Nice old pub with friendly staff and good food, shame they don't have much choice of alcohol free ADULT drinks, just one lager type beer. Considering there's a push nationally to reduce dinking alcohol and with many customers drive to a country pub it's amazing that this (and many other pubs) haven't caught on to the massive range of alcohol free and low alcohol beers, wines and spirit like drinks available. Perhaps stocking a wider range of low alcohol IPAs, Guinness Zero, Gordons and Tanqueray 0.0% Gin also sparkling Prosecco type wines. The designated driver will thank you.

Seeing as my review of this pub seems to have disappeared, I'll place it again. Staying in the area, this was the closest pub for us to go to, however sitting down you immediately got quite a horrible feeling, the table was sticky all over. It had obviously not been cleaned properly. The meal itself ok, nothing special but the beer was EXPENSIVE. We went back again another day for a second visit, expecting the tables to have been cleaned in the meantime, but no, still horrendously sticky. I'm not surprised we were the only ones eating there.. we sure wouldn't give it another try.. we value our health too much.

What a fabulous treasure of a pub. The garden with a view to die for over the lovely Sussex countryside. It has a lovely terraced area where we ate outside on a generous table. My vegan food was excellent. Empty plates all round. We had friendly and attentive service by the staff and landlord. Prices were pretty average for Sussex. On the Saturday night we went it was fairly empty which was surprising considering the quality of the experience. We loved it. Highly recommended.

Never have I visited a pub with such an unfriendly landlord My wife and I are 77 years of age and on sticks. Our car had broken down and we were attempting to contact RAC Rescue. We needed help but none was forthcoming from this unhelpful and not busy publican We settled with drinks in the pub garden but the wait for rescue which we finally achieved was to be long We were stressed, exhausted and very hot A waiter came into the garden and we asked if, in our circumstances, another round of drinks could be brought to us After consulting the landlord the assistant returned to decline us. Those people around us were equally horrified We had no drinks and left after I had had a strong altercation with the most unpleasant landlord, James Never again will I visit this local pub

It's lunchtime in January. No one has any money because of Christmas spending and the incoming tax bill and it's two days after 'Blue Monday', widely reckoned to be the most miserable day of the year for most. I had recovered from a cancer operation and my friend has been suffering a frozen shoulder for many long weeks so we decided to cheer ourselves up and meet for lunch midway between our respective homes. And what a treat it was. A friendly welcoming landlord and two blazing coal fires in both of the bars. I don't do dry January but having given up beer for a couple of months as my post Christmas diet regime had a cracking Hastings gin and tonic while my pal eased into a crisp pale ale. He doesn't have to worry about his waist like I do! We decided to go for a light lunch with some breaded brie for me and crispy fried chilli beef on a salad bed for my friend. We both enjoyed ours so much that we decided that maybe dietary requirements could and should be sacrificed and, after all, there was salad with it so we simply swopped orders and had what the other had had for seconds. We agreed that our choices were spot on! The wine selection is limited being pretty much red, white and rosé but the red we had was rich and tasty and, most of all, good value. On leaving, as sadly no coffee was available as the delivery was not due until the following day, we agreed that we had both found a new halfway house to enjoy each others' company and a great value, well cooked pub lunch to boot in a proper old pub, the way that they used to be when my friend and I were were young. We won't be that much older before we go back.

Traditional and cosy pub located in rural Cowbeech. For the quality of the food, it seemed a little overpriced but otherwise an enjoyable visit. Opted for breaded bree for starter and the (spicy) hunter's chicken burger for main. There is a free car park to the side of the pub for patrons.

A typical nice English village pub with a friendly reception. In England over from the Netherlands and staying in the area, we decide to eat dinner at the Merrie Harriers on our day of arrival. .. The first thing we noticed was, the table was very sticky, which indicated it wasn't cleaned very well, however we still stayed to eat. The Cod&Chips were ok, however the chips weren't really crispy. The 'wholetail' scampi were NOT wholetail.. they just a battered squares of what looked like a factory item out of a box (and definitely no tails). .. However we still decided to give the Merrie Harriers a second try the next day. We took a different table but that was also very sticky, so we decide then we'd not come back again. This time I tried the Pie of the Day .. however that was not really a good choice. It wasn't really a real pie, it was just a wedge out of bigger pie heated up. The problem there is, apart from the bit of outer crust, there wasn't much of a pie over .. it was more a homogenous piece of splodge. My wife's Seabass was OK but quite small. I'm afraid it looks like they try to charge the maximum price for the minimum of cost. We sure didn't think we got value for money at the Merrie Harriers. A shame, we'd hoped for better. .. However this feeling was the same at almost every pub we went to in England this trip. I'm afraid English pubs are not showing their better side any more. (the White Horse at Catsfield was an exception) .. Being back in England for the first time since before Covid, we were AMAZED at the increase in prices. The food & drink (everywhere) was 30-40% higher than 4 years earlier and at can't be justified by increases in the cost of material/power, which only make up a small percentage of the total cost. It looks like English pubs are now profiteering. We used to come to England every year for a week golfing, however we now think that will not continue. Other countries give a better value for money now than England.

Just had a great Sunday roast. From someone who isn’t a great fan of Sunday roasts this one was a really nice home cooked meal. Lovely pub. Not trying to be a party pub or a gastronomic destination it’s that warm, laid back, traditional English country pub that’s becoming hard to find. What I liked about the roast was the great variety of veg given on the plate. Roast potatoes that had a bit of crispness to them and a lovely gravy.

