Encantadora camarera sonriente.

It was five years ago that we last ate at the Pilgrim Hotel so good time to go back and see how things have changed. We had Sunday lunch with relatives travelling from South Wales. With us in the Midlands it's a good place to meet mid-way. Everything was fine. We had been advised that we might have to eat later than we had planned because of a large party being dealt with but no worries at all. Despite arriving early we were met pleasantly and things move smoothly forward. Staff were without exception friendly whist being professional and helpful without being overbearing. The Sunday lunch was highlighted by a starter of scampi - unusual but very welcome. The roast were nothing special but OK - roast pork better than the beef but I guess it's a matter of opinion. All in all we had a very pleasant experience and will certainly not wait another five years before going back especially as the cost, even including wine, was at £22 a head very acceptable.

We ate both nights of our stay at the Pilgrim Hotel, and were happy with both meals. You can choose to sit in the traditional dining room, or the modern conservatory, overlooking the hillside. We opted for the conservatory, which was well-heated, and airy. The manager told us on Thursday that they'd had some fresh goat delivered, so that night I had Moroccan goat burgers with salad and my other half tucked into goat curry with homemade onion bhajis. The next night we both had duck breast served with spiced red cabbage, and layered buttery potatoes prunes. Scrummy! We were too full for dessert, but even though the kitchen was closing, they agreed to make us a cheeseboard to have in he bar with a bottle of wine a little later. How's that for service?!!

NEVER disappointed dining here! Tasty, lovingly prepared and served by a smashing team of people. Nothing is ever too much trouble. Deepak's fabulous Madras curry was a taste sensation as usual, as were the bhaji's, perfect nans and delicate rice, I just love it!! Sticky toffee pudding with the lovliest thick, fresh cream ever and a drizzle of toffee sauce finished off a delightful meal. I can't remember what my better half had for his main meal as I was too engrossed in my own!! Trevor's suggested wines, really complimented our meal, he knows his stuff! Highly recommended. Stayed at the hotel for 3 nights and ate at the restaurant twice and 3 breakfasts. The food is really very good and tasty, fresh and a good choice. Had the steak and ale pie one evening, lovely. Fish cakes and salad for starters again great. The second evening was my birthday and I had the cottage pie which was my first choice as is a favourite of mine, yummy. The pate starter was even better so nicely presented and really really tasty. Well done to the chefs. The ladies in the bar and reception were so friendly and helpful, especially the lady with dark hair in the bar and daisy I believe who looked after us so well in reception. I was even treated to a cocktail in the bar courtesy of the lovely staff for my b'day as well as small table decorations for my birthday meal, what a personal touch.Highly recommend to anyone in the area.

Returned to "The Valley" restaurant , with some friends, following a less than impressive previous visit...See my previous reviews, when I listed it as 1 *.Dubious about this visit, I didn't hold out much hope but was proven wrong and had a very pleasant meal. The entire group commented on him much improved the food and service was. The main meals arrived together and were warm and generously proportioned. Not huge but certainly satisfactory. The noodle stir-fry was delicious, the gammon meltingly tender with a perfectly fried egg and the curry provided the heat expected. The Bakewell tart was superb...light and moist and very tasty. The custard, however, was a bit insipid and the ice cream bland and tasteless but these were only accompaniments to the main event. The group members did comment that it wasn't the most exciting menu for a hotel and thought it more pub-ish than designed for a restaurant...everything being safe and simple to prepare! In all, a pleasant meal in a pleasant setting. Will probably visit again when in Hereford.

Two friends who lunch. We both had baked salmon, dill sauce and beautiful fresh veg. It was of a quality that really was exceptional. New potatoes with a bit of butter, broccoli and carrots steamed I think, al dente. The salmon was perfectly cooked, WOW, and with this little pool of sauce. So simple, so stunning, not cheap but why should it be. Some food is prepared with a deft and loving hand, and this felt like it. Two chefs here, one from the european tradition, the other indian. I will be returning to try authentic indian food too I hope.Service and surroundings beautiful.Tricky access for anyone very disabled but staff kind and helpful.

This is probably one of the best restaurants within driving distance of Hereford. I had two dinners there on a business trip staying at the Pilgrim Hotel. The menu offers a few pub standards and curries, a curry of the day, and a pie of the day. Well I like I a nice pie, but on my first night it was Cottage Pie, which I don't really consider a proper pie because it doesn't have a pastry crust, so I decided to postpone my pie-eating to day two and had a sirloin - good meat cooked just as I had asked, so no problems there. Second night the pie of the day was......... Cottage again, but they had faggots as a special, so I thought I'd give it a try. To be fair I hadn't tasted them since I was a child, and I'd forgotten just how powerfully offaly they could be. Didn't enjoy them much, but I ate them and I blame myself for being overly experimental. Though it's called a restaurant, it's actually a bar with a restaurant adjoining, and they don't mind whether you eat in the bar or the more formal restaurant - it's all the same menu.

