Mumbai Lounge in York

Ate here tonight . The food was amazing as always. Been here twice before. Disappointed they sat us right next to the door where it was draughty and cold. Yep my fault for not asking to move , but the restaurant at the back was empty . I appreciate restaurants do this so people passing see it's busy, but it ruined my meal and experience

Fab meal there, staff lovely & friendly, happy to recommend. Bottle of beer was very reasonable.. huge bottle!

We called in by chance and it’s obviously popular as we only just managed to get a table on a Tuesday! It’s a very attractive place with a great vibe, the menu is interesting and a big breakaway from the norm. Our meals were generous and tasty, very impressed and charming staff, and excellent value.

A busy, bustling restaurant with wonderful Indian food. The service was also excellent. It can be quite noisy but that does add to the atmosphere as well!

Have been visiting Mumbai Lounge since 2010 and it gets better and better all the time. Our business dinner this week was a delight, with the owner Rakib personally selecting a range of dishes to suit our tastes. A VIP service comes naturally to him and you can see all the staff are highly trained and are at your service. This is not your average Indian. The menu evolves all the time and you can see the chefs (a lot of them) hard at work in an open kitchen. We have dined in the main restaurant before and also on the top deck as well as the private dining room on lower ground. Each floor has a bar and offers a unique place to be. Perfect for any occasion. Perfect food. Perfect service. We will be back soon. Thanks Mr Rakib.

I took a few friends over to this place. The Naan was good including Pappad and chutneys that we ordered in the beginning with lamb tikka and kebap. However the curry items were super oily which makes the food sticky and our stomaches ache ! Not highly recommended

On March of 2024 we visited Mumbai restaurant. Our meal was very tasty. We enjoy service. We booked a dish with lamb and coffee.

Decided to book for my wife’s birthday on Saturday night 23rd of March Arrived made very welcome great atmosphere We ordered our main meal and it was absolutely lovely, one of the best curries we have both had , cannot fault the quality We will definitely be returning,

Nice place to eat out,kebab starters were under done and disappointing Other dishes were nice, good sized portions and the special Curry's were excellent Service was good

Arrived and asked if we wanted papadums, we said yes and within a minute 8 arrived with 2 lots of side dips. We never asked for this amount, thought nothing of it until bill appeared .... £15 just added. Sheet kebabs were extremely bland and the chicken tikka starter tasted like it was boiled with no taste. Request extra salad/lettace with no tomatoes or cucumber and man (manager?) gave me a hard stare and the impression that this was an inconvenience. This meal was really expensive for the quality we received. The only good thing about the Mumbai was the lovely waitresses.

Food very bland and tasteless, staff are in your face all the time even tried to take our plates away before we had finished our pompodoms wouldn't go again or recommend

Very disappointing visit, firstly waitress was at us straight away without giving us time to settle down, we ordered onion barji and lamb sheek starters that were extremely bland and tasteless the barji appeared to be more like potato fritters than crispy onion. I had lamb pasanda main which was more like a korma but again tasteless and didn't look at all appetising, my wife ordered the chicken balti again tasteless and bland, keema nan was also greasy and lacking in mincemeat filling, one to forget I'm afraid and at £62 including 2 drinks definitely not good value for money

Absolutely dog food! Nothing authentic! Selling the lie of indian food to Brits and europeans that know no better! This isn't indian food! Drink a lot of beer and fill your beer craving with this rubbish! Left my meal.

The food, as always, was first rate. The atmosphere in there is casual without being bawdy, and the staff are attentive without being overwhelming. Thus is why it's always my first choice for an Indian restaurant in york.

Genuinely never had such delicious Indian food, freshly prepared and better quality ingredients than ever experienced before. Cannot recommend too highly. (I was only visiting York briefly and just wish they had a sister branch nearer my home on the south coast!)

I had a three course meal starter, main, desert it was £35 couple of hours later I threw up. I haven’t felt so ill 90% sure it’s food poisoning 😍

The worst curry I've EVER part eaten in my life ! Sauce was like Heinz tomato soup with sugar and cream thrown in ; special fried rice ? Absolutely appalling NOTHING SPECIAL AT ALL fried white rice with chick peas WOW I think NOT , Given it one star as that's as low as you can give ! Would have been zero if the option had been available : HIGHLY NOT recommend !

