The Red River Inn is a lively, welcoming establishment, in the midst of Storm Darragh it provided a warm comfortable haven from the storm. The landlord is very friendly and accommodating. The food is excellent (compliments to the chef). There is a wide range of ales and lagers, many of them local, as you would hope. Thank you for looking after us, the dogs enjoyed their treats. We hope to return before too long..

Had Sunday lunch 2 of the 3 weekends I was in Gwithian and was absolutely superb food. Generous portions, good value, good selection of beer and very friendly front of house staff. Definitely recommend if you are in the Hayle/Gwithian area. 10 mins walk away from Gwithian beach too. Perfect Sunday.

Having read some positive reviews my husband and I booked Sunday lunch and we are so glad we did! The staff are friendly and fun, the owner is very personable and you can see the Staff are happy working for him which reflects on the general feeling in the pub. We both had roasts as it was Sunday. Both the pork and beef meals were delicious and I have never seen such puffed up, lightweight Yorkshire puddings, homemade! The veg was very good with an interesting and tasty touch of spiced beans! The apple crumble and custard was also delicious. Can’t fault any of it. Highly recommend!

Booked a table for my husbands special birthday a good month before the date we wanted. About 2 weeks before the event I was rung to say my booking had to be cancelled as “they were cleaning the kitchens”. I then had a stressful time trying to find another venue (thank you Rockpool!!). The evening of the meal we heard music from the campsite we were stopping at which is close to The Red River. It appears they were having an end of season party NOT cleaning the kitchens!!! Don’t lie next time. Doesn’t do a lot for your reputation!

Do not go for a meal here - must of recently changed owners as the food now is awful. Clearly all frozen and reheated food. Avoid the burger at all costs had one bite and was disgusting. Presentation and filling of the burgers was also not great. Chicken burger was below average . Fish and chips were okay. Cheesy garlic bread was cold and not even melted. Service was also pretty poor but not surprising as it was busy at the bar. Overall extremely disappointing, they also make you pay beforehand which is lucky as we probably wouldn’t of payed!

Just been for a meal. Mine was not edible, tasted nasty, sent back full plate of food, tried one chip. All smelt like old cooking oil and tasted like it. Asked if I would like anything else ( at an extra cost to myself) didn't bother. My meal did not even come as described on the menu. My partner enjoyed his but has just thrown it all back up. Something not right with this place. Maybe kitchen needs a good clean. Partner is now in bed feeling ruff. Great! Customer service none existent, make no wonder pub empty and only us eating ......says it all really. Avoid this place at all costs. We have just paid £45 for me to have no food and my partner to throw his back up and now feel really ill. AVOID this place at all costs. Just to add a note, bad customer service. If you read the reviews the manager only responds to the good ones. P.S My partner is so ill........dirty kitchen

A couple times a year my family and I like to come here with my grandmother who lives in a home nearby. As a lady of 94 she is very particular and as she has dementia sometimes it can be hard to not feel judged because of her 'free' comments. However, the staff go out of their way to make sure we are happy and comfortable. The food and service are incredible and the fish and chips are the tastiest, most giant fish I've had! We recently dined for lunch on the 11th july for grans 94th birthday, the food was piping hot and served quickly and the kind staff helped her have a lovely day. We had the scampi starter and side portion of chips for gran- eith plenty of extra chips tp go around, 2 fish and chips and an amazing looking burger! Thank you for having a place so welcoming, allowing us to give a bit of normality to gran and our family. You wont be disappointed here, its a lovely place to relax and fill yourself with good food!

Very disappointing experience. We had booked a table, and when we arrived we were not approached by any staff, they just looked at us blankly, and we had to find our own table. The service was slow and we had to ask where our drinks were since we had been waiting for a while. We were told 'they should be on their way but don't know when they will arrive'! Then, the lime and sodas we ordered were not stirred, and the cider did not come with ice. The food was average, definitely not worth the money we paid, and when we asked for sauce we were given sauce packets just plonked onto the table instead of in a dish - I would not expect this if I'm paying £16 per meal!! Additionally, a member of staff embarrassed my mum, saying that she 'inhailed her food' very loudly so that other guests could hear. In reality, her food arrived quicker than anyone elses and was going cold, so of course she would finish before us. This is also a reflection of the slow service. Overall it was not worth what we paid.

We have three visit whilst we staying in Gwithian. We found the staff helpful, polite and very welcoming on every occasion we visited. We were advised to book a table if we wish to eat which we did for our last evening. I have to say the fish and chip I would highly recommend the batter was light and crisp when you cut into it the the fish, there were big white fish chunks, the chip were lovely and the peas had I hint of mint in them. The tartare sauce was one of the best I have every tasted. Panna Cotta: was light, rich and creamy.. the fresh strawberry and raspberries were refreshing elements to the dessert. Coffee to finish with one of the best we have tasted since being in Cornwall!

Well what can I say…. we rocked up at 4pm on a Sunday at the start of half term wondering if we could get a table for food. Despite being well booked, and only a couple of hours of service left we were asked how many of us there were. When we explained there were 11 of us…instead of just laughing or saying no, the team behind the bar asked the chef if we could be accommodated. On a positive response, they quickly prepared the tapas bar (an outbuilding off the beer garden) for us so we could all sit together. And then the food…. Was so good! Despite being so many of us, there was not an appreciable delay from ordering to being served and was fantastic! The Sunday roasts were fab… and the gravy to die for! Even the desserts were great. The service was with a constant smile and nothing was too much to ask for. We were so glad we made the trip out to the Red River and will happily return again. Many Thanks for being able to cater to us.

