Woodthorpe Spice in York

Surprising and happy find. Looking for a curry near our bnb we cane across Woodthorpe Spice. We had the Prawn Patia and Samosas for a starter - both excellent, the prawns in particular - followed by Nawabi Lamb and Tangail Lamb. These mains were really well spiced, very tasty and highly recommended. If we lived nearby, I would work through the entire menu - everything looks good and are all so well described.

Not being in the City, you benefit from the lower pricing and a menu to suit all tastes & the ability to cater for all allergies. A full bar is also available covering both alcohol & soft drink options You will not be disappointed!!!

Had a very nice meal with friends and family sitting inside. It was very busy as they took plenty of takeaway orders. Our food took a while to arrive but it was Xmas Eve and it was worth the wait. Will go again.

Me and my girlfriend went here for a sit down Indian, it was very nice, we started off with Samosas meat and veg, I had Chicken tikka masal with boiled rice, my girlfriend had chicken possanda with vegetable rice and shared a garlic nam bread, it was lovely, especially with the cobra beer, and glass of wine 👍

Great food, reasonably priced. Staff are friendly. The location in a housing estate is unusual, but was able to park a short walk from the restaurant.

Had a lovely very tasty take away to have whilst watching England lose to france in the World Cup. About 6 week ago me my wife and a couple of friends went for a sit down curry at Woodthorpe spice and all of us were very underwhelmed with what we were served. All the meals were very bland and tasteless, so we were very disappointed, but not one for being put off, we tried again but this time a take away. Well let me say all the meals were delicious, very flavoursome and full of clear spice flavours, just what you want when having a ruby murry. I had a Tamily chicken Amy wife had the Shahi Shaslic Bhuna both highly recommended.

Great place for an authentic curry

We live in the local area but had not tried woodthorpe spice, prefering to go to town for eating out. After seeing how busy it was and reading some reviews we decided to give it a go. I don't enjoy writing poor reviews but it was terrible. The service was absolutely non existent, the poor guy was trying but was just rushed off his feet. The food was awful. Onion baji was dry and lacked any flavour. Tikka massage was just creamy but had no flavour. Nann breads were good though. Such a shame and a waste of money.

Always a really nice meal and really nice staff, lovely naan breads too, cosy because it's small. I eat here quite often and it's very reasonably priced. My only tiny little criticism is that they have clearly changed the mint yoghurt that comes with the popadoms, it used to be pale green and tasted lovely, now it is white and tasteless.

I have been searching for a good Indian restaurant/take away since moving to York in 2019 and to no avail! Until last night when I tried Woodthorpe Spice. Food was excellent and very reasonably priced. Staff very friendly. Will definitely be using this restaurant from now on. Finally happy I've found a brilliant Indian take away and restaurant.

So I've lived in York since 2019 and finding a good Indian has been near on impossible until last night! Woodthorpe Spice, brilliant authentic Indian cuisine and also more than reasonably priced. My definite go to take away or sit down restaurant from now on.

Consistently fantastic every week whatever we order. They have worked hard throughout lockdown and kept us fed and safe for many years before it too.

This place is outstanding, whether you eat in or take out. The staff cannot do enough for you and the food cannot be beaten. I used to go to Bradford an awful lot but this place makes travelling unnecessary. Whatever you order you get the flavours and textures you are looking for. How stupid it is to numb your taste buds with curry powder. You can enjoy every ingredient at its best and the only trouble is ... you will want to go back again and again... Well done to ALL the staff who give value-for-money along with a truly wonderful experience.

we travelled to york on sunday, food wanted by all I went looking for supper and stumbled upon Woodthorpe spice. I asked a few people for their opinion about the restaurant and they said it was fine. I ordered the food veggie for the wife and kids and chicken tikka for myself, I drove back to the campsite with eager anticipation and were we disappointed it was the worst curry I've ever had no taste colour was nothing like a chicken tikka and no favour if you are ever on your travels avoid like the plague

We've had lots of takeaways from Woodthorpe Spice and it's ended up being our fave. The food is plentiful and amazing (and we're fussy). These days the creamy dishes always seem to have so much sugar added, but their dishes are sweetish without being overpowering. They are easy to order from when you ring and the delivery person is so pleasant. We will be ordering from them for a long time to come. (My daughter and her friends have also eaten in and they were the ones who recommended Woodthorpe Spice to us.)

