We ate here for a Sunday roast in the summer and couldn’t fault it, it was delicious! Came back today for a Sunday roast and it was highly disappointing. The roast potatoes were rock hard and when new ones were brought out, they were similar. They weren’t crispy or fluffy. The veg is minimal and the couple of slices of meat for the price is daylight robbery. Overall it was a bit tasteless and disappointing. Such a shame as it was so good last time but it seems the quality of food had gone down slightly. Even though we booked and paid a deposit online, they didn’t take the deposit off the bill automatically so we had to ask for this. It would be great if it was removed prior to handing us the bill. Unfortunately we won’t be returning.

The Barley Mow impressed us with its delicious offerings. The Malaysian curry was wonderfully aromatic and the fish and chips were crispy and fresh. The highlight was the apple and blackberry crumble—simply the best, with a perfect blend of flavors. A must-visit spot!

We haven’t eaten here for ages and thought we’d try it now it’s got new owners. We liked the revamped interior. Our pre-lunch drinks arrived quickly and we ordered our food, which did take just a bit longer to arrive but it was well worth the wait. Everything was so delicious and we all really enjoyed our food. Alan served us and was very helpful when we asked if we could move to a different table. This is definitely somewhere we’ll be going back to.

Had our first Sunday lunch at The Barley Mow last weekend - what a treat! The roast lamb was absolutely spot-on, and all the trimmings were fantastic, from the lovely homemade veg to the delicious purees and proper gravy. We're always delighted with their brilliant house wine selection. This was our third visit to the pub, and the friendly team never fails to make us feel welcome. The food, wine and service are consistently brilliant - we'll definitely be back for another Sunday roast soon.

Hmmm. Nice vibe, nice staff but very disappointing food. 4 Sunday roasts. Soggy Yorkshire’s, potatoes so hard that I struggled to cut with my knife. The loin of pork was very tough and the crackling didn’t crackle. As for the vegetarian option, it looked as if it had been dropped from a great height onto the plate. I dont like complaining but I do feel that customers have a right to a decently cooked meal if they are paying well for it. What is so difficult to get right about this very uncomplicated meal? Won’t be going again.

We had a great evening at The Barley Mow. Warm welcome from friendly staff. Delicious food and very generous portions! Lovely wine selection, of which we were given samples of three to choose from, which was a lovely touch! Would have scored higher if only they had a stronger choice of real ale on offer. All a bit samey and under 4%. Thanks for letting us stay over in our campervan. Can't wait to visit again!

Spectacular and tasty smoked salmon "sandwich" for a tenner, a huge lunch portion with fresh salad. 8 of us rocked up midday and the staff coped well with the orders. Silly Moo cider available as a bonus. Too chilly for outdoors but garden looks tremendous with stunning views south to the Downs. This place deserves to do well. A very successful relaunch!

A midweek night out, I have seen lots of posts for the Barley Mow so we decided to try it and we're not disappointed. We shared the scotch egg to start, followed by fish & chips for my partner and shepherds pie for me both had the asparagus. We shared the crumble for dessert. The food was delicious, nicely presented and great service. Love the decor, giving the pub a great atmosphere. Love the outside garden although we didn't sit in it this time.

What an amazing pub and restaurant. I had the pleasure of going back for a second time for food, and it was equally as amazing as the 1st time. Great, friendly service, value for money, and a menu to die for. And now they have a massive, covered area in the garden, it's an even better place to have a pint and spend your time. Fabulous place. We loved the atmosphere - it felt special-occasiony without being too grand, and the place was busy and buzzy, just right for a relaxed Sunday lunch. The food was great and the staff were brilliant - friendly and polite and really helpful, making sure we all had exactly what we wanted (no mean feat as several of us chose slightly off-piste combinations from the menu). The unasked for continual refills of our water carafe were typical of the attentive yet discreet service, and the cucumber in the water was an unusual but appreciated touch. 10 out of 10 on all fronts. Splendid cooking, rather than just reheating of bought in dishes which is often typical in pubs. New owner, your menu and food were delicious, but your staff were the jewel in your crown. Heartily recommend and can’t wait to come again.

