’s gradually gone down hill and this will possibly be my last visit. I dined at the oak room this week and when the menu was put in front of me i had no idea what to order. The menu was outdated, stuffy and very overpriced. Long gone are the days where you sat in the library, had your amuse-bouch and marvelled at what to order. Your order was taken prior to your arrival at the oak room and your wine was waiting at your table for your arrival. I ended up ordering by eliminating either incredibly boring options like soup and ludicrously expensive ones like £47 Dover sole. I had the whipped goats cheese starter and the pork main. The food tasted nice but it really was nothing special. The menu was just lacking in creativity and provenance. Back in the day you’d walk in the oak room and there was live piano, candles on the table and the silver cloche covered your food and was beautifully removed when the dish was in front of you. All these details made the extra cost worth it. When you pair it all back sadly it’s just not worth it anymore. I know places like Tylney are incredibly expensive to run so some adjustments have to be made but these are the things that made it special and kept us coming back over the years. Places like The Pig have left Tylney behind. Perhaps it’s time to rethink the French menu for something with provenance, after all Hampshire is a rich county. Back in the heyday of Tylney Hall 20-30 years ago, I appreciate that English food and wine wasn’t as well known or at the level it is at today but it would perhaps be more imaginative, creative and attract more guests if the menu was adapted to be the ‘best of British’ - including all of the wonderful food that Hampshire and neighbouring counties can offer (including the wine!). Back in the 1990s this sort of traditional French menu felt exciting but by today’s culinary standards it is bland and mediocre. On this visit we also found out that the old snooker table is gone. It broke and it was taken away, never fixed. This is incredibly sad as it was a family tradition to have a game of snooker after dinner in a room which was full of history.

Beautiful hotel, lovely gardens and very interesting history. However, like other reviewers, I have a few niggly things, but most importantly and unfortunately, the service levels let the side down. We were the only people in the restaurant at dinner, and one of our party of four did not receive his appetiser and upon notification, it still didn’t show up at all. They then forgot his main course and by the time they served it everyone else had finished their two course meal. We spent a lot on dinner and a good bottle of French champagne and a fine bottle of red coming to over £400. We mentioned this to the night manager, when he came into the restaurant, which was now in almost complete darkness as they had forgotten to turn on the lights . We also mentioned it to the manager at breakfast who said they would inform reception, but when we checked out at reception, they had not heard about the problem and did not offer any apology or compensation. In fact when she asked what was the problem we pointed out again that one in our party had not received his meal until after everyone else had finished and her comment was “…well when you got the food it was good, wasn’t it?” A few other points, if such a nice hotel is trying to be a four-star hotel, I would certainly recommend the availability of cappuccino and espresso at breakfast instead of just carafe coffee. Also orange juice was from a packet or a can and certainly not fresh or “not from concentrate” or any of the other quality options available. I would suggest waiting until the Hotel is under new management to try this beautiful property. With today’s competitive world and customers a click away from passing you over, I really don’t expect a management team with this service level to stay viable. Update – and as expected, a month later and not a single response from the Hotel even to my phone calls and emails have emailed the management company and the ownership company. They just don’t care.