Great takeaway , first one since lockdown

Could I say from the outset, we are experienced and regular eaters of Indian food, and this review is not written lightly. It is meant to be constructive, and hopefully the owners will take note and learn from the comments. We used the takeaway on Saturday July 25. It was early evening and we had arranged for a collection at 6.30. Although it was not busy our food was not ready until 6.50 - not a good start. When it was unpacked at home the starters were completely dried out giving the impression they had been kept in a warming oven for several hours, possibly even having been cooked the previous day? The popadoms were stale - perhaps a day or two old. The main course 'Chicken Karai' could have been anything from the menu. It was a complete mish mash of everything and anything thrown into a dish. We struggled to find anything good to say about it. The mushroom pilau was again distinctly aged, and the chapaty was so swimming in oil we gave up trying to eat it. The only saving grace about the whole experience was that our daughter found her Tandoori fish more or less acceptable. I could not recommend the takeaways based on my personal experience but I am given to understand that eating in the restaurant is a whole different experience.

Had the most disappointing meal, ordered 2 chicken dishes, one which should've been cooked with a cream, there was no mention of mincemeat on the menu description, however, my meal contained more mincemeat than chicken and my husbands had not one chilli or any spice to it whatsoever as the description on the menu. Bloody awful, bland and with no flavours, wish I'd saved my £30. Won't be using again that's for sure! Shame as it's local!

Our first review for the place but we have probably had a meal every week for the last five years! The staff are friendly, the prices are reasonable and the food is excellent without exception, wether you eat in or take away. Well worth a try, you won't be disapointed!

Haven't been here for ages having moved to the other side of York. Still a great place to eat. Extensive menu of specials plus the usual favourites. From the lamb Palak to the tandoori salmon everything cooked well. The special rice is highly recommended. Don't expect super fast service as everything is cooked fresh and the kitchen is very small. Only seats about 24 so booking is recommended

Dreadful. Very slow service. Left before we received our meal as we were worried we might die of starvation.

I am blessed that this Indian Restaurant is literally around the corner from where I live. Friendly & helpful staff are on hand to advise you through the wide range of meals available, including their wonderful selection of Specials. Indian beers on draught are available, along with a small selection of wines to cover most budgets. Not being situated close to the City, this is reflected in the prices and you will find your credit card not too hammered. Takeaway is also available, but with it being so close for me, we always enjoy the restaurant. Closed on Mondays, it’s best to book at weekends & for large parties.

I've lived locally to it for years and always commented how nice it smells but until yesterday had never actually been. We were made to feel welcome from the minute we set foot through the door. The staff couldn't do enough to help us and were friendly and polite throughout. At the end of the meal we even had a nice chat with one of the waiters, who then went out of his way to get some takeaway menus for us and check their opening times etc. The food was very tasty and very reasonably priced. After the usual poppadoms and pickles, we shared a sizzling mixed platter. Quite honestly the best I've had. This was followed by garlic rice, chicken chaat for the boyf and hawaiian chicken curry for me. All was flavoursome and my chicken dish was beautifully rich. We've already said that we'll go again asap and are very much looking forward to it. Really really recomment this little place 😊

The only place in york I'll go for Indian food. Great service and even better food. The best place outside of Bradford for a curry. Never fails

Whilst living only five minutes wals away from this restaurant, up until now we have ignored it. On the spur of the moment we decided to try it out. A very good decision. This is a small restaurant and whilst not being luxurious, it does have an intimate ambience. Currently my wife is wheelchair bound after an accident. This did not present a problem. The very helpful staff immediately cleared space for her at a very convenient table.The menu was expansive and would cater for anyone who enjoys Indian food (one tiny criticism, the print is very small). Service was excellent and reasonably quick, considering each dish is cooked to order. The food was of excellent quality and very tasty indeed and the most expensive item was well under £10.00. I would thoroughly recommend this little gem.

He intentado mucho pero no todos en York y no necesitaré, ya que este lugar es magnífico ya la vuelta de la esquina de mi casa también.He tenido literalmente todo en el menú. Cada plato es excelente en sí mismo. El personal es un gran grupo de chicos. Sigan con el buen trabajo chicos.

Tuve un take away bastante tarde. Estuvo bien. Carece de pollo pero dado el precio no debería esperar más. Era demasiado dulce tener más piña que pollo. Me doy cuenta de que la piña en dhansak parece haberse vuelto popular, pero no es mi gusto y no es algo que haya experimentado en mis muchos viajes a la India, y no me gustan las comidas agridulces.Dado que comí todo y tenía una agradable pizca de fondo. V bueno, Nan.