Smiling and very pleasant barmaid quickly served our drinks and it was especially good to find Bass bitter on draught, very pleasant pint. We ordered the beef together with a round of brie, bacon and cranberry sandwiches which were served with a very fresh salad and crisps. Excellent sandwiches with very generous fillings both had been clearly freshly made.Whilst at the hotel we studied the other menus and would most certainly recommend this restaurant to other travellers.

The Valley restaurant certainly reflects the Indian heritage and background of the chef. A uniquely Indian twist is given to a number of dishes. Not to everyone's taste but I found it enjoyable. As is common with so many restaurants nowadays, and I am not criticising it, the menu tends to be the same for most of the week unless some other locally sourced ingredients run out. The wine list is adequate as I said in my review of the hotel the house wines ran out and were not available in full until the last night of my stay.

Reading some of the earlier reviews was quite interesting as the older ones, up to around the end of 2012 are all very good but from Christmas on only one has a good word to say about the place, I wonder what happened at Christmas?Let me add another ‘good’ review for 2013. My wife and I stayed one night in the hotel which I have reviewed separately and frankly was unimpressed with. What turned a 2 star rate for them into a 3 was the food which, on the night we were there, was excellent. Now don’t get too excited, I’m not talking Michelin star standard but just maybe AA 1 Rosette standard. In such a dowdy hotel the food quality was unexpected and much appreciated. I had the smoked haddock soufflé to start followed by the trio of pork, both well cooked and presented, there was a little too much rabbit food under the soufflé but it was easy to simply leave it on the plate. It was flagged as being with an anchovy & rosemary butter sauce, not too sure where it got to but still the soufflé was light, fluffy and well cooked. The pork was accompanied by mashed potato and an apple compote both working well with the different meat presentations. My wife had a vegetarian starter, a goat’s cheese and potato terrine, basically a large piece of cheese wrapped in sliced potato. Not my style but I wasn’t eating it, she was and enjoyed it. She followed this with a slow braised blade of Herefordshire beef Bordelaise which was cooked to a tenderness indicative of long slow braising. It was full of flavour fell to pieces and almost needed no chewing. It came with a root vegetable puree, glazed baby onions & red wine thyme jus and they all worked together very well indeed. We asked for and were given, an extra plate of vegetables which are shown on the menu as being extra but I don’t think we were charged for them, neither should we, vegetables are the least expensive part of the meal and should always be part of the main’s price, restaurant who charge extra are a pet hate of mine and are always marked down. The wine list is compact but well balanced and not overly expensive, one always expects wine to be at least the standard three times the shop price anyway. On the negative side, the main restaurant we were directed to, is in a conservatory with large plain wooden tables sat side by side, rather like the refectory at a public school. There was no atmosphere not helped by there being no tablecloths and small paper napkins. Breakfast is served in a smaller side room with proper tablecloths; even if the top covers were cheap paper ones as were the napkins but at least the room had a cosy feeling, dinner in here would have been much better. The wife and I have been in the food trade for a combined total of over sixty years so are not people who think MacD or KFC constitutes ‘Fine Dining’ we know the difference between Sole Meunière and fish and chips or rather rubbish out of box into a microwave from cooking by a proper chef. The ‘terrible’ reviews of earlier this year are inexplicable to us, perhaps the chef was off and the washer-up was cooking, all I can say was the night we were there it was very good food and yes we would happily eat there again.