We've eaten here a couple of times recently and everything about the place is excellent. The front of house service is friendly and the restaurant/bar manager professional and helpful. Two weeks ago we had steak here, which has become an expensive 'treat' with current food prices. We were delighted with the quality, texture and flavours of the meal and it was worth every penny. Today we had the roast and I have to say it was the best pub roast we've ever tasted, once again everything was beautifully cooked and fresh tasting. The quality of ingredients and the care which is going into the preparation of the food is really obvious. At the moment, I can't think of better food to be had in the Hayle area.

To be honest we were in 2 minds about coming due to some of the reviews, but it seems most of the negative ones were about things that were out of the pubs hands.... Like being too busy or too hot in the summer! Luckily for us, it was nice and quiet when we came in yesterday for a Sunday roast. I really wanted it to be good, especially at £18 and I'm pleased to report it was not just good but excellent, huge kudos to the chef. A generous portion of tender beef, cooked perfectly for us, medium. A massive home made Yorkshire pudding, crispy fluffy roast potatoes and a great interesting selection of veg. Dog friendly, including treats for dogs and even a portion of cracking for them (ahem, me!). First time staying at the campsite across the road, loved the area and will definitely be back. Cheers

We stayed near to the pub. You need to book due to being busy. This was our second visit of the week. A very different from my last visit. What a shame as we waited quite a long time to be served our main course. Dessert was longer but did come eventually. We would have bought more drinks but couldn’t be bothered to be left waiting any longer. We could have just walked out without paying I really don’t think anyone would have noticed. The people next to us had to go and fetch someone to give them table service. Another table found out certain food had run out. I can only think it was due to being understaffed and poorly organised. I appreciate you can’t predict foot fall but most tables were pre booked as had reserve on most of them.

First time visiting for a year or so and the place has had some money spent on it - not quite as cosy as it used to be. The food prices are obviously set to pay for the refurb! Staff were unhelpful in as much as they didn’t know what the soup of the day was initially or if we could eat in the garden?! Long sweaty queue to order - only one person doing everything behind the bar. Food quality was good when it arrived. Will try again in the winter to see if there is any improvement.

I had seen a few negative reviews, but wanted to make up my own mind so had a meal here last night. My wife and I chose the superfood salad topped with chicken whilst my daughter had the fish and chips which she thought was excellent. To be honest the service was a little chaotic due to them being a member of staff down in the kitchen and front of house. However, Beth was an absolute star and tried so hard to please everyone which she did with a smile on her face. To be fair, the boss also put in a shift and worked hard. It would have been so easy for me to write a poor review but I feel that would be unfair in the circumstances. Well done Team Red River!

We have been to this pub a few times for drinks. We are local and sometimes pop in for a drink and cheesy chips… sad to see people being turned away tonight even though court yard was empty, there was around 4 couples in the 25 mins we were there being turned away. We were told they weren’t taking walk ins however they would do some chips and brownie… Perfect we thought, normally the cheesy chips are proper cheese and are perfectly adequate. Tonight the chips were topped with the pre grated cheese which goes gloupey… however that was fine … the brownie was a utter disgrace !!! Seriously !!! £7 for brownies bites ! The ones you buy from Asda from a packet! Absolutely rip off… it really has upset me as you don’t want people thinking that Cornish establishments rip patrons off ! Unfortunately we won’t be back it really has left a sour taste in my mouth. The young lady behind the bar was lovely but the man in the colourful waistcoat was really cross looking. What a shame we thought we had found a little gem

We received poor service from the waitress. We were initially seated at a table in direct sunlight. When I requested to move to an adjacent table, which was unoccupied, the waitress displayed a dismissive attitude, responding with a casual "yeah, I suppose so." Furthermore, we had to relocate all of our condiments and cutlery on our own. My wife specifically requested her Pepsi without ice, but it was served with ice regardless. The waitress claimed not to have heard the request and reluctantly offered to attempt removing the ice. Following that, my wife inquired whether she could have the fish of the day accompanied by a salad instead of potatoes and vegetables, (as she is on a strict diet). The waitress appeared shocked by the request and expressed her intention to consult with the kitchen. Upon her return, she confirmed that they could accommodate the request for a salad. However, what was served was a fish dish accompanied by a side salad and chips! I ordered the £14 burger, but what arrived was an extremely overcooked patty, sandwiched between a stale bun and, despite there being chips advertised as part of the meal, I received less chips than my wife, (who specifically requested no chips in favour of a salad!). After adhering to a strict diet for weeks and this being my first indulgence, it was a welcomed experience to savour a beef burger with bread. However, it was disheartening that the burger resembled a rubber ball and the bun had been served despite being stale. The entire meal, (including 3 ciders and 2 cokes), amounted to over £60! Considering the absence of starters, desserts, and with the numerous issues with the main course - this price, to me, seemed excessive. To make matters worse, throughout the evening, I endured continuous jostling and prodding from passing individuals due to our table's placement in the narrow bar area as I was seated on a stool with my back facing the main bar. Overall, I found the experience overpriced, for a below average meal with rubbish service in an overcrowded environment. I would not recommend anyone with £60+ to spare, to spend it here and I will not be returning. I fully appreciate that this pub gets most of it custom from holidaymakers staying locally and that this transient custom is their main source of income, but this is one local who will not be parting with £60+ again be it in their fertile busy period, or in their barren winter period, when reliance on us locals becomes more paramount. I would rate this establishment as 3 out of 10.

Booked for 7.30 and arrived at 7.20. After a wait at the bar the bar maid directed us to a table. Goodness, the table was a disaster zonew - nachos, cheese, chips, grease and heaven knows what else covered the table and the floor. A...

The food really is excellent and the range of desserts quite outstanding. The service was very good, and everyone friendly and helpful. Very popular and rightly so.
