The room was clean and the king sized bed very comfortable. We were in a separate house next to the hotel a very short walk over to the main hotel. We did find that when the guests in the room below ours ran a bath we could hear the water tank emptying and refilling and we didn't have hot water until it had heated up again. We ate in the hotel on the Saturday night and had a very enjoyable 3 course meal however, on the Sunday evening the menu had the same starters on offer but Sunday roast for mains this was reheated from lunchtime. I would suggest that this being the case ( I understand off season and to save resources) that if fresh Yorkshire puddings were served it would make the reheated lunch more palatable. The breakfast was good with a selection of yogurt, fruit, muesli, juices followed by a cooked breakfast using quality ingredients. Fresh coffee and a selection of teas.

On arrival at Trehellas, the welcome from the young receptionist was nonexistent. The public areas of the hotel look very tired as was our bedroom which was basic and clean but the bathroom was outdated and the shower tiles need to be grouted. The outside pool was covered with what looked like a brown algae or some sort of growth and was closed when I asked why the receptionist told me that it was closed for the winter. There was no atmosphere in the restaurant but the food was amazing. Breakfast was great and the girl who served us was very helpful. In the morning the owner was there when we settled our bill but didn’t even ask if we had a nice stay . Overall a very disappointing experience and we wouldn’t return.

The staff could not do enough for us and we really had a bespoke experience . The room was airy and very comfortable and the breakfast lovely. We came away very happy and STUFFED !

For a 3 star country house it was low spec . The bedroom was unexpectedly across from main house and we got wet and cold walking across . The stones on the steps down to the bedroom were a bit dangerous. The room needed a better clean and we found bits and a black berry of some kind The en-suite Back of vanity units were yucky.. Cracks all round bathroom floor looked horrible. Shower curtain was not nice and hung over the floor. Toilet seat didn’t fit very well and was too far back . Small piece of soap and 2 sachets of shampoo were free. The white wall made bathroom feel cold Unfortunately No cold water , which we reported , but when it came back on at 3 am ish the tap was open and we couldn’t turn it off , it trickled all night until 6 when it was faster and when we pulled chain at 6:30 it gushed. So had to get help and couldn’t go back to sleep then. It was an awful night. At 7:17 we couldn’t make shower work , the waitress told us it was a new shower (probably 10 years ago) so not sure what the problem could be . We had to wait for chef to look and we had to ring at 7:30 as we needed to get ready. ‘The Friday breakfast waitress’ came at 7:50 ish to say there was no water . So obviously we had to wash . The slats under the bed were off and so it sunk down , we had to lift heavy mattress and couldn’t fix them in place . Though mattress was far too soft and hard to get out of it and It had thick cobwebs under bed . So going for breakfast we didn’t see cereal table as another guest didn’t. It’s the kind of thing a waitress should point out . We didn’t feel comfortable with the waitress as she didn’t check we were ok after a horrible start to the morning and we felt bad asking for more hot toast as we wanted it with our cooked breakfast and got it early . She could have as she did with others make small talk to make us feel better . When we said to guy on way out he made us feel like it was our fault we had opened up the tap too far and couldn’t turn it off . The cooked breakfast was nice and chef kind . Though The evening meal the chips not nice and so small . The broccoli could have been on side of lamb not in mash . As it lost its crunchyness. The tv needs a new coax lead as it was only use on standard few stations and no HD and lots of pixilation and a smart tv that didn’t work at all It needed a small chair to sit on in place of the stool

I called today and the call was answered in a mumbled and rushed manner, I didn't even catch what they said. I said, I am wondering if one of your bedrooms is available on the 18th August. The man said " What bedroom ?" again gruffly. I said the "Courtroom suite.". Rather than saying , "hold on madam while i check that for you", I was met with silence and ruffling, presumably while the diary was checked. He comes back on and says " no its sold then". So rather than saying something like "I am sorry it is taken that evening however we do have some other options I would be happy to inform you about" , instead the conversation was evidently over. So, I paused, again expecting some kind of alternative and was met with silence. So I said " ok, thank you, goodbye". As I couldn't believe how terrible that encounter had been, I decided to call back, to ask to speak to the manager in the hopes he could give, this clearly junior employee some constructive criticism. I called back, the same man answered, I asked to speak to the manager and he said, I am the manager/Owner. At this point I was almost dumbstruck. I explained I had just called, he said yes, and I went on to say I was shocked how rude and unhelpful he had been and that he did not bother to offer alternatives. His reply was " You asked for the Courtroom suite, It was taken, I took it that was the room you were after and wanted nothing else".....and then the complete unbelievable insult to his own livelihood he said " And I'm sorry but Im in the middle of DINNER". I was again dumbstuck, what can I say to that. I really wanted to stay here but felt like I just wasn't wanted. Enjoy your dinner Mr Owner :).. Stay here and be unappreciated if you wish!

