The food and the over all feel of the place is amazing. The staff so helpful, chatty with customers. I would come again.

3micro campers had a wonderful evening, friendly staff, good service, good food. The Adult garden had a nice ambiance Mediterranean feel to it. The soft lighting,gentle background music,sheepskin and blankets meant we could eat our meal outside on this late summer evening. We had a good nights sleep, see you again 👍

The food was delicious. We tried all the sandwiches and they were all yummy, including the plough man. But the wait for the food was a little long. We will definitely come back again.

What a great time we had with you. Your staff are incredible so friendly and helpful, we enjoyed the company of Emily and (I think) Tom, we felt so welcomed from the minute we entered the pub. The food was of an excellent standard and very generous portions. There was plenty of space in the pub but somehow it felt cosy, the decor was warm and inviting. Absolutely worth a stop on the A27! My only request would be a couple of disabled parking spaces as it’s quite a distance either way to the entrances. Other than that everything was amazing. Thanks so much, we’ll see you again. Had a lovely meal here in the garden, there’s plenty of outdoor seating. The staff were lovely and helpful, food was great and the ice-creams were something to behold!

Newly open under new ownership. Great food, really friendly staff, local beers and good wine selection. Garden looked great although couldn’t enjoy it on a dreary August Thursday!

Came here today (15th Aug) as was driving through. I was really impressed by the service received - I had a lovely chat with the lady with the multi-coloured hair who sat me down and took my order. The food was so good - I had the "Bok" Burger - and I can't wait to come back soon with friends and family!

Sat in the outside adult area on a quiet ish Weds evening. Service was very good, food was extremely tasty and very well presented and the area was very pleasant and comfortable with a nice relaxed vibe.

Really lovely pub. Beer garden/play area is great. Only downside is there is only 2 toilets, 1 either side of the bar. But 1 toilets baby change table is directly infront of the cubicle. If someone were to be changing their baby it would block the cubicle, meaning there is only 1 toilet available at that time. Also quite awkward and pressurised if you're the mum changing and the pub is busy. There is also no ramp. Had to put my pram in the car to feed my baby inside. Quite disappointing actually considering how child orientated the beer garden is. Also, not good if you're in a wheelchair or mobility scooter.

What a perfect spot for a family lunch out. Glorious, newly refurbished garden & play area - perfect for a sunny afternoon! Delicious food (the roasts are to die for), friendly staff, great service. Loved the chill out music playing in the garden - felt like we were on holiday in a lovely beach bar. And access to a really nice cycle/ walking route out the back of the pub - perfect for toddlers or kids on bikes. A fabulous find.

What an exciting place since the new owner took over this week! Great, quirky (in a really good way) decor, cool outside spaces and fantastic food with interesting twists to raise it well above the run of the mill pub fare. Will be returning for sure.

Had dinner here this evening as we were passing through; my partner had the chicken curry and I had the bream. Both absolutely delicious and brilliant sized portions for the pricing. Matthew, Emily and Georgia took great care of us - we will definitely be coming back!

Genuinely might be one of the worst paint jobs I've ever seen on a building. The entire pub is a huge grey block now: a Siberian internment camp is likely more warming and appealing. Really don't understand, genuinely repulsive!

Staff are always friendly, the beers good and they serve hearty portions. The beer garden is large and has a good play area for the kids. You can now turn up safely by bicycle Or eBike with the new cycle lane running beside the beer garden. This is a great place for a sunny afternoon burger and beer whilst the kids play.

The first time we went the roast vegetables were lovely and crispy. The last time they were overcooked. The staff on both occasions have been very polite and helpful. There is a great seating area and place for the kids to play. Great for Sunday roasts.

Booked table, booking confirmed pub closed when we arrived. Not very impressed, shan’t be returning.

Nice friendly olde world pub. Just a shame they didn't do rolls or sandwiches on the menu on Saturdays.