Terrific authentic Indian restaurant. Excellent lunch menu and not overpriced. Under £40 for pickles and pops, Chicken Tikka/Veg Pakora starter, Balti Chicken/Buttered Chicken - rice and nan for main and wine, tea and coffee. Would recommend.

Good but pricey Indian restaurant in the heart of York. I had spicy crusted Monkfish which was excellent. They are a bit stingy with the Pickle Tray

Hands down the best Indian in York. Eat here or get a takeaway at least 3 times a week, everything always perfect.

Just okay. Nann & veg rice excellent, curry and starter tasteless really (chichen Balti and mixed starter). Overcooked prawn which was disappointing, wouldn't rush back

This place had been recommended to us for a weekend stay in York by a few people but we were disappointed and won't go back. The main problem was that the noise was overwhelming and really annoying. There were quite a few large groups already seated who clearly had had lots to drink and were being really loud, coupled with other groups coming in the door and waiting, very loudly, before being seated. Service was ok, a bit slow but the staff were pleasant enough. Food was generally ok but one of us had a passanda - the sauce was tasteless (few spices and tasted like warm milk) and chicken very disappointing.

Stick to the Viceroy ....Behold an £18 curry! 3 prawns! Rude staff "I've brought you another prawn to keep you happy". Hard, rank prawns. Refused to accept 1/2 money for one dish. No offer to reduce bill. Ended up walking out after offering to pay full bill minus £9. Shocking, disgusting. Won't be going back. Viceroy always from now on.

Super hot curry, great sauce flavours and good overall. Lamb curry good, starter prawn puri and lamb chops good. Chicken a bit dry. When. Pre-cooking just cook through. Nice atmosphere and soft comfy chairs. Nan bread light and fluffy

First time I have put 5 stars to absolutely everything. The food here is drop dead GORGEOUS! The portion sizes are brilliant The way they give you the pans and the hot plate is very nice. People have actually requested for their normally spicy curries such as (Madras and Vindaloo) to now be overly spicy and they will gladly listen and cater to the customers needs which brings me to the service.The service is the best I have ever received in an establishment like this. It's cozy and comfortable the staff are so friendly they even open the door for you on exit the food.is that good this deserves a Michelin star. Are you looking for a good Indian restaurant in York City Centre? Look no further GO HERE! It's also open Lunch time on weekends which is a massive bonus they also don't just do warm ups for lunch times either it's all made fresh. Been twice now great both times and WILL be back!

I live in Hull so this is the first time I have tried this restaurant, and without exaggerating, it’s the best Indian food I’ve ever had and the best table service I’ve ever had as well. Brilliant service from the staff and a big menu to choose from. Would 100% recommend giving it a try.

The food here is of excellent quality and the service is excellent. Akash and singh are absolutely brilliant with the service here and always willing to go the extra mile for customers.

Yet another disappointing visit . I used to give this place 5 stars Last time I thought it was probably my fault for choice of dish , which was a bit dry , but chicken was not quite as succulent as it maybe should have been. Went back and again left very dissapointed . Tough overcooked chicken . Will now probably knock this place on its head and try pastures new. Shame as ot used to be a go to.

Amazing food & service in this very popular and busy restaurant - wish we lived nearer.

Was out for our Christmas do and chose those place for food. There was a bit of a wait but the curry I had was one of the greatest I've had in a very long time. I had the Shalamar Kharni which was stupidly tasty. Not the cheapest place in York but hey you pay for good food

Appeared to be about 3/4 full when we arrived. 6.15pm. Soon had customers being shown to tables on other floor. Service well organised, food and drink orders taken by different staff but no delays. Atmosphere great and our food choices worked out well for us both. Restaurant remained busy and lively. A really good evening.

Service was very attentive and the chicken tikka masala was SO good.

Food seemed okay, albeit overpriced until shortly after our meal my partner and I spent the next 14 hours being violently, nightmarishly, ill. Vile unhygienic swill, avoid at all costs.

