We were served by Grace, who was incredibly polite and patient, despite it being busy. Food was good but did see potatoes being put on top of older potatoes which was slightly offputting.

Food was barely lukewarm when it arrived even though we are less than a mile away. Yorkshire pudding even though they looked nice tasted like the oil had burnt before they were cooked so had a burnt oil taste. Cauliflower was barely cooked and was really hard. Roast potatoes weren’t crispy they were very soggy and burnt black. Only saving grace was the turkey was nice and tasty gravy, won’t be using them again as was not worth the money paid. Put most of it out for the fox.

I recently visited Toby Carvery and had the absolute pleasure of being served by Tracy. From the moment we walked in, she greeted us with a warm, genuine smile and made us feel incredibly welcome. Her friendly and professional demeanor set the tone for what turned out to be a fantastic dining experience. Tracy went above and beyond to ensure that everything was perfect for us. She was attentive without being intrusive, always checking in at just the right moments to see if we needed anything. What truly stood out was her ability to create a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere. Despite the restaurant being busy, Tracy managed to provide exceptional service with a personal touch. She was efficient, polite, and had a wonderful sense of humor, making our visit even more enjoyable. The food was delicious, as always at Toby Carvery, but it was Tracy’s service that made the experience truly memorable. She is a credit to the team, and I sincerely hope management recognises the hard work and dedication she puts into making guests feel valued. If you’re visiting Toby Carvery, I highly recommend asking for Tracy – she will ensure you have a fantastic time. We will definitely be returning, thanks to her outstanding hospitality!

Went for lunch, first time in a Toby so unsure what to expect. Our server was lovely, very friendly and helpful. House red was good, brother enjoyed his Guinness and the others had unlimited soft drinks. Not much left of the meat although there was a fresh joint of beef, so we all had that. The vegetables were plentiful with lots of choice, although I have to say none of it was hot, warm is more accurate, so that was disappointing. I booked a table asking for room to have a pram and they obliged with perfectly situated seating. At no point were we rushed, our server checked everything was okay, if we wanted more drinks, etc. For a very reasonably priced lunch you really can't do any better, especially as the potatoes and vegetables are unlimited if you want to go back for more. We didn't.

Went for breakfast. Apparently unlimited. When we paid, I wasn't reminded of what time breakfast service closes. Perhaps I should have asked. So got some oily fried eggs, dry bacon and very liquid baked beans, as well as a nice potato cheese bake. There were also hash browns and black pudding as well as a large Yorkshire pudding or puddings. Looks like the Yorkshire's were baked together, but then had to be surgically separated with a set of tiny teaspoons. Unless they exploded in the oven to give this really other-worldly appearance. We turned some bread into toast in that slow travellator machine, but I'm always intrigued why there is a setting for burning the toast. And why, on this day, despite the protective cover, that the burn setting was chosen. I have yet to meet someone that intentionally toasts a slice of bread until it is black, and I'm 60 years old! And yet here we were - dark black toast produced. In the absence of staff, we simply sat down with our offerings, but had there been some staff bobbing between tables, we would have spoken up. Meanwhile , on the other side of the display, we were fortunate to get a coffee from the full pot. Many of the tables were full of discarded breakfast remains from previous diners, so staff were somewhat slow to collect these. So finally, after some eating and chatting, I noticed it was 11.10 and decided on another coffee with an accompanying slice of toast with marmalade; but to my surprise, the coffee pot and toast machines had gone. Meanwhile, turned around to see the first carvery roasts of the day, that made it to the serving area. Where I guess they sit under the lights to dry out until lunch starts at 12. I rarely if ever, visit a Toby carvery for breakfast because we don't have one near where I live, and only did so today because Octopus Energy gave me a voucher. So it's a pity that serving times weren't mentioned at the till point, or that staff didn't sweep round with a verbal reminder, while collecting dishes from the nearby tables. Although I got one free breakfast for my party, via the exorbitant cost of my Octopus gas and electricity supply, I did expect to be able to get one more coffee under the Toby Unlimited Coffee scheme, but that was an unfulfilled dream. Next month, I will try breakfast again; otherwise the carvery in the afternoon.

Toby is a place a large group can go and eat cheap food with plenty of space……but not a lot more to it. Even though you book they never seem fully prepared and it feels like you’re in a low budget establishment. (I’m not a snob! But it’s cheapskate!). The porridge and strawberries were nice! Most of the group had the full English breakfast and I didn’t hear them complaining. If you like quality, good service & ambience……it isn’t for you. Have the right expectations and you’ll be fine, if not, full!

Oh dear what has happened here. Booked our usual table just inside the door for my grandaughters birthday. The idea was she was to be surprised by her friends without disturbing the rest of the customers. The guy on the door said the table was meant for 5, and as there were 4 of us we couldn't sit there despite there only being 3 people just finishing sitting there at the time. He said they were very busy, but half the tables were empty. We ended up being poked away somewhere else so the big surprise didn't happen. The service was so slow. After finishing the first course and waiting over 15 mins we had to find a waitress for our second course. Despite going to this restaurant every week for a very long time, maybe a friday is not the day to go. Think we got rather settled with the usual staff and today these others weren't very accommodating. Not sure when we will return.