We drive by the Barley Mow often and say we really must try that one day especially now it's under new management and so we finally did. No regrets at all and are planning a return trip with friends next month. We intended to only have a drink but ended up staying for food. The menu was great, not the usual pub grub, very original. The staff were friendly and just the right amount of attentive. Our choices were stuffed chicken breast with mushroom risotto and chicken thigh burger. Both excellent - the best pub meal we've had in a very long time.

The good: Food was great - (various roasts) and the portions were generous, but the cauliflower cheese was a bit strange - i.e. not much in the way of a cheese sauce. Still edible though! I would have liked to try the desserts, but had eaten my fill. The serving staff were friendly and helpful. The not so good: we arrived about 15 minutes before the booked time and were directed to sit on the church pew seats under a speaker that was playing too loud for conversation. The request to turn down the music to a conversational level seemed to fall on deaf ears :) Anyway, we were moved to a decent round table away from the dance music and all was well. (I know some people like loud music, and it has its place, but when you want a nice Sunday lunch with your family, you probably want to be able to talk to them and not shout over the music!) The drinks service was a bit slow – we could see our order sat on the bar for quite a while before it was brought over. That meant it coincided with the arrival of the food. We would have liked it to have been paced differently as we would have ordered another round! The cutlery was really small – more suitable for desserts or children (Am I being too picky?). The children’s play area was a quagmire, as was the path from the cycle path to the back door. We seem to be living in a temperate rainforest these days so a bit of paving for the path and more drainage in the play area would go down well. The site has a “difficult” layout – but it would be easier to traverse if there were no stools at the bar right in the corridor. This was a problem in the pub when under the old management. I’m sure you don’t need to have people sitting right there! Anyway, great to see the pub back in action after a long period of closure and we will definitely be visiting again.

Everything about this pub should have meant it was a 5* experience but it wasn’t quite there which was a shame. Decor/look and feel was lovely. Decorated relatively recently. It was a Friday night so lots of covers which gave a good buzz of atmosphere. We were with someone who has hearing aids though and they did find it quite hard to hear as it was quite noisy. Serving team were great, especially the young lad. Not rushed, everything done at a good pace. Attentive but not over bearing. Food - presented well and tasty but SO disappointed with the veggy options. It was the point that really let the whole place down from my PoV. Only 3 options on the mains (gnocchi, banana blossom and curry). Even less for starters with just a cauliflower dish.

What a pleasant surprise! After months of driving and cycling past The Barley Mow while it sat empty, we finally decided to give it a go for lunch now that it's reopened. And we are delighted that we did! The new owners have done a brilliant job of revitalising this classic pub. It still has that traditional charm, but with a fresh, modern twist that really works well. We popped in for lunch and a few drinks on a beautifully warm autumn day yesterday. We opted for the Bream and the Malaysian curry. Both dishes were absolutely delicious - proper homemade food with spot-on flavours. You can tell the kitchen takes pride in their cooking. The staff were lovely - attentive and friendly without being overbearing and you can tell they enjoy working there. We had a chat with Ben who told us all about the work that went into getting it this far and the plans they have for the future. We chose a table in the sun in the adults' outdoor area, which offers stunning views of the South Downs. It was the perfect setting for a relaxed meal. The outdoor spaces are really well thought out. There's a large family garden with plenty of colourful tables and a wooden play park for the little ones. If you're after a quieter atmosphere, the adults' garden is a real treat. It's got a slightly more upmarket feel, but still very comfortable. The are going to add covers and heaters for the cooler months too. They've gone the extra mile with additional features. Two outdoor bars mean you're never far from a refill, and there's a fancy outdoor kitchen complete with a hog roast and pizza oven. For a bit of atmosphere, there's even a garden DJ booth and a themed ice cream stand that I'm sure kids (and adults!) will love. One of the best things about The Barley Mow is its location. The new Polegate to Lewes cycle path runs just behind its garden, making it easily accessible by bike, foot, or even horse! It's fantastic for cyclists looking for a pit stop, walkers out for a ramble, or horse riders fancying a break. It's fantastic to see a local pub getting a new lease of life like this. Whether you're looking for a family-friendly spot, a peaceful pint with a view, or a refreshment stop during your countryside adventures, The Barley Mow has you covered. We'll definitely be returning - it might just become our new not so local, local! If you're in the area, I'd highly recommend popping in, whether by car, bike, foot, or horseback. The Barley Mow is a real gem, and we're so glad the new owners have injected new life into this classic British pub.

