We should have guessed when the place was completely empty. The last time we visited the food wasn’t very good , but I always give places a second chance. This pub is also very local to us and in the past has been very good , even visiting with friends. The brioche bun was that burnt it broke into pieces when I cut it , the chips are definitely frozen and not homemade and my husband ordered mash potatoes and received chips , we did tell the server and she brought out some mash, my husband had to use the mash to put inside his steak pie to soak up the watery contents. My food was terrible if I’m honest and I pretty much left it. Unfortunately I don’t think we will be visiting again. This used to be a very good pub for its food, but now looks like it’s turning into a drinking man’s pub, such a shame.

Visited the Tollemache on a whim, not having any real lunch target in mind. The staff greeting us were friendly, polite and helpful. The lunch was ordered and was delivered very quickly. The meals lived up to their menu descriptions and were hot and very tasty.

I returned to the Tollemache Arms for lunch to meet with friends It was excellent, delicious food set in a very relaxing atmosphere, supported by a delightful team who look after you. A real pleasure. it was also excellent value for money. If you have not tried the food ,you a missing out one one of the best pubs to eat at. Many thanks to all the ' Team' We received a very warm welcome from Annabelle, well looked after by Lewis at table. Martin the Chef who we did not get to meet cooked lovely food. My favourite is the cajun chicken with chips and salad. It was mouth watering. The portion size was excellent. Seriously if you have not tried the Tollemache, make sure you get a date in your diary. Thank you to Annabelle, Lewis, Martin and all the Team. I look forward to seeing you again

You cant choose the weather, but you can choose the Best Pub, restaurant in Cheshire! We visited twice in 2 days first with 2 tables for family and the next day a table of 4 in the shelter. Everyone was delighted with the food, drink and outstanding service and attention. It is sop easy to log your car in when you arrive, for no cost parking, with lots of parking space, I am sorry but you would have to be an idiot to get a parking fee as there are notices all around.Rugs were provided and we made great use of our days out after being denied for so long. We are coming back to eat indoors as soon as you re-open.Dave and his staff deserve all the credit and success for providing such a great dining experience. Well done to you all and I hope many others are attracted to your superb hostelry and you prosper!Richard & Mag Chapman

Hi,thought long and hard about posting this review but I don’t want any other people to experience this.we hadn’t seen our friends for some time due to Covid and when it was possible We booked a Sunday Lunch. We were asked how long we would be staying and as this was our first meet up for some time,we said it would definitely be longer than two hours, which we were told would be documented.we had a lovely lunch, the bill was just over £150.we paid that and then went outside for another drink as it was lovely weather.Afew weeks later both ourselves and our friends received a parking fine for £60 per couple.we didn’t u derstand why we had received these penalties.but it transpires that the car park is not owned by the pub and if you stay longer than two hours and the pub don’t document this to the owners of the car park you are fined.so, our £150+ meal actually cost us £270 .we complained but to no avail.BEWARE

The manager Dave and his team have a well rehearsed 'Formula' for ensuring anyone who visits has an enjoyable and safe visit. From clear instructions, safe distancing and a clean environment nothing seems too much trouble. The Tollemarche should be used as a 'Role model' in how to run a business in these difficult times! So, safety aside, the food, service and ambiance is second to none in the area. We had a most enjoyable 4 hours and we could not fault any part of the visit. Thanks so much for making my first jaunt into the outside world in 6 months so enjoyable.☆☆☆☆☆

Well just 6 days into reopening after lockdown and we chanced the pub on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Signed in, seated and happy. Drinks were nice, the food was good and all seemed rosy. BUT, there were signs saying customers MUST wear masks when not seated. People were queueing for the outside bar without masks, going to the indoor toilets without masks and even being allowed to enter the outside seating area to take their tables without masks. I asked a staff member why they were allowing that and was told that it was the pub's rule not the law and that the staff were unable to enforce it. To me rules are rules, these businesses need to grow a pair or they'll be moaning about being closed again pretty damn soon.

