Blue Cap in Cheshire West and Chester

Four of us visited on Bank Holiday Monday having heard really good things about the restaurant. We were very disappointed. The toad in the hole was burnt all the way through. How any self respecting professional chef could allow inedible food the leave their kitchen is beyond me. We also ordered the mix grill but the steak we ordered medium rare was overcooked and tough as old boots. It was also missing the egg which arrived separately on a plate swimming in oil. The very small pieces of bream only came with a handful of chips. Service was poor - we were waiting for 10 minutes for our dessert menus while the staff were chatting behind the bar. It certainly didn't justify the £100+ bill.

We felt like we were just an inconvenience from the moment we walked through the door. My Mum has always chosen the blue cap as a meeting place as it is pretty much equal distance between our properties, but I think after the now 5th disappointing visit we shall find somewhere else. The lady who always seems to serve us when we visit is so rude, she is impatient when taking your order, and tries to ignore you as much as she possibly can when you try to order any extras after the initial food order has been taken ( we have frequently ended up having to go to the bar to order drinks and puddings, and even to pay the bill, usually alongside other guests having to do the same). This last visit was possibly the worst. I was served tea with the milk jug shoved in the cup so that she could carry the pot and cup/milk without bothering with a tray. This was plonked unceremoniously without a word on the table in front of my mum ( I had ordered the tea), and when I tried to get a new cup ( because the grubby milk jug had left a gritty mark) she blatantly ignored me until the tea was cold. My daughter asked for mayonnaise with her chips which was served in a small ramekin with a thick 'skin' formed on the mayo. When she dipped her chips in it and took a bite we discovered it had gone off ( or wasn't mayonnaise - it tasted awful). She decided not to ask for more as we were being ignored and she thought her chips would probably go cold before we received a new one, and that we would probably be offered a new pot of the same mayonnaise. I ordered a lemonade for my son which was served gripped by the rim of the glass ( where you drink from) rather than held around the middle of the glass which is the usual and hygienic way of doing so, which was really off putting. We eventually had to go to the bar to pay as nobody came over to the table after our mains were served. We were never offered menus for pudding. We are not troublesome customers, we didn't even complain about our treatment ( I know we should have, and perhaps some of the issues are our fault for not doing so), so I really have no idea why we were treated so badly. The food can be ok, but for the price you pay for main meals you can get a far superior meal a few minutes down the road at the fishpool or abbey arms, and much, much better service. A meal out is meant to be a treat, the service at this pub makes it feel anything but. We shall not be returning.

We visited the Blue Cap for dinner and it was absolutely fantastic! The pub itself was very traditional but with a modern twist. The food was beautiful and the staff were fantastic, especially our waitress Lara, she was so attentive and genuine. We will definitely be returning.

We went for a family meal. Others have eaten here before. I've not been for years. . Can highly recommend service was great food was great thanks harry will definitely be visiting again

Attended a 50th wedding anniversary celebration in the function room. The food was tasty, the service was attentive and Danielle really looked after us and made sure everyone was happy and had what they needed

A nice pub with lots of parking. Sadly, the food menu no longer worth it with limp, gritty veg and microwaved warmed pies. The only redceeming feature of a recent visit was the consistanly excellent chips. I'd avoid if you want decent food for the time being.

Wonderful, can't praise The Blue Cap enough, we celebrated our Golden Wedding Anniversary with our family (19 adults and 2 children). The organisation was excellent, so professional, from the initial booking with Kayte, to the efficiency of Harry who organised on the day, to the delightful, helpful and thoroughly charming Danielle who served us all with a smile, thank you so much.

Excellent food and service. I travel quite a lot and eat out regularly, and the food was great and on par with much more expensive restaurants I have recently visited. I had the lamb rump special. I was served by Harry and Maxine

we would not normally visit a chef and brewer pub as in the past they have seemed expensive for a meal but with all prices going up, they were actually comparably priced had a combination of the pie ,burgers, and the fish good sized portions meals arrived relatively quickly and were well presented and very tasty very impressed also staff very friendly as well if in the area again, we will return

I can honestly say that was the best roast I’ve ever had! We ordered extras but the portion size was so huge we couldn’t eat it all!! Also my ten year old son had a kids meal which isn’t normally big enough but it was great! Great value for him that includes pudding. Can’t wait to come back, staff fantastic also! 10/10 all round!

Today we called in here after a walk in Delamere Forest as we fancied a pub lunch. This place has a beautiful interior with lots of seating, and outside seating for a warm day. The server was absolutely great and helped us decide on dishes. The food came out quick. Everything was good. If im 100% honest my chicken breast was slightly dry but the meal was still nice! Ive had other dishes here before that were really nice, especially the desserts. I’d definitely return as it was decent food at a good price, in a lovely place!

Stopped off with the family for lunch. Three of us had the 4oz steak ciabatta which was delicious and two the equally impressive Chicken and bacon all served with a decent amount of skin on fries. We will definitely be returning.

Excellent, attentive and friendly

Stayed at the premier Inn next door which is a stones throw away, very handy. Evening Sunday. Melted camenberg starter was delicious. The steak and ale pie was nice but had trouble finding much steak in the pie. The Duo of chicken was OK, although the chicken strips were mostly batter and the cold salad and chutney didn't sit well on the same plate with the hot food. All in all, we found the experience very pleasant but rather expensive. A big shout out to Emma, our server who was so lovely and was genuinely looking after us... A lovely young lady, thank you x

Fantastic place to visit, built in 1716, exterior and interior to match. Great staff, very chatty, smiles all around servers Sammi & Harry couldn't do enough for us. My fiancee and I had the best chicken and beefburger that we have ever tasted ang great prices too! Meet the 'Blue Cap' dog and read of his famous exploits! We shall definitely visit again! If you only visit once you shall never forget it!