We were excited to visit the new look BM, checked menu before hand plus booked a table indoors. The decor is tasteful. Doggy friendly as we had 3 week behaved dogs with us. We were seated straight away & given menus. Drink order taken & delivered at a reasonable time, I had ordered a Gin & Tonic, no lime, lemon or cucumber ( my preference) so I had to ask for fruit, other drinks arrived as ordered one of our party is a non drinker was offered only 1 non Alco beer, surely more that 1 beer available if so wasn’t offered, most establishments have at least 3, we did ask & was told only 1??? We weren’t informed of any items not available when handed the menus, so all in all a good sign! So as we were asked for our orders, 3 of us wanted to try the Pork Chop, told it wasn’t available along with the scotch egg! This was 2.30pm today Saturday 14th September! No specials on offer so we had to look at the menu to choose some other main courses So the following was ordered Beef burger with added cheese, the burger had no tomato, or pickle…tarragon mayo ( so wrong for a burger), my partner had to scrape the tarragon mayo off, was smothered with it Shepherds pie was nice but for £16 a side of veg or greens could have been added ( so I ordered a side myself, which were ok) Fish & chips, tasted ok. Chicken risotto, good flavour but over cooked risotto & very small chicken breast for £20.50 Service was average too to say the least.. It’s a shame.. the venue is lovely food for the price doesn’t deliver! Yes it’s new owners but it’s more important than ever with the prices that are being charged you deliver on food! First impressions are important. I wish you all the best but I doubt we will be back!

So stopped by for some food as we saw it was under new management. The lady was welcoming and ordered food. Was a little concerned when half way through ordering a other staff member started chatting and didn't seem to have a clue I was half way through ordering. So ordered food but realised the Bavett (Flank Steak) come with nothing but tomatoes with sides at £5 each with a small discount if you order 3. Hmm... Service was quick enough but oh my the chef needs firing. The flank steak was swimming in garlic butter with a strong taste of tarragon. It was tough as hell and I ordered it medium so shouldn't be that tough. No steak knife either. The mushrooms were truly vile I mean really really badly seasoned and tiny overcooked swimming in grease/butter with some sad looking tomatoes and half a roasted garlic clove. The whole dish already was swimming in garlic butter why would I want to each half a roasted garlic bulb? The crushed potatoes looked like cat food and similarly tasted awful with a really nasty aftertaste. Terrible seasoning again. Weirdly dry as well. The kids burgers were OK. The chips were fine. The greens were basic at best but quite a lot of them. Overall the food was terrible. Badly cooked, prepared and seasoned. I still feel sick from all the grease and garlic now. I should have followed my gut instinct when I saw signage more suited to a soft play than a pub. Expensive awful food. I can't see how it will survive with food this bad.

We came when it opened and it was so welcoming and felt like being on holiday abroad with lovely surroundings. The meet and greet was a lovely special touch and the service was really good, with everyone running around, when it was really busy, making sure everyone was happy. Today not so welcoming. The staff made my daughter queue again when she couldn't remember the table number, after queuing 15 minutes How ridiculous, she could have come back or found some way of dealing with this, surely, after she had waited 15 minutes in the queue. I also had a 20 minute wait in the queue. The wait for the food was over an hour. It was a DELICIOUS roast though. Great kiddies play area. The 2 stars we gave the review was not that the food wasn't good but the service ruined things. No doubt they were under staffed today but the frazzled responses and comments the outside bar staff were making was highly unprofessional. It's not the customer's fault There was 1 functioning ladies toilet for such a busy place. We wondered if our first experience of this place was too good to last. It seems so. What a shame. The great food,.atmosphere and music could have made this a number 1 in our opinion. We wanted this to be a place we return to regularly but don't fancy coming back any time soon