I don’t normally write reviews but today I felt I really had to. After a very wet and muddy dog walk myself and my hubby decided to call in at the Tollemache for a light bite. Whilst we were there we discovered that they offered takeaway meals (literally anything off the menu) we were planning on returning home to cook a Sunday roast for ourselves and our 3 children. Once we discovered this we made the decision to try the takeaway Sunday lunch and wow we were not disappointed. It is amazing and great value and the kids loved it too We will definitely be using this service in the future .... Thank u Tollemache x

We are local and visit the Tolly regularly, but not often to eat. Yesterday we booked a meal to celebrate our wedding anniversary and the team did a fabulous job as usual.Even in these difficult times they maintain a full menu and cook everything to perfection. My beef shin melted like butter, accompanied by delicately truffled mash and nice crunchy summer veg. My wife's Chicken and leak pie was equally well appreciated. Unfortunately the portions are so wholesome there was no room for pudding, so had to be happy to wash it down with a well kept pint of Dizzy Blond.Dave and his team have done an exceptional job to make it Covid safe but still able to feel comfortable. They've configured some areas to enable separate 'bubbles' to have tables close enough to talk but maintain a safe distance, and the staff are all attentive to both the needs of the customers and that everyone is following the rules.

We had lunch here last Friday. It was excellent. The two for £12 deal is fantastic value, but don't stop at the mains. Neither of us were going to leave without trying the raspberry sponge pudding which was surprisingly light. Just as well as the main courses were substantial. As I am in the shielding group, I am naturally quite anxious about being out, but heartily sick of being so restricted. The Tollemache goes above an beyond to ensure customer (& staff) safety. It's a barn of a place with more than well spaced tables & hand sanitiser everywhere. There's an excellent one way system in place. Table service staff are very aware of when customers need attention. We are local, & frankly, it's the only place we feel totally safe on a quiet night out. We have been there when customers had tried to enter without wearing masks. No chance! They also do a take out menu. Well done Dave, Tom and the team. x

Living with a person who has underlying conditions safety and feeling safe is the first priority for me when venturing out in these pandemic times. Second priority is achieving the highest level of satisfaction as can be had when venturing out into the perilous great outdoors. Both safety and satisfaction here were provided to the highest degree.Once sterilised up and details passed on we were escorted to a table where I ordered the minted lamb steak and my partner opted for the cajun chicken. Plus drinks, of course. Surveying the venue whilst enjoying my pint of Unicorn it was pleasing, and reassuring, to be very much in our own space. Notices also provided offered the reassurances which underline how safety conscious Robinsons are about their venues; temperature checks on staff before shifts, single use menus, regularly sanitised frequently touched surfaces etc. All of this without spoiling what is a grand building typical of what you would expect of a food pub out in the country. When the food was presented my first impression was how wonderful the colour was. A char on the glistening lamb, cajun chips fat and golden with the reddish dusting of cajun spices, and a little salad just to dress it up correctly. There's also a white sauce included but I'd declined this when ordering. My partner, possibly now wishing she'd gone with the lamb also, was nevertheless loving her own plate and so we set to eating. Both meals were wonderful. Usually unlucky in eateries I enjoyed my main immensely and so we then went on to order desserts. Lemon tart with a raspberry coulie and strawberry ice-cream was my choice and every bit as pleasing as my new level of expectation had anticipated. My partner had the chocolate brownie with vanilla ice-cream and chocolate sauce- gluten free. Anybody who has scoured the land searching for gluten free satisfaction will tell you that disappointment usually wins the day but not today. Her brownie was an absolute triumph.I paid, contacless, including a tip which underrepresented our delight and so I have come on here to tell the rest of the world just how fabulous the Tollemache Arms is.Thanks for a wonderful and safe experience!

I was hugely disappointed, when a member of staff advised us that the kitchen was closed when we arrived (later than planned due to traffic). We were further told that both of us were not allowed in or we couldn’t be served, despite our Sunday meal being booked weeks ago. This very much spoilt our trip back from North Wales after a 5-day holiday. Having passed the restaurant each day travelling to work in Chester and for several years, this was the first time I had stopped. After the very poor hospitality and service, we shall not be coming back and I would most certainly not recommend this restaurant to anybody. As the window stated ‘open until 9pm’, and we arrived at 8:15pm, I’ve reported this pub to Robinson’s Brewery HQ. It’s a shame this restaurant will not gain any future business from myself or my family - but we will never return.

