A landmark within Petersfield which has consistently been excellent over the years. Perfect venue for an event. Nice food and well stocked bar with friendly staff. Historic building too

Visited last night and had another superbly cooked burger with wonderful chips and coleslaw. Served by a very pleasant and attentive young chap who makes our group of five grumpy old men smile. Many thanks for serving good food at a reasonable cost. It’s a shame that the other eateries in Petersfield don’t work by the same rules.

What a wonderful building, fantastic upstairs function room and overall amazing staff. We booked for a post wedding party. The whole experience was a pleasure. Jake (the owner, I believe) is so friendly, chilled and accommodating. Nothing was to much trouble, he just goes with the flow. We were allowed access to prep the room early before the party and return the next day after the party to remove/dismantle our fixtures/lights etc. All of our guests loved the room, it has plenty of character, your own personal bar, toilets, screen to project pictures and food service area. We would definitely use it again for future party's or events. Big THANK YOU to Jake and his team, it was a wonderful night and you were all so accommodating and lovely.

I would love to write a lovely review for this restaurant but unfortunately we never got to visit. Booked a table a month in advance & was left a extremely blunt voicemail the day before our booking which said “I’m not sure if anyone has contacted you but we have had to cancel your booking”No reason, No apology! This left my friend & I without a booking the day before we were both travelling some distance to meet here. Needless to say with service like this I will not be booking again anytime soon!

We booked because of quality of previous owners. Out hearts sank once we walked in for Christmas day lunch - table cloths only fit for kiddies pizza party, crackers too cheap to make a bang, menus were big standard festive one with price showing £30 (whilst we were charged £60!) run out of wine glasses and the ciabatta with our starters stone cold and limp. Staff were polite but their attire was varied with no sense of festive cheer. We stuck with it as it was easier than walking out - instead enjoying a proper Christmas dinner at home on Boxing Day. The review score is more than generous as the proprietor only took over the place a few weeks ago so we're giving them the benefit of the doubt but will be a long long long long time before we even consider going back. Ho ho ho

I’m really not easily impressed, previous reviews will confirm that, but I have to say our visit today to The Folly Wine Bar & Restaurant definitely has!Our invitation was for lunch with a group of others to celebrate friends Ruby Wedding Anniversary and 80th birthday. Right from the welcome drink being readily assessable (chilled!) to the discreet clearing away at the end of the event this team at the Folly Wine Bar deliver an excellent experience. The food was superb. The pate was delicious, a good sized serving as was the toasted brioche, chutney and salad leaves. For the first time ever I felt full after eating my main course of Ceaser salad, a good sized portion of chicken, again was delicious, plenty of dressing &croutons. The cheesecake for dessert again was also delicious and a good size. Service was efficient but discreet, the offer of an extra napkin was a nice touch. My request for a fork to eat my dessert was met with an ‘of course no problem’. It’s a well oiled machine here which makes it enjoyable for the customer, it’s service with a smile, a master class in how it should be done. Coffee and tea was served downstairs in the sunshine which was also lovely. There was another event following ours but we didn’t feel rushed which was good. Two very small observations I would make though would be to offer dessert forks with dessert and to either use linen napkins to match the beautiful laundered table cloths or use a thicker paper version. I know this is minor details and there are financial considerations but as I warned at the start I’m fussy! I wish we lived nearer because if I was having a celebration I would definitely have it here! Having said that we are going to come back and have supper one evening!

The bar man got it wrong and after telling him nicely it was wrong he said I had to use my PS and qs to get served there (which I was as always) then made me feel really uncomfortable, then saying stop looking at me. I don't know if this man was the manager but he had the audacity to speak to me a customer the way he did was outrageous, no excuse for this which he may come up with. Not knowing Petersfield we chose Upstairs on thr strength of trip advisor reviews and the promise of Porteguese food. Half past seven on a Friday evening and the place was deserted. The staff were friendly and welcoming but it turned out that the Portuguese chef had recently left and been replaced by an English chef. He is probably a very nice person and doubtless competent but the menu was dull and boring. Nothing exciting so2 of us chose steak and the other fish and chips. Steak came with some lukewarm matchstick chips and a tiny garnish of salad leaves. The best thing on the plate was the chummichirri sauce. The steak was not particularly tasty although cooked well enough. The fish and chips was described as "perfectly palatable" Damned with faint praise is the expression. There was nothing on the pudding menu to excite anybody. There was nothing actually wrong with the meal. The staff are friendly and efficient. Service was good but not outstanding. The whole bill including two glasses of wine and a small bottle of water was £80.00. All in all a disappointing experience and not really very good value for money.

