Viceroy of India in York

All good food. The Naga is very spicy. Very good service but the waiter farted in my face and laughed. 😂 Will be saving one for to get him back next time.

Amazing food, amazing staff. We didn’t book and they still managed to squeeze us in at short notice to a packed restaurant. Faultless

Ordered a takeaway tonight , we was told it would be 40 minutes as we was on our way home fro a day out we called in to a local pub for a quick drink to kill some time . We arrived at the restaurant exactly 40 minutes later, there was two in front of me !! Their food was brought straight from the kitchen. I gave my name to the waiter who replied! Hello yes your food is there on the table and then proceeded to the till , I said to the waiter ! How long has the food been on that table ?? He replied 10- 15 minutes . I said to him ?? Is it still hot ?? He replied it should be so I put my hand in the bag ???? It was just ok so I said ok and went to pay for it when another person came and said !! If you don’t want it ?? Dont have it ?? Picked it up and walked away saying you’re not having it . So rude so out of order !!! Have had so many meals from that restaurant over many years , never ever will I go there again to be treated so badly and rudely for no real reason !! Totally disgusting.

Delivery: Can we PLEASE discuss why indian food in the UK has so much sugar in it? What on earth is going on! I have just had a delivery from this restaurant and the peshwari naan bread tased like it had been made with jam. Why? Why not black pepper - or ginger - or garlic - or, heaven forfend, some bloody SALT. This ruined the whole meal which wasn't that great to begin with. Stop it ! Stop it ! No-one wants a naan that could rivel a coca cola in terms of sugar! Nowhere in indiua could you naan for dessert so why do it here?

As always the food was very tasty. However, for the third consecutive visit no sooner had we finished our last mouthful when the plates and cutlery were whisked away quickly followed by the arrival of the hand wipes and bill. It was clearly obvious they wanted us out. If you want to eat in a relaxed environment and enjoy the occasion I suggest you look elsewhere.

Thoroughly enjoyed our meal here at Viceroy. First time visitors to this restaurant and I can highly recommend the tandoori mixed grill, so juicy. We over ordered on rice, one is ample between two especially if ordering side of chips. But we were starving and I think our eyes bigger than our bellies!! Reasonably priced too. I've knocked just one star off because if seated at the small tables meant for two, it feels a bit cramped. But would definately return.

Fantastic food, full of flavour and impeccable service. I am always on the look out for different dishes this had a good selection so tried something new. What's more when we left people were queueing for tables.

The Viceroy in York last night - amazing service - they reduced the oil content of our dishes and made us a kachumber salad each on request! They were so on it with taking our orders, bringing fresh napkins the moment we neeeded them, bringing the food out promptly and even gave us a small discount as Trevor had visited the night prior with friends! First pic is my dish - Punjabi Neembu chicken which I’m going to make at home after my lemon pickle is made and matured to go in it! Second dish is Trevor’s murghi masala!! Busy restaurant so possibly best to book. We shall be back 😋

Yorks best and most traditional Indian restaurant and great for takeaways too. Always lots of staff to look after you which is rears these days. Food and drink is always exceptional and very friendly staff

Got take away 3.11.23. Chips cold and soggy Bombay Pots cold felt like food had been standing for a long time before Just Eat collected it. Shame on you Viceroy poor service.

This was about the 5th time I had personally visited this restaurant and I enjoyed the meals provided on previous occasions. On the last occasion however my wife did not feel well afterwards and we put that down to the fact she was sitting near to a fridge which gave her an airy blast each time it was opened and possibly caught a chill on her stomach. Last Friday we were sat somewhere warmer. We both had the same lamb dish and although we considered it ok we did,nt feel the lamb was as good as it was on previous occasions. We paid for the meal and left the restaurant, within 10 minutes or so of leaving I suffered bad stomach pains and needed to get to the toilet urgently. I managed to get to the public toilets inside Morrisons supermarket which fortunately is quite nearby and just avoided having an accident and then had an EXPLOSION. ( I wont go into further detail). When I got home I was then ok for the rest of the evening but then my wife had a similar experience which persisted for at least a couple of hours. In addition to this some friends of ours ordered a takeaway from this establishment the same evening and the 4 of them had awful indigestion and numerous visits to the toilet. I was surprised at all this because I have previously considered this establishment to be very good, however there was obviously a serious problem that evening and I eat at Indian restaurants regularly and can say that I had never had an experience like this before possibly because I have a strong stomach. We will not be going there again !