Have previously visited before on one occasion and a had a cheap lunch deal which was ok for what we paid at the time but was nothing that set your world alight. That said the place does have a nice feel to it and the staff were very welcoming so we thought we would try it again. I ordered the turkey, ham and leek pie. The pastry was good but that's about as good as it got, it was swimming inside the pie dish, loaded with hard peas, really tough meat that was quite gristly in places, the chips were excellent so top marks there. My partner ordered salmon and sauted potatoes which was not good at all. The potatoes tasted like they had been boiled and not sauted, i tried the fish and it didn't taste fresh to me but putting that aside it had been covered with a balsamic vinegar/glaze and some kind of black seeds. These flavours were all wrong, added to this it was served with carrots, cabbage and a good old ladle full of what was nothing more than passata. None of these flavours went together and it wasn't an enjoyable dish, so much so that my partner left it. We got the obligatory "sorry about that" and that was it so we exited the building for the last time.

Went the bar to the girl that served us she says I never said no cranberry, I quite clearly did however she stood there and she told me I was wrong, so we left both meals and our drinks and left. I have run pubs for 15 years if my staff would of stood behind any of my bars and argued with a customer to cover her mistake I’d of asked them to leave. We ordered our drinks at the bar when we arrived and were shown to our table and given menus. Then we waited quite a while for someone to take our food order, thinking that perhaps we needed to go to the bar and order. Eventually a very pleasant young lady came. We both went for the roast beef which was delicious with a a good variety of vegetables and a very generous helping of beef. We had to go to the bar and ask for the sweet menu as once again nobody came near for some time. Disappointed that there was no sticky toffee pudding but the jam sponge was very good. We had visited and reviewed the Tollemache Arms before and the ideal opportunity arose again, on the 20th birthday of my daughter, for a revisit. We had been very much impressed by our first visit. I was looking for somewhere special and immediately thought of the Tollemache. We booked again and just hoped that they could repeat the quality of our previous visit: after all, we had the family coming over from Wales, my mother from Stoke and, most important of all, we wanted everything right for Hope. We needn’t have worried. We had been afforded a large dining area to ourselves, easily accommodating my daughter’s wheelchair and the party of 9. The food was perfect (not a minor gripe about any aspect of any of the courses from anyone – and we had some critics in there, I can say!) May the chef be commended again. The service from all the staff was second to none. We were made to feel very welcome and nothing was too much trouble. You can visit some places and no sooner have you sat down than the Management are already trying to fill your table with the next customers. Not here – so comfortable was the atmosphere that we did not leave until 5 and half hours later, and even then it only felt like we’d been there for 2. I believe that to be the sign of a very pleasant and successful visit! All in all, another 10 out of 10. Congratulations to all the Management and Staff for another faultless performance and thanks for making us feel so at home.

Both us and my family stayed in the rooms at the Tollemarche for the before and night of the wedding. The rooms were lovely and I had the gorgeous view looking over the garden onto the fields. They were so accommodating. Breakfast was delicious. Even did it early for us on the wedding day as we were getting married at 10.30 in the morning but n Chester. All the staff were so friendly and helpful. Had all our photos taken in their lovely garden. It was such a chilled out and relaxing day. Our reception meal was gorgeous. The chef did extremely well at getting out all 16 different orders for us at the same time. Kids loved it. Family loved it. Would highly recommend for any occasion or even just popping in for a drink and some yummy food.

Booked for lunch for my birthday and as we're from the wirral and the other family members live in stoke we met half way. Really nice welcome from nice friendly staff, food all delicious all had empty plates, the two who had roasts said they were impressed (and my mum is fussy with her roasts). I had lamb koftas which were delicious and crab cakes to start with Kimchi which I'd never tried before but it was lovely. Been here a few times now and it's about a 45 minute drive for us but worth it. Thank you tollemache arms for another good meal and enjoyable afternoon.

