We are staying at a friend's house in Forest Row dog-sitting whilst she's on holiday and decided to try the Sunday lunch at this restaurant. We booked a table in advance just in case. We were warmly greeted by Grace who also served us our food. She was charming, bubbly, efficient and very helpful. My husband chose the Roast Beef whilst I had the Roast Pork, both of which were delicious and perfectly cooked. There was a large selection of vegetables with the dinners, plenty of gravy as well as a large Yorkshire Pudding. The portions were so generous that neither of us had room for dessert, although we were sorely tempted. For drinks my husband chose Thatchers Gold Cider whilst I had Becks Vier. We will definitely come back again on a week day and try some of their other dishes. But the roast Sunday lunches are very good and excellent value for money. Thanks to all the staff for making our Sunday lunchtime so enjoyable.

Visited this place for first time today & was pleasantly surprised. We had tried to book a Sunday roast in 4 other venues that were all full. When we arrived at 1.30pm today there was only one other table occupied, so we were concerned that we had made a big mistake. But as we were hungry we decided to stay. I'm so glad that we did as the lunch was delicious. We had roast beef £14 & roast pork £12. They came with lots of veg & a large homemade Yorkshire pudding. We had a 11 month old baby with us & a highchair was provided. There were 2 young waitresses who were very polite, friendly and helpful. One of the group has lots of food intolerances & the chef was very helpful in working out what choices she could have from the menu. I was full after the main course & therefore regretfully couldn't ask for the sticky toffee pudding with salted caramel ice-cream. At £7 it sounds expensive for a dessert to me. I would definitely visit again.

Only good venue in the village serving traditional British cuisine at a great quality. Great variety on the menu, reasonably priced and great portion sizes. Their steaks are amazing, I'd go on a Saturday Night for the Grill Menu and then you MUST STAY for the live band...perfect Saturday Night!

We were staying at the hotel, so dining here was an easy option. My partner ordered the half roast chicken and I had the pie. Both were very nice, we finished up with the cheese board and an Eton mess washed down with plenty of real ale and gin and tonics. The waiter and waitress were friendly and efficient. Due to the bar having live music the restaurant doors were closed. They do a good job of blocking out the noise and I understand why they do it, but it did leave me feeling a bit shut away. Would happily eat here again.

Unfortunately, I forgot my camera so could not document my visit with any images. I had come from a large lunch so I was not overly hungry. That said, I ordered their meat chili, with rice and tortilla chips, with a side of steak fries. The chili was very tasty and not really hot at all, which is great cuz I do have to watch my spicy intake. The fries were prepared very well with a hint of crispy outside and fairly soft and chewable inside, just the way I really like them. I rate them as a very solid 4, well, maybe, a 4.25.

i was welcomed by the staff as if I was important to them. A pleasing aspect was that the waiter knew about their wines- not always the case in some restaurants. The service throughout was attentive but not overbearing. Now, the food. An excellent chicken liver pate accompanied by a salad that had a perfect dressing was followed by a fillet steak cooked exactly as per my request. Finished with a glass of port to cap off a most pleasant evening.

Just had Sunday lunch as a family group. We skipped the starters and had a main course and pudding. The choice of main is not huge but all the choices were things everyone likes. The Sunday roasts were great, especially the chicken, which included a huge chicken breast and leg, with roast potatoes, a Yorkshire pudding, broccoli etc. The staff were helpful. We asked for extra gravy and they were happy to provide us a gravy boat as extra. The puddings were a great, beautifully presented and delicious. Strangely, the restaurant was relatively quiet, a bit of a hidden gem. We will be going back.

Since my last visit and review thereafter, and having seen a huge black board sign claiming to be "Best Sunday lunch in Sussex", outside the restaurant, I was encouraged to try. Accompanied with my friend, we arrived at almost empty restaurant. We were surprised as it was 1.30 pm on Sunday!! We ordered pork belly roast. Yuk. Worst imaginable presentation, drowned in thick brown gravy. Bland tasteless food. Very polite and courteous manager, apologised and refused to accept payment for our lunch. Sadly, it's goodbye to Bram.

First visit with friends for dinner 11 Nov 16: cozy open fire and comfy leather seats in the bar area. Decor a bit bland and basic throughout the bar and restaurant but the service was genuinely friendly and food was a fab surprise. The bar style menu belies the great food within. We had rib eye steaks and venison Wellington style and it got served to a 'wow' factor. The food presentation and food was on par with more upmarket restaurants, and price competitive. Will go again and recommend. Keep it up. N Reindl

We stopped off at the this establishment whilst passing through the area. Dining area was light and airy. The service was average, but the food was disappointing. One of our party had fish and chips. Sadly on arrival we discovered no chips but the poor substitute of severely over salted thin French fries. Which were very difficult to eat.

