Family run Bangladeshi establishment. Have been twice in as many months both times with friends. The first time we were there for their Biryani Sunday, the second visit was a Thursday night for the Mega Mixed Thali. It’s a BYOB, you put whatever corkage you want to pay in the charity box for an educational foundation in Bangladesh - there were four of us so we donated for a fiver on each visit. The food. I rarely eat out in Brighton, so for me to visit a place twice in as many months tells you all you need to hear. Clean plates all round. The quantity and quality of the food is hard to beat and the value for money is amazing. The Mega Mixed Thali fed four human Labrador’s and we all groaned when none of us could manage the last savoury pastry, all for £50; total bargain. The biryani Sunday was £15 each and more food than we knew what to do with. Wear clothes that are too big for you so you have room to expand your waistline. They cook to order, so be prepared for a wait, this is not a fast food place. The chairs are comfortable and the tables a decent size. You are asked if you prefer mild, medium or spicy; obviously spicy is the only way to go but it is spicy, not blow your brains out chilli hot. It’s been there for decades, so the interior is dated and it has an old fashioned cafe feel to the place. If you don’t care too much about posh surroundings and like decent Bangladeshi grub at reasonable prices the this is the place for you.

I love this restaurant. It is family owned, super friendly, and the food is simply beautiful. Tuntun's specialises in authentic Bangladeshi and Indian food, all of which is cooked to perfection. You'd be very hard pressed to find a better indian in resteaurant in Brighton.

I don't go to this cafe as often as I should do. Every time I go I am massively surprised by the quality of the food and it's a very nice experience ...bring your own booze and put your corkage charge into the charity box. Can't stay away from this little gem of a place which looks like nothing from outside. Meals made in any combo and served on a big tray/thali, always with a few extra freebies. Chicken and lamb curries/biryanis, paratha, lassis all top-notch. Plenty of good veg options (though not my preference). Lovely ladies too!

Absolutely wonderful veggie thali this evening- a beautiful warm and lightly spiced split lentil Dahl with a crunch and zing of coriander stalk, a fantastic touch. A garlicky spinach and potato dish, again warmly and mildly spiced, like a warm blanket wrapped around you. True comfort. A whole bag of crunchy fried treats, including a paratha, mini samosas, delightfully large and crispy onion bhaji and a daal poori stuffed with tasty chickpeas. Needless to say, I didn’t finish or even start the rice! Thank you so much for this delicious food, I will of course be back to try more!

This place is a hidden gem! The food was excellent; really tasty and authentic. The thali were really good and definitely worth a try (the have a vegan, vegetarian and regular version). Overall the food was really cheap and portions were massive in comparison! Staff were friendly and approachable. Only thing to mention was that the restaurant asks you to bring your dishes back to the counter when you’re done (but I’m not sure anyone wipes the tables down in between… could just have been that our table was missed). Toilets are also a bit dated. Overall I would say this is an excellent place to try for a casual dinner / lunch / take away option that is really reasonably priced. (It’s very casual). Would definitely come back again.

Myself and my partner tried here after reading all the Tripadvisor reviews and we were not disappointed! This is authentic, home-cooked Bangladeshi food! Please do not expect to find Indian food here as Bangladeshi food is completely different and so much tastier! The lamb biryani is the best biryani I've had in a restaurant. It is delicious! Tuntun's truly deserves fame & praise for the outrageously delicious fish curry I had last night. It is a quiet (at least when we ate there at 8pm on a Saturday), informal place in which you order at the counter but the food was just incredible. People in and adjacent to Brighton, please come eat here!!! :D It deserves to be full, with queues out the door all day and night. We had Daal Puri to start, 4 hot delicious fried breads filled with a delicately spiced lentil mixture with a tangy & spicy dipping sauce. Arrived at our table very quickly. Before I could finish my second puri, our mains arrived (no complaints, more vehicles to mop up the sauce with!) The fish curry was delicate white fish in the most magical sauce: lots of fresh garlic & coriander, not oily or heavy and they are happy to adjust the heat for you. And crispy fried onions! I love chilli but didn't know how spicy I could handle at this authentic, home-cooking style place so asked for medium but that was mild for me, I could go warmer next time. But the sauce was *so* tasty I didn't mind one bit. I definitely would go back, in fact I cannot wait to go back & I also must try the Sunday Buffett. And you can even book a cookery lesson with them!