We stayed at The Tollemache Arms overnight after attending a wedding at Tilstone House. Dave the landlord let us book in and change prior to the wedding which was greatly appreciated as we had travelled from the Midlands. Dave and his team were so very welcoming, they gave us advice as to the best way to travel to the wedding church and location, nothing was too much trouble for them. The room had a beautiful view and was perfectly adequate for our needs, clean and comfortable. We both had a full English breakfast which was superb, well presented with good quality food and plenty of it. The coffee too was lovely. The Tollemache Arms is a really pleasant venue, there is a nice beer garden you can wonder around with pleasant views. There is also a lovely area set aside for more private parties; if we lived nearer we would definitely use this. A big 'thank you' to Dave and his team, we could not fault our stay.

We called at The Tollemache Arms on our way back from Cheshire Oaks. We ordered two mains and two drinks, £36. Not the cheapest, but the food was cooked fresh to order, homemade, piping hot and delicious. My Cajun chicken was really tasty!

We called in for lunch en-route to Chester, an area at the back of the pub was roped off for an event but there were still plenty of tables available. We had the lunch specials, 2 mains for £12, which were surprisingly good, the chilli was very tasty and was made with brisket of beef, the Scampi was good but portion control was too aggressive, the Spicy bean burger was tasty and the chips were excellent. The Robinsons beer did not disappoint, we will definitely call in on our next trip to Chester.

Service and atmosphere lovely. I ordered cajun chicken, salad and hand cut chips. It came quickly. The chips were soggy, greasy and mush in the middle. The salad was dropping in oil and tasteless. The chicken seemed rubbery and microwaved. No one came to ask how the food was. I didn't complain at the tone as I was taking my parents out. It was 3 hours ago and I can still taste the oil and grease.

Great food in the form of a chicken Caesar salad (fresh griddled hot chicken, crispy bacon, homemade croutons, anchovies & well dressed leaves) and fish & chips (crispy fish, good portion).

Stopped for a meal after a trip to Chester and found this dog friendly pub. The pub was beautiful and service was excellent. Ordered two steaks and they were wonderful and the accompanying chips were beautifully cooked. We finished with a slice of Nutella cheesecake and ice cream and a baileys coffee. With a pint each the total bill was £45. I cannot emphasise how good the whole experience was and I wish this place was closer to our home address. 100 % satisfied.

We found this lovely place in an idyllic location with a nice atmosphere on the off chance driving home from a day out. Food was delicious - I had the tuna steak. Don't know the name of the man who served us (he lived in America for a bit!) but his service was faultless. Very welcoming & friendly. Would definitely recommend the nutella cheese cake Wish we lived closer to visit more often but it'd certainly be worth the hours journey to return at some point.

Visited Saturday late afternoon so it was fairly quiet. We soon found a seat of our choice and obtained drinks which are reasonably priced. The food soon arrived with chunky if not very chunky own cooked chips. The food was tasty and freshly cooked and served piping hot.

We stayed at the New farm campsite and was recommended here by the owner as a great place in walking distance ( Just under an Hours flat walk ) to get a bite to eat, We walked over and was impressed from the second we walked through the door, The bar staff were incredibly accommodating and sorted us drinks and a table, the food was 10 out of 10, the Restaurant was immaculate and very nicely decorated with a huge beer garden at the back with children's play area, Dogs are welcomed even tho we hadn't fetched ours away with us ( Will be next time )and Dave the Manager will gladly go out of his way to help you out, Will definitely be back.

Popped in en route to a party. Ordered at the bar and found a table outside. Food was hot and as described and delicious. Staff friendly and courteous. We had chicken ceaser salad and burger & chips. Surroundings were nice. Patio could do with a jet wash and corridor to the loo a wipe down or lick of paint.

Called in for lunch. The pub was fairly quiet, possibly due to the very wet weather. The two ladies in the party had the Turkey Chiabatta, we two other halves elected for the Scampi and the Meatballs with Tomato Ragu and Linguine. Thought it was excellent value, good fare, prompt enough service, pleasant staff. We’ll be back no doubt. Yep, all good, eat here.