What can I say? A wonderful place and myself and my girlfriend were very satisfied to say the least. In fact, the pair of us had very little to complain about when we came a few weeks ago and hope to do so again quite soon! The waitress who served us was very lovely and friendly (and kindly recommended a glass of vino verde), the venue was just as lovely and there was this charming swing music in the background giving it such a classy feel, and I think that's just the word I'm looking for - classy! All that was left to judge was quality of the the food... and neither of us were disappointed! I had prawns piri piri followed by fish and chips and both were equally delightful and my girlfriend was more than fond of her chicken fajitas. Incredible I think was her choice of adjective. Our compliments to the chef and we're now in that awkward position where we don't know whether to choose the same again next time as we both enjoyed our meals so much, or try something else from the menu... Though I'm absolutely sure the rest of the food is equally divine! Great service, lovely atmosphere and wonderful food. We look forward to coming again and would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone... or at least, anyone with a bit of class as that's exactly what you get here! Class.

The venue is amazing, beautifully decorated, lovely warm ambience, although a little background music would have been welcome. Starter at £8, prawns Piri Piri: 5 defrosted frozen prawns (albeit large ones) in a bland sauce with a little chilli. Was hoping for prawns in their shells for the price, what we got would have been a passable tapas. The Portuguese fish stew had some fish in it, but was poorly flavoured, just tomato and a bay leaf. It didn't taste.., well, of anything much. £15 seemed a lot for rather little. I'm no cook but could have produced either dish without breaking a sweat. The desert was lovely, pear in red wine on a bed of prune compote, but ruined by OFF mascarpone. By that time, I was too embarrassed to send it back. I know places have their off days but unless the quality of the food improves, I doubt the restaurant will survive. I cannot see how it can continue to be viable. Needs a new chef. Waitress was lovely, though. Sack him, and keep her!

Dined here on a Wednesday evening on the recommend by the owner of a local b&b we were staying at. Reasonably choice of different Mediterranean and British dishes, there were three of us and our orders ranged from a north African tagine, a Portuguese fish stew to good old fashioned British cod and chips. All dishes were cooked well and very tasty. Staff were friendly and the chef came out to ask how everything was, which is nice to see. Unfortunately we were the only ones dining which is always a bit off putting and it wasn't particularly early having arrived at around 7:30. The food and service is good so we couldn't understand why it wasn't busier. Two of us went back the following evening and had the tapas dishes, again very tasty especially the garlic prawns. I came here for an acoustic night around a month ago with a family member, and the venue is very lovely. Beautiful decoration and settings. The bar area is great, a wide variety of wines and alcohol and all the staff members were fantastic and especially happy to help. The acoustic musicians were wonderful and it wasn't a bit too loud. The menu does not have a large selection, but very interesting dishes. The waitress brought us over a bowl of lovely olives, sundries tomato and bread. The food could have been better though - my sea bass was over cooked and my chorizo starter came with bread - when we were already given bread when we arrived. The waitress came and gave us a jug of water without us asking, which is always good, however she did not pour it for us and did not remove the glasses already on the table. She also gave us extra glasses for the water. So we ended up having a big crowd of glasses on the table for no reason!I may appear to be fussy but I work in a very popular resteraunt in Hampshire with extremely high standards, and I know these are basic things all serving staff have to remember. However I did feel that the positive and friendly attitude of the girls serving did make up for it. The food however, was disappointing. I really think my yes/no opinion all hangs on a next potential visit! If you're planning on getting lightly drunk you probably won't notice the downsides but if you like a good all round wonderful experience I wouldn't recommend. Shame as all the staff as so great.

We went mid week and it was very quiet so, a bit difficult to create any atmosphere with 6 other customers and just us 2 in a reasonably large room! The wine selection is good an reasonably priced. Food was not bad but it was not great either. I had risotto balls to start which were not good at all. It was evident that they were not freshly made but either ready prepared and then frozen or purchased as pre-frozen goods then fried to within an inch of their life. My friend wanted to order the green Thai curry but much to our surprise at £15.95 it was more expensive than the Petersfield authentic Thai called Lemongrass where Thai currys are made by an authentic Thai chef! In the end he opted for the fajitas. Again very expensive at £15.95 but he said they tasted quite good but were not good value and so he wouldn't order again. The menus were varied but seemed to be too much to choose from. We were starting to see why the restaurant was so empty 1. too many menu items meaning it had no real theme/identity 2. it's pricy and not great value 3. quality control is an issue for this place because many have scored it highly but it was not our experience. Finally, we were a little frustrated when trying to get/pay our bill, owner and chef too busy chatting to worry about customers and their dinning experience (place so empty we could hear the whole conversation so we knew it was about nothing in particular, just idle chit chat) so, eventually we had to get up and leave our to pay in order to get their attention. Suffice to say no tip...and it is rare for me not to tip 10-15% for good food, value and service but sadly this place lacked in all three. All in all a nice location but over priced for what it is.

