Cafe Montague in Worthing

CLOSED On the 9th of June 2024 we went to The Montague cafe for a early morning breakfast but found it CLOSED the tattered paper covering the windows gave me impresion it had been closed for a considerable time. Mabye they are doing renovations and reopen all shiny and new if so I would be happy to revise my (disliked it) rating.

We walked in- got funny looks We sat down- the atmosphere did not feel welcoming. We decided to leave.

Turned up at half 7because Google said it was open at 7 and it was closed. Bloody useless

Great food at very reasonable prices.

Friendly place, helpful staff. Good fresh food. Took my 90 year old mother there for lunch in a wheelchair (we were short of time too) and staff were very accomodating.

Good value for money and quick service

Nice cafe just off of worthing seafront. Good selection of sandwiches, jacket potatoes and main meal. Cakes and puddings are available. Staff are efficient and polite, and meals came hot. There are toilets available for customers. No direct parking nearby. Worth a visit if out in town as it is far better than all the chain options, but you do pay a bit more for the better food.

Love this cafe, they understand gluten and dairy free and use clean utensils so no cross contamination. Lovely food to eat in or take away

Great vegan breakfast, available in regular or large (the one pictured is the regular). Price includes a tea or a coffee, with a range of dairy-free milks available. Vegan mayonnaise also available. Plenty of seating available outside, with views of the pier/sea

Absolutely fantastic attitude towards disabled customers and very friendly atmosphere. Gluten free options were in abundance. The guys at the counter were so nice and helpful. Also rather tasty coffee.

Just had the breakfast and I can honestly say it was absolutely delicious! Great sausages and they listened to my order and actually gave me crispy bacon!! At last!! Well recommended.

The cafe is nice, could do with a refurb though. Service was okay, wouldn’t go there if it looks busy though! The English breakfast was nice, coffee is mediocre. The sandwiches are on very cheap break, I was expecting bloomer or something but got the thinnest slices going. Way too much Mayo, too a bite and it swam out.

I didn’t think anyone could screw up a BLT but this was terrible. Had it to go or I would have said something instead of posting here. Low quality ingredients, over cooked bacon, soggy stale baguette.. wish I could turn back time and remove it from my body.

Had a gorgeous coronation chicken sandwich on brown bread. The filling was packed with tender chick and slivers of almonds with a mild curry taste. Best ever! Lovely friendly staff and quick service even though they were extremely busy. My daughter couldn't decide between brie or stilton in her bacon sarnie so they suggested both. Definitely visit again.

I love everything about this cafe. Its our weekly treat when we take my Dad shopping. The food is freshly prepared and excellent value for money.

I would give this place 0 stars if that were an option. Highly dissatisfied, the staff were rude and looked down at us, there were 2 large, noticeable hairs in my chips and my boyfriend had a chicken wrap and 2 hours later came down with signs of food poisoning. Very worrying coming from a busy town cafe.

We had coffee's and shared a lovely cake. Lemon and Raspberry. Unfortunately one coffee was too far too strong. Therefore not finished. A bit disappointing.

Had coffee and a bacon, brie and cranberry toasted sandwich. Lots of filling in the toasties and the coffee was good. Staff friendly despite being really busy.

Came for lunch on a Fri afternoon,, the place was very busy, it's a bit dated but has a large seating area outside so can see why it's busy. Watch out for all the mobility scooters that take up a lot of space, I guess with such a large outside space that it's most accessible for them Waited quite a while in the queue, I appreciate there was only one lady working. Ordered my food, got my receipt with my order num and sat outside. We had cold drinks, a milkshake and can of pop, part of my order came out after a while and i had finished that b4 I got the rest of my order. When I got it part of it was wrong so I said this isn't what I asked for and said i had waited too long and didn't want it changing I just asked for a refund. The young girl (only staff serving tables it seemed) said she would be back. The other food was also not hot enough so that was sent back also. A man came back with my order and it had the wrong thing on the receipt and i was told that whoever took my order would have read my order back to me but they hadn't or i would have realised she misheard me and corrected her. We got a partial refund for the thing that wasn't what I ordered but we left hungry fed up and not wanting to return there

The attitude of the staff was appalling. You were lucky to get a grunt. No acknowledgment when you entered the cafe with the result that several people left. Avoid unless you like being ignored!

