Walk out on Christmas day and found this delightful pub open. Serving draught Guiness and cider we were very happy especially as we were offered a delicious mince pie to accompany them. The place is beautifully done up, and they were serving Xmas lunch. The menu looked good so another day we'll book for food.

Interesting place. Water feature as soon as you're in the door and some tables have swing seats. Unusual but good looking selection of food on the menu that we didn't get to try, but customers coming out on our way in commented on how great their food was.

Owing to our train being cancelled and being faced with a long wait on a very cold platform we sort refuge at The Vale York. We received a very warm welcome from the Landlord and Lady. We were served well with hot drinks and mince pies in a warm relaxed environment. Here we could rearrange our onward travel arrangements. Thank you all for your kindness and hospitality.

A dated and tired interior and a menu that was trying to be something it's not, with underwhelming food. The attempt to garnish my fish and chips as if it were on MasterChef led to cold mushy peas dotted with spots of tartar sauce and micro herbs. Sad, since the fish was actually really good apart from the flavour of old oil on the batter.

Warm welcome. Place was empty. Pictures of food, menu and interior are incorrect for what it is now. Absolute rip off for you get. Beef ravioli from the appetiser was described as being served in a small bowl which was fine, until it came…5 pockets of pasta and a load of tomato sauce in a tiny bowl costing £11.95 😱!!! Absolute daylight robbery. I could’ve bought the ingredients and made it all at home cheaper for what I paid tonight. Dreadful. Had to ask for the bill as staff were talking then one left and the other playing on her phone. Won’t be returning! Would definitely suggest trying other places before coming here. At least you’ll get value for money and not ripped off.

We visited with our family and were made to feel very welcome. Great selection of drinks available. Looking at the pictures on other reviews the decor and seating has been renovated and improved. Is also dog friendly.

Would definitely recommend staying at this pub. The owners which have only been there 5 weeks were lovely and welcoming. The pub and accommodations where spotless and comfortable. Also our breakfasts and evening meals were cooked to perfection. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely return.

Lovely pub/ restaurant close to thirsk Station. Decent quality pub grub on offer and usual drinks selection for a pub. Nice atmosphere but what set it apart was the quality of not only the welcome but the general service care and attention given by all the staff. Truly a joy to enjoy a meal and a drink here.

Very good and quick service .. food was delicious i will be coming back .. they have friendly staff .. 10/10 was very impressed with there Sunday dinner and i had beef and it fell apart as soon as you touched it with your knife and for pudding i had the sticky toffee pudding and omg it was amazing

Stopped for one night the room was basic clean and the beds very comfortable. We didn't eat on the night but the breakfast was very good and ample staff friendly and helpful will use again when in the area

Enjoyed our visit on a Sunday evening, new management so were still getting to grips with things but friendly and helpful. The chicken wings were very nice and overall great value for money.

Under new management who are very friendly and welcoming. I stayed for one night while working in the area, the breakfast was top notch as was the home cooked lasagna. Bed was comfy, separate building from the main pub which keeps the noise quiet. I will stay here again next time I am working in this area. Good luck in in the new venture guys

Lovely pub. Had a quick lunch and it was very nice and the portions were large. Very clean establishment and nice staff.

Had a great stay overnight as we were going to Thirsk Races (10 min walk from the pub) very friendly staff and lively breakfast for the price we paid. Rooms basic, but for the price you pay they are clean and the bed was very comfortable. Would definitely stay again due to the great location to the races.

We bobbed in today for lunch. It wasn’t busy as there were quite a few empty tables and most customers were drinkers. Our drinks order arrived promptly and we ordered our lunch and this is where the disaster started. After over 60 minutes of waiting and 2 polite complaints our three fish and chips were served. It took another ten minutes for the fourth meal to arrive but they got the order wrong and served a steak pie instead of a steak burger. The meal was returned to the kitchen and after another 20 minutes the steak burger arrived. However it was not as described on the menu as it was smothered in cheese. In addition my wife could not finish her fish as it was partially under cooked too. The waitress offered to wipe off the cheese from the burger but this was the final straw following a catalogue of mistakes and delays. To be fair to the waitress she recognised how bad the experience had been and apologised and offered to wipe the bill. We got up and left. On a positive note the pub was nicely decorated, clean and tidy. In summary, best to avoid ordering food until they resolve the catering side of the business.

Called in on the afternoon of the 14th October, landlady was very welcoming and friendly. Went back on the 15th for a drink and a meal and was greeted by (Shelly) unfriendly and very unwelcoming to non locals. Was considering leaving but new staff started who were alot friendlier so we stayed. Food was lovely. Well worth the money. Highly recommended. Big thank you to the young waiter (Ben) who was very friendly and attentive, a credit to the establishment.

