Tickle Toby in Hambleton

A lovely little independent pub and restaurant in the heart of Northallerton. We were having a shopping day in the market town and looking for lunch came across the brilliantly named Tickle Toby. It was homely and welcoming with friendly staff and great food.

Bar staff pretty unhappy, food was okayish. Burger was basic. Menu has deteriorated, used to be much better selection.

Excellent food with a good range meals to suit all tastes very reasonably priced also offer tea and coffee as well as bar drinks the staff are very welcoming and friendly and do all they can to help

We've thought of going to this pub for some time, and today thought we'd try it with the family for lunch. The pub was clean, with a cosy and friendly atmosphere. Staff were all welcoming and attentive. The disappointment came when our food arrived. We all chose different meals, and all four were of a similar poor standard. My son ordered sausage and chips which were almost £10, he was presented with two small "cheap supermarket" style sausages with chips. The chips featured in three of our meals and although crispy, all had a distinct flavour of being cooked in old cooking oil, as did the chicken nuggets in my daughter's kids meal, which she refused to eat. My wife's sandwich, which it said came with salad and crisps, was probably the best of the four plates, although the trimmings amounted to a couple of slices of cucumber and onion as "the salad", and crisps were a small amount of what looked like the broken crumbs from the bottom of the bag. I chose a cheeseburger, again costing best part of a tenner. The chips were as the others, with that distinct old oil tang, the burger was very sad. A thin pattie, that I suspect was from a tin, adorned with a single slice of unmelted plastic cheese. Nothing else in it, ie pickles, sauces, etc. It reminded me of something you'd get at a funfair burger van or at a football ground in the 1970s. Lovely pub, nice people working there, but definitely not a place to eat in.

The one thing you can rely on coming here, (Northallerton) is good food . Every time we come down we eat here ,and once again had a good meal of gammon +,pineapple, gammon +egg.. Staff friendly and very helpful. We did not know they had a side entrance with a ramp, and was told as such, so made it easier for my mum and her rollator going out ,rather than negotiating the steps.Would recommend if looking for a good lunchtime meal. Dogs also are welcome here.

Terrible decor inside. Completely lacking in any quality or atmosphere. Used to be a great pub back in the day. Will not be going back.

I visit the pub once a week or so. If you're planning on washing hands expect cold water. They haven't had hot water for years!! Most of the staff seem to think they're part of customer groups and interrupt conversations. And one in particular lavks bar service etiquette. Beers and lagers are good. So that's cool. More habit than experience takes us there.

Great food and loads of choice.

Avoid! A terrible kraft cheese burger, soggy fries and cheap bread bun. Not really edible. I would not recommend and was very disappointed.

We had lunch I had gammon egg an chips wife had chicken curry with rice both meals absolutely delicious..Will definitely be back.

Top up shop and petrol. Usual quality and service. Parking ok.

Admittedly not a regular, once a week or so, but for aa second or so thought I'd walked into the wrong pub. The price rise is eye watering. 35p to 45p a pint and don't even mention the wine and spirits. Wouldn't mind so much if they'd employed new staff. Thw barmaid lacks volume control. The k8d who took over felt the need to share his love tattoos with people who clearly didn't care.

The most miserable staff I have ever experienced. Food okay, not great. Long wait but not a problem for us although could be for others. A smile costs nothing🤣

The Tickle Toby Inn is clearly a popular local boozer and we certainly like it. Although this is clearly a no frills pub that has a target clientele of people who want a pub atmosphere and simple, traditional food, the company have put commendable effort into the design and decor of the pub. This is a very smart and modern looking pub that somehow manages to retain a pleasingly old fashioned feel to it. Good atmosphere, friendly service and decent beer.

Our favourite place to stop for lunch when we're in Northallerton. Everything is first class and you get superb value for money. Well done.

Called in for lunch today, 12/10/23, it was clean & the lady behind the bar was friendly, bringing our drinks to our table. We ordered 2 mince & dumplings & 2 cheese & ham toasties, all 4 of us enjoyed our meals & pleased with the reasonable prices.

Stopped for a late lunch with my Mum before heading back home. Both had beef Sunday lunch, was lovely. Good portion size and value for money. Place was clean and tidy, friendly staff. Will be back

First and foremost the customer service offered here was second to none, congratulations to the bar man for perfection in his level of interaction and banter. Had only originally gone in to see if they had any real ale which they did and a quick half. The smell of food was very appealing and a quick look at the menu and chat to the mar man and we were sold on food. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place and will certainly return if I ever find myself back in Northallerton.

We've been coming here for years Saturday lunchtime, always guaranteed nice food, that was untill this Saturday 8th April. I may be wrong but we are guessing the management has changed or the chef or something recently as it was the worst meal EVER!!! We noticed about a month ago when we eat here it wasn't up to it's usual standard but then this Saturday it bottomed out. After ordering it took forever to arrive and the place was far from busy, I always order the same everytime I eat here and ordered the beef and onion gravy bagette with chips and side salad. The Beef strips were cooked to death, dry, extremely tough and almost inedible, hardly any gravy and the smallest portion of what could hardly be termed "Salad" tichy piece of lettuce quarter tomato three tichy rings of onion and pepper. Absolutely terrible, the best bit were the chips as these were ok but the rest was rubbish. Nothing lasts forever, we used to recommend the Tickle Toby to relatives and friends but not anymore and we won't be lunching here again, the end of an era for us. Complete waste of money. My advice, take note from the previous management when the food was perfect, Tickle Toby will lose more customers than it gains serving food at this low standard, it wasn't worth giving away.