Everything was fine until we got back to our hotel. Currently sitting on the floor in the bathroom, in front of the toilet, having brought up everything I've eaten today. My partner is not far behind, but he's having to use a bag. It's either horrific food poisoning, or something worse. We had lamb. Definitely would not recommend the place to anyone.

Great place to visit if you are a fan of a very rich menu - the variety of dishes was really good. A little disappointed by the fact that even though we ordered medium spiced curries, they were very mild. Otherwise delicious dishes, very meat intense (maybe too much as we could barely finish them). The service was quick, perhaps too quick :) and the only thing that let them down is pouring the beers upfront (from bottles) with limited skill, before bringing them to the table, which left them rather flat.

We were traveling from Edinburgh and this was my first time trying an Indian meal and I can honestly say it was the most delicious food I have ever had, just perfect. Very good service, highly recommended. Now that we are back in Edinburgh, we still miss the food here.

Considering they managed to get six of us in with no booking in possibly the busiest night before Christmas time was brilliant! The service was great and the food was brilliant!

I ate at Mumbai last night and I have to say it was one of the worst experiences I have had in a really long time. We had booked a table at 7pm but arrived 10 minutes which was fine, we were seated at a drafty table by the stairs. The waiter came over every 5 minutes asking if we were ready to order and each time we said no he looked at us like we had ruined his whole life. You know the look, like we were incompetent fools who didn’t know the rules. I asked for my king prawn garlic chilli to be saucy as I like my curry’s to have a lot of sauce, the waiter said that was fine and he’d tell the chef. I was so disappointed when it came, it had about 2 table spoons of sauce over 3 very rubbery prawns. Unfortunately no one came to ask if our meals were ok until about half an hour later by which time it was cold and irredeemable. I left 2 of the prawns because they were inedible, the dish was £18 - expensive prawn I had! Despite the lies written below - I did not polish everything off. I left 2 prawns and also 2/3rds of my naan - which happened to be the nicest part of the meal. But I felt sick after eating the toughest prawn in the history of all tough prawns. I don’t doubt it was good quality but after the chef was done with it, it was like chewing Barbies leg. Perhaps they both bounced off my plate and your waiting staff presumed I ate them. The whole night the staff treated us like we were an annoyance, to be got in and out as quickly as possible. There was no niceties or calmness. The whole thing was unpleasant from start to finish. The bill came to over £80 for 4 drinks, 2 mains, 3 sundries and popadoms. The service and food were awful and I will never go there again. There are too many good places. McDonald’s would have been better. I have been there about 5 times in the past and it was totally different, I don’t know if there’s new management or what but it was just dreadful. The feedback from the owner tells you everything you need to know, they don’t care if I/you enjoy your food or even if you’ll come back, they want you in and out as quickly as possible and they want your money. No apology, no nothing. There are too many decent places with decent owners, staff and chefs. Mumbai Lounge is not one of them. AVOID

Lovely place and great food,only thing that spoilt it was the hovering of staff over your table, felt like we were constantly been watched and rushed to eat our meal.

Oh dear ,its Saturday night all you want is a nice place to eat ,Mumbai lounge has most things right apart from atmosphere, where the back ground music, why put people in the basement with no outside windows .it's not great. upstairs fine ,please put some tunes on create a nice place to eat,it's not mcdonalds fast food and leave. Food is good you need more for the experience.

I'm no expert, but the Spiced Crust Monkfish must be worth a Michelin star on its own! A pleasurable treat with every mouthful. The rest of our party were equally impressed with their dishes. The staff were very friendly and attentive (but not intrusively so), surprising under the circumstances as the restaurant was extremely busy at the time. On the way out, I noticed their trophy cabinet, tucked away by the spiral staircase, copiously filled with awards. This has got to be the best Indian Restaurant I have ever been to bar none.

absolutely disgusting service tonight, booked a table for 7.30, arrived and were POINTED to stand to the side (ZERO COMMUNICATION OR EXPLANATION) then POINTED to go at the bar to sit, AGAIN NO INFO ON WHY, NO INDICATION AS TO HOW LONG THE TABLE WOULD BE, TOTALLY 100% ZERO COMMUNICATION, UNBELIEVABLE. STAY AWAY IF YOU FEEL VALUED AS A CUSTOMER

Beautiful Indian food in a buzzing setting with good service. Atmosphere is good and service is good, but the star of the show is the food. Poppadoms good with tasty sauces. Main course delicious. I had Asams Lamb which was in a thick, fairly spicy sauce with big, delicious pieces of tender lamb. Absolutely gorgeous. Portions are a very good size. Naan breads are individual size but still large. One of my favourite Indian restaurants. For convenient car parking, park in Q Park on the Stonebow or Castle car park.

