Two Magpies Bakery, Holt in North Norfolk

This is the third 2 magpies bakery cafe we have been too. Both Blakeney and Wells are brilliant. The one at Holt was poor , floor needed sweeping, we were told 3 times they were understaffed. The food selection was very poor, no scones at all. We had to wait to be served, 2 other couples near us waited for ages to be served. I went to pay and had to wait ages. This is not the normal standard we expected from the 2 magpies, will not go to the Holt cafe again. Will carry on with the other two

Dog hairs on the table so walked out. Complained and received a prompt reply to say they will remind staff about hygiene. However I had been the promised that this would happen the previous month after witnessing a staff member give a treat to a customer's dog and not wash their hands.

Not a great experience, grumpy staff and overpriced average coffee, never mind ..lots of other nice and welcoming places in Holt!

My wife and I had been here before and after a long drive from London entered and stood by the Wait Here To Be Seated sign It was a couple of minutes to 3pm and we were told that the kitchen was now closed. Imagine in this economic climate to turn custom away even though the place had quite a few customers seated so I am sure two more would not make any additional delay. Being a retired retailer I was very surprised especially as there was another couple before us in a similar situation Their loss and we shall never come here again We found another cafe nearby who were happy to serve us lunch even though they were also about to close.

My first visit to the bakery on a Saturday morning in Holt. The service wasn’t at its best. Told to visit the counter to choose cakes and when I enquired at the counter for gluten free options, I was pointed to a macaroon and the young lady just walked away and served someone else. I hadn’t finished asking my question. We were served at the table but my friends commented that their coffee was bitter. 3 cups of coffee (not large) and 3 cakes later £21.00. To pay you have to queue with counter customers not wishing to sit in. It wasn’t the best experience overall. Reading previous reviews, management comment on the positives only. The staff clearly are under pressure, inexperienced and not happy. Will not rush back.

I think at least one member of staff may need further training and support in the Holt branch. Staff seemed inexperienced and overwhelmed. The young woman who 'served' us told us off for queue jumping for taking a table she had earlier instructed us to take. She did not apologise when I stated that we had been waiting for someone to take our order for quite a while before the shop had filled up and the queue for tables began. She spoke to us so rudely other customers sitting close by commented to us in surprise at her rude behaviour. After this we were ignored. She took orders for other people seated after us and after this exchange. These customers were served before us. After a long wait another staff member came to take our order after another long wait our order was served. We spent about an hour in the cafe - 45 minutes of it waiting. When we paid the £16.25 (2 coffees, a sausage roll and small cake) I asked the rude waitress quite gently what the difficulty at the beginning was about. 'What difficulty?' she said. 'You were rude to us,' I replied. 'I don't think I was.' she said. I said I'd email her head office to complain. But seeing other complaints on this site about the attitude of staff in Holt to their customers I think it would be a waste of time. It's a pity as the staff in the Norwich branch are brilliant. My trip advice - go to Byfords. The service may be slow sometimes but the staff are smart, willing and competent.

First visit and will not return to sit in. Started with being told abruptly to wait near the sign which we were already doing. Then the same young lady asked me with a sigh how many people. She then showed us were to sit so I put my bags on the chairs and started to take my Granddaughter to the told. The same young lady then approached me and again spoke to me very abruptly telling me it was table serves so I told her we were just going to the toilet and she just huffed at us. Once she came to take our order I asked her what drinks they had suitable for my Granddaughter and I was told all the cartoons were in the fridge !! I asked her if she could possibly tell me what flavours which she wasn't happy about. Whilst sitting in the cafe I observed it was not just us that was treated / spoken to in that manner. Even my six year old Granddaughter commented to me that the lady wasn't very nice

We came to Two Magpies for breakfast 3 times during our 4 day stay! It was recommended to us by the hosts of the cottage we stayed in and it was easily our favourite breakfast and coffee spot. Service is very friendly and the food is DELICIOUS. I ordered the halloumi and avocado breakfast brioche every time we went and I will definitely miss it! They have a lovely selection of baked goods, the cinnamon swirl was our favourite but the sausage rolls are also excellent. Coffee was great too. It is also dog friendly which was great for us. Would highly recommend for either breakfast or a coffee and pastry!

Enjoyed our coffee and cakes/ pastries. The marmite swirl was enormous! Good choice of gluten free products but think they should cover them so don’t get touched by the other products. Seems to be busy and sometimes you have to wait for a table - but that’s usually a good sign!! Breakfast menu looked nice. Enjoyed our visit.

Food usually good but always slow service, this time there were only three other tables and no queue at the counter. We waited for far too long for children’s drinks, and only got our food when we offered to go and get it ourselves, then the adult’s drinks took so long and then waited on the counter so long, I went and got them and they were cold when they came. There were four members of staff and they were chatting, not getting the orders done and clearly winding down for the day (it was 3.30). We asked for water and they gave us carafes of salt water. When our children told us the water tasted funny we tasted it then took it away from them, extremely strong salt water. How did that into carafes for tables? I said to one of the very slow moving members of staff could we please have some fresh water, she did get us bottled water for the children but only after I insisted they needed to rinse their mouths now. We weren’t offered any discount from the bill, and only when we said my drink was cold did they remove only that from the bill.

We visited this café frequently while holidaying in Holt, it has a lovely atmosphere and is dog friendly. The coffee is lovely and food looks amazing . Very popular so you might need to wait a while for your order but when on holiday we were not in a rush so enjoyed it.

Two breakfast visits last week, both high quality food and excellent coffee, a critical feature for us. Polite, helpful service and calm, friendly atmosphere. Also shopped daily : real sourdough breads, sweet / savoury pastries. Quality consistent high since they opened. It's a highlight of our twice yearly self catering weeks in Holt.

Very nice coffee shop that is dog friendly. The coffee was fabulous - best we've had for a while. We also had a delicious cake - a sort of winter Bakewell - very tasty. Average price and good service.

The fake bakery that lured us into a very ordinary cafe! We had our doubts but only ordered what we thought was not too expensive! Didn't realise until afterwards that sausage rolls were £5 each and half cooked and no garnish or presentation skills to make a differenceI !We had small cans of fizzy drinks which were overly priced! A total insult to people who work hard for their money! Don't go in there!