We definitely recommend a visit if you are hungry, particularly the fish and chips! Really friendly staff and good covid precautions in place. Food was excellent and really good value for money. We will make sure to stop in again next time we are passing.

Went here with my husband and 2 friends, we stayed locally at the Waterside Lakes. Had starters and mains, all of which were delicious. The standout starter for me was the Deep Fried Cauliflower...amazing ❤ Staff were friendly and attentive, would definitely visit again

Reserved table for certain time. Turned up and no table reserved. So we had to wait while they did that. Took ages to take order. Took 1 hour and 30 mins for the starter. Then another 40 mins for your main. Disappointed

Lovely pub, nice decor. The staff were great and so very helpful. This pub has been the most covid safe business that I have visited. Tables spread out, laptop track and trace system, staff not touching drinks and staff constantly using sanitizer every time they passed the sanitizer stations. Unfortunately a lot of items had sold out which I wanted to order but the fact it was so covid-safe made me get over that. Reasonable prices on drinks and food (2 courses for £12).

Highly recommend this dog friendly pub. Covid 19 rules make the life for staff much more difficult. The girls working tonight were working their socks off. They were friendly and couldn’t have worked any harder. Only had drinks tonight so can’t comment on the food. But the staff were such a credit to the pub. Thank you for your hard work.

Touring the Thirsk area and in search of dog friendly accommodation. Booking.com gave a good list of dog friendly bed and breakfast places but it turned out they were just for assitance dogs, so it was a lenghtly task to find a bed and breakfast place. Eventually came across the Vale of York Pub with accommodation in an adjoining annex. No extra charge for dogs and they are also welcomed into the dining room On arrival at around 4pm, we were greeted by our host at the door and all social distancing was respected. Our small dog was also greeted by her name and presented with a very inviting dog biscuit. Parking was available at the from of the pub, near our room. We had room no 4 which had an enormous bed (two singles linked together, so Queen size). Bedding lovely and clean and duvet and 2 pillows each, were also very comfotable. Decor very plain and TV on the wall quite small. Bathroom was fine and the shower was really good. Top quality towels were provided and also shampoo/conditioner/shower gel in the bathrom. I read a review that said it was noisey with road and train noise, but we did not hear anything. I would suggest that there be a small pull down blackout blind on the glass of the front door though. Our dog accompanied us whilst we had dinner and again our dog was allowed into breakfast with us - she was quite happy to sit under the table on the floor at each mealtime. It is obvious that the staff and owners are all dog lovers and made a fuss over our her. Dinner was amazing. Not alot of choice on the menu but we opted for fish and chips with mushy peas, priced almost £9.95. We were not disappointed at all and we can honestly say that the fish was the tastiest piece of cod we have ever had. It was enourmous! Well done to the chef as it must have taken alot of time to fillet and cook it. Half way through our meal we realised that this pub took part in the new 'Eat In & Help Out' Scheme, so our meal actually cost us just under £5.50 each. We had a very comfortable night's sleep and for £65 for the two of us and our dog for bed and breakfast, it cannot be faulted. Breakfast next morning was a full English and it was very good and served with warm pancakes and a large amount of toast. Cereals and fruit juice also available as well as tea and coffee on a help yourself basis. The pub managers were extremely pleasant and friendly, as were all the bar and waiting staff. We shall certainly be recommending this bed and breakfast and look forward to returning again in the near future.

Called in on a Sunday with our dog. The food was good and the pub is very dog friendly. All the staff were really friendly and welcoming. It was good value for money.

We called in for a drink and decided to eat because the food looked so nice , we went for the £12 meal deal a starter and a main , we had the ham hock terrine and cauliflower fritter they was lovely and loads , we then opted for the fish and chips and what a fish it was , lovely white cod and crispy batter , the larger is a very good price as well so will call in again .

Great, affordable hotel, stayed for one night. Room was clean, bed comfortable, breakfast in the morning tasty. There was a dryer, full set of towels, shower gel and even a hair conditioner) Staff polite and friendly. A few minutes drive to town centre. I can definitely recommend.

