The Vale of York in Hambleton

The valle of York has an identity problem it has swings and cheap plastic flowers it lacks atmosphere it seems to be trying to be a city centre pub. OK for the odd visit but I would head in to thirsk you have more choice and the pubs have proper seats and no artificial flowers

We stopped here at the Vale of York, sun 13th +Monday 14th Oct, following a wake that was held there for us, the hosts ceejay & Paul, couldn't be more welcoming, and couldn't do enough for us, rooms were clean, beds comfortable, breakfast was very tasty, we came as customers and we are leaving as friends,we will definitely be back, such a welcoming place to be,

Had a lovely 2 night stay Stacey was so nice and friendly and made us really welcome, gave us information about the area which was very useful We had 2 meals there, cooked by the chef Steve both were delicious and very good value The room was quite small but clean Would definitely return

Didn’t eat but stayed in one of the dirtiest, roughest places ever. Would never recommend and will never return.

Fantastic food the best pub food i have had the portions were enormous the staff were helpfull overall a great place to dine lovely and clean would go again i cant praise it enough .

The worst food I have had in a hotel!! Rooms ok but don't bother to eat here, it's appalling and would not visit again. There's a chippy down the road in Thirsk.

Amazing, friendly staff with a great atmosphere. Food was outstanding! Drinks and food served quickly and promptly. The room was spotlessly clean, with a very warm homely feeling and super comfy beds! I loved the decor and cosy inside the bar with candle lit lanterns and fire lit tv. The staff was so helpful with everything, very polite and just a warm friendly family environment. I will be back again and tell my family and friends to visit. Thank you!

We tried a varied selection from the menu, which was reasonably priced. All the dishes were very tasty.

FABULOUS the Staff were first class the food well if you don't go your missing a brilliant service of Amazing steaks and the burgers Loved the swings and the baskets made from foil to take cakes home can't Thank you enough for your home from home care 🙏

Beautiful surroundings and service

Came to this lovely place for Sunday lunch, the dinner was absolutely gorgeous! Generous portions for the price, lovely staff and a great atmosphere! Would definitely recommend this place to anyone wanting a cosy family owned pub with outstanding service and food! We shall return again :-)

Had a lovely visit with family, Sunday lunch was gorgeous and the way the pub is decorated was gorgeous aswell, beautiful water feature and swing seats which were unusual and nothing like I’d seen before, will return here when I’m back in the area

The vale of York staff and owners are lovely. They really looked after us even though we are picky eaters they made changes to meals. Honestly a fab pub and they have indoor swings! 😄

If i could give this less than one i would, myself and my partner checked in last friday, the check in process was awkward as they took the phone off my partner into read the whole mesage and were surpised we had booked two nights! We were escorted to the room in awkward silence then left to it. A Delux double room, a bed a wardrobe and a random dining room chair, additonally with a mouldy ceiling, dirty bedding,an unhoovered carpet that was home to somone else's toenails and a dirty cupboard of a shower room ..... Obviously we didnt want to stay so requested a refund and saught shelter elsewhere... Upon leaving we had made a verbal agreement with the manager on shift that while she couldn't refund us there and then it would be processed in the week.... Its now been a week we have called several times and no one has been able or willing to help resolve the issue I have never dealt with a company like it and never wish to again

The manager of this place i would not trust his name is joe he is a liar and a thief i have had an encounter with him so i know what he is like do not give him anything you will never see it again

I ordered the slow cooked pork belly and chips. When it arrived, there was 4 1"square pieces of pork, of which there was very little meat. A very runny portion of apple sauce. And very thin small French fries. Not what I expected. Had I seen it prior to ordering it, I would have walked out. In all a very poor meal costing £21. I WOULD NOT GO BACK AGAIN.

We were down in Yorkshire on holiday as a family and popped in here for Sunday lunch. Firstly a lovely (huge) Sunday roast dinner - very tasty and LOADS of different veg 🤤. Secondly when we asked about best taxi to get home the waitress (maybe landlady) suggested a few to try but that if we couldn't get one she would do 2 runs and drop us all home!! I mean that goes above and beyond and deserves a shoutout. They are a very friendly and helpful lot down in Yorkshire and we loved our trip

Booking.com booked us into this hotel by mistake. I was met by the landlady. Who was also shocked at the booking as there was a wedding on which was fully booked up. Even though she was busy with this she went on get us other accommodation down the road.... Thank you so much on a busy work day for helping us.