The best Indian in York and further afield, amazing service and the food is spot on. Starters and mains are pretty much the best I’ve ever tasted

A terrible meal. A very unfriendly welcome by the gent at the door. The table we are given was in a tight corner and not comfortable. After taking a drinks order poppadoms and pickle arrived, pickles tasted stale. When our made courses arrived the gent threw the nan so hard on the table it came off the plate. He processed to dump everything else down, far too busy looking at another table where he knew someone and wanted to talk to them. No one came over to see how the meal was or if we needed another drink. The chicken bhuna was so sweet. Just tomato puree no spice. The chicken madras had no spice and was very greasy. The nan was cold and no taste of garlic. The chippati was awful. Cold and hard, felt and tasted like cardboard. We sat for 15mins waiting for someone to come over. In the end we just got up and went to the desk to pay. After saying the meal was awful we were told we should come another day when the main chef is cooking!!!! Unbelievable. We paid the bill. Never to return again.

We were staying at a hotel around 5 minutes walk away, so we decided to book this having read good things. It was a Friday night, and it seemed busy with lots of staff on hand to help. We ordered drinks almost immediately after sitting down, and they came quickly. After ordering our starters, etc, were brought swiftly too. The dips to accompany the poppadoms were a generous size to share for 2 people. Compared to other restaurants we've tried in different places, this one didn't rate as high, hence the average 3 stars. If we ever visit the area again, I think we'd try elsewhere.

What a fantastic evening we had celebrating our sons 21st birthday. Not only was the food outstanding, the staff were soo friendly, especially Mintu. He made our evening soo special, he is a credit to you. Will definitely be back

My husband and I really enjoy coming to the viceroy’s and have been coming for many years and they always greet us with a smile and determination to help us with our order and present us with a good service.

Great Indian Restaurant just outside the city walls, at Monkgate. Food and service was excellent. We were lucky to get a table because the place was pretty full, and, judging by the welcomes and chat from staff, all the tables around us seemed to be occupied by local returning customers.

There are so many Indian restaurants in the UK, but here is one that's well above the average. It is spacious, airy, comfortable (nice chairs!) and not at all noisy. The menu has many unconventional items that are fun to try. The tray of chutnys was bigger and better than average. And the cooking itself was uniformly fine. The service, although perhaps not what you would call jovial, was nonetheless polite and efficient. All in all I would call this one of the best Indian restaurant experiences I ever had. Highly recommended!

The best curry seller in York. The tastiest of meat dishes is incomparable in this city, especially with the closure of Akhbars. Tasty veggie dishes too including tarka Dahl and saag paneer. Annoying that the pickle tray doesn’t come as standard when ordering poppadoms but nobody’s perfect. Only seconds walk from the city walls (closest to Minster). Enjoy!

Had a lovely meal for two of us. Was a little noisy with a party of around 20 arriving halfway through. However, staff were great, and the food was great.

We had a very nice takeaway from here a couple of years ago & on our return visit decided to eat in,we arrived just on opening but didn’t find the staff particularly welcoming,we had our drinks & ordered our meal which seemed to arrive very quickly & was brought out by it appeared one of the kitchen staff,the food wasn’t very warm & there was not a heated tray it was just dumped on the table,the food soon got cold so we asked one of the staff if it could be warmed up which they begrudgingly took away & did they not have food warmers now?,the reply was a grumpy no! The meals were not the best we’ve ever had & a bit bland Chicken Dhansak & Chicken Rogan Josh with a Pilau rice. It seems to be the trend now not to use tablecloths so seemed more like a cafe in what is quite a nice restaurant & another trend that people don’t mind eating warm to cold food. I am a repeat customer. Three meals ordered all had to be reheated.my chicken tikka was revolting in taste and it was like trying to chew rubber needless to it went in the bin.I ordered two chapatti,they never arrived. Very poor for £49.10

Probé muchos restaurantes indios en York a lo largo de los años, pero nunca encontré uno excelente. Un cliente mío vive en York y dijo: "The Viceroy es el mejor de York, así que prueba ese lugar". Lo visité el sábado por la noche y fue excelente. Comí pollo Nawabi Khana. Suena extraño, pero esta salsa sabía como un buen Beef Madras, aunque en realidad era pollo y estaba muy bueno. El pollo era excelente en las comidas de todos y eso es lo principal que busco en un restaurante indio. Si no tiene un pollo excelente, nunca lo visitaremos dos veces. Mi hijo tenía pollo Balt con ajo y chile y era absolutamente encantador, así que lo tendré la próxima vez. El personal fue el más profesional que he visto en York y esta fue la primera vez que me tomaron la temperatura en un restaurante. Todos llevaban viseras faciales y limpiaban excepcionalmente cada vez que se desocupaba una mesa.