Choice of chicken or beef for sunday lunch or dishes off main menu.reasonably priced and you get a free drink from a limited selection which was good.Prices on main menu very reasonable too usual.bar fayre burgers scampi etc.Not as busy as it used to be on a sunday got a table no problem without prior booking.If in the area ok for quick bar meal.Layout inside a big improvement and sport on big screen tv for those wanting to watch it

We were having a big family gathering for my mother's 89th birthday. We had booked the table a few weeks in advance and when I checked the menu online there was no mention of vegan options so I let the restaurant know that out of the 9 of us there would be 4 vegans in the party. When we arrived we were made most welcome and when we were ready to order the chef came out and explained that he had made 4 vegan specials for us! The whole meal was wonderful.....brilliant service, fantastic value and my mother said it was her best birthday ever. I would like to thank all the staff for being so accommodating and would thoroughly recommend the Vale of York for any type of family gathering.

We needed somewhere to stay in Thirsk for a couple of nights, this fitted the requirements. First impressions not good, the pub was loud and understaffed, the room very basic. This was going to be an appalling review... The room seemed unclean, uncared for, neglected. We stayed for a couple of nights, the noise of traffic and trains seemed intrusive, and the breakfast was pretty poor. Decent bacon, decent egg, decent toast. But... Lousy sausage, unpleasant beans.DESPITE all of that, to be fair, it was cheap, easily accesed, had reasonable parking, so I probably got what I paid for.Please, management, look at the pictures and ask yourself if they are really something that you consider acceptable? Better cleaning and just a bit of maintenance would make a world of difference. Water from a leaking toilet on the floor, mould in the shower, dirty marks on the walls at the bed head, a missing tile.Is this a bad review? No. Just don't expect too much for your money and you won't be disappointed. I slept well, did what we came to do. This was not a luxury break, not a romantic break, we just needed somewhere to sleep. And we got it.

Visited this place recently and probably will avoid it in the future. The food in here is very good for the price - and the prices are also very good. Booze is cheaper than most other places and its newly decorated etc. However, I could not hear me mates conversation due to the TV's volume. There are two at opposite ends of the pub and both always have football on so that's what you are faced with. There were EIGHT DOGS in the place and some of them were being played with by their owners. I nearly messed my pants when a young but huge Alsatian dived up at me from behind the bar access. A member of the staff grabbed it and shoved it through a door. I personally have no objection to the odd dog sitting quietly by the owners feet but I get really annoyed when it feels like I have got into the Kennel Club bar. How people can eat meals at the tables under such circumstances beats me. I shall not go again.

Sunday lunch was fantasticThe lady who run the bar couldn’t do enough for us I mentioned gluten free and she came and told me that the gravy wasn’t gluten free and when I said it was fine she went out of her watt to go to Thirsk and find some gluten free gravy for me Thankyou soo much I really appreciated it and a fab choice of puddings that we’re also gluten free

I visit this place fairly frequently and in the recent past have had no issues however that has changed significantly. I wandered in on Sunday 22 September about 5pm and was greeted with something I have rarely ever witnessed. There were FIVE dogs in the bar and FOUR were significantly large. At least my knee height. Every dog started barking so it sounded like the Battersea Dogs Home and three of the hounds although on a lead looked as if they could carry me on their backs to town. The noise was awful on top of high volume football on one of the TV's. The noise was awful and definitely a concern for those who had their children eating at a table. I have never been in such a complete disaster of management in my entire life except in India!!This was a definite Health and Safety issue and should be reported. I will notify the company that owns it. I shall not return and advise anyone who does not like the stink of wet howling dogs to avoid it as well.

The food and service was great here. I had tomato pasta which came with garlic bread and salad and my partner had a chicken burger which came with chips and salad and with 2 drinks it only came to under £12. It was really nice. Deffinatley recommend.

The Vale of York is at Carlton Minniot on the main road into Thirsk. It is 800 yards from the railway station andapproximately half a mile to Thirk race course. The Vale of York has also got a bed and breakfast facilities which has recently undergone refurbishments and only opened April 2019. It is a credit to its new owners Victoria Nolan and Mark Cohman

First time I’ve been in 7 years the whole place has had a big revamp, the staff are really friendly the food is really good and at a great price.

We decided to try The Vale of York for Sunday lunch having heard mixed thoughts on it since the refurbishment and change of management.

Returned from Vale of York the other day and have to say we will not be heading back! New Landlady was lovely when booking but when an elderly friend who was queuing at the bar at 10.55pm and at 11.01pm the bar staff refused to serve him the land lady came down and went crazy, swearing, shouting and basically saying she doesn’t need our trade! She then told the elderly friend he was out in the morning! Not sure if she had been drinking but we will not be returning! Been going here for 20 years and never had a problem until change of ownership!

Our first visit to this part of Yorkshire but certainly not the last. The Vale of York was a fabulous place to stay, nice clean room, fantastic food and drinks very reasonably priced. Our hosts Vicky and Mark made our stay something to remember and will definitely be visiting again in the near future.