We stopped for a snack but were tempted by the Sunday lunch menu. Excellent locally-sourced beef, roast potatoes like mum used to make them, and lots of healthy veg. What a pleasant surprise and full marks to the chef for the quality of the food, the presentation and for making our afternoon. The young staff were helpful and courteous too. Highly recommended!

I have often driven passed the tollemache Arms and thought how inviting it looked from outside, especially when it is lit up at night. Finally decided to go for lunch on bank holiday Monday. We were so glad we did, we received a warm welcome from the bar staff. The decor is lovely inside with lit candles on some of the tables. We ordered tea for two which was served in a large china teapot accompanied by china cups for the price of £3.95.Our food arrived quickly and was piping hot, portions were generous and meals were well presented. The steak and ale pie was amazing, plenty of lean meat and you can definitely taste the ale in it,comes with hand cooked chips and salad, £12.95.There is a beer garden outside overlooking the local countryside. If travelling to Chester /North Wales pop in and give it a try, you won't be disappointed

I stayed here as was at oulton park for British superbikes. Only a 10 mintue drive away. Very warm welcome when I checked in. The room was clean and tidy. The shower was easy to use and lovely and warm. Very clear information book telling you what the services were. I left an item behind at hotel which I discovered on the Monday night when I got home. I then phoned up and said that I thought i had left an item behind. The lady on the phone went and had a look straight away she was very helpful. The lady found what I had left behind and very kindly said they would post it to me. Very friendly staff behind the bar would definitely stay here again.

Stopped in on our way home from Chester on Sunday afternoon. Starving. The food was lovely and well presented. The place itself was nicely decorated. The staff were excellent, helpful and friendly. Unfortunately, the choice of music being piped in was dreadful and did not make for intimate conversation. Our orders took quite a while and had to be chased up. Aside from the last 2 points, it is a nice find and if passing again, we'd definitely go in (but not near any music speakers).

We have visited the Tollemache Arms in Alpraham several times and the atmosphere is always very relaxed, friendly and welcoming. The food is always excellent and the staff are always attentive. It has an unhurried atmosphere and you can relax after your meal without being hurried along for the next sitting, unlike many restaurants these days that are eager to get several sittings a night for each table!

Our foursome on Saturday Night, 13th April, thoroughly enjoyed our evening in the Tollemache Arms. The beer was good, the food was excellent in all respects. Steaks were cooked to perfection, fish was cooked just like fish should be, if you like cajun chips, you will find it difficult not to order more and more. All the plates were empty when the table was cleared. The Staff were great, excellent value for money all round.

We'd visited the Tollemache Arms previously, and decided that it would be a nice idea to take my mother on Mother's Day. We’d left it rather late, ringing up to book a table only a week earlier. To my surprise they were able to accommodate our party of 5 (including 1 wheelchair). We turned up on the day expecting it to be bustling with activity. Again we were pleasantly surprised. There was a good turn out but because of the layout of the pub and the arrangement of the tables, there was plenty of space which, because of my daughter’s wheelchair, was a great relief.

I am staying at BW for work and booked dinner at Hilltops on my first night. I was initially nervous that there didn't appear to be anything suitable for vegans on the menu, but I double checked with the receptionist, who was very helpful and communicated my request to the restaurant. This was a short-notice request, so I was not expecting much, but the chefs went above and beyond. The tofu & veg curry was really tasty, and the choc fudge cake was delicious. I couldn't eat it all in one sitting, but the team prepared the leftovers for me to take to my room and eat later. Thank you to the talented kitchen team and wonderful front of house team at Hilltops!

We were visiting the Anderton Boat Lift which is just 10 minutes down the towpath from The Moorings. As the coffee shop there was quite full after the boat trip we decided to try somewhere else close by. The Moorings is a little gem of a place, run by chefs, so expect hotel like presentation of excellent food, which is worth waiting for. This is a totally different dining experience from the usual canal side cafe. Dogs are allowed inside on the hard floor area, but we sat outside with ours as it was a beautiful day and we could admire the canal boats in the marina.