Ordered the lasagne Andy the fish net platter arrived looked really nice. Partner started her lasagne wasn’t cooked in places and over cooked in others was told made fresh but obviously frozen and tasted really bad. As for my fish platter was really concerned that after some nice calamari I found opening my lobster tail it was completely raw and not eatable, they took the lasagne away to kitchen and it was removed from till, they to my fish platter away and waitress apologised but upon going to bar to pay the insisted on me paying filial price for the fish platter, shocked I paid and left, I’ll not be returning , please be careful if you go with raw fish !

The hosts are brilliant. Great location to Thirsk. Stayed in room 10 over weekend with my friend. The staff were really friendly and keen to help and accommodate our stay . The bar staff were great. Some really great beers etc and the meals were tastey good value for money. The rooms were clean and well maintained . A mirror in the bedroom would help. Beds were very comfortable . Linen was top quality. Breakfast was also good value. Mikes partner who welcomed us ( soz re name ) was so warm and lovely. Nothing was too much trouble. All staff had a can do attitude. YOU ARE GREAT. All had a teachable listening approach to things . Would recommend and commend Vale of York as a great friendly stay at very competitive prices.

Unplanned stop for food at lunchtime midweek. Fairly quiet as you would expect, but really good service, friendly and helpful.

This place is simply Outstanding. Food = Outstanding, customer service = Outstanding, atmosphere = Outstanding, people/ staff = Outstanding, Service = Outstanding. There is no other words to describe the Vale of York. We visited for sunday carvery, as it was dog friendly. The protions were huge and i mean huge, with a real home cooked feel. I don't think we have ever been this full!! The desserts looked really good and so inviting, but we just didn't have any room to even think about ordering any, maybe another time? There was such a wonderful welcoming feel. Even before we had sat down they had brought a fresh bowl of water for our dog. It is a real pleasure when you know people love what they do and customer service and care is the top priority. I would definitely recommend the Vale of York to anyone if you are in the area. It's top class. Thank you Vale of York it was a pleasure to visit!

We popped in for food, the staff were friendly, welcoming and attentive and asked us how our meal was throughout, The meal was fine but served with oven chips, the gammon a tad undercooked. The drinks were nice, draught lager was good.

Quality of food, cleanliness and service was excellent. Value for money is appalling indeed. I'm absolutely convinced i only paid £19.95 for two Sunday roasts, and we were very disappointed with the amount of food on our plates. "Where's the nearest Chippy". For some reason, i had to check the card transaction on my card the following day, just something about what happened when i paid! They took £29.95 off my card. THERE IS NO WAY I WOULD PAY THAT FOR TWO ROAST DINNERS ANYWHERE. If i had been told at the bar that that was what two roast were going to cost me, i would have walked away. They did offer us two free deserts, which were OK, but i'm absolutely convinced we were then charged for them afterwards in some way. Appalling value for money, be warned.

Food fabulous! Called after thirsk races for food and drinks I had 12oz sirlion came with all the trimmings . Husband had mixed grill ! Again with all the trimmings. Excellent service and food was outstanding and very well priced. Had dessert too ...rocky rd cookie and biscoff cheesecake...one word devine. Will definately return and try carvery. Cant rate this place enough. Give it a try you wont be disapointed. 2 very happy customers Cheers guys great end to a fab day 👍👍

Went for a Sunday roast and the roast was freezing cold The stuffing had kidney beans in it The roast potatoes was hard and uncooked Staff was very rude and homophobic towards me which caused me very distressed and upsetting The manager tried to attack me The pub was very empty The toilet was very dirty and unhygienic Will definitely not be coming here again and would recommend anyone else not to

Me and my partner have started going here regularly for our weekly outing for lunch. We always enjoy ourselves when we do and we recommend the ploughman's platter

Absolutely gorgeous place rooms are lovely and clean beds really comfy .Food was beautiful and great value for money .staff were warm and welcoming, and nothing was too much trouble for them. Thank you for a lovely stay we will be returning

Overpriced, we had the ploughman's meal for 2 I can honestly say have never seen 2 pieces of cheese cut so small and thin and was nothing like a ploughman's hardly enough to feed 1 person!!. Certainly not worth the money and not fresh food.😢

We chose our meals and also had to pay straightaway. Our meals arrived quickly and all looked very nice. My husband had the vale burger which he said the bread bun was stale or it had been defrosted in the microwave so was hard, the inside burger and salad were very good. My daughter had lasagna which she said was nice. I had hunters chicken. I was a little confused and disappointed as it was just a chicken breast covered in melted cheese woth a bitbof bacon. No BBQ sauce under or over the cheese which is what hunters chicken is supposed to be. The chicken was dry and hard around the outside too. We had desserts ....choc brownie x 2 one with a scoop of ice-cream and one with cream , no effort had gone into presentstion at all, and 1 brandie snap basket filled with one scoop of ice-cream. A few blueberries and strawberries. They definitely were not worth the £6 each price and wish we hadn't bothered. Considering the most expensive thing on the menu is chateaubriand at £65 the puddings would be an embarrassment if served after having that. Our total bill including drinks was £66.50. I know things have gone up, but you expect the food to be excellent in a pub that also serves an expensive menu. The food was almost average. We definitely won't be going again which is a shame as it's our local and we like to eat out regularly.