Whilst I recognise there will be a variety of takes on this classic seafood dish, the fundamentals are all the same, Saffron, fish & shellfish from the sea, a good flavoured broth, crusty bread and an aoli/rouille. I personally like a julienne of carrot, fennel leek and celery through my broth too. I also like a toasted sourdough rubbed with raw garlic on the side. I was very excited to read the description of how they made their version, boiling shells and adding tomatoes and herbs and seafood meat. In reality the dish that was served to me was a very thick tinned tomato sauce with bits of fish and defrosted king prawns. 2 pieces of a par baked bread baton and a bit of butter. The starter was supposed to have been a ragout, but was simply shredded confit duck. My wife ordered battered fish with a portion of chips, both were dull, dark and grey and heavily tasting of old frying oil. We had cheese and ice cream for afters both of which were made off site which was a relief. The wine - there is no Camel Valley list that is advertised online, not even 1 bottle!!! I can’t remember the red we tried to order but they had none, and, the list of reds on offer is not what’s advertised online. I’m more than happy to write and share recipes with the chefs at Trehellas House or even to advise on online recipes as what the menu describes and what you get aren’t the same! I would post a picture but it’s of a half eaten dish and really does look like a tin of chopped tomatoes.

Good value for money if you’re after something that is within easy reach of Padstow, Bodmin, St Austell , etc etc Lovely customer service from the lady that greeted us and showed us to our room. Quite a basic room but has everything you need. For a one nights stay, which is what we did. Didn’t get to use the shower but the bathroom was clean and fresh towels were provided. I would have liked a bigger tv, as the one we had was tiny and hard to see from the position of the bed. We also had a one tog duvet, and even though it’s summer, it did get quite cold in the night and a thin duvet wasn’t cutting it ! The bed was very comfy other than this. Our bedside lamps didn’t work which wasn’t a bother for us but could have been annoying for others. We could also hear the conversations and tv of the people downstairs, but luckily they had a similar sleep pattern to us and went quiet at a similar time. Otherwise this could have been an issue. Very thin walls. Breakfast was lovely , great selection of fruit, seeds, cereals, yoghurts, milk etc. The orange juice was topped up quickly and nothing was too much bother for the waitress. My partner had the full English, which was enjoyed , the potatoes were especially delicious! I had an omelette with cheese and tomato, which was basic but enjoyable and very filling. Lovely grounds , a swimming pool which was closed but I imagine you can ask if you want to swim ? Great selection of walks and excursions, and the staff have great knowledge of the area. Everyone was friendly and helpful

Our Sunday lunch today was tasty and would not hesitate to return. Service was efficient and we were served quickly. However, when researching online to choose a Sunday Lunch venue, we read the online sample menu and prices...which have changed vastly, so be warned. The website states 2 courses for £15..not the case. Each roast dinner cost £16 on its own. The roast pork, was delicious, but online it said it was served with stuffing. It wasn't, and that was disappointing. There was no roast lamb ( what a shame) and there was the addition of turkey to the menu...but that's a poor, tasteless substitute to my mind. The choice of starters & deserts were mainly Italian inspired and unexpected considering they were sitting alongside traditional roast dinners. Would have much preferred a more traditional menu. All in all, our mains were tasty and we would have been prepared to spend more if the other courses had been less fussy and used more Cornish fare, local apples, strawberries, gin/ cider, clotted cream.