THIS IS AN IDEAL PLACE TO HAVE LUNCH,GOOD FOOD.RESONABLY PRICED.VERY CLEAN,PLEASANT STAFF.VARIED MENU.

Great place for a decent breakfast that is great value.

Great little spot for early morning coffee. Nothing is great, but solid and good value. Worth a visit to eaves drop on the locals gossiping. Next door to a big national coffee chain. Go to the Montague instead

Ouside seating area at the front is nice on a sunny day, altho wouldn't risk eating outside with predatory seagulls on the loose. Indoors is a bit gloomy and could use better lighting or lighter interiors and some ventilation (someone was smoking outside and the smoke wafted in and couldn't get out, which was a turnoff when you're trying to enjoy your breakfast). Food was good tho. Had a good first experience with black pud and bubble and squeak. Just a shame with the awful cigarette smell ruining the experience.

First time visiting here during my lunch break and hoping for a variety of vegan options looking at the extensive board. Fancied a simple sandwhich or panini. Asked for options as not much displayed. Told there was none except for vegan breakfast out of all the sandwhich, toastie, panini, jacket potato, bagel, main meal and soup options which was rather disappointing and no effort to accommodate. Went for the breakfast choice. Toast came out cold and vegan butter wouldn't even melt. Mushrooms soggy and hash brown oily. I was left rather underwhelmed. You get what you pay for as lower in price than other places locally. So 2 stars for that and as the coffee was quite nice. Better than costa in my opinion, which i think the server discounted the price but i don't know why. Young lad didn't ask if i had finished when he took my plate away which i would have thought is common etiquette of waitering. Unfortunately i will not be returning due to poor current dietry options and lack of staff interest.

Chips Stone cold as we're our cappuccino. Lady who served us has no customer service skills whatsoever, no please or thank you, literally what you want, no smile or interaction. Should not be in this field of work if not happy to serve customers

Never have I been into a cafe with such miserable and quite honestly rude staff. The possibility of the lady taking orders of actually smiling was a non event. When actually paying for our coffees the words "Please" and "Thankyou" were not in the ladies vocabulary..... You are in the 'hospitality ' industry ladies, be hospitable . Costa next time.

Delicious tuna baguette and iced coconut latte, made fresh to order. Good selection on the menu, not many obvious options for vegans though unfortunately.

I've been trying to come to this cafe more often for the past months, suport small businesses and all that. But I have to say is a bit of a let down. Today I ordered a bacon and egg bagel, egg done both sides....I got a runny egg bagel..no bacon🤣 staff seems a bit bored all the time and really not in the mood for anything.

Always pop in here when I'm in Worthing for a bacon sandwich and a pot of tea - extensive menu for a cafe. Prices are very reasonable and the staff are always welcoming. Love this place

Coronation Jacket with salad and Ham/Cheese toasties. Absolutely massive portion and really nice. Well done Lorraine and team!

Arrived around lunchtime for a coffee and lunch. Prices were decent for centre of town. Sandwiches were good value and there was a lot for the price. Very tasty! Service quick. This was my first time here and I was with a party of 5. There are a lot of tables and chairs outside so ideal if weather fine. Will definately return.

Had a bacon roll and coffee here on a Saturday morning. Cafe was quite busy but we managed to get a seat inside and food service was reasonably prompt considering. Friendly atmosphere with several chatty regular customers sitting around us. Food good and reasonably priced, staff pleasant and also noticed that cafe is dog friendly. We have visited here before and would happily do so again.

Great breakfast I'd say beat around worthing

Lovely place staff were great and helpful they made sure we had everything, Breakfast nicely cooked and we'll presented coffee was nice and they were willing to substitute one item for another

Wow just moved to Worthing and found this little secret today .All day breakfast my hubby and I had was amazing super tasty and chef and staff was so friendly and helpful. If I could recommend that everyone deserves a great breakfast any day especially when so tasty and such inviting food to eat .Will certainly will be revisiting again just to check out the rest of the menu .

Great place for food and coffee

Coffee good but could have been hotter, however I know this is s personal preference. Also makes a nice change from the 'chains'. Cheaper too which is a bonus 😀

My wife and I had an hour to kill so decided to stop for lunch. The coffee shop next door was rammed so took a chance here. I had a mushroom and ham omelette with salad and a large coffee, it was absolutely delicious. Granted we were there lunchtime so there was small delay, but that is to be expected. For a bite to eat or just a coffee, highly recommended

Nice food but slightly small portions

Uncomfortable seats and annoyingly loud background music. It was empty at the time 9.30. Staff very pleasant and accommodating.