Went along on a Wednesday night and the restaurant was empty except for a family. Staff were helpful and friendly but you always wonder what the food offer is like if there are so few people around... Food was okay, nice chips but some of the party had burgers which were not particularly hot and lacked the blue cheese which they had chosen. When they mentioned that there was cheddar on the burger not blue cheese, the waitress appeared with a couple of good sized chunks of blue cheese but this didn't really address the problem. Overall I have had worse but I think something needs to be done to enliven the atmosphere of this historic and wonderful building! They have the staff and space, just need some exciting food offers and menu revamps to encourage more people in. Tempt us back please!

Ok. 2 for the food. 4 for the friendly service.Really uninspired menu, tired and very old micro herbs on my plate, that would be better off in the stock pot!! Under seasoned terrine with a weird runny jam on the plate, the cheeses were nice but not very local, especially when you have such beautiful cheese available within 7 miles. The same odd jam didn't compliment anything. Overall, it's no surprise this place is quiet, it has a great location but nothing to give it an attraction.Quality always shines through, both in the produce and the kitchens skills. Sadly it's like a broken umbrella is trying to keep the rain out here!! I see why it has the poor local reputation it does. Sorry guys you could do so much better.

We visited the 221 restaurant on a whim one Friday evening and weren't disappointed! The restaurant was fairly quiet as we were eating quite early in the evening and we were made to feel very welcome and special! The menu is really comprehensive and took us a while to choose what we wanted as everything sounded so lovely! It's all Sherlock Holmes themed too, which I thought was quirky and clever. We were lucky to attend on a Friday as they have a fresh fish delivery where everything on the menu has been caught that morning. Our meals were delicious and presented really nicely! We were really full so we shared a pudding, which was yummy too!My only suggestion is that they separate their smoking area from their outside tables as it was a hot evening and we would probably have eaten outside but there were lots of people smoking.

Lively pub with live music in the bar area, hoped to finish eating before they started playing at 9:30. Really enjoyed the food from the Sherlock Holmes themed menu, but we arrived at 8pm and were only one of three occupied tables at this time, our first course arrived promptly. Second course arrived a bit slow as several other tables were also starting to fill. The restaurant area was only half full and I think there were other diners in the main bar, so waitresses were also serving food and drink in the pub from behind the bar. We finished our main course at 9.15 pm, had to wait 20 mins for a waitress to clear our table and take an order for dessert and another 30 mins for it to arrive. Numerous apologies from waitresses but it would be more helpful if the chef had help in the kitchen. The guy with long grey hair in a denim shirt seemed to be the owner / manager wandering aimlessly with a pint in his hand, didn't lift a finger to help anyone or talk to customers, just looked gormless and ineffectual. Shame.

The new way of offering Carvery as an option was better sabot allowed the kids to have the burgers, homemade and very tasty. I had the beef, it was great, apparently cooked slowly overnight so very soft and succulent. The chef seemed very keen to tell me about it along with the desserts. First time visit to Forest Row and a bit of preliminary research on Tripadvisor and their own website convinced us the Black Peter bar would be good for lunch. We chose to eat in the restaurant rather than the patio (I tend to worry about wasps), We both chose the soft centred scotch egg with piccalilli and brioche soldiers (£5) for starters, attractively presented and flavourful. Our mains followed shortly afterwards, duck breast with broccoli, asparagus and green beans with a red wine jus and chunky chips cooked in duck fat (I was allowed to sneak a couple) while my choice was a perfectly cooked fillet of bream with lobster sauce and prawns, crushed potatoes and broccoli. We didn't have room for dessert.Service from the young Spanish lady was very welcoming and efficient, she was even concerned that the music might be too loud for us - not at all - interesting playlist, think the manager must be about our age.

We recently had the pleasure of staying at the ‘Brambletye’ again for a few days having stayed there previously and once again we were not disappointed. We were made to feel most welcome and all of the staff without exception were attentive and very helpful.Having written a review previously for the hotel, we felt that this time the bar and restaurant should be singled out for special mention.Although we were out exploring for most of our stay, we did use the restaurant (and occasionally the bar) on quite a few occasions (for breakfast, lunch and evening meals) and we can honestly say that on each occasion we were not disappointed with the levels of service and quality of the food served. The atmosphere in the bar and restaurant is very warm and friendly and all of the staff were very obliging. We noted that the hotel takes great pride in the fact that wherever possible ingredients are sourced locally, something which we whole heartedly support and believe in. It is refreshing in this day and age to see hotels and restaurants supporting the local economy. We really could not fault any aspect of our dining experiences, the food was of an excellent quality, arrived at our table within a reasonable time from ordering and the service was exceptional. Whilst it could be argued that the meals were slightly more expensive than some of the restaurants that we have eaten in (although on a par with our local restaurants), the small amount of additional cost was more than made up for by the warm and friendly atmosphere, the quality of the food and service provided. To use a quote from Sherlock Holmes ‘A Study in Scarlet’ (which we feel apt given the literary connection) 'there is nothing like first-hand evidence' and in relation to our experiences at the Black Peter Bar & Restaurant we couldn’t agree more!