Arrived ahead of time as had to accomplish a quick change from travel to wedding guest. Had phoned previously and young lady said they would try and get our room cleaned first, which they must have done and could get changed and off to the wedding. Room was nice and clean and nice soft bed, which was nicer than the last hotel and soft pillows for once. Wedding reception/breakfast was being held here as well so when we got back we all congregated in the conservatory and was all very organised and laid out. Meal we had was excellent (dont normally like lamb unless burnt but this was scrummy) and desserts just enough to end with. Although they dont have a bar, as such, we didnt seem to run out of wine or beer and a good night was had by all of us. Management was always helpful throughout for our stay although we left our two dogs in the car when not in the room with them and was allowed to bring them into the conservatory when all agree we could (which was the only stipulation from the manager which was fine with us) so they enjoyed it as well. Breakfast was as per hotel full english for me and adequate for the morning after the night before. Very nice setting and place to stay, would recommend to friends. The happy couple had a massive bedroom from what we heard, so great wedding venue.

We booked a 3 night Cornish Winter Break which includes bed, breakfast and 3 course evening meal plus half a bottle of wine per person. It is only available on their website. The hotel does not have a bar which means that there are no non-residents. Instead, guests can have a pre-dinner drink in one of the two sitting rooms and chat with other guests. This was something we particularly liked. The hotel is ideally located to explore the north coast including Padstow, Bodmin Moor, The Eden Project and National Trust. There is an outdoor swimming pool obviously only available in summer. All the staff were wonderful, Alistair the owner always available to chat and Mary's answer to any question was always 'yes'. The freshly cooked breakfast was excellent and everything on the evening menu is included in the deal although there is a £5 supplement for an 8oz fillet steak. The food was delicious. We would have given the score of 5 but the room was a little 'tired' with quite a small TV and poor signal but we didn't go to watch TV. Sadly, not being able to get a good signal on BBC radio was disappointing but the Wi-Fi was good so we could listen to the radio on our mini laptop. 'Tired' it may have been but everything worked and the large bed was extremely comfortable. Would we go back? Absolutely.

It was a bit take it or leave it - we would recommend leave it.

The room, we stayed in the 'Charlestown', was in the Lodge and was very comfortable and the on suite was enormous. We dined in the hotel restaurant and the food was out of this world. Beautifully cooked, well presented and hot, again the staff were brilliant. The breakfast was excellent with a good variety of choice. Would highly recommend this hotel to all our friends etc and will definitely be going back.

Obviously the hotel has a lot of history behind it dating back a long way so you should not expect a slick and modern building. However what has been created fits perfectly within the building quirky and quaint but most importantly welcoming! From the moment you enter the staff are friendly and helpful. The single room I stayed in was fine, bathroom a little cramped but a good shower. It was well presented and very clean and in keeping with the rest of the building. The bed was very comfortable!Breakfast was plentiful and freshly made, a great start for a long journey. The restaurant was excellent.Overall the stay was excellent and really good value supported by very good staff.

As expected another wonderful stay! This time we had the lovely Courtroom Suite at a special offer deal.Excellent king size bed, luxurious bed linen and towels.Warm, comfortable with every amenity, what more could you ask? As before all of the staff are welcoming and efficient and the wonderful breakfast served in the conservatory was excellent. The hotel is ideally situated for easy journeys to every part of Cornwall so whether you're staying on the way through or looking for a base to tour from I cannot recommend this hotel more highly. Sorry to leave tomorrow and looking forward to our next stay already!

This was our 2nd time at this hotel, and we were not disappointed. Rooms are nicely furnished, We went with friends, one of whom is slightly disabled and severely 'gluten free' in diet. We only had to mention this once upon arrival, and everything was catered for. The restaurant in the evening presents a fine setting for an unrushed meal, served by attentive, but not intrusive staff. Breakfasts were of a high quality, with freshly cooked fare, and we could eat as much as we liked. The owners, Alastair and Debra have created a welcoming establishment, and they have a good sense of humour. One of the most notable factors for us, though, was the quality of the staff they employ. We were greeted on arrival by Rachel who would not be out of place working in a top London hotel. Then there was Jade, Shannon and Imogen, all of whom were a great team. They could not do enough for us! We even had a chat with the Chefs. Of course, then there would have been the staff we did not meet, but who would have contributed to our stay, eg Housekeeping staff. A hotel is nothing more than a building, and it is those who run it that make a difference. We visit Cornwall every year to visit our old neighbours who moved there. For years we stayed at National Chain hotels in Bodmin, but if you are looking for that extra bit of service, then try Trehellas House. It is ideally situated for visiting Padstow, Port Issac and the North Cornwall coast. We were sad to leave, but will be there again next year.