Called in on a cold and wet Bank Holiday Monday and received a very warm welcome from the friendly landlady. The York brewery Guzzler was excellent. However, star of the show was the homemade mince and dumplings. The rest of the party had deep filled rolls and chips, which went down well. Well done to all concerned.

Really nice friendly pub. Excellent toasted sandwich with garnish and crisps. £4.95. Honest food, honest prices.

Nice friendly and honest food pub

I ordered the steak pie and have to say it was the worst meal I have ever had at this pub. It took some time to arrive . The pastry was raw . It did not look like shortcrust Pastry . It appeared to be microwaved. The gravy was congealed. I spoke to Cat who told me it wasn't the usual chef . The manager refused to appear to discuss the problem Told to ring today. I have rang 15 times and get an answering machine telling me I can't leave a message. Next time in Northallerton I will pop in but not for food . Poor customer service. Tt pastry

Great value food, home cooked on the premises, our mince n dumplings and steak and ale pie arrived 5 minutes after ordering piping hot on hot plates. This food is literally half the price of several other hotels across the road. Tremendous value for money and good quality pub grub cooked well. Highly recommended. We will be back.

Unfortunately we won't be visiting again. The food was more than basic although it was hot and the service was speedy. There was no working hot water in the men's or the woman's (as in the tap itself doesn't let water out) which makes me question how the staff are cleaning their hands. There was only one toilet available to use out of three cubicles. All the furniture seemed to be really run down and in need of some major repair. The pub also had a sign saying "mulled wine inside" but when asked, they said "the sign should have been taken down ages ago as we don't sell it now. All the staff were friendly and welcoming that's why I have gave it three stars.

The Tickle Toby is an independent pub, which perhaps explains why it is so smart and tidy. The decor is very much in the modern bar style, but it still retains the atmosphere of a traditional pub. Having said that, can I suggest that gents heading for the loo wear sunglasses as it is the brightest toilet I’ve ever seen! It was very quiet when we were in, but we enjoyed pleasant beer and good service and it’s clear that this is one of the best pubs in town.

Well kept beer, good service but the Sunday roast could have been better. The beef roast seemed to me like sliced beef from a supermarket that had been warmed up and the roasted potatoes seemed to be microwaved. All in all a little disappointing.

Marvellous meals,highly recommended, we go nearly every time we are in Northalerton in the middle of town.Been there again and as usually very good. Not much I can add. Try it and see.

Popped in for a bite to eat at lunchtime. The pub wasn't too busy and it was straightforward to order the food required from quite an extensive pub menu. The order was swiftly delivered and the portion size was quite large and it was very tasty. Not only was it tasty and very enjoyable the cost didn't break the bank - less than £15 for two really good meals

We had a really nice curry with rice and chips and it was massive we came out stuffed. It was a Monday lunch and enough in to make a nice atmosphere....the sun helped

Lacks a warm welcome. Miserable bar man

Not impressed. All tables were dirty and we were the only people in there. Beer matts all old and dirty, tables covered in salt with sticky beer stains. The guy on the bar was sat back chilling when he should have been wiping those tables down. Would not want to eat here if the bar was that dirty.

Visited on a Sunday lunchtime, as our regular place was full. Menu quite limited and basic, but we had the Sunday roast and a chilli con carne. Both were around £8 each, so our expectations weren’t high. Only a short wait for the food which was plentiful and very good, with 3 veg with the roast, great value for money. Home made Yorkshire puddings were delicious. Unusual decor inside and not to my taste, but friendly staff. Probably visit again when in Northallerton

We went to Northallerton and tried this pub on my Husbands birthday and we’re extremely disappointed There was a long wait for the food, it was cold and parts were dried up. A total waist of money and a ruined visit. We will not be returning.

A bit of a wait for food at Sunday peak time...was told 20 min wait , but turned out to be 40 mins... When food came it was hot, and home cooked . Very nice. Would go again

We booked a table for seven teens as it was a birthday party and they all were happy with the service and food. We, adults, had our meal away from the teens and impressed with our service from the staff from beginning to end. I have visited the pub recently and the menu is constantly the same. However the attitude of the bar manager is abrupt and rude. I have a Gluten free diet and find it difficult with the variety on the menu. The Manager says he can get some Gluten free beer in, then the lady manager says we can't you asked me that last time as though we are a nuisance. So consequently I sat with No food while my friend had a vegetarian meal. They was a Gluten free meal which is 2 bean chilly but I've had that every week. Overall the managers show lack of knowledge on Gluten products and have an, I can't be bothered attitude. I understand the issues returning from Covid and the limited menu, however a more compassionate attitude and educated attitude regarding food intolerances would be appreciated

Called in for a bite to eat on a day trip. Staff very pleasant and polite. I had steak pie and chips and my wife had mince with dumplings and veg. Both delicious and well worth the money. Drinks were reasonable price too.