We had two meals for nine ninety five pence. Steak pie chips and peas and Steak Burger with chips and coleslaw. Very quickly served and very good value. Pub was busting up as we left,would have stayed for another drink but we had the car with us.

Absolutely Fantastic ! Just come back from a night's Stay at the Vale Of York with friends. We went to Thirsk Racecourse (0.8) Mile away so the Vale Of York was very Near By. The staff were all well-mannered and the owners where very welcoming. The Drinks where very Cheap and the Atmosphere was Excellent. Nice beer garden that was child friendly was also great. The Accomodation was recently Re-furbished along with the Hotel. Decoration was tastefully done! Would highly recommend anyone to stay at the Vale Of York. We where so impressed with the whole stay that we booked again for next year! And also the Breakfast was great. Hats of to the Chef ;-) If i could of given a score over 10 then i would of done. We Arrived at 7.35pm on a Thursday evening, we asked about ordering food, while being served our drinks. The bar lady took we asked took about 5 mins asking another 2 members of staff one said 8pm but check with another member of staff, this could have been the Chef. She then came back and said “we stop serving at 7.30pm”

Staying local in a caravan we decided to pop in for some food and drinks. Staff very friendly and the food was very nice, not expensive at all. We will definitely be calling in again on our next trip.

Called in at 12 on opening the three of us had the all day breakfast and it was absolutely amazing, we all agreed it's the best breakfast we've had, everything was clearly cooked to order and served perfectly. The new owners are fantastic, we would recommend eating here to anyone and can't wait to go back and try other things from the menu, the prices are more than fair and it's a lovely place to sit with a nice atmosphere, there's a large well kept area outside, this place is a winner 5 stars

Booked in for an evening meal, went to our table waited ages on drinks order being taken, I eventually went to the bar to then be told all drinks & food orders to be made st the bar, was not informed of this at all so very disappointed. Placed our order, good selection of meals on the menu, had a long wait for the food to arrive & sadly it was very average frozen pub food, certainly nothing freshly home cooked so exceptionally disappointed

My partner and I called in as we've passed may times, but never been in. We shan't be passing by without stopping in the future.

Walked here for just a drink from our B&B; along the road. Nice outside seating. Good choice of beers and very good prices (just £5.45 for a pint of Moretti plus a pint of John Smith’s!).

We used to go to the vale of York every Sunday but since the place has been refurbished and new staff the Sunday dinners are terrible. There is no longer a carvery. The plated Sunday dinner portions are tiny. The beef was not the best either. The size difference between adult and child portion was about 2 carrots. There is 4 regular customers not returning!

Having stayed at the vale over the last 4 years and reading the comments some of which I agree with the pub has had a major refurbishment and is virtually unrecognisable,rooms have been decorated .The new people in charge Mark&Vicky; have changed the food menu ,more choice of beer and most importantly they make you very welcome and all the staff are excellent ,I would certainly recommend a stay wether it be one night or more we stayed for a week and booked again for next year

Called into this pub for a quick drink....2 hours later still there!! Looks likenit has recently been refurbished, clean and bright. Prices good and pleasant staff. Very spacious pub which serves food, but we had already eaten. Also accommodation available. Would call in again

Just experienced a lovely night in the Vale of York. Calton miniott.Thirsk. My husband is a wheelchair user so we needed an adapted room which is also a family room, Room was very clean, like sleeping on a marshmallow beds were so comfy.food is excellent adult 2 meals £9.95, child main,drink & ice cream £4.95. Two pints £4.95. Pub just been revamped looks absolutely brilliant. Staff really nice & friendly. Once we arrived there we dint move out untill check out time. Breakfast was second to none. Will be staying again whenever we go to visit our son & granddaughter.

Wow! Best pub/restaurant in Thirsk. Since it has opened and had a refurb, the food and service is 5 star! Very friendly and family friendly! Definitely making this our local! Well done to you all!

We are visiting the area and were directed here for decent meal. The place has aparently just been refurbished, I have no idea what it looked like before but it is now very light and airy. There was a friendly welcome given to myself and 2 kids. The food was really decent. The kids finished their meals which in most places are excessively huge for no good reason, these were actually kid sized! And at £4.50 for a main, pudding and drink it's fab. I had ham, egg and chips and a chocolate fudge cake. Just over £20 for the 3 of us including the drinks. We will definitely be back!