We were staying overnight in Forest Row and this place was recommended to us. The food was OK. However, the huge downside was the service. The people on the next table to us who came in after us had actually finished and paid their bill before our starter had even arrived. My husband and I had the burger. However mine arrived some 30 minutes before his and because we thought he had been forgotten I gave him most of my dinner. Just as I had finished dissecting this onto a spare plate - his burger arrived. It was cold and had clearly been sitting somewhere. They'd just forgotten to serve us. We have to say that we did complain and the cost of my husband's meal was deducted from the bill. However, in conclusion our entire dining experience had been ruined. Such a shame when the food is actually quite good but the service lets down the hard work put in by the chefs.

The last few times me and my family really enjoyed but this time me and my husband decided to have a nice evening out and we chose the brambletye . The service and quality of food has majorly improved over the last year ( even though it was good before ) now I can not fault the food at all. We both fancied something different and unique and looking at the specials we could see we were going to get that ( tomato mash who would have thought lol ) so I had the 24 hr braised lamb shank and literally fell of the bone :p my husband had the breaded plaice which was locally sourced which he likes ( with him being a fish monger ) he said it was cooked very well. Over all we will be return again and again to try even more local dishes.( very pleased to hear and see that they are using these ) Thank you brambletye again :)

On first inspection me and my partner didn't know what to expect as we have heard mixed reviews of the brambletye.from reviews and friends . Getting to the point I have to say by far is it the best place around to get food :) me being a vegetarian I had a really nice dish of risotto which was cooked very nicely and presented with elegance. . My hubby on the other hand obviously chose a meat dish to make me suffer but when it came out I have to say even I was tempted lol the plate consisted of a very generous fillet steak with mushrooms and tomato onions and what I think was a cabbage ? Either way it didn't last long and his plate was finished before mine . We wasn't going to have desert as the main was filling enough but seeing sticky toffee which I make a lot of the time at home we decided to try it. Well I wish I could say I make a better one but I couldn't fault it we tried to share it but again it didn't last long . Lol . We were served by a lovely girl who was very chatty but we didn't mind that as we love a conversation ourselves. She and the restaurant made out meal well worth the little drive from nutley and we will sure be returning, even thinking of celebrating my birthday in January :) . Again thank you for your kindness and mouth watering food brambletye you have really outdone yourself. :) Stacy

As we had been busy during the day, no one felt like cooking so we decided to visit the Brambletye for a quick evening meal. I was the only one who had a starter and it arrived along with the children's meals after a short wait. All had been just cooked to order and the children's food - Chicken Kiev and sausage and mash - smelt great. Unbelievably for our two, both plates were cleaned pretty quickly with nothing left. My wife had a burger (great presentation with a long skewer through the lot, onion rings, slad etc and separate chips) and I had the game pudding from the specials of the day menu. This was a simple dish, but absolutely great with mash, chopped cabbage and loads of dark gravy. That, together with the dessert of brioche bread & butter pudding crowned off a fantastic meals. Top marks to the chef, and top marks for the polite service we received also. So many restaurants promise so much but can't deliver. This is not one of them. We'll be back.P.S. Harveys ale too - mmm!

We ate here on word of mouth from a friend and we were not disappointed , the service was good and the range of drinks and wines was very good. The food was amazing and very well priced for fresh produce. I had the Sea bass which was cooked to perfection and tasted amazing. The desserts were very tasty too. We will defiantly be returning and telling our friends.

I ate in the restaurant whilst staying in the hotel on business. The service was prompt and I wasn't left waiting for my meal - especially important as I was on my own! The menu is quite large and reasonably priced, I opted for the baby back ribs - they were tender and literally fell off the bone. I had the banoffee pie for dessert which was beautiful.Really pleased with the meal and service. I'd definitely eat here again.

Came here as we read some good reviews on tripadvisor but for our italian Standards (and English too ) this is a very poor restaurant. Good service though and friendly atmosphere

I am lucky to live in the next parish along the northern edge of Ashdown Forest where we have a good choice of places to eat out. If I am in Forest Row and cannot get back then this is where I would go for a meal or a coffee. Forest Row is expensive, but this establishment isn't, and the food is very good.