Well, well, well! What a wonderful weekday getaway that was….. The service was divine. The location exquisite. The room we stayed in was cozy and peaceful. We (my partner and I) were lucky to have Room number 7 which overlooked the Surrey Hills and was home to over a dozen peaceful lamas. This area truly is a village. What is extra special is the 400 year old pub is frequented by the locals so you get a favour of essence of the area. The beers are great and food is amazing. I have no faults to report about this place. We were lucky to stumble upon the pub quiz night which is a monthly event. The locals grabbed us to be a part of their team, we performed well. Overall this is a great pub, hotel and village. Special thanks to Martine who was just AMAZING. Can’t wait to visit again.

I would have put zero in the review if it had allowed me to. It was definitely the worst meal we have ever eaten out. It was like a very badly overcooked school dinner. The whole thing was smothered in gravy, the broccoli was well past its use by date and had been boiled to within an inch of its life. The cabbage, soaked in gravy was also boiled till barely recognisable. The Yorkshire was overcooked and inedible. The chicken, frankly, tasted off. The roast potatoes were hard as rocks and were not roasted just barely boiled with oil on outside. For 18 pounds a head it was very unpleasant to say the least. We ate only less than 50%. When we paid the bill which we should not have done, in fact we should have returned it when it was delivered to the table, the young lady asked if everything was OK, we said no, we asked her did she want to know why and we told her. She said she would tell the chef and there was nothing she could do. We will be ringing Wednesday to speak to the manager.

Recently we had a family meal for 30 at the Merrie Harriers. James and his his staff provided us with an amazing roast and either berry crumble or chocolate fudge brownie. They made sure a couple of dietary requirements were covered efficiently. The food all came out quickly, piping hot with masses of gravy (as requested) to an excelent standard and was much enjoyed. We had the use of the Garden Room which worked well. James was very easy to deal with, and very helpful, in making all the arrangements. We had previously had a Sunday Roast andvthe evening before our big event, my wife and I had an amazing sea-bass on a chorizo/potato base that was very tasty. When back in Sussex, we will definitely return. Thank you James

First time we were there as a foursome, for a Sunday lunch (Feb 27th) Brilliant roast, superb meat, beautiful veg, lovely home made Yorkshire. Very impressed as this was our first visit there to what used to be our local 40 years ago. Then Mum passed away so we wanted somewhere for a family meal the evening after the funeral. James, the landlord, was amenable and helpful from the word go and it turned into a roast and desert for 30 family (Friday 29th April). He gave us the garden room which was ideal. The food lived up to all our expectations; a tough audience as 2 of the relatives have run their own cookery schools! James and the staff were spot on with friendly service and the food all came out quickly, efficiently and piping hot. The evening before this big event My wife and I also ate in The Harriers. (Thurs 28th Apr) On that occasion we both had Seabass on a Chorizo base. Very tasty. For those who compare it to mass-market pubs, you stick with going to those, as the Merrie Harriers is definitely in a much higher league

We were based a couple of miles away so walked there through the most beautiful bluebell saturated woods in Sussex. On arrival we were greeted by the landlord who directed us outside for drinks whilst we awaited our booking for Sunday lunch. My wife and I both selected the roast pork which I have to say was perfectly cooked. The vegetables were just the right texture, the Yorkshire puddings home made and service was provided with a friendly smile.

My partner and I had a great evening in this warm and friendly pub. The food was fantastic- it appears the locals all know this already. The food all seemed to be cooked from scratch. It had a great friendly atmosphere too, logs fires included. Great staff, we'll definitely be back.

after visiting a couple of times a 2 maybe 3 years ago my family and I decided not to go again as it lacked in good food, atmosphere and all in all was not well kept but knowing there were new people there I decided to consider it and thank goodness I did. I looked online for a menu and there was one for March 2017 which is very rare that pubs have an up to date menu on their website and it looked great so my mum and I gave it a go. From the moment we walked in we were shocked to see it was both so warm and so clean for a place that used to be neither of those things (we once ate here shivering it was so cold). We ordered drinks then food which included a mackerel pate starter, a burger and a pie; all 3 meals were absolutely lovely and looking on here it seems to be down to a new chef! prices reasonable and great food, the service was also really good. 10/10 and will definitely be returning.

On a recent return to the Merrier Harriers to eat for the first time in a while we were most impressed by the food. We were chatting with the Landlord and commented about the food and he explained that they had recently employed a new chief and they were also pleased. The chef then later came out and introduced himself which we thought was a nice touch. Well done, we will definitely be back again real soon.

We visited the pub about once a month over a two year period as the cuisine was always consistently good and very reasonably priced.

This is a classic old country pub that ticks all the right boxes. The landlord and staff are very amenable. The real ale is acceptable. Its main failing is its food. It is far too expensive for the quality it is. It should limit its menu and up grade the quality. It is trying to be more upmarket than it is capable of, even if it lies in the middle of a wealthy area. By all means put two or three exotic items on the menu, but concentrate on being what you are, an upmarket quality pub with excellent basic pub food. You are not a restaurant.

The service is very slow. Urgency and speed required when serving coffee near a railway station

We ate here for a Sunday roast in the summer and couldn’t fault it, it was delicious! Came back today for a Sunday roast and it was highly disappointing. The roast potatoes were rock hard and when new ones were brought out, they were similar. They weren’t crispy or fluffy. The veg is minimal and the couple of slices of meat for the price is daylight robbery. Overall it was a bit tasteless and disappointing. Such a shame as it was so good last time but it seems the quality of food had gone down slightly. Even though we booked and paid a deposit online, they didn’t take the deposit off the bill automatically so we had to ask for this. It would be great if it was removed prior to handing us the bill. Unfortunately we won’t be returning.