My boyfriend enjoyed his egg ...however the bacon was undercooked . And who serves Yorkshire puddings for breakfast ?? They do apparently...? And with bacon inside the Yorkshire pudding ?! When I politely complained *and I never complain usually when I go out for food * about no vegetarian sausages I was told *if you want some you have to ask the chef and he will make some * = that's fine but there is no signs saying so !! Appears to be a nice pub, with friendly staff and the food was good on the Friday lunchtime we visited. A chip-free pub on all accounts, which makes a nice change. Sadly during the lunchtime we visited there was no hand soap, and the hand dryer was broken, in the gents toilets. The carvery is popular so be prepared to wait a good 10 or so minutes during busy lunch times. Sadly not the easiest place to park if driving, as spaces are limited, especially during busy periods.

2 of us went here yesterday morning for our first Toby breakfast.It was the first morning of an offer so busy but not overly. The whole experience was chaotic,amateurish, anything but relaxing. But it was good value for money.The food itself was ok but not great.Some horrible slimy diced potato dish (tepid).Bacon ok if you fished around for good bits.Eggs very small,very underdone and swimming in oil.Beans scarce in a large bowl of just the juice..needed refilling.Sausages fine as were mushrooms and tinned tomatos.Hash browns bit tough but ok. Yorkies didn't contain the diced bacon or whatever it said on the menu online,clearly fromthe carvery the night before.Help yourself to toast and drinks..both fine.The problem is(as a staff member told me)there's not enough staff and they are penny pinching too.Butter ran out twice.Same with Marmaade.Eggs ran out and so did milk.No small bowl or cup or saucer to put used tea bags in. You get given a knife and fork and a mug and a teaspoon when you pay in advance at the bar.I dropped my knife.There is no spare cutlery at all..chef told me to go to the bar where there is a queue of people arriving.No spare mugs if you want a coffee and then a tea (free refills).And on top of all of this there is absolutley no one around to get anything topped up ,same with hot food. I yelled at the top of my voice over the hot food through to the kitchen.The whole restaurant looked up (no,really) but it took 3 goes for someone from the kitchen to come out to tell them there were no eggs.So if you're not too fussy and you make the most of the free refills its not to bad a place to spend an hour or 2.

Unhappy with the service. Needed a passport to have a nonalcoholic beer at a restaurant despite the law being able to drink an alcoholic drink with a meal at the age of 16. The manger could not comply with the law as he was worried he may be sent to prison for serving an 18 year old a non alcoholic beer. This company have gone above and beyond the law of the UK to limit the simplest of freedoms and enjoyments in the manner in which they feel. The liberty of exercising individual rights are being eroded at every step and even just by sitting down with a family and having Sunday lunch is being restrained to another’s personal views.

This happens to be the third time, time before water was flooding from the kitchen, then another time notice on door explaining they were closed due to staff shortages. Becoming a habit. We had driven over from Brighton, couldn't a staff member have informed us so as to save a journey. We found a local pub in Hove, but unfortunately the children were so disappointed as they like the gammon at Toby. Let us hope next that time everything is working order. We visited the Toby carvery for breakfast yesterday (Sunday) 2/2/25. I was extremely disappointed having used this venue for many years Including back when it was called the George. We queued for our breakfast and I requested scrambled eggs which one of the workers behind the counter went to make. I waited there for 10 minutes with my plate of food to add the scrambled eggs and nobody came out. I went back to my table to put the plate down, then returned to the counter where I was told that the eggs had been given out already! Obviously, not to me. By the time I returned to sit down my food was virtually cold. We queued for another 10 minutes to make some toast and all in all with queueing to get a hot Drink it was not a pleasant experience and cost me £40 for the four of us. I never did receive the scrambled eggs.Very disappointed.

If customers are queuing out of the door then everything works beautifully. Food is great and service is friendly and prompt. But it’s a completely different experience if you are coming in during quiet periods. We had a 7.30pm booking tonight, the carvery was basically full of scraps. Scraping the bowl of gravy to get some, meat dry, and everything tasted like it had been on the heat for hours. The service falls apart as well, waitresses on their phones and nobody behind the bar. The kids drinks machine served me fizzy brown water too, obvs nobody has checked on the syrups for days. Needs managing properly in quiet times. The site at Downlands offers a better experience at any time of day.

Usually I love a Toby Carvery but not this time. The restaurant was chaos! The queue for food was ridiculously long, and the restaurant was hugely under staffed. Despite booking we waited nearly 40mins to be seated and if this wasn’t annoying enough we were sent to the bar area to wait, which that had virtually no seating available, used glasses were everywhere, with discarded old dinner plates piling up on disused tables. Thank goodness the food was decent. Note to self, avoid at weekends.

Had an excellent lunch with friends. Varied menu to suit everyone’s tastes with easy adjustment to one meal to suit particular dietary requirement. Delicious desserts and lovely, attentive service from Sophie and Caris. Would definitely recommend.

Sadly during these challenging times a warmer welcome could be had. To be told closing in half an hour, before being welcomed is sad to hear.

Everyone was nice here and helpful. Been a few times to a Toby and often staff are clearly unhappy and they huff and anything is too much trouble. Today however the staff were great. Especially David on the buffet! I’ve never met such a pleasant, sociable and kind guy on the carvery. He was brilliant!

Nad service and very poor staff. It gives the impression they do no like customers and cannot even greet you at the door or bar;