"Life's too short to drink poor wine", it says somewhere in the Folly which now seems to be called "The Folly Wine and Ale House". We remember it years ago as The Folly Wine Bar.We'd no sooner sat down than we were invited to order a drink and when the house Shiraz came, it was soft, fruity and a great temperature. We both had the Folly home made burgers and they were tasty, arriving within a short time, freshly cooked with crisp fries and coleslaw. The decor is comfortable, the ambience good, especially with a window seat and the service faultless. I must give the toilet 10/10 as well - clean, well stocked and with a lovely hand cream on offer.

Stopped for a few glasses of wine on route to London to find two young music students playing Jazz - what a joy to see and such talent writing some of the pieces played on the night by themselves! The Venue is warm friendly and charming with wine and food second to none. We are so pleased that we popped up for a break in Petersfield and found this place and well done to the Boys playing and the management for allowing them the opportunity to show their skills.Every Thursdays - pop down and see them just great !!!!

We had a mid-week meal here and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. The menu will not get foodies excited but the quality and ambiance was very good as was the service - although the red wine was too cold - the radiator behind our table worked well to rectify this. Although we had not booked and the restaurant was empty when we first looked in (at 19.30) by the time we had enjoyed a drink in the wine bar downstairs and ambled back up the restaurant was quite busy - helped by a party of 10. It's a lovely building all timber frames etc reminiscent of a bar conversion. Limited selection of wines but reasonably priced - good value overall.

went to this reastaurant for the first time last night (tuesday evening )the food was excellent all through the 3 courses.being mid week it was fairly quiet which was nice as one could relax and talk without being heard by other tables.scallops and rib eye steak was lovely.good choice of desserts and cheese board which many restaurants do not offer.the waiter was attentive and would go there again.weekends might be bit busy so we would probably go again mid week.this restaurant also takes tastecard which is a bonus.a special board is available as well as the standard menu.we come from waterlooville so the 11 mile journey each way was worth it.

My daughter, who works in Petersfield, selected the Folly as a suitable place for meals and entertainment following her wedding. This proved to be a great success as we took over the complete upstairs area for the Saturday evening. The management of the Folly reserved the space for us for the whole of the afternoon and evening and this superb accommodation allowed us to set out and decorate the room and tables to suit the special event. The natural ambience was enhanced by courteous and professional staff that were in attendance all evening to ensure a memorable event.Food was more than excellent; enjoyed by and commented on by all the guests. Thanks to the Folly !

My wife and I now visit The Folly Restaurant two or three evenings each week, and it never fails to satisfy our expectations! Whether it is very busy or fairly quiet the atmosphere is always friendly and the staff very efficient. Because the locally-sourced food is cooked when ordered new customers sometimes begin to look a little impatient, but only until the generous and tasty portions arrive. There is a great choice on the printed menus, and the new chef has added a few interesting new dishes to the large "specials" selection. With about eight red wines by the glass and a choice of whites and beers too, there is plenty to choose from.

Our food was acceptable but not great. We were the only people in the restaurant for lunch and the atmosphere was dire. The whole place, including the kitchen seemed shabby and not very well cared for. We were seated close to the kitchen door which was kept open all the time. This was very off-putting as the view wasn't particularly nice and we could hear crashing of pans and pinging of the microwave. I wouldn't be encouraged to make a return visit. After reading some of the reviews on tripadvisor I was disappointed, maybe in the evening by candlelight the place might look better.

Given advice from Tripadvisor review and faced with closure of our first choice we came to The Folly ; proved an apt handle for our choice! The fajitas were just great; pancakes could have been bigger to keep the shirt clean but that's life. Unfortunately the compliments stop there for the rest was bland or unacceptable. Experimental soup and tasteless addition to scallops were not great. Two puds, one great, the other very disappointing. Always finish with encouragement! There was no debate about our disappointments and no charge for the offending items. The service was impeccable and for that thank you.