So some 45 mins later still no food give it compromised of 2 roasts and a burger nothing special about the order given it’s a Sunday and most restaurants deal with roasts on this day eventually 1 hour after ordering get a plate of food which had clearly been sat under a heat lamp for a while it was ok and that’s all I’d say however I can consider is lucky another table complained as been waiting pver 1 ½ hours think all down to bad planning and organisation on management behalf would I come back well NO sorry

I am a fussy foodie and the roast dinner I had here last week was one of the best I've had in Sussex. The roast potatoes are excellent, that's all you need to know, good quality beef and a nice selection of veg. It was a really sunny day and the outside seating area of the pub has Ibiza vibes, chilled music with stylish decor

The food was delicious. We tried all the sandwiches and they were all yummy, including the plough man. But the wait for the food was a little long. We will definitely come back again.

What a great time we had with you. Your staff are incredible so friendly and helpful, we enjoyed the company of Emily and (I think) Tom, we felt so welcomed from the minute we entered the pub. The food was of an excellent standard and very generous portions. There was plenty of space in the pub but somehow it felt cosy, the decor was warm and inviting. Absolutely worth a stop on the A27! My only request would be a couple of disabled parking spaces as it’s quite a distance either way to the entrances. Other than that everything was amazing. Thanks so much, we’ll see you again. Came here today (15th Aug) as was driving through. I was really impressed by the service received - I had a lovely chat with the lady with the multi-coloured hair who sat me down and took my order. The food was so good - I had the "Bok" Burger - and I can't wait to come back soon with friends and family!

Newly open under new ownership. Great food, really friendly staff, local beers and good wine selection. Garden looked great although couldn’t enjoy it on a dreary August Thursday!

Really lovely pub. Beer garden/play area is great. Only downside is there is only 2 toilets, 1 either side of the bar. But 1 toilets baby change table is directly infront of the cubicle. If someone were to be changing their baby it would block the cubicle, meaning there is only 1 toilet available at that time. Also quite awkward and pressurised if you're the mum changing and the pub is busy. There is also no ramp. Had to put my pram in the car to feed my baby inside. Quite disappointing actually considering how child orientated the beer garden is. Also, not good if you're in a wheelchair or mobility scooter.

What an exciting place since the new owner took over this week! Great, quirky (in a really good way) decor, cool outside spaces and fantastic food with interesting twists to raise it well above the run of the mill pub fare. Will be returning for sure.

What a perfect spot for a family lunch out. Glorious, newly refurbished garden & play area - perfect for a sunny afternoon! Delicious food (the roasts are to die for), friendly staff, great service. Loved the chill out music playing in the garden - felt like we were on holiday in a lovely beach bar. And access to a really nice cycle/ walking route out the back of the pub - perfect for toddlers or kids on bikes. A fabulous find.

Had dinner here this evening as we were passing through; my partner had the chicken curry and I had the bream. Both absolutely delicious and brilliant sized portions for the pricing. Matthew, Emily and Georgia took great care of us - we will definitely be coming back!

Genuinely might be one of the worst paint jobs I've ever seen on a building. The entire pub is a huge grey block now: a Siberian internment camp is likely more warming and appealing. Really don't understand, genuinely repulsive!

Staff are always friendly, the beers good and they serve hearty portions. The beer garden is large and has a good play area for the kids. You can now turn up safely by bicycle Or eBike with the new cycle lane running beside the beer garden. This is a great place for a sunny afternoon burger and beer whilst the kids play.

The first time we went the roast vegetables were lovely and crispy. The last time they were overcooked. The staff on both occasions have been very polite and helpful. There is a great seating area and place for the kids to play. Great for Sunday roasts.

Nice friendly olde world pub. Just a shame they didn't do rolls or sandwiches on the menu on Saturdays.