Burger was delicious, cooked m, fish n chips heavily battered and a little greasy, veg soup average. Service and decor very nice and the 50%off food (weds only) much appreciated

No food available today but nice pub, excellent service and a lovely garden

This place has gone downhill. My Wife and I waited 45 minutes, after ordering, for the food to be served. It wasn't worth the wait. I took one bite of the Roast Potato that was leathery and hard inside and sent mine back. My Wife was starving and ate a coupla potatoes. The rest was a one inch piece of 'maple glazed' parsnips, 2 slivers of carrot, a pile of nondescript green stuff, overcooked, and the Chestnut and Mushroom Wellington with Vegan Cheese. A complete mess. I bought a sandwich from the Garage across the Road and pressed on. I will not be visiting again. The next table to us was complaining of Chicken that was cold in the middle. The Servers, whilst pleasant, had not a clue how to serve. Cutlery dumped on the table and no clue what they were doing.

Appalling service, waited over an hour for food only came when complained. Drinks had already taken 20minutes and only 4 of us. They weren’t remotely attentive no waiting staff around, no food coming out and didn’t take our drinks order for a while - other people complained. When I first arrived I asked if the vegan nachos was vegan mince or 3 bean. Told the latter, later when ordered told didn’t have it, so I said please double check as the chef had confirmed before they did and it was bean… then came back and they did have it. After waiting over an hour I had to go up and ask how long as my 86 year old grandmother was pretty hungry. When it came out my vegan nachos had cow cheese on it. I said to the waitress are you sure this is vegan and she confirmed it was. I tentatively took a bite and immediately knew from the texture and reaction I get from lactose it was… had to take it back. They replaced it with a new one but by then my party had eaten. Additional to this food was mediocre and table in front complained chicken was still pink table behind cancelled their order and left as they too had been waiting so long. What’s worse is google said they were quieter than usual and the staff certainly weren’t rushing about so just terrible staff, both serving, kitchen and I managerial. Never again!

I’m really surprised by the bad reviews on here. We stopped on the off chance of getting a table. We were welcomed by friendly staff and told that there was a wait for food which was fine. The food arrived sooner than expected, it was hot, plentiful and very tasty, especially the roast potatoes. Dessert was well presented and delicious. The staff were polite and attentive. We would go back if we were in that area again.

Stopped here on the way home from Portsmouth. We were welcomed with a warm ‘hello’. Had our puppy German Shepherd with us and he was made very welcome too. We ordered our food and the service was great. Food served quickly and was very tasty and satisfying. Will definitely return. Xx

Very poor customer service , The service was shocking , watched the team all round bar area chatting , Waited 30 mins before order was taken Food came out bland wasn’t worth money at all , tbh was very bad ,

Fabulous menu with great food. I recommend the ale pie in particular.

We driven past many times was always busy, but there is a for sale sign up, which they told us was sadly putting customers off. Hopefully the new owner will put in facilities for people with mobility problems. You don't realise until you need them they are missing. The staff all looked after us well.

Fantastic meals. All delicious and delivered to our table very quickly.

Food is tasty. We booked a table but when we arrived a table of 20 had just placed food orders (without booking) which meant that our food was really delayed. Only one person taking orders at one till so long queues and took ages to order. Staff very nice but system just doesn't seem to work.

Lovely size portions of food. Sadly the food came out luke warm which made it not quite as enjoyable as it could have been.

I was dreaming of a roast dinner and when it came out I thought the presentation looked good. However, on moving the large Yorkshire pudding I discovered two very small, dried up pieces of beef. As I started eating I also realised that the meal was cold. I hate to complain but at £17 a plate I felt I had no option (my husband’s meal was also just as bad but he was starving and really not one to raise an issue). I took the meal back inside and discretely advised the lady on the bar who said she would ask the kitchen to reheat it! I said that the meat was already so dry I feared it wouldn’t survive being reheated and she acknowledged this. A short while later the meal was returned to me apparently having been heated up but it was still stone cold, apart from one burning hot potato. I had been given an extra piece of meat which was less well done but still chewy. The whole meal was bland and by this point I was so disappointed. I didn’t feel there was any point saying anything else and as we were in the garden we had already paid and there was no further check backs or offer of reimbursement. The staff were all very friendly and helpful but I was left feeling completely disappointed, ripped off and hungry!