Travelling from South Wales, being hungry, not knowing the area, we called for Sunday lunch. On entering through the reception lobby, there was no greeting or smiling face from the receptionist, just a blank face. A smile would have been nice.In the bar area we were greated by a lovely young lady (who also doubled as a waitress), with a warm friendly smile (smiles are so important!). She was polite and very helpful. The restaurant was quite busy, about 60% full with people eating the two course option at £12.95. We were well looked after by two of the three waitresses, one actually ignored all the customers and proceeded to set up tables, for what I guess was breakfast the next day.I chose the pate starter. This was served with toast, home made chutney and rocket salad. It was a lovely starter, very tasty. My partner had the home made soup, which she told me was rather bland. (She is an expert soup maker though, so her expectations were high). We both ordered the roast beef main. What a shock when it arrived. A lovely selection of vegetables, unfortunately only enough for one person. The rest of the plate was the exact opposite - a huge plate full of four large slices of beef, lovely thick gravy, numerous roast potatoes and two huge yorkshire puddings. The plate was so full my appetite immediately disappeared and I began to wish I hadn't had the starter! My advice would be to have the main and a sweet, then you have appetite options. All the food was well cooked and was o.k. Not good, not bad. Maybe another visit, maybe not. My main comment would be that for £12.95 you are getting a huge volume of food with no thought or care about presentation or sophistication. In fact the plate full reminded me of the lorry drivers cafe at Lymme Service Station on the M6 and all for £6.00. Good food, piled high for big people. Finally, I do think at £12.95, which I think is expensive for the quality we got, you cannot compensate quality for volume. I would prefer less food of a higher quality.

We went here for Christmas Lunch after seeing excellent reviews on here, and after a previous visit (which was indeed excellent). Sadly, they really let themselves down on Christmas Day. It was like a different place. It had none of the charm of the previous visit, overspilling bookings into a characterless function room, we patiently waited in reception to be breezed past by all the waiting staff (not one of them acknowledging our arrival). Ignored for five minutes of waiting, we went to the bar to request our table. We were shown to the sad function room table and promptly served the starters by a stony faced waitress who didn't ask us if we wanted drinks or even wish us Happy Christmas. Not a good start. I had to go back to the bar myself (out of the function room and down the hall) to ask for table water and the wine list as it was clear this wouldn't be offered. We eventually got drinks just before the mains. The food was very poor, basic, unseasoned fetter that smacked of mass catering. I had the turkey, which was piled up on top of soggy roast potatoes (hiding them?), may as well have been thrown on the plate. It was likened to a soup shop. It would have been funny if we weren't about to pay £60 a head + drinks. The vegetables were boiled to death. Resting a fork on the sprouts - it almost sank right through. Depressing. The service was dire. Badly trained, grumpy staff, partially cleared each table...leaving debris from crackers piled up at one end of the table, all side plates and veg platters through to the end. I'm afraid none of our party finished their meals and we left very disappointed...and still hungry.Management appeared to be shocked at our disappointment (raised during the main course) and we managed to negotiate £20 per head off the bill (originally offered 10). Even with that I can honestly say we'd never return. Such a pity after such high hopes. Was it a case of "pile 'em high" I don't know? Very sad.

Noticed an odd school dinners type smell in the main restaurant. The teenage waiting staff practically ignored us on arrival, and the service failed to improve after that. Wine and water were delivered to our table without any offer to taste or place the bottles. The menu is fairly dull except for a couple of Indian specials. A chicken tikka starter was nicely spiced, but the main courses were very poorly plated and very average. A pork belly with bubble n'squeak turned up as mashed potato with veg pieces embedded and a nasty sauce. The accompanying dish of mixed veg also had cabbage. Why? A dish of baked salmon was OK but again smothered in a uninviting sauce.

I ate whilst staying at the Pilgrim Hotel and the food was excellent. Service was friendly and the choice good. The Herefordshire Rib Eye steak was beautifully cooked and I can't wait t go back again.

Stayed on business and thoroughly enjoyed the views, the service, the staff and the food. Breakfast was super [large portions available]I had a bar snack the first night, a beautiful home made curry which was created by their Indian chef and chose a Hereford Rib eye steak from the a la carte menu on the second night. Just perfect, I'll be back and judging by the locals in the restaurant I won't be alone.

A party of 13 descended upon the restaurant for an evening meal, having selected our menu choices in the preceding week to avoid delays on the evening because of the large number. Everything about the evening was absolutely perfect , the views, ambience, timings, service, menu choices and the food was beautifully prepared and excellent.

Fantastic overall experience. Well presented pub with a fantastic atmosphere and great food! The majority of the food was handmade and it all tasted delicious. Very high quality food and large portions. We were encouraged to customise the food we ordered which is a big help to those who have specific dietary requirements. The member of staff that greeted us upon entering the Black Lion was very friendly and created a welcoming atmosphere. We will definitely be back soon! Thank you!

Booked an evening meal whilst staying in log cabin near by. Large portions of home cooked food, quick service and friendly and helpful staff. Reasonably priced, in fact we were surprised and were expecting to pay more for the quality. The decor is lovely as well, quite cozy on an autumn evening. Will definitely return next time we are in the area