Had Sunday lunch carvery, only thing we don't like is they serve the veg you can't help yourself 😭

We had a fantastic time today with my niece (who is two), and Esther was amazing from the start to finish. We had a cheeseboard, Prosecco tree and a kids meal! Everything was fantastic, we didn’t have cash for a tip but we will next time!

What a wonderful place to eat. The service is excellent, the staff very friendly and the prices offer great value. The inside is brilliant.

We were trying to find somewhere dog friendly and open for lunch on a Monday. We stumbled on The Vale of York on our way to Ripon. The lady behind the bar was absolutely lovely and couldn’t do enough. They even made me a sandwich that wasn’t on the menu to satisfy my vegetarian needs. My partner had steak pie with veg and mash and thoroughly enjoyed that too.

This place looks reasonable from the outside, could do with a few planters to brighten it up.when you enter the foyer there is a cheap looking water display and if you enter what should be the Lounge area you are met with a monstrosity of two swings side by side covered with cheap plastic flowers (awful) and again cheap plastic flowers around the bar servery (again awful), only one real ale, not to my taste! So had a Guinness nice ' but could not wait to leave

Stayed for two nights. Staff were lovely, though they didn’t know we were booked in through booking.com, seemed a little disorganised. Had food on first night which was lovely. However, the room was a let down. Shower room was tired & not very clean at all & there was a yellow stain on the single bed bed sheet, thankfully we didn’t have to use it. Bedding did not fit bed ( double sheet & duvet on king size bed ).

We visited for a drink after a long walk and decided to return the following night for a meal. I was slightly disappointed as the menu we were shown wasn't on. Was looking forward to a t bone steak 😋. We ate from the daytime menu, which was reasonably priced . Steak pie ,mash, and veg was yummy, and the pizza looked amazing . We would visit again 100% if we were in the area .My little girl loved the swinging chairs and a nice water feature gave a relaxing feeling 🙂

Good staff, good food, plenty of it, nice surroundings, just on the outskirts of Thirsk. Well worth a visit, definitely go again.

Monday Mar 25th 2024. I missed an earlier train back to London. The next one was not until later that afternoon. I asked some people at the station if they could recommend anywhere to eat ... I was pointed to a place called the Vale of York ... a five minute walk from Thirsk Railway station. First impressions last. I was served by a lady named Amy, very chatty and recommended the soup and the Vale Burger ... It was FAR better than I expected and wonderfully presented. The pics I'm attaching are video screen grabs. A REALLY positive experience!

The staff were fantastic when we told them we needed something to eat when we only had 45 minutes before our train left Thirsk Station. They packed up pizza and chips for us so quickly we almost had time to eat them before we left. Extremely friendly and helpful and willing to go the extra mile. The pizza was good too!

We stayed here in the family room for 7 days. Staff were really friendly and went above and beyond to insure we had a comfortable stay. Room was spacious and clean, there was a large bathroom with aid if you were a wheelchair user, honestly an 11/10. I’d definitely recommend staying here :)

Phoned in the afternoon to book a carvery meal. Very friendly reception from staff. Arrived and were the last people booked for the carvery. All the staff were very friendly and welcoming. The food was terrific. The carvery was served by two staff and the portions were enormous! There was a lot of variety, and even though we were the only people left the food was hot and fresh. The atmosphere was so welcoming we stayed for a drink in the bar after we had eaten. Would highly recommend the Vale of York.

So we decided to go and try out the vale of York, as it was under new owners and heard it had a refurbishment. So we booked in for the Friday with the parents and as soon as we walked through the door we were welcomed and made to feel like friends. The service was excellent, and two of us are gluten free and we had a very good selection from the menus. The owner took our order to ensure everything was put through correctly to the kitchen. And we certainly weren't disappointed with the food and quality. What was even better is it was all locally used suppliers. For the quality of the food it was very reasonably priced. We will also certainly be going again, and definitely be booking in to try their Sunday lunch.

The atmosphere and staff are amazing, highly advise trying the Beavertown Neck Oil, amazing pint, plus perhaps most importantly, the food is incredible! Thank you for such a good evening!