Nice wholesome food and drinks. Most food is made on the premises, coleslaw is excellent. Very reasonable prices as well, unlike Costa next door.

Popped in for a small breakfast. Service was polite and speedy. My breakfast was cooked well with a great quality sausage at a budget price. Lovely pot of tea with extra hot water so I didn’t have to ask for more which I really appreciate. Had a lovely chat to the owners who were very friendly. Dog friendly, serves vegan, veggie and gluten free. Lovely relaxing place to sit outside and soak up the September sun. I’ll be back.

Had the coronation chicken sandwich earlier today. Normally this is absolutely 💯 but today's was awful so strong and did not taste like before. We are both now suffering with grippy tummy ache and keeping our fingers crossed 🤞 do not get ill.

What a wonderful little cafe! Almost all the sandwiches and hot food is available as a Gluten-free option! Even the chips are cooked in separate cooking oil! The food is very tasty and well cooked, perfect! Tthe staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and the cafe has extensive outside seating with sea views. Excellent, cannot rate it highly enough!

Give it a go! Costa was heaving so I popped next door to save the wait. So glad I did. Lovely soya cappuccino "packing a good punch", friendly staff and plenty of space to sit.

Absolutely brilliant meal! Very polite staff, great price and very very tasty. Definitely going to bring my coeliac son here next time as they are very clued up on gluten free food preparation.

Two sausages, two slices of toast, two fried eggs, baked beans, hash brown and a pot of tea for £6.95. Eggs were soft and fluffy on the outside (the way I like mine) and slightly runny yoke, the hash brown was lightly crisp, the toast was lightly toasted but thoroughly toasted, the sausages were just as perfect and the whole breakfast was perfectly cooked. My only critique, the bacon was sliced and not streaky but an unbelievably outstanding breakfast, regardless of my preferences. My compliments to the chef

I was looking for a quality local cafe with that customer service you only find in authentic local places and that’s exactly what I found. They even made me a bespoke sandwich that wasn’t off the menu. Friendly staff, quality sandwich, good price. Lovely place

Great food and drink and the staff are super friendly. Manager is caeliac so knows all about the challenges of being gluten free and his wife has nailed it by preparing and cooking delicious foods

Our food today was average, our service was not. When we asked if we could eat upstairs the woman shrugged & said "if you want". Our food arrived quite quickly, just cheese toasties but there was a nice side salad but no knives & forks. Having never been here I wasn't aware that I should have collected them from somewhere, but, where? We would have liked some sugar for our tea but again didn't know I had to find it for myself, there were plenty of sauce sachets upstairs but no sugar. When we left my friend thought she had dropped here ring upstairs. We asked that if they found it to please keep it safe & I would call in next week to check, the same woman who served us just reluctantly agreed but I don't think she was going to be bothered to remember. I felt like it would be too much effort for her. We won't go back & my friend found her ring.

Staff need to get some personality or find a job they enjoy,shocking,also,food is very average.

Amazing little cafe a good place to stop any time of the day

Firstly, I was served by Sarah. Sarah was welcoming, polite and a pleasure to talk to. I ordered a L cappuccino and a Full Monty BREAKFAST (to be clear), all of which were lovely. So lovely in fact that I'm still in the cafe letting my food go down whilst writing this review. The service, the food and the cafe itself are perfect. Not to mention the fantastic price too! Thank you very much.

I went in for a simple drink yet yet it felt very hostile, nasty looks from the owner made me not even want to finish my drink and so I left feeling unsatisfied. Don't go here if you aren't the boldest person, they will make you feel small and insignificant. The owner seems very full of herself and her boyfriend (I'm assuming with how intimate they act at work!) is a slacker. The food was bland and my drink was watery. Plus I'm pretty sure they delete all the bad reviews 🙊

I was working in Worthing for six months and pop in for a quick breakfast,the food was nice,when I told the lady the food was nice,she gave me a dirty look,when I went to pay,I said please and thank you all I got back was the same dirty look,no thank you just a dirty look,anyw way went to a place down the road for my breakfast every day for the six months,manners cost nothing

The owners Micheal and Sarah strive to please their customers. The food is great, the pricing is cheaper that a lot of other cafes, the staff are great, their experience in the way they serve customers and strive to please is outstanding. The cafe itself is better than others. The amount of tables downstairs, outside and upstairs is great because the cafe is always full of customers. Great Cafe for families and friends to go to for a meal. They also allow dogs there too. Now they are giving food from co ops to people in the community who have mobility issues. The cafe also did all the breakfasts, dinner's and teas for the NHS workers and the homeless who were living in the Burlington Hotel all through the first lockdown.