The whole menu (that they had) was really good. The lack of certain ingredients for certain dishes was a disapointment but the quality of the food and the service soon conquered that.

Stayed for two nights, a Thursday and Friday. Our room was called Penncarrow, it had a double bed and also a single up a couple of steps which made it quite roomy and ideal for a family.Room was very clean and comfy. Shower was strong and always hot. Staff were great from word go. Ate in the restaurant the first evening, we had a starter each, main course, cheese and biscuits, a bottle of wine, 4 pints of lager and a liquor coffee, the bill was just under £100, not cheap but the quality was sufficient that we were happy to pay this.Breakfast was lovely and I ordered off the menu and this was no problem. Our room was at the front and we had our windows open at night, no problem with traffic noise, it was almost non existent.I read a review on here that was quite poor, saying the hotel was dark and smelt like an old peoples home, Thank goodness I realised this was one bad review out of so many good ones, of course it's going to be dark the walls are about 3ft thick which is due to its age! But everywhere is painted white and there are lovely paintings on the wall. There certainly was no smell either. Can highly recommend this hotel, its location was easy to find and you are ideally situated for both the north and south coasts. Will definitely stay here again if we get the opportunity.

We stayed a couple of nights here and took our dog. The owner was very helpful and friendly and it was good to be able to take the dog - there is fabulous walking straight from the hotel. The food was excellent in the evenings - all fresh and beautifully cooked and presented. Think it was a different chef for breakfast which was pretty average (Dont have the omelette it was like leather, but the other options were okay). The only down side was the room we had was close to the road and with no air con was stuffy or noisy with open windows. Otherwise the room was clean and well presented. Would definitely go back but would have a room away from the road. The half board for two nights is a really good deal.

We could not fault this 18th century grade II listed Courthouse hotel. The rooms were characterful, well appointed, comfortable and clean. The breakfast was first rate and the staff friendly and efficient. There was private car parking and gardens. We would have liked to stay longer, but were just passing through.

Our firsttime, our booking was taken by a very friendly, helpul receptionist , we arrived early, made to feel welcome by the owner, we were told all about the wonderful pool, gardens, resturants etc and then shown the room, Fowey, it was a small cottage room with en suite and large wardrobe, tea and coffee, fan, hairdryer, magazine on the local area, the room was triple glazed, near the road but this not bother us, the traffic goes in the evening and we had a very good night sleep, nice bed and mattress, bathroom was large and had shampoo etc there, good shower, not amazing but it did what a shower does and was fine, maybe needs a lttle diy around the base (picky) not much, the room was downstairs and the people above made no noise at all, really cant fault it, breakfast was in the main building and was served well, very professional, friendly, we had cerial, juice, coffee and the a huge choice of cooked food, all well presented and served, car park was huge, free wifi ( a must ) good TV and wifi reception as well, its in a grat spot, countryside, quite, very central , owbers were helpful and gave tips on places to see, we were quite sad to leave and will return, amazing place, we loved it all, cant wait to return, we didnt have dinner as we were out all day, but the food would great and may do this next time, nice to see a smaller family run hotel and have it run so well, I think next time we would choose an upstairs room at the back, but the Fowey was really good, comfy and home from home

This is the third time we have stayed at Trehellas House. Once again the staff were friendly and helpful, the breakfast well cooked with a wide selection and the room clean. For the first time we had a room in the old building which is separate from the main building. We actually preferred our room this time, the bathroom was huge and the bedroom very comfortable. My only negative comment is as with the other rooms, I feel the bathroom could be improved. The bathroom is huge and could be made into a real luxury room. That said, I would recommend this hotel as a place to stay.