I wasn't really sure what to expect when we walked in, as we are just visiting family in the area, what we did find was great service from the staff, mouth watering food and great wines. My only regret is that we couldn't possibly fit in dessert! If you're in the area put Black Peter's on your radar!!

What a wonderful find. The quality of the food and presentation at the Black Peter is outstanding. Our party of six ordered various dishes including a mouthwatering vegetarian option, and the service was prompt, courteous and professional. Our only regret is that having lived in the area for a few years, we have only just discovered this gem. There are plenty of top restaurants and gastro pubs in Sussex, but these guys are unpretentious and deliver great value and quality. Having read some of the reviews, I think this place is a secret waiting to get out. We will definitely be back!

I have to say that the Sunday carvery on Sunday Sep 1st 2013 was the probably the worst meal I have ever had. The choices of meat were good , but they were far to under cooked for my liking, I had selected the pork and the lamb , the lamb I could not even cut with the knife .The roast potatoes looked nothing like what I would class a roast potato to be ,The other vegetable choices were under cooked parsnips, cabbage not too bad, swede which I did not try and cauliflower cheese which was just about exceptable. We booked for 12.30 and it was only when we left around 1.00 pm that they were then serving peas and carrots. This was a family meal books for a special occasion and we left as soon as we good because the day had been ruined as far as we were concerned. I would like to think that this was just an off day, but we will not be going back to find out. It was really bad food and really bad value.

Lovely little restaurant attached to this hotel. They have a new chef and whilst staying recently in the area for a few days with friends, we ate here on 2 occasions and were impressed both times. The quality of both food and service is very good and we couldn't understand why the restaurant was not busier. Lovely fish pie, steak is superb as it the beer battered haddock. Great deals on wine too - buy two glasses and have the rest of the bottle free. Very friendly staff. A great gem of a restaurant all in all.

The food is good, well cooked, good sized portions and very well priced. However, the service was very slow. This is the second time I've eaten there this year and on both occasions it's been slow. To be fair both times were very quiet and perhaps they staff up for the busy times rather than the slacker. The beer (Harvey's) was pretty average. I will go there again as overall it represents very good value for money

We stayed here for 2 nights over the bank holiday early in May. We had a large room at the front of the hotel which was beautifully decorated, a comfortable bed, bedding & pillows along with a very good shower. It was a hot weekend so we wanted the windows open but had to close them due to the traffic noise. The majority of the rooms are at the rear of the hotel & these would avoid the noise. Our first breakfast on the Saturday was tremendous. My partner had really good quality sausages, several rashers of bacon & quality beans. I had the vegetarian breakfast which was very good but they didn’t have any veggie sausages. Not at all greasy, it was very good, along with a selection of cereals and nice bread for toasting & a decent toaster. Our breakfast on the Sunday seemed to be much smaller portions, my partner had to request more bacon & sausage. Again, there were no veggie sausages. Good fresh coffee on both days but the tea was absolutely terrible. Friendly staff and an efficient receptionist for check in & out. Local taxi service was very good costing around £7 to East Grinstead, but there is a bus stop directly outside the hotel. Apart from the traffic noise the only other fault was the smell of cooking that lingered throughout the bar & restaurant. Maybe they need to upgrade their extractor fans.I would stay here again as it was good value.

My husband and I made an unplanned stop at this resturant early saturday evening and were very pleased we did. The food was excelent and resonable priced, and the staff were very friendly and helpful, the waiter even lent us his phone to look up cinema listings! My husband said the house red was very good too. I think we were luck it was so early and were able to get a table as it was fully booked later on and I can see why. Highly recomend!

Popped into the Black Peter as we were in the area, I wasn't sure what to expect as the huge sign outside was advertising carveries for £10.The restaurant was apart of the Hotel but in a separate area, on arriving the restaurant was only a quarter full, which didn't help the atmosphere after having been shown to our table the menu was limited to the roasts with a few starters and puddings. The carvery was set up as normal but i would have to stay the food was very good and plentiful, the chef did say the meat was local and organic but that wasn't advertised so they have missed a trick. The Service was a little patchy but more than adequate, two main meals for £20 can't be bad especially when the quality was good.