I phoned orders for mains on the 5th August for our party of sixteen. This was checked and double checked and on Tuesday added one more fish/chips. I had booked for 1.30pm but phoned them at 12pm and asked if we could arrive at 1pm as our visit to Charleston House was completed. They agreed that would be fine and when we arrived our community table was ready and perfect. Individuals bought their drinks at the bar and took their seats. The food started coming out and it all looked lovely. But unfortunately two meals were missing! These were two thirds down the list and definitely agreed on the 5th! The two had a long wait whilst their curry was prepared and were really pleased and enjoyed it . The Squid however was soft coating as though it had been standing and the skinny fries overcooked and mostly left.. The ham and mustard sandwich had the mustard put straight on it and was so strong was not enjoyed. It would have been better served separately. At no time did the staff come and ask if everyone was happy with their meal but were talking together! We were sat there long after everyone had finished and still no staff came to clear or ask if we would like dessert even though two had been pre-ordered! By this time the moment had passed and we decided to finish up. I was presented with a total bill although on the phone I was told everyone could be billed individually which when mentioned they agreed. I had given everyone a card with their menu choice and cost so it was easy to make individual payments. A tip was not left because the service did not deserve one. It was a shame that we felt the kitchen were let down by the front of house staff. Apart from the problems the Barley Mow has a lot to offer and the food was very good. Management just needs some tweaking of their serving staff.

8 Members of the family met for Sunday lunch recently as we had eaten here before. It appears that on this day hey had a group of 18 for Sunday Lunch at the same time. No apparent steps appear to have been taken to cover the xtra numbers that were eating, resulting in : Long delays, in ordering and delivery of food, ensuring that everything was in order, and clearing tables afterwards. Several times we had to go to the bar to get a waitress to take our orders. Not sure I would want to go here again after this experience.

Delicious meal and plenty of it (I had nachos with chilli etc). Particularly good cider. Love the pub garden. Shame they stopped serving drinks early, at 21:30, there were 18 in our group! Then again it was only Wednesday.

Had the nicest roast dinner I've had in a restaurant for years. The beef was cooked perfectly and the portions were good. The waitress/ barmaid made us feel very welcome and was really friendly. Will definitely be going back - loved it.

Great pub stopped here for lunch before heading into Eastbourne. Great menu with plenty of variety. Very quiet but it was just lunch time.

A quick pit stop! No atmosphere, stuffed foxes and other birds hanging on walls.. Very expensive food & it was horrendous! Greasy fat deep fried coley( not even cod or haddock as advised). It was dripping fat! Awful sloppy presentation & french fries overcooked fatty crispy. I felt quite ill afterwards.. Not a good vibe in atall. Was glad to get outta there! Never in this lifetime i would ever return. Cheap quality tasteless food! I cook better at home.

There wasn't a lot to choose from on the menu. The roast dinners were like kids size portions and we're not that great. A bit pricey at £17 each.

The garden is great, especially for families as there is a fairly big play area. The views from the garden are also stunning - if you're stopping off for a drink while going for a cycle or walk then it's probably fine, though I wouldn't bother coming for food - half of the table's order never materialised (not sure why as it was double checked with staff a few times). In the end half of us went hungry and after waiting 2 hours requested a refund. Such a shame as the location etc is great and has a lot of potential but the service was a shambles. Explains why the place was nowhere near as busy as you would expect on a beautiful day. The food that did arrive was alright - standard pub food - though definitely not worth the hassle.

Large garden area could do with a bit of TLC went into the pub only to use the toilet and think that could do with some TLC as well. Staff very friendly. Food wasn’t great, bread selection dry to point of staleness, Camembert was tiny, calamari wasn’t great. Overview wouldn’t recommend - 3 stars for the super friendly staff.

Landlady was pleasant but they were struggling at the start of lunch service - for the prices the food was pretty average and the pub was filthy grim dead flies on the windowsills

Came here for a Birthday meal - Very rude lady on the bar. Forgot one member of our party’s food, totally ruined our evening. No offer of compensation, told it would take 30 minutes to make the meal when everyone else had their food. AVOID.

Lady serving us couldn't be bothered to be there. Felt as tho i was causing her hassle by asking for ice with kids j20's. Messed our order up and I went without food. Over priced rubbish. Avoid

Food was great but I hate the added Service Charge of 10% - feel sorry for the staff who must be missing out on cash tips.

Came here with a group of friends and had pre booked the food we wanted. The food started to come out an hour and a half after we’d arrived and when it did most of it was barely warm. The quality off the food needs a big improvement as well. It was all just a bit disappointing.