I have never encountered such rude staff. I think they should all work in another industry. The flapjack that I had was stale and rock hard. It looked like it had been left out for over a week. It was so bad I could not eat it.

Need to organise a better order system. I've twice waited 15 minutes for my coffee. The rest, about 5 minutes. That's after I've waited ages to order because of one customer in front of me. Also, more than once I've had very old, dry and hard cakes. Please keep your stuff fresh and up to date. And speed it up. Its a great location with outside seating and they brought out a free treat for my dog, so they must be decent people. I'd like to use this cafe more often.

Turned up here before a long drive back up north after spending the weekend in worthing. Did not eat here but were planning to, I am sure the food is lovely but the service from the woman behind the counter was not so. After waiting a few minutes we checked about getting a seat to be informed we needed to order first then we could go sit down, about to order a local who knew the member of staff came in and was promptly served before ourselves.

Lovely café near the beach. The eggs Benedict & skinny fries were both excellent.

A warm sunny day and plenty of people outside, but this place is certainly not to be recommended. The tea tasted fine although warm at best and the milk jug and tea pot dribbled their contents all over the table, but the scrambled egg really excelled it’s self. Hard lumps of cold rubber can best describe what was served up. If their chief can’t cook scrambled eggs properly, they need to recruit someone who can.

We had our family breakfast at the Cafe. Can’t say it was something outstanding. I ordered poached eggs and have to submit its not their strong point. The rest of the food looked ok.

We had jacket potatoes which were absolutely delicious and an superb unexpected side salad which was amazing 🤩 and the service was five star!!!

The staff at this cafe went out of their way to make sure myself and 3 friends were comfortable and well attended to even getting another chair so that one of the ladies was able to sit more easily We sat outside with the staff and chatted in a very relaxed atmosphere whilst drinking delicious hot chocolate My dog was also spoilt with a sausage cut into small pieces I would definitely recommend this cafe for the personal attention and friendliness of the staff In the words of Arnold Schwarzenneger “we’ll be back”

My husband and I returned here today. The ordering process is very slow as they make the drinks as you order rather than order and then someone else makes it. We sat outside and waited for our food, and waited, and waited for 30 minutes when we then enquired where it was. A lad went off to find out and didn't come back. We then asked for a refund and they queried the can of coke we had brought afterwards (which we were returning) with no receipt. Altogether a bad experience and we will not be back as we were made to feel it was our fault that they had not sent the order to the kitchen.

If you are in Worthing forget the other cafes. Please take my advice and visit here. Dog and human friendly. Possibly the high lite of my week here. Well done and thank you for fabulous MELTED cheesy chips, at last somewhere that knows how to do them!!

Entering this seemingly average cafe I was greeted by a hatchet faced server who was already barking at the harrassed bus boy/waiter while she barely acknowledged me. I placed my order. The bagel was like a rock and the runny eggs were not runny. I...

Our first introduction to Cafe Montague is the "dead behind the eyes" blonde woman who is a complete stranger to manners and in fact, joy! The over-riding sense (with the exception of the young lads) is that customers are an inconvenience. I was prepared to overlook the fact that my eggs were not 'runny' as requested, as this is somewhat subjective. But really I was worried that when the eggs appeared again they would have gone from the sublime to the ridiculous, as happens often when you return food for being over-cooked! My companion was roundly chastised by the "black-haired" girl for bringing to her attention the congealed and putrid mess that was the condiment-dish. I suppose she had a point as you would'nt want that Petri dish near you, while making sandwiches? But her quipp, "what do you want me to do about it"? was at best, unhelpful?

Such a shame sour faced assistant, 1 person serving, when we saw at least 3 staff members. Big q going out the shop not enough staff