Great food and large portions for the money. Service was atrocious though. Servers forgot requests, frequently disappeared for long periods, and generally seemed to be actively avoiding eye contact so as not to be bothered. A shame because the venue itself and the food were great!

Had another lovely meal there yesterday, well worth a visit

Possibly the worst Sunday lunch ever. The staff, not welcoming or friendly or helpful. The so called" roast beef served pink" was anything but. Had probably sat under a heat lamp for hours. The only thing enjoyable was our grandson's chocolate brownie. Will definitely not return.

We recently held my father's Wake here. Kate and her team did an excellent job from the initial arranging to the service provided on the actual day. The buffet was plentiful and of a high standard. We received many comments on how nice the food was. Would highly recommend.

Food is excellent, the pub had a really good atmosphere, and the staff was extremely pleasant. Only down fall was food, which took nearly half hour saying it wasn't that busy. I thought it was a little too long

We were staying at the Premier Inn next door. and were so impressed with our meal on the first night that we came back again on the second night. The service was excellent, and the food arrived promptly and was also exellent. No complaints at all

Hadn’t been to the Blue Cap for a while as our last visit wasn’t the best but we thought we’d try again and I have to say the service was amazing! We were looked after by Jake and Emma who both gave amazing service! I called in person earlier in the day to enquire about some special dietary requirements I had they went above and beyond to accommodate my needs. We were also celebrating my Partners 50th Birthday and the evening was made to feel extra special! I really can’t thank you enough, very clean, amazing food and outstanding customer service! We will most definitely be back soon! Thankyou!

The food was amazing and the service impeccable. This was the first time we have gone to the Burns Night at the Blue Cap, no other reason than work responsibilities but we were glad we went on the 25th January this year. Can not rave enough about the quality of food and as said before the impeccable service. Can not wait to go as soon as my husband and myself get a night off together. Please keep up the fantastic work.

I visited this charming establishment while I stayed at the Premier In next door. I found the experience very delightful. Friendly and accommodating staff, warm atmosphere, and a varied menu choice with occasional "Specials". Enjoyed every meal, tasty and filling. Must mention there Mushroom and Ale pie, Smothered Chicken, and crispy Cod and Chips. Definitely recommended

Visited for the burns night menu. Although there only appeared to be a handful of staff, all very attentive and readily available. Food was great from the 4 course special menu, especially the second course which was the haggis. Food was piping hot and good portion sizes. Very enjoyable food and evening.

Hi visited the pub with 2 friends who haven’t been before Knew it would be good food as usual Surprised it was as quiet as it was but it was all good and food exceeds expectations taste wise !

Me and my family had a lovely meal at the Blue Cap tonight. My son and daughter have sensory needs and it can be difficult and very overwhelming for them when we eat out. From the moment we were seated at our table, the staff could not of been more welcoming and accommodating they made us feel completely at ease. The food was lovely the portions were big, and we will definitely be going back in the future.

Went in for Sunday Lunch I would recommend it was the lovely one best I had in a while, ordered the trio of roast, and Turkey times two, and the Pork all was well cooked, and ordered extra Macaroni cheese side.

We were met by lovely staff and because I have trouble with stairs they made sure we were seating just inside restaurant. The service was great. Food was hot and enjoyable.

Had a lovely meal here today. My partner had the mixed grill and I ordered the smothered chicken. The lady who took the order forgot to put on my meal which was obviously a genuine mistake but was more than rectified. When the meal came out it was absolutely lovely and I enjoyed a liqueur coffee afterwards. We didn't complain as I've worked in hospitality in the past and you feel mortified as it is when you make mistakes without customers kicking off so we let it go. When we paid the bill, the smothered chicken meal had been taken off so of course we were more than happy with the gesture. Thank you for a lovely meal and we will be back 😊

Myself and my partner visited here twice last year once in August and once in December. On both visits we were greeted by a lovely member of staff who gave us both a warm welcoming smile. The staff member showed us to our table and gave us time to look at the menu. I would recommend Blue Cap in Sandiway, Chester to any of my friends and family even if you are just passing through.

Great place to go for your usual pub meal. We had the mushroom pie and the steak and ale pie. Atmosphere was lovely. Whenever in the area make this place is on your list to try.

Food over cooked and almost burnt

For the price of the food, it was a bit disappointing. The meals all came with some ingredients missing (which when mentioned, were brought over straight away - some with a bit of a fuss however). The veggie sausage butty was clearly reheated sausages as they’d gone hard. The food was nice other than that. Disappointed to find the premier inn breakfast finished at 10:00 but the brunch menu was still okay.

Booked for Sunday lunch and ordered 2 soups one rib of beef and one roast turkey dinner. The soup was tasteless and the waiter spilled part of it on the table . The main courses arrived both cold and the turkey had a bad texture and strange taste. We never complain as a rule but felt we had to in this instance. The waitress apologised and said their turkey was like marmite some liked it others didn't!!! They only charged us for one meal which we accepted but wouldn't go again

Went in for a drink ,didnt have food but it looked nice,very dissatisfied with the service, lady behind the bar, was quite happyto ignore us and serve people that came in after us,she didnt seem interested unless it was someone she knew ,just moved to area so will be giving the place a miss from now on

Absolutely love the Blue Cap! We go almost every week and still can’t get enough. The food is amazing - the burger is the best burger I’ve ever had and everything else on the menu is delicious too. The staff are super friendly and always happy to help, thanks Harry and Ella for looking after us every Saturday!

Excellent all round. Served by Emma who was the consummate host. Nothing was too much trouble and was very chatty and pleasant. The food itself to mix, grills, garlic, bread, and belly pork we're all cooked to perfection, so no complaints whatsoever.