No es la mejor experiencia. No he tenido una comida para llevar india en años, fui por la que no tenía los descuentos asumiendo que sería la mejor (mal). Llegamos con arroz que faltaba en nuestro pedido (aunque estaba marcado en el recibo), llamaron y nos preguntaron si lo queríamos en nuestro próximo pedido (no, no comer curry sin arroz). Se disculparon (bastante bien, se cometió un error), dijeron que lo traerán y agregarán un lado de la casa a modo de disculpa. No obtuve el arroz durante otros 40 minutos aproximadamente, ya que lo llevaron a la dirección incorrecta a pesar de que les dieron el código postal cuando llamamos y les indicamos el artículo que faltaba. Todo perdonado, hasta que desempaque el arroz y no incluyeron el lado extra como prometí, ya que el arroz fue todo lo que obtuvimos. La comida era buena, pero obviamente no era fresca y recalentada se sintió como una pérdida de dinero y no compraré de aquí nuevamente. Servicio al cliente horrible.

After we arrived late in York we ventured for a table... although they had finished serving and all the other customers had left that happily accommodated us and wow. What a meal. So tasty and e real treat. We highly recommend visiting. What a pleasure

Este es uno de nuestros restaurantes favoritos, así que fue maravilloso poder volver por primera vez desde marzo. Fue muy reconfortante encontrar muchas medidas de seguridad de Covid implementadas, por lo que se sintió muy seguro e higiénico. La comida era tan deliciosa y abundante como siempre y el personal era tan encantador y acogedor. Una velada muy agradable en nuestro viaje de regreso a la normalidad.

During lock down this is the only takeaway we have eaten and was amazing. We would normally go to the restaurant on our anniversary/special occasions.I had the garlic chilli chicken and can't wait to have it again! The staff could not have been more accommodating and friendly, I called earlier than they were open only for information but was able to get my food ordered then arranged delivery for a small extra price that I was more than happy to pay as I couldn't order through justeat as I was out of the catchment area but over the phone they were happy to organise a driver to deliver and give me updates there and then.We will be going back shortly I'm sure. To say we are currently in lockdown, the quality has definitely not been compromised in the challenging times.

I got a takeaway from these after reading positive reviews. What I got was not a proper Indian. It's just thrown together no care, no flavour, no depth and tastes like chemicals.I can't eat this I threw most of it away. When I get a properly done curry I eat it all always.Just because it's a takeaway and you maybe struggling or just trying to cut costs and time to make something. All that will happen is more bad reviews. It annoys me to be charged so much for rubbish.I will stick to fish and chips. You can't really cook them in a different way.

Great stuff! York has plenty of Indian restaurants, but I found 5 sub standard ones before I made it to the Viceroy. Bought a takeaway, loved it. Don’t mess around kissing the frogs like I had to....just go straight to the Prince. And I’m not talking Harry.

Have eaten in here regularly but hadn't used the takeaway for a while - happy to report that the food is still just as good as when eating in the restaurant (not always the case!). Definitely recommended if in York.

Anoche, con poca antelación, me encontré con un amigo de West Yorkshire y decidí que saldríamos a cenar a la India.Telefoneé a Virrey y pude conseguir una mesa acogedora para dos a las 7. 00 pm.He conducido este restaurante muchas veces a lo largo de los años y noté que recientemente había sido renovado y se veía maravilloso desde el exterior.Al entrar en el edificio había una zona de descanso, pero nos llevaron directamente a nuestra mesa y nos dieron la opción de cenar.El servicio fue excelente, los camareros eran muy atentos y nada era demasiado molesto.Teníamos pollo Alfrezzia? Arroz frito con huevo y naan más poppadoms y bandeja de encurtidos. El tamaño de las porciones era suficiente para que cualquier persona con hambre lo disfrutara, teníamos poco apetito pero estábamos llenos.También fue maravilloso presenciar cómo el propietario / gerente se tomaba un tiempo para hablar con otros clientes y preguntar si su comida y servicio cumplían con sus expectativas.Ambos pasamos una noche maravillosa y definitivamente volveremos a visitar Viceroy.Gracias por el recuerdo y la fantástica hospitalidad.

A simply excellent curry restaurant with fantastic food and service. Every dish we had rivaled the best we'd every eaten and the Keema Naans were amazing. Just perfect.As a well traveled visitor of curry houses in the country, i'm yet to find one that betters The Viceroy and make sure we visit every time we're in the area.

Absolutely fab! Best curry outside Bradford. We went on Friday evening at 9pm. The place was heaving, but we were seated within 15 minutes. Staff polite and very efficient. Will certainly go back!

We have been visiting the Viceroy for over 30 years and have found it to be consistently great food and good service. Always busy at peak times so it's best to book for Fri/Sat nights.