In that slump in mood that comes after Christmas and New Year, this visit really lifted our spirits. The hotel and restaurant are in that band of independents who provide a genuine welcome without being over the top. In the restaurant, locally sourced food is the focus on a well balanced menu; it is prepared and presented well, and served in a restaurant that befits the age and style of the building yet has contemporary touches. Breakfast is served in the conservatory, catching the winter sunshine and with views of the gardens and surrounding hills. Again, the local sourcing of the food is a feature and could not be faulted. The room was compact and bijou, comfortable and warm. A little warning on the hotel website would be useful for those of us who are have to compete with low ceilings - although I think it is more a case that the ceilings are the right height and we are not.

This is the second time we have spent a night at Trehellas house. We drive to Wash away, have dinner and B+B then continue into deepest Cornwall refreshed and relaxed. The accomodation is OK, clean and comfortable. The dinner is superb, I particularly enjoyed a mushroom rissotto with smoked chicken as a first course. Gannochy Coke's homemade marmalade was good at breakfast time.

Having visited Trehellas some years ago after Christmas shopping in Truro, we decided to try this at the end of what was a fabulous family weekend away in Cornwall celebrating dad's 80th birthday. They did not disappoint. They were able to accommodate 13 of us at short notice in their lovely courtyard conservatory, where we had a fabulous Sunday lunch. Would highly recommend. A perfect ending to a perfect weekend, and we will most certainly be back to take advantage of their lovely overnight accommodation. As others have said, a hidden gem.

This might never have a visit from a Michelin inspector and it would be their misfortune to miss out staying here. Friendly, warm and great food, what more do you need? We have return several times along with most of the guests we talk to and the staff and owners never let us down. In fact it seems to get better on each visit. Then there is the evening meal!!!!! So out of place and character but the food is sublime and so unexpected for a little place, off the beaten track and great value for money -- well worth a visit.

We went here as part of a family celebration. There were 17 of us. Nothing seemed too much trouble and the food in the restaurant was to die for.For the 2 nights we were here we had an amazing 3 course meal each night with wine and we were not rushed at all. The hotel was close to Port Isaac (20 minutes drive) which led to a lovely walk after a yummy full breakfast. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone-very hospitable and comfortable.

We are so pleased we stayed at Trehellas House during our driving tour of the south west. Really friendly welcome by a staff member, excellent food, comfortable room and bed. The hotel owners were so friendly and welcoming. Up until the stay at Trehellas House we had lost faith in British Hotels having had really disappointing experiences in London and another hotel near Bath - but - it was like a breath of fresh air. I would recommend this hotel as a great place to stay for a night or a few days.

From booking over the phone until checking out the staff were fantastic. I have limited mobility and they sorted out the room that was easiest for me. We chose the special offer which was the 3 course evening meal with the accommodation and so pleased we did.Anything off the menu except filet steak but you could have it with a £5 supplement and 1/2 a bottle of wine each. My husband had venison and he said he had never had such a lovely dinner in the UK. I had some wonderful scallops as a starter and the trio of fish was the best fish I had had in a restaurant. We had a lovely room 'Lostwithiel' which had a massive bathroom with a bath and separate shower and the bed was 6ft.Loved the whole 2 nights we stayed there breakfast was freshly cooked and taken in the conservatory overlooking the garden. Would defy recommend. Thanks so much Trehallas

Firstly, I am local….. Secondly, I speak the truth… Thirdly, I am glad that the prices remain reasonable to the working class family man…… Although the decor might be a little bit tiring, the hospitality compensates…… On the last at least…. This place does amazing food…. Fantastic variety and the special board fluctuates…. I just don’t think that anybody that is down earth Can fully understand what it must be like to run a business. It’s like the same goes spread all your cards out and choose wisely. I have eaten all over the world up and down throughout the UK…. And I don’t remotely care what negativity comments I read on here about the coppice…. I salute every individual under the Employment of the establishment. Therefore, I totally recommend anyone to try this place. If you are too posh to wash and this place is not for you.. And if you do not suffer by piles Then clearly, you are the perfect backside …. And as Dell boy once said…. Bonjour …..

My elderly parents stayed overnight at this charming local inn. They were, from the start, treated with huge care and respect. Staff went above and beyond to cater for their needs which included swapping rooms to allow easier access, housing (and charging) a mobility scooter at some inconvenience and finally ensuring they left and returned safely from their social commitment. Their kindness was amazing. And the room itself was fresh, clean and well maintained with all the charm you would expect in this lovely building.