We recently moved into the area and have been in here a few times. Having seen some negative reviews since the management has changed I felt i should leave one. The pub is warm and inviting and the new manager, bar staff and locals at the bar are all friendly and welcoming. The decor is a bit dated but apparently it is getting a refurb and anyway I'm sick of these homogenous family pubs that are springing up everywhere and all look the same and have no atmosphere. This is a lovely traditional pub.

Booked a two night stay with my two adult children while visiting my other daughter in Northallerton. Booked bed and breakfast online through booking.com for £190.00 emailed them in the morning to let them know that we wouldn’t be arriving until 21.30ish.

I have visited this place a few times over the years and always rated it as better then average but that might have to change. The owners have changed Managers [rumour has it that the previous one quite because the owners decided to reduce his income] well its really gone downhill now, no internet access, no staff, half the locals not visiting and the outside lights late in being put on, I visited earlier this week and was surprised to find only three customers and a new landlady swearing her mouth off. Definitely not from North Yorkshire. Think I will give this place a miss in future.

Very dated furnishings and room had four single beds in, so very crowded. Unusual aroma in the room, possible damp smell. Breakfast was fine.

Stayed for a couple of nights with work, room was spacious and clean. Forgot my hairdryer but the barmaid happily lent me one for my stay! My evening meals were AMAZING and the breakfast was of a very good quality!! Friendly and very helpful staff. Really enjoyed my stay!

We stayed one night and that was more than enough. Room very poor. Strong smell of smoke. Shower unacceptable. Did not enjoy stay.

The hotel location was perfect for us as it was a very short walk from Thirsk station. We stayed for two nights and our small room was perfectly comfortable, especially the beds which is the most important thing!

We enjoyed really delicious pensioners lunches at this pub on a Saturday. It was very quiet and we were the only people in the restaurant area. The were no menus available but the helpful waitress had a list of dishes included in the offer (main course and desert or coffee/tea). The venison stew is highly recommended if it is available.

I will get to the point, pub ok, breakfast good, room grim. No frills at all, dirty and no toiletries, no mattress protectors yuk! I could not even sleep in the bed. Some may say you get what you pay for but there is no price on cleanliness. Only ok for one night at a push.

Came in for dinner today and we were booked in for 1pm. Someone was sat at our assigned table but that didn’t bother us as there wasn’t a great deal of people in. The first impression of the staff was rude and inconsiderate. As she said ‘there’s someone sat on your table so your gonna have to sit somewhere else’ it was the tone of voice that she uses with us. We were then looking for the table as we have never been before and another women rudely said ‘it’s there’ so we sat down and then got back up for the food, there was much option on the veg and the roasties were black. I will definitely not be going back, definitely over priced.

On arrival the gentleman behind the bar served us drinks and told we could go and sit down, as we walked into the other room we were very rudely asked by a lady if we had booked when we answered yes and were told to sit down her reply was ‘no, someone is still sat at your table you will need to wait’ which we were confused about as it was very quiet at the times and more tables then the number of bookings they had on the board. Poor choice of vegetables and food was warm but not hot. Not once were we asked how our meal was, just felt like we were being watched. Never had an experience like this and will not be returning.

We've been to the Sunday Carvery a couple of times but yesterday was just awful. They have three sittings, 12pm, 1pm and 2pm. The five of us were booked in for the 1pm and finally sat down to eat at 1.30pm. Despite my Dad having to stand [he's 73 and has Parkinson's], not once were we offered a seat and when I asked if we could just sit and eat at the empty table [for about 8] in the bar I was told "not really, can you just wait another couple of minutes". We were not the only ones waiting for half an hour, the people that were sat where we were seated [eventually] were celebrating a birthday and perhaps didn't realise they were supposed to eat and be out in an hour.

Eight family members chose to meet at the Vale of York for the Sunday Carvery. The pub itself is a traditional style with comfortable seating and a bar offering a varied choice of drinks. The restaurant is situated on the left hand side as you enter the bar and at the entrance was a board with the names of larger groups booked for the lunch with the allocated table numbers.

Definitely will be returning, went for the Sunday carvery, piping hot, plenty of choice, great home made food. Looked after by the lovely Sue. Worth a visit for sure

The young guy that was chef and ran the restaurant side of things has left,we had been a number of times and couldn`t fault it when he was running things,but today nothing was the same,not as many veg to choose from,we were not given as much meat as usual,the food was warm,but not hot,Yorkshire puddings looked like they had stood for a while,they have sittings 1 till 2 and 2 till 3 no time to have dessert and coffee,but we didn`t even get asked did we want either or both just slapped the bill down on our table,didn`t ask was everything ok,not even a smile,we won`t be going back plenty of other very good eating places in the area