Went there on recommendation, very glad we did. A good range of vegetarian dishes that didn’t at all disappoint, tasty Nan, all at very reasonable prices. Nice friendly atmosphere, great service. One of the better local Indian restaurants. We’ll make this a regular thing.

Aparecí para comer en la cena, ya que era tranquilo y no había planeado nada para el té.

Fui con un par de amigos que no son visitantes frecuentes. Perfectamente agradable y amigable casa de curry local. El menú era muy variado y me encantaron algunas de las descripciones de platos "interesantes" con consejos sobre qué dolencia particular trata este curry. El comienzo chisporroteante para dos fue perfecto. Lamb kofta fue especialmente bueno. Mi otra mitad tenía la sorpresa de Bengala, que era cremosa y afrutada, pero un poco sosa. Tuve el pollo Kohlpuri. Fue descrito como "fabulosamente rico y caliente". Sin duda fue fragante y aromático, pero necesitaba un poco más de una patada. Muy sabrosa sin embargo. En cuanto al precio, popadums para cuatro, entrantes compartidos, cuatro platos principales, dos panes y dos arroces más al menos 3 cervezas cada uno era de unos 80 libras por valor tan excelente. Definitivamente regresaremos.

Whether dining in the restaurant or using the take away service the food is absolutely top notch. Always a warm welcome and if required a walk through the multiple menu choices from the standard curry to chefs specials. I usually go for the hotter choices which never disappoint, another favourite is the tikka masala which has the sauce separate - great idea and allows you to add as much or as little as you wish to the sizzling chicken tikka.

I live about ten minutes walk from here and pass by most days, not sure why it's taken me this long to try it out.

Was recommended by two people. We both ordered a hot curry but both were extremely mild, so much so both curries were more or less tasteless.

Fui a este restaurante en una base regular y nunca me ha decepcionado. El pollo kuni es el mejor curry balti que he tenido en Nueva York. Personal agradable y amable que siempre te hacen sentir bienvenido.

what a waist of time never again,ordered a takeaway at 6 12 pm still no sign at 7 20pm,phoned and they said it had just set off ok.still no sign at7 40 phoned again told 5 mins.10 minutes later had enough so cancelled it.It turned up at 8pm told him I had cancelled he replied do not order again . fat chance of that never again !!!!

Order weekly from this takeaway/ restaurant and love it every time. So many dishes to choose from, all the ones we have tried ranging from mild to hot have been great. The staff are really pleasant, always go the extra mile to make their customers happy.

Had a number of meals from Woodthorpe Spice and every time they have been very tasty and good value. This was still the case the last time we went! We have always collected and never eaten in.The staff are always friendly and helpful. Great choice on the menu.

Called in on a warm Saturday evening around 9pm. Although we live local we have never had the chance to pay Woodthorpe Spice a visit.... well wish we hadn't bothered. When we walked in the waiter stood at the bar looked at his watch as if we were taking up his time gestured us to a table (plenty of tables to choose from as only one other table occupied). He didn't hand us a menu but threw them down on the table. He asked what we would like to drink. I just managed to say "a glass of water please " before he had walked off without waiting to see what my husband would like. At this point I felt really uncomfortable with the atmosphere and knew I couldn't eat in such a cold and unwelcoming place so we upped and left! That is no way to treat your customers and I am surprised any customer would return. I certainly won't be....

Ordered a takeaway whilst in the shop, told them would wait, no suggestion how long it would take.45 mins later it was ready, no apology for the wait, they were not busy. Ordered 2 mild & 1 med curries, no sign of spice in any of them. Lots of staff, not much going on, I will not go back.

To start i wish i could give a zero rating! Ordered a takeaway. When delivered arrived luke warm. Onions bhajis cold and chewy and obviously old. Missing parts of order. When called to rectify the missing parts i was told "nothing we can do" "driver has gone on a very long delivery" asked when they could deliver missing food "we dont know" My husband took the food back and got a refund, restaurant empty on a saturday night speaks volumes. Used to be good. Gone down hill will NEVER go again

We visited on a Saturday night. The restaurant is in a small shopping area around a housing estate so maybe not too many people know about it. It's a pity really as the food is really nice, it is licensed and the service is very good. There were only two people in apart from us so it did lack atmosphere. We enjoyed starts of sheek kebabs. Our main courses were very tasty I had a chicken rogan josh with lots of fresh tomatoes and nice herbs my husband had chicken Karahi was really tasty. The nan bread was a bit sweet but overall we really enjoyed our meal and the vegetable pilau was really fresh and tasty.