I've walked past Tun Tun's many times and have been wanting to try it out for a while. Today I finally managed to drop in for some lunch, and I now wish i had done it a lot sooner!Just finished what on the menu was unassumingly described as "veg curry and rice". When it arrived it turned out to be two different kinds of pekora, saag aloo, two different kinds of Daal, and seasoned rice. It was truly wonderful home cooked food: all freshly prepared and seasoned beautifully. As a child I was raised by an Indian child minded so I know how food from the region should taste! (Admittedly this is a Bengali restaurant.) I do not usually write reviews but feel compelled to after this meal as I enjoyed the food so much and the staff are very welcoming. What from the outside looks like an ordinary cafe, turns out to be one of the best restaurants in Brighton, in my opinion. It's also extremely good value. I'll definitely be back. Oh my god I love Tuntuns. Such tasty food. And for really good value. I don't live in Brighton any longer and really the only reason I go back is specifically for the food at this restaurant. The owners are wonderful too. Congratulations on opening a second shop and good luck! I will be down soon for more aloo tikka!

I went to Tun Tuns with my family, and Shamima brought us out multiple courses throughout the dinner, each one of which was amazing. I really enjoyed the snacks (Puri, Aloo Tikka, and Onion Bajhi), especially the Puri which I could've just gorged myself on. We also tried a daal, an incredible rice dish, aubergines, and a few other things which were all amazing! I recommend everyone to try this place out, the food is amazing, the owners are really sweet, and it's a nice space. Love it there!

My partner and I were taken to Tun Tun's this afternoon by a visiting friend who used to live here. We arrived after a long & calm walk in breezy sun and ordered, to share between us, the Bhel Puri (a huge plate of incredible popped rice, crushed samosa, coriander, tamarind sauce, and more!) and two portions of different snack bite things, similar to samosas but also totally different (you get 4 in a portion and they are mind bogglingly good!!!) The whole thing filled us beautifully and I can't even begin with regards to the flavours! To top it off, for dessert, we had some of these extraordinary sweet coconut-in-pastry parcels - I don't even like coconut and I was in heaven. Some spicy, some sweet, all really fresh tasting and not at all greasy. The sort of food that only gets better with every mouthful - cannot wait to go back and try some of the mains which looked even more amazing. The vibe in here is so good, beautiful brightly coloured walls and canteen style tables, we sat in soft light and chatted while eating for about an hour. For our light meal, the whole bill came to £10 between us (!!), plus the couple who own it are unbelievably sweet and friendly and told us they will be putting on a Bengali New Year celebration this tuesday, with 15 dishes (all you can eat, I think) for £10 per head! We will be coming back then and hopefully so much in the future, and probably to the new store the owner's have said they recently opened in the new market under the train station, as we live Hove ways. Can't recommend enough :)

Shahi Haleem - so tasty and subtly flavoured. And the owners are just beautiful people to meet - gracious, generous, welcoming. The decor and style are simple, cheap, but have a character of their own. Nice to find a place to have simple tasty food which doesn't break the bank, and with very personable service.

I visited this cafe alone with some trepidation as I thought it might be a wind-up. This Balgaldeshi cafe is situated just outside of the City Centre of the Lewes Road, North of The Level. I was the only customer upon entry at about 12.15pm on a Wednesday, so I thought the worse. The decor is basic, as are the loos. The menu on the table had seen better days, encapsulated in plastic, but oil had found its way in. Having studied the breakfast/lunch menu I opted for the fish curry but not with the rice, as I requested a chapati instead. The meal was obviously freshly cooked as it took a good 15 minutes to at arrive, during which time another customer arrived, a Bangladeshi gentleman. The fish was outstanding in a slightly thin but very tasty sauce with plenty of spice and green chillies as requested. The chapati was nothing like I am used to, but nevertheless probably nearer to Bangladeshi street food. A little flaky and oily but very tasty. My meal came with a coconut pastry dessert, not particularly to my liking, but which I ate. Upon leaving I purchased six take-away snacks to consume later. My bill was £8.00. This was an authentic Bangladeshi meal which I enjoyed. I will be back and I will recommend to others. Do not expect restaurant surroundings and facilities, but enjoy the food, it is good.

Went for lunch here. Onion bhagi's and samosas were very nice, but chicken wrap, although huge, was disappointing, due to the fact that it didn't have chicken. The meat was like a minced sausage of some sort and didn't taste so good. Cheap and cheerful but not rushing back.

A lovely family run place with great food, packed with flavour and at cheap prices :) They also run a stall all day at Sussex University on a Tuesday which is well worth a visit for takeaway food..

Enjoyed the vegetarian snacks immensely -- Bengali/ Bangladeshi versions of puri, kachori, samosa, even the north Indian gujia. Fabulous chai. Delighted to discover this place. Excellent value for money. Next time will sample the dishes. There's only so much you can eat! Friendly people who take pride in who they are -- not pretending to be anybody else.

Very reasonably priced and freshly made. Really sweet place and I cannot recommend it enough. I shall return. Thank you Shamima and family.

Actually it's not very hidden, but it is a treasure. The building looks like a cafe from the exterior, but don't let this put you off: the food is fabulous. We would definitely visit again.