We popped into The Bram for a quick dinner the other evening. There was a good choice, all of which were freshly prepared. My husband had the steak and ale pie which was huge, some fellow diners congratulated him on his choice, he said it was delicious. I chose the calves liver bacon and mash, one of my favourites, it too was beautifully cooked, plentiful and delicious. We were too full to have a sweet although there was a good selection, we finished with a very enjoyable coffee. It didn't cost a fortune and we were well satisfied. It would have been better had there been more diners in the restaurant to make a bit of atmosphere and it was a bit chilly, however the staff were attentive, it was clean, our fellow diners good company so all in all I'd recommend you try The Brambletye in Forest Row for yourselves.

24 of us had an excellent dinner on Sunday evening. Good menu selection, great food, well presented and the vegetables crisp and cooked to perfection. The white chocolate parfait was to die for. The service was very good and our whole group had a good time.

Our friends recommended we stopped for Sunday lunch here. When we arrived the restaurant was packed, so the staff set us up a table in the Hotel function room. This was really helpful as they were very busy. The lunch time carvery was excellent, with a good choice of meats and fresh vegetables. We will certainly visit again

Every thing was delicious, but the roast potatos and gravy really stood out (a very important part of a roast lunch for me!) Didn't have starters but puds were good.Had small children with us and staff were great with them. Will be back to try the restaurant menu.as it looked good and we were told that it is all prepared fresh in there kitchen. Only small point is that it would have been nice if the fire was lit. Noticed a few families with grandchildren, I guess the hotel restaurant atmosphere makes it different from the usual pub lunch. Lots of cute shops in Forest Row.

The Restaurant food is always delicious and cooked to high standard. The staff are polite and very helpful! I am a regular customer to the bar (especially enjoy the music nights) and the restaurant and can only recommend this venue. The Sunday lunch carvery is my favourite. Great selection of well prepared locally sourced meat with heaps of vegies always goes down well! I'll be back for more!

I stopped at the Brambletye restaurant on my way to Uckfield with a colleague from work. The menu had a good selection and as a French man I went for The "Moules Marinieres" to start with followed by the lamb shank slow braised in Madeira wine and rosemary sauce with root vegetables. The Mussels were very tasty and the lamb shank was fantastic and very soft!! My colleague went for the scallops and the Brambletye Cheeseburger. The staff were friendly and we really enjoyed our meal. I will come back next time to try the scallops myself! Would definitely recommend this restaurant - Also good value for money.

Went for Sunday lunch today, our second time this month. Well what can I say... If you want Fab value for money, friendly staff and good old Sunday lunch carvery meal you'd be hard pushed to beat this place. Oh and the sweets were great too. The only thing I would say is unruly children constantly running around/ in and out, either the parents or management need to take control of this as it can spoil the meal for other diners? I understand it's difficult but children need to be given bounderies, perhaps the parents do too?

Suffering eight years under brewery ownership, the Brambletye's reputation had gone well and truly down the pan. Hearing that it was under new private ownership, and having had many great times at the Hotel pre-2002, I though it should be given a second chance. I meet regularly for business lunches at the wonderful Aldeia, and so one day (bored of their menu) thought we'd give the Bram a go. Well, we've now decided to switch allegiances to the Brambletye, until we get bored of their menu! We don't spend anywhere near as much, which is a bonus.

I have had several visits to the carvery on a Sunday with my children. I find the staff friendly and the food cooked well. There has always been a good selection of meats and vegetables. The bar stocks well kept Harveys beer including a fine pint of Old Ale at this time of year (January). Children are half price at £5 and when they are as old as mine they eat a significant amount. A good honest Sunday carvery.

Discovered this restaurant by accident. This is your typical pub setting, good beers on draught, good value wines. Tried the chefs menu and was really surprised. The scallops were a perfect stater and the duck breast an excellent main. Only downside was not enough space for dessert. Was looking forward to the Sussex pond pudding, a homemade dessert with a lemon cooked inside suet pastry, maybe next time! Well worth a try. The chef us quite a character and he takes the time to pop out and chat.

We were looking for a place to have coffee and cake after Michelham Priory house and garden visit. We discovered this lively and quirky tea garden. It was very busy with groups of families and friends. It was organised and provided a friendly service.

Being a bit of a Sunday roast connoisseur I’d heard good things about this pubs Sunday roasts! Booked it up (recommended) and had the three meat roast! Way too much for me BUT oh my god was it delicious. The meat was melt in mouth, Roasted potatoes just right, all homemade and with the biggest Yorkshire pudding I’ve had. The gravy stole the show, it was delicious and I’d love to know how they made it taste sooooo good! 10/10 (my first ever) I’ll be back for sure!

Dreadful menu and terrible service. Menu was limited to say the least and they didn’t have what I wanted. Had breakfast there this morning and couldn’t have poached eggs only fried, reason being ‘we only have 1 chef’ ……a chef who can’t poach eggs!!!!
