Having previously visited with and when booking requested a quiet area if possible due to someone within the group having recently been discharged from a long hospital stay and with high anxiety - this was honoured and we were very grateful - only for the manager to come over almost the second we had finished our food and tell us that the table was needed - but it was no where close to the booking time being up - we ended up sitting outside as was going to buy more drinks, but the distruption meant we ended up just leaving. I was dubious about returning again after a negative experience, but we enjoyed the food before so decided to revisit - this visit was lovely, and made us confirm that our previous negative experience was just an unfortunate visit. I regret not getting the ladies name took our food orders, but she was fantastic so polite, attentive and friendly and some of the food we wanted slight changes too and she ensured this was sorted. We had food from the set menu - we were so impressed at the price, and quality and portion sizes, and the wait time was just right - allowing us to finish our starters before the mains were brought out. I had caramel cheesecake for pudding - it was so good highly recommend. The lady who took our order was the most incredible person I've met - possibly ever. This lady had a disability that was relatively new to her - but she was incredible and despite everything was still serving customers with a smile and going above and beyond checking our food was all alright, and being so attentive to noticing when we had finished and wanted to bill. Having recently myself had amputation surgery and struggling with processing it, seeing someone getting on with their life and working and not letting their disability stop them at all was beyond inspiring, a real credit to the North star.

There is also a special children’s menu. The food is excellent and well presented. The staff are all very pleasant. Helpful, efficient and friendly. We have been fortunate to be served at our table by Wendy and couldn’t have better service. The bar staff too are very welcoming. Our order was taken in good time and our lunch arrived within a very reasonable time. We would thoroughly recommend this establishment without hesitation.

Visited yesterday for pre show meal with friends. Waited half an hour for drinks which when they came one was sent back as tasted “mouldy” as if drawn through mouldy pipes. Asked for quick service as time was getting on. Eventually had to chase up our order as it was taking so long. When meals came three were cold and we had to send them back. By the time they were replaced the others in our party had finished theirs. We came out with the aim of eating together ! Time was too short for dessert then we had to chase for the bill. Bad service, cold food medium quality food. Our evening was spoiled.

Had a 40% voucher which was a relief as we wouldn't have wanted to pay almost £50 for what we had (with drinks would have been over £80.) Positives: Nice place. Good refurbishment. Clean. Fabulous, polite staff. Negatives: not much of an atmosphere even though it was busy. Half an hour wait for the meal to be served. Steak was a bit fatty..teaspoonful of peas, half a mushroom and half a tomato..had to pay extra for peppercorn sauce (runny) and cajun fries? Didn't taste cajun. Dressed side salad!!! Almost £3. 3 pieces of lettuce, one slice of tomato and no dressing !! Come on!!!! Will return for a drink but will give the food a miss. Shame.

Came here on a Sunday for brunch/lunch. We were received with a cheery morning greeting, which was nice considering the unseasonably raining July weather! We were asked if we had booked, which we hadn't. We were offered a choice of tables with service or sitting in the bar area without table service. We chose to sit in the restaurant area. We liked the look if the Sunday menu and the brunch. We both chose the classic full English. The food came quickly and very hot. Everything was cooked perfectly! We were checked on frequently but not harassed. Over all pleasantly surprised! £23 for two breakfasts and a drink each. Just to add that another table came with extensive dietary requirements and they seemed very accommodating and patient. Will definitely return again Would advise that you book, especially on a Sunday as it was getting very busy.

I've been to this pub on many occasions over many years, only living a short walk away but this was my first visit since it's recent "revamp" and first restaurant experience this year & It was a really disappointing experience unfortunately. Booked a table for 4 on Sunday, for my daughters 9th Birthday. As soon as we arrived I could tell they looked short staffed, not a problem we're in no rush and it can't be helped sometimes. What really disappointed / annoyed me was my daughter had purposely put her new dress & sparkly shoes on to dress up for a meal out, holding her helium huge number 9 balloon - excited feeling grown up, eventually a lady came over, who i assume was the restaurant manager as she was not in an ember inns shirt, she acknowledged me and confirmed a table for 4 reservation, at no point did she even make the effort to acknowledge my daughter or even wish her a Happy Birthday - busy or not this is just a polite thing to do costs nothing and takes no time. This continued with every interaction with every staff member we had contact with. Once we'd finished the food which was not bad, average I guess, it was time to light the candles and have her birthday cake. I waited a while no one came over to clear the table so I placed all the plates on the table next to us and waited some more. Still no one, so I went to the bar waited some more time & politely asked for 4 small plates and knife to cut the cake - I was of course given these without the mutter of one word again from the restaurant manager. Thanks. We set the cake up with some candles and lit them, sang Happy Birthday much to my daughters embarrassment and thankfully for her the atmosphere was so bad in here that not one other table or person joined in with the happy birthday (as I say I think my daughter was very pleased with that) but more to point out the awful atmosphere in the Northstar on a Sunday at 6pm! - all was good we had the cake then waited some more for someone to come over (the dirty plates still sat on the table next to us) and I wanted to pay the bill. No one arrived, so I decided to go to the bar to pay, waited some more... the bar person asked what table I was on, I had no idea, eventually and after complete silence from the bar staff team member for some time she suddenly blurted out can you check the bill and make sure you're happy with it - I confirmed it was correct and paid. Our little party left to complete silence, not one thank you not one did you enjoy your meal and more importantly to me not one member of staff acknowledging my Daughter and wished her a happy birthday. Now she was non the wiser thankfully and enjoyed her time, I however am left absolutely underwhelmed & disgusted than those who chose a career in the service industry clearly have no idea how to provide service. Sadly what an awful experience I certainly wont be repeating.

We have been to the Toby Carvery in Goring for years but this visit was extremely disappointing and one of the worst visits we have ever had. Upon arriving, we were greeted by the front of the house hostess, who had such a nonchalant attitude, it was hard to feel welcome. She took forever finding our booking, staring vacantly at her screen and then proceeded to quickly show us to our table and left back in a hurry, mumbling something which made us feel like an inconvenience. We were surprised to be sat in the bar area since we had specifically requested NOT to be sat there so went back to her and she simply stated that the other side of the restaurant was for disabled people only (???). This bears to question as to how disabled people can make it up the stairs in the main restaurant area? When we went to the carvery to get our lunch, we only saw one person in a wheelchair and the rest of the guests were not showing any disabilities anywhere in that part of the restaurant. One of us requested a bit of everything from the all the meats and was given literally crumbs from the turkey and tiny slithers from the other meat joints. I would never dare serving such pitiful portions at home to my family. The carver serving was swearing quite blatantly in front of the guests "we do bloody everything here" and rushing people with their orders, again, not the welcome you would expect when you pay to go out for lunch. The mash had run out so I requested a new pot and had to stand there for 5 minutes before some new mash was brought out, while the rest of the vegetables on my plate were going cold. Paying £15 for slithers and crumbs of meat and £12.99 for a meat free carvery (having simply veg on the plate) is a very steep price especially when the environment is not welcoming. If there has been a recent change in management, you may want to rethink your new staff and bring the old staff back as the previous front of the house manager was always welcoming and could never do enough to help. A very disappointing experience, not conducive to renewing a visit anytime soon.