Since my first visit to Tun Tuns, I've become a regular. I got the wonderful fish curry the first time I visited and was delighted by the food and service. I often go in and collect a variety of snacks to have for lunch at work and am always really happy with the food which is authentic, flavourful and fresh. Very well priced for such great food, I am always telling people about this place!

Such a friendly place with delicious home cooked, fresh tasting food from Bangladesh. So refreshing to find an "untrendy " place in trendy ole Brighton. I pop in here often as I live nearby. They will cater specially for parties and will provide a special menu. The food can be eaten in or taken home. I have just ordered a batch of various samosas for a family party.Well worth exploring.Must say that when they play Asian music it improves the atmosphere.

I used to live in Bangladesh so I know authentic bangladeshi food and this is it. So unbelievably delicious. The family that run it are wonderful and are extremely flexible if you want to make a group booking. She made me a very student-budget friendly menu for my birthday with exactly what I asked for and let us take the huge amount of leftovers! Could not recommend enough. Go!

We went to Tun Tuns at the start of the new year. It was the first time we had tried Bangladeshi food and it was great, we sampled some of the veggie starters and mains and finished everything!! The family that run it are lovely and very welcoming, the atmosphere is homely and it is clear that are very hard-working. Would definitely recommend for something different and delicious! :) My only regret was forgetting to try their authentic chai tea!

I've returned to this homey cafe again and again, not only for the delicious cooking but also the spectacular price. The friendly family who own and run the business is a bonus to the experience. Shamima is a talented and hardworking cook who greets every one with a warm smile. She recently hosted a Bengali New Year banquet at a steal of a rate! I would highly recommend Tuntun's to everyone. It's lucky that she is soon offering cookery courses. Watch this space!

Saw this one on TripAdvisor and as it's in my back yard went for lunch yesterday. I've had some Bangladeshi food before but nothing like this. It was simply delicious. A young couple running the place, she cooking and he looking after the front of house. One could not possibly get a more polite, friendly and welcoming pair if you tried. The atmosphere was so good it hit you as you walked in the door. The names are strange on the menu but explanations are readily forthcoming, you only have to ask. Spice levels are to your request from almost nothing to "you just don't wanna know" I have no idea what mine was called as my tongue isn't that articulate but it was some sort of potato and meat curry with a new, to me, flat bread. One of the best curries I've ever had. My wife had a fish curry but she admitted a little too mild so next time, and there will be a next time for sure, she'll have a tad more spice. If you are more knowledgeable than me and know of some Bangladeshi dishes give the chef notice and she will do them to order for you. Non-alcoholic which I'm not sure if it's because of not yet having a licence or because of religious reason but that was no problem as a large range of soft drinks were available with lovely coffee and tea. A real gem for lunch and I can see us becoming firm regulars

My first visit to this unassuming looking restaurant left me keen to return to sample other delicacies. The delicious food, complemented by friendly, helpful service and relaxed atmosphere is unsurpassed by any other restaurant in Brighton offering nay cuisine, not just South Asian. The 'singara' are deliciously wholesome and spicy and all the vegetarian dishes were made with the freshest, tastiest ingredients.

Upon walking in, the waitress was incredibly kind and served us so nicely. When the food was ready, there wasn’t any napkins or knifes and forks as we were getting a takeout. We then asked the other waitress if we could please get napkins and knifes and forks. By this point she was talking with her friends and had been from The time we walked in. She then gave us a cold look and seemed really annoyed that we asked her something while she was talking with her friends. She then replied and said ‘ we just got chopsticks ‘ . The food portions are incredibly small and the taste was quite bland. For a restaurant it seemed a little weird that they only had chopsticks as we don’t know How to eat with chopsticks and I’m sure not everyone does either so we struggled to eat our food. Will not be going back.

Hey i got the duck Laksa, it had these gorgeous bits of tofu (I believe) the most heavenly thing i’ve ever eaten, can’t even describe it was sort of bubbles all through but saturated with soup like a sponge. Gorgeous soup and duck, good amount of vegetables i was worried there wouldn’t be enough i love vegetables. Lovely amoung of food i certainly wouldn’t want any less brilliant place only took them 5min to cook, will share my method of keeping it hot until it was home wrapped it top to toe in 3 separate plastic bags, then but it in a zippable freezer bag from lidl, wrapped in a blanket. The chopsticks are disposable wood in takeaways , i would recommend bringing chopsticks from home or a metal fork spoon delicious food!

We were the only people in the restaurant - table of 5 - and the staff were totally on the ball and happy to serve us , nice music playing and excellent food - we shared curries, poppadoms, different rice's, a cauliflower side, tuna ball starter and paratha. Highly recommend the devilled jackfruit and okra curry , also the garlic and lemon rice went so well with the spice. Cauliflower was delicious too - we were so full !