Following on from my wife's birthday dinner treat back in April, it was my Daughter Andrea's birthday on Monday August 11th so I booked a table at Folly's upstairs again. We were not let down. Another fabulous meal, excellent service, excellent food and excellent wines. The restaurant manager who looked after us did a superb job, my deep baked camembert was cooked to perfection as were all starters. My son in law's chicken liver parfait was perfection! He left some, I finished it off. All of our main courses were superbly cooked and superbly presented, my daughter could not all of her chicken fajita's as the portion was very plentiful. What can I say about this restaurant? if you are looking for a welcoming, friendly ambience, superbly cooked food and attentive service to match, come to Folly's upstairs, you will not be disappointed!David OnslowBordonGU35 0TR

Lovely surroundings for a special occasion and the service is always lovely and friendly from Mary (who was chefing on this night) and her waiting staff. A slight disappointment to begin as both of my husband choices were finished but what we then both had was delicious. My Dover Sole was particularly lovely. As it was a very warm night we didn't go for our usual red wine but tried a lovely New Zealand Chenin Blanc

Last night, Mum, Dad and I visited the Folly Wine Bar and Restaurant. We have eaten here before and am happy to say that we have never been disappointed.Last night we started with some bread and olives before out starters; Mum and I shared a beetroot and grilled haloumi salad while Dad watched attempting to steal haloumi... It was a delicious starter, sweet beetroot and the cheese went so well together. Our main courses were herb crusted cod for Dad, roasted pepper and goats cheese salad for Mum and a rump steak with a garlic butter and blue cheese sauce for me, I can't eat potato so they whipped up a beautiful side salad for me. The steak, sauce and salad was delicious. My steak was cooked beautifully, the knife went through it like butter. For dessert Mum and I had a trio of puddings, a lemon crunch cheesecake which was beautifully zingy, a berry creme brûlée which was creamy, rich and with a wonderful crunch as spoon broke sugar and a chocolate brownie which was, I must admit, my favourite. The atmosphere at the Folly has never disappointed and the staff are always so happy to help, we will definitely be going back.

After having lunch and dinner upstairs at the folly this week I would like to say how good the food is. The service was very friendly, selection of wine probably the best I have seen in years and the menu covers a nice range which is good as I am a fussy eater and accommodating for this was not a problem for them and they let me know all the meals they could adapt for me. Really nice atmosphere. I saw they have a summer menu on the way which will give me a good excuse to go again soon.

This was our first visit to the Upstairs at the Folly. The restaurant looked very nice, quite exclusive, although quiet empty for a Saturday evening. We were welcomed by staff, who were extremely attentive throughout the night. The food was absolutely delicious, piping hot and very good portion sizes! There was a lovely romantic atmosphere with the lights and space between the tables. The only slight criticism was the service was a little too quick as we prefer a slower pace, however, when we asked to wait for deserts this wasn't a problem at all.Thank you for a lovely evening, with gorgeous food!

I have been living and working in the area for many years and remember when The Folly was one of the only decent restaurants in the town. Now there are many more to choose from but Upstairs at the Folly remains one of the best - especially if you are in a large group because they seem to handle large parties with ease. We recently held a family birthday celebration at The Folly and can honestly say that the food was terrific as usual, the service was friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Fab!

Well, on Wednesday evening this week (April 9th 2014) I had booked a table of 4 for my wife's birthday dinner plus daughter and son in law. None of us had ever been there before but had heard it was nice. As a surprise, I told the wife we were going to the Weatherspoons pub for her birthday and she believed me when we pulled into the Weatherspoon pub car park.On entering the restaurant we were straight away greeted warmly by the staff, shown to our table, I looked around the restaurant and I was amazed at all of the wine and water glasses were so highly polished! They stood out, all shining away. The menu selection was top class, several options to choose from, however, the chicken liver pate and scallops were absolutely superb as was the Haloumi cheese. For main course, I chose the belly pork, it was the best belly pork I have ever tried, my wife's rib eye steak was cooked to perfection as was the chicken breast and pheasant. We had a really enjoyable evening which was made even better by the service provided by the waiting staff, they were all superb. This was my first visit to "upstairs at Folly's Wine Bar and Restaurant" it most certainly will not be my last. If you are looking to go for a very good meal in a restaurant with a good atmosphere, wonderful service and superb food in the east Hampshire area, I highly commend this venue.David OnslowBordonGU35 0TRHants.

We stayed one night and ate in restaurant. Only had starters but food was very nice. Friendly staff member called Olly. Couldn’t have been more helpful. Good nights sleep. Then breakfast !! One male member of staff who just couldn’t be bothered. Zero customer service. Got us a hot drink but no offer of fruit juice, toast or any cereal. Glasses on table too.