This place has gone downhill. My Wife and I waited 45 minutes, after ordering, for the food to be served. It wasn't worth the wait. I took one bite of the Roast Potato that was leathery and hard inside and sent mine back. My Wife was starving and ate a coupla potatoes. The rest was a one inch piece of 'maple glazed' parsnips, 2 slivers of carrot, a pile of nondescript green stuff, overcooked, and the Chestnut and Mushroom Wellington with Vegan Cheese. A complete mess. I bought a sandwich from the Garage across the Road and pressed on. I will not be visiting again. The next table to us was complaining of Chicken that was cold in the middle. The Servers, whilst pleasant, had not a clue how to serve. Cutlery dumped on the table and no clue what they were doing.

We came a couple of weeks back and really enjoyed ourselves, my partner is vegan but was not an issue at all. Today the food was absolutely great, I had the Roast Beef that was cooked just right, so tender and succulent. Everything was super tasty. Can't wait for next time. Do be sure to book and pre order if possible, unsurprisingly with the roasts they offer, it does get busy. The staff are also what makes this pub. They have just the right amount of bubblyness, a friendly, approachable, happy, smiley crew. Thank you chef and team

DREADFUL SERVICE, INDIFFERENT EXPENSIVE FOOD, £150.00 FOR LUNCH FOR TWO (I had a Burger, my friend had the Lumb Shank) The barmaid/waitress was disagreeable, unwelcoming, and unfriendly. She charged us £15.20 for two glasses of rough house wine. The ambience was none existent; my friend and I were there from 12.10 until 2.40 only three other customers came in: a man for a swift half-pint & an elderly couple for a quick light bite.

We were looking forward to a nice family meal for a birthday celebration and booked the tasting menu. On arrival at 6.30pm the restaurant was very quiet but we assumed that was because we’d booked early due to childcare etc. There was a pianist playing and the ambience made us think we were in for a real treat. We ordered some drinks before the first course as we had preordered wine for when the food came. These drinks took over an hour to arrive and had to be chased several times despite there only being about 5 tables of people. When the food started to arrive, at each course we had to ask what we were being served. There is a sample tasting menu on the website but only for the meat option and not for anyone who is vegetarian. It also states as a sample menu not the actual menu. The waiters had no idea what they were serving us. On the first course I asked what I had expecting an explanation as you get as standard in all other fine dining tasting menus I’ve had and I was told “it’s beetroot” - ok I can see that but beetroot with what? On to the next course after another 45 min wait which was bone marrow for the meat eaters. Despite pre booking the vegetarian tasting menu I had to chase my food as everyone else had finished eating their course before mine arrived and had I not chased I’m not sure I would have got it. When it arrived I asked what it was and was told Gorgonzola. Again what does this come with? The next few courses were painfully slow and again the wait staff could not explain a single dish to anyone on the table. As the wine flowed and the food didn’t materialise those who were drinking were getting tipsy. By the pudding course, those with children had to leave and so didn’t get their pudding or coffee and petit fors course. When the creme brûlée finally arrived close to 11pm the blackberry sorbet on the online menu was missing off every plate and some plates had shortbread biscuits on but others didn’t so we had to ask yet again for those who had been missed. When we were offered the coffee at 11pm no one wanted it as we were tired and getting irritated. The restaurant was entirely empty at this point and the staff were setting up for breakfast the next day around us while we waited for the dinner that would never end (and not in a good way.) One of our party did complain to management but I’m not sure what was said. For a highly rated restaurant the experience was sorely lacking. The wait staff need proper training in how to present a tasting menu not just slap down a plate and walk away. The kitchen was painfully slow for a restaurant that was mostly empty and no where near capacity- it was absolutely not worth the price slapped on it.

Nice old pub with friendly staff and good food, shame they don't have much choice of alcohol free ADULT drinks, just one lager type beer. Considering there's a push nationally to reduce dinking alcohol and with many customers drive to a country pub it's amazing that this (and many other pubs) haven't caught on to the massive range of alcohol free and low alcohol beers, wines and spirit like drinks available. Perhaps stocking a wider range of low alcohol IPAs, Guinness Zero, Gordons and Tanqueray 0.0% Gin also sparkling Prosecco type wines. The designated driver will thank you.