First time booking and didn't disappoint. Very generous helpings of starters (springs rolls, amazing). Friendly staff and good selection on menu. We opted to sit on chairs rather than the swings, but can understand the novelty. Would book again but not with grandchild as the swing would prove problematic of her wanting to play (3 year old) and the safety aspect. Prices were reasonable and food was presented beautifully.

Only been open 4 months under this management. Amazing customer service, gorgeous food. We chose the meat and fish sharing platter and it did not disappoint. Would highly recommend this place. Coming back to try the other choices.

Walk out on Christmas day and found this delightful pub open. Serving draught Guiness and cider we were very happy especially as we were offered a delicious mince pie to accompany them. The place is beautifully done up, and they were serving Xmas lunch. The menu looked good so another day we'll book for food.

Interesting place. Water feature as soon as you're in the door and some tables have swing seats. Unusual but good looking selection of food on the menu that we didn't get to try, but customers coming out on our way in commented on how great their food was.

Owing to our train being cancelled and being faced with a long wait on a very cold platform we sort refuge at The Vale York. We received a very warm welcome from the Landlord and Lady. We were served well with hot drinks and mince pies in a warm relaxed environment. Here we could rearrange our onward travel arrangements. Thank you all for your kindness and hospitality.

A dated and tired interior and a menu that was trying to be something it's not, with underwhelming food. The attempt to garnish my fish and chips as if it were on MasterChef led to cold mushy peas dotted with spots of tartar sauce and micro herbs. Sad, since the fish was actually really good apart from the flavour of old oil on the batter.

Warm welcome. Place was empty. Pictures of food, menu and interior are incorrect for what it is now. Absolute rip off for you get. Beef ravioli from the appetiser was described as being served in a small bowl which was fine, until it came…5 pockets of pasta and a load of tomato sauce in a tiny bowl costing £11.95 😱!!! Absolute daylight robbery. I could’ve bought the ingredients and made it all at home cheaper for what I paid tonight. Dreadful. Had to ask for the bill as staff were talking then one left and the other playing on her phone. Won’t be returning! Would definitely suggest trying other places before coming here. At least you’ll get value for money and not ripped off.

We visited with our family and were made to feel very welcome. Great selection of drinks available. Looking at the pictures on other reviews the decor and seating has been renovated and improved. Is also dog friendly.

Food nice but weirdly empty place.

When we arrived we were hit with a foul smell of what i assume is drains, the decor looked cheap and the swing seats looked out of place. The menu looked great, but when asked for a rough size of the chateaubriand the waitress didnt...

Weird decor. The food was absolutely first class. Only complaint mine came without the potato side dish. Definitely go again.

Handy for Thirsk Races and railway station

Stopped overnight after races, as going up to Cumbria for a break. Room was nice and clean, bed was very comfortable friendly and welcoming staff, breakfast was basic but very nice and does the job. only gave it 4 because no evening meal but however...

quite a small room of your travelling with dogs and unfortunately there was no food on as there wasn’t a chef. However room was clean and staff were very friendly.

Would definitely recommend staying at this pub. The owners which have only been there 5 weeks were lovely and welcoming. The pub and accommodations where spotless and comfortable. Also our breakfasts and evening meals were cooked to perfection. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely return.

Lovely pub/ restaurant close to thirsk Station. Decent quality pub grub on offer and usual drinks selection for a pub. Nice atmosphere but what set it apart was the quality of not only the welcome but the general service care and attention given by all the staff. Truly a joy to enjoy a meal and a drink here.

Very good and quick service .. food was delicious i will be coming back .. they have friendly staff .. 10/10 was very impressed with there Sunday dinner and i had beef and it fell apart as soon as you touched it with your knife and for pudding i had the sticky toffee pudding and omg it was amazing

Stopped for one night the room was basic clean and the beds very comfortable. We didn't eat on the night but the breakfast was very good and ample staff friendly and helpful will use again when in the area

They had a limited menu when we went, but it was fine and tasty. Kids menu was decent. The manager and chef were so lovely and apologetic. When we left they ran to the car with the slices of pizza my daughter could not finish,...

Visited daycare before management arrived. They had been dropped on bigcstyle, but superb hospitality, couldn't do enough for us, great food. Will be back thus weekend.

Not a bad hotel. Fantastic hosts, very friendly and supportive to guests needs. We arrived at 6.45 to be told no food, when website shows 7pm, immediately sorted by landlord, totally understood the busy situation, but don't advertise 7pm if you can't accommodate it. Comfortable...

Enjoyed our visit on a Sunday evening, new management so were still getting to grips with things but friendly and helpful. The chicken wings were very nice and overall great value for money.