By far one the best curries we have had in a long time Recommend the chicken Molee and starters the baari which is mushrooms Absolutely beautiful

Booked to come a for meal for my wife's birthday and after reading some of the past reviews we were a bit dubious. But, we were pleasantly surprised! I ordered the chicken passanda and my wife ordered the Chicken massala and both came piping hot and so creamy. They were flavourful and good portion sizes. We shared the mushroom rice, some chips and a garlic and cheese nann, all of which were delicious. I'd definitely recommend Mumbai Lounge for a lovely meal.

Very attentive waiters/waitresses constantly on the lookout for anyone wanting a top up or change to the order, fantastic food served super efficiently even though it was obviously cooked fresh to order. Sometimes with Indian restaurants many dishes taste the same because of the base sauce, 6 main dishes served all with uniquely different flavours

We Came here yesterday with 2 friends after an afternoon in York, we had a fabulous meal with drinks, the service was 100% price was reasonable, I would advise booking as they turned so many people away. Great chefs & fantastic team front of house. Would recommend to friends, will be booking again

Worst curry I’ve ever had! We went here Sunday night whilst visiting York, and would definitely not return or recommend. We ordered a paneer tikka masala to share, the sauce was like water with no taste to it at all. The paneer was one of the most awful things I’ve tasted in my life and that isn’t an exaggeration. It’s a shame as the other items we ordered (rice, chips and naan) wasn’t too bad but obviously if you go for a curry then the main thing is the curry, which was absolutely disgusting. We did complain and they took the price of the curry of our bill however still a huge disappointment. Such a shame!!

The place never fails to tick all boxes. We always go here when we are visiting York. Staff members top drawer,friendly and attentive. Food of the best quality in taste and presentation. All washed down with a pint of Corbra Indian beer. Well done again Mumbai lounge

Didn't have to wait too long. Strangely, we were escorted to the door before being given our takeaway. My daughters korma was bland and had brown meat. We had 2 other dishes, but they looked and tasted exactly the same but didnt have much taste at all. Spent £80 but no usual extras given. Really disappointed & wouldn't retutn

Had a reservation last night. Whole place felt chaotic. Ordered 4 x popadoms, only 2 arrived, requested the other 2, no further pickles without asking. Starter was completely tasteless. Had to go to the bar to ask for additional drinks as we were not attended to. Main course was also very bland the majority of the meal was left. Asked to speak to the owner who offered a 15% discount and a free drink, I don’t believe he understood our dissatisfaction and the discount made everything ok. All in all, food poor and service non existent.

Great food..had a meal out with a group..service a bit rushed..we had a set menu..great but too much food really.. Definitely a good spot for big eaters..not sure will be back anytime soon..

We stopped by around dinner time without reservation and the staff kindly found us a table. As we looked over the menu we wondered if there is a lamb dish that the staff can recommend. 3 different young ladies came by and when we asked, said they didn’t know the menu and will find someone else to answer our question. That person never came. Finally we just ordered a chicken Marsala and a lamb dish in cream sauce. The chicken marsala was good but the lamb dish was quite different. The sauce is very sweet almost like a custard. It wasn’t bad but just not what I expected. The presentation was quite nice putting the plates on heated grill to keep it hot is a nice touch and the portion is reasonable as well for the price.

Had an amazing experience here last Saturday. We did not book and were seated immediately, the food was delicious and the service was brilliant. The staff are very friendly and accommodating, will definitely be returning! I now understand why everyone calls this the best curry house in York!

Amazing curry house. I've been working in York for 7 months and only started going recently, we now go once a week. Staff are super friendly, made really good friends with them, to the extent they now pick my meal for me. Must admit, the lamb balti is by far the nicest curry I've ever had, the lamb just fell apart. 100% recommend!!