Chilli con carne was bland and not particularly hot. We were told that mash was not available with the sausages and seasonal veg, then it was available. The seasonal veg was frozen peas served with instant mash! There was also snail trails under our table. The 2 girls serving were very good but won't be returning anytime soon. 😐

Form the moment we walked in the service was brilliant, the food was outstanding and reasonably priced. And the kids enjoyed burning off all that delicious food in the beer garden.

We waited 3/4 of an hour for starter and then another half an hour for mains (even though they had been ordered at the beginning too.) Food was luke warm and tasteless. I have never complained before but the quality was so poor for the price . We read reviews before we went and they seemed good but looking at them now, realise that many were a year ago . I can only think that it's changed hands. The staff were very quick to give us a discount on the food. Bad experience all round and will definitely not be going back.

Fantastic meal on a cold, damp and windy March Saturday night. The staff were super throughout. They were accommodating for us and the food and drinks were lovely.

Very disappointing, haven’t eaten here for a while but won’t be returning. Service not great as they forgot to put our order in, staff just not observant at all. Roast extremely below par, tasteless and Luke warm. All in all the place is run down...

Great, picturesque country pub, with excellent service and tasty dishes. We stopped here after a trip to Drusilla’s for some lunch, and were warmly greeted by a charming young man, who saw us to our table and looked after us for our stay. The food was great, and the restaurant was very accommodating with our two kids. Would definitely recommend, if you’re passing or nearby!

Mash and sausage was not tasty. No one came around to ask if the food was okay until we had finished eating. Not sure if it's prejudice against black people. The family who were sat in front of us were asked if food was okay, not long after it was served. No one showed interest after our food was taken away. We were waiting fir the dessert menu but no one came so we went to the counter and paid and left. First time there and will also be the last

Best pub I've been to this year! Me and my partner came in with 2 young puppies. The staff were so welcoming giving them bowl of water and some treats. The food was delicious and very reasonably priced,good portion sizes and good choice of beers, a really nice atmosphere, we will definitely be back! Thank you!

Great place, great beer, great staff! Huge beer garden with seperate children's play area. Always come here for a swift half or two on our way to Eastbourne. Always a pleasure! See you next time....

Given this pubs proximity to Drusillas and the downs once every few years I give it another go. It’s a nice old pub with a good sized garden so great for families. Problem is if you choose to eat here you are paying a lot...

Food and service good very cosy

Went for lunch with a friend and had a wonderful time. Great setting, service and food. Carly was so friendly and accommodating, and our food, curried soup and risotto was of fine dining quality. I have high standards and I just can’t find fault. We were very impressed with the whole set up and left extremely happy and satisfied. I look forward to going back very soon!

Nice pub. Pleasant staff. Food unfortunately was not good at all. Risotto was very stodgy. Fish was so over cooked on the fish and chips ham was fatty. Waited ages to have plates cleared. So gave up and asked for bill. Went elsewhere for coffee and cake.

Lovely garden play area for kids and the rustic old English pub interior felt warm and cozy as did the welcome from the staff.. I even give the food top marks for taste presentation and price thanks guys

Great food, service a bit slow but worth it overall

The pork was dry and only two small slices , veg all tasted the same and the wife’s burger was raw in the middle , even our dog turned her nose up at it. Nice pub but food was terrible

Unfortunately, our visit today was marred by the quality of the food. Out of 7 meals, two of the roasts were quite “fatty” cold, and the vegetables were undercooked, having to go back to be reheated. Staff were generally OK, but not concerned about the...

Lovely garden and playground with an outside bar. The food was disappointing from such a lovely looking menu. Spicy chicken burger with no spice (or flavour) and unexplained cold beansprouts and a tasteless and dry, basic fish finger (goujon) sandwich. Food came quickly (too quickly?) and they do a nice Aparol spritz but wouldn’t bother coming back for a meal, sadly.

We have just left and I was pleased to go,no manager to speak to ,hairs in food we pre ordered as was asked then the girls brought out two starters out if 9 blaming an error on the system. Also we hadn't any cutlery ,meals came with out food items on the plate . The communication between indoor staff and outdoor staff is terrible . We had to lift all the tables by ourselves with no help from the staff. Some of the lady staff were so embarrassed I felt sorry for them. We are not returning EVER AGAIN

Visited today, The food was amazing and staff were great. They had a big Party out the back with people that were proving to be difficult but they dealt with them well! be recommending to friends. 5*🙌🙌
