Tickled Trout in Harrogate

This review could be summed up in one sentence! Amazing food and excellent service. We found this country pub/restaurant on booking.com and as we had planned a day shopping in York thought it would be a good top off to the weekend to stop over and enjoy dinner in a nice establishment. We had seen on their direct website that the food here had won awards and so we thought we would give it a try and am sooooo glad we did! Situated in a pretty village - you wouldn’t just stumble across the Tickled Trout and do I am certain are reliant on reputation and word of mouth which was evident because the restaurant was full all evening! So popular. On arrival at the pub we did initially wonder if it was the right place because the exterior did appear to need a repaint observing from the roadside. There are some quirky touches which make you smile, the little tipis at the rear and the ski lodge with ornament pigeons on the roof - I imagine many a fun evening has been had there. We were greeted by Katie who was really welcoming and helpful and showed us to our room The Wharfe. The room was larger than expected with a comfy sleigh bed with crisp nice sheets. It was also very clean. The room key a toy lobster which also made me smile. The room was tasteful in decor with tea and coffee, decanter of port for a wee night cap. The only criticism i have is that there was no plug socket for the hairdryer and being only 5ft 1 was unable to see properly in the mirror near the window without being on tippy toes. Dinner was amazing! Such a variety on the menu - all sounding delicious it was difficult to choose! We had a cosy table for 2 near a roaring open fire, nice to see table cloths too. perfect. We opted for tempura prawn, very succulent prawns served in a pretty shell with an Asian style salad and we also ordered the haddock scotch egg. We have never seen that on any menu before and just had to try and share. Both delicious and sizeable portions too. Mains my husband chose the steak which came with home made chips - the steak had a yummy caramelised grill flavour to the outside and pink in the middle . I opted for cod loin served with spinach and gnocchi which was scrummy! We were so full we didn’t really have room for desert although shared the affogato. Service was excellent, all staff members were friendly and courteous - really nice vibe to the restaurant. We hadn’t booked breakfast although had hoped we would be hungry enough to try if the evening meal was anything to go by - sadly we were still full. We would definitely stay here again simply to work through the menu! Goes to show you should never judge a book by its cover. We did check before leaving on booking.com for availability and seems to be booked up months ahead - we will keep trying! Thank you for a great stay, don’t change your chef!

Stayed overnight with family, excellent rooms clean and well kept,food was first class couldn’t have had any better and the staff were amazing they were all friendly and helpful a very enjoyable experience,

We had been meaning to try The Tickled Trout - heard great things. They were all true. The car park was rammed on a Sunday evening. Lots of people know that they serve properly nice food. Great portions and service. Far better than most in the area. Loved it that the children could have half sized adults portions too - no chicken nuggets here. Fantastic ales too. I have found my go to place.

Always a warm welcome from the staff. Lovely atmosphere and fabulous food. Highly recommend but remember to book a table as it can get busy.

Came for a family wedding celebration and the hospitality and meal were first rate - chef pulled off a barnstormer with great salmon starter and best ever beef wellington main- no mean feat with a big group. Best kept Timothy Taylor capped it off ! Superb team looked after everyone so well. Thanks.

We enjoyed a lovely meal here after a walk around Wetherby. We booked through the website for 5.30 but arrived around 4, received a warm welcome and enjoyed a few drinks in front of the open fire. Our meals were delicious we couldn’t decide on starters so shared 3 (this was too much as portions were big and our greedy decision meant we had no room left to sample desert) Great place will definitely return in the future.

The price: Three courses £34.95. The food is not as you might expect for that price. Starters themselves were ok but were served without any bread, for some that might not be an issue but certain dishes in particular benefit from this rather obvious accompaniment, e.g. Soup, Hummus. Other dishes too would be far better with a small amount of bread. When the absence of bread was queried during the meal as it had been provided previously, the response provided was that they had experienced a large amount of waste in the past, so the solution adopted was not to provide any!!! However some could be provided for an additional payment if it was requested separately. In other words if we can get away with not providing any we will and won't incur the cost. At those prices I'm amazed that bread wasn't included A rather more appropriate solution to waste might be to reduce the portion, not remove it completely. The main course: Turkey, which in itself was very nice but was served hiding some rather awful potatoes that were lurking underneath. They tasted like something that had seen far better days ( I'd like to know where they came from just to make sure I don't buy any), unless it was the cooking that had gone awry as I'm not sure whether they were supposed to be boiled or roasted, they seemed like neither. Parsnips, carrots and sprouts, ok but all rather cold and certainly not generous for what was a large table of people all parting with quite a bit of money for this substandard fayre. The dessert: It's that festive time of year so Christmas pudding was the order of the day ... The menu author must not have tasted it. Christmas pudding should be a rich mixture of fruit with a touch of festive cheer and that's clearly what the person writing the menu thought they'd be serving. It was actually the lightest, most tasteless Christmas pudding ever, only the brandy sauce doing its best to counter what seemed like a basic sponge pudding of some sort. Overall rather pricey for what is pretty average at best.

Well I met up with a friend on a Tuesday lunchtime and couldn’t even get in the car park. We went in & realised why. Superb venue, excellent food & super service. This gem is well worth a visit and will definately be going again

Lovely pub and full of character. I went for a drink with my fiancée and it had a warm atmosphere and the staff were friendly and welcoming. There were lots of interesting things about the pub, from the food and drinks on the menu to the distinct parts of the pub such as the "ski lodge" where we sat to have our drinks. We really enjoyed ourselves and we'll have to go again!

Forty minutes between placing the order and food arriving. Not a word of apology from the numerous members of staff. Perhaps it’s the norm?

This was a lovely pub restaurant in a very pretty village. It was decorated for Christmas which looked very pretty. The staff were helpful and friendly and there was a lovely atmosphere. I had the steak pie and my friend had fish pie, both of which came with lovely vegetables and were delicious. We shared a pudding which was also lovely and beautifully presented. The restaurant was full on a Monday lunchtime. I will definitely go back.

Initial impression was good but went downhill from there. Roast beef undercooked & fatty. Breakfast was a joke, one small sliver of smoked salmon with eggs. Room had dead moth on carpet &soap not changed fr previous occupant. Bath towel far too small. Overall shabby & overpriced. Stairs need good vac!

Fanatastically cosy pub with rooms. Excellent dinner, and superb home cooked breakfast. Very comfortable room. Excellent shower. But the best part is the lovely, relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Great Yorkshire hospitality at its best!

My wife and I went for Sunday lunch on 1/10/23. Very nice pub, with great food and friendly attentive and helpful service. We both had goats cheese and roast beetroot followed by roast lamb with Yorkshire pudding and vegetables. Both dishes were good sized servings (lots of roast lamb) and extremely good. If I had one very minor criticism, it would be that the service was perhaps a little too slick, it’s of course subjective but a little longer between courses would have been preferable for us, but for others it may certainly have been fine. Very well worth a visit…
