Stayed in Thirsk for six nights and ended up going in this pub for a few drinks every day.Service was fantastic, Kayleigh the Landlady just couldnt do enough for you, COVID rules were well in place, toilets exceptionally clean and the Beer was fantastic x from the couple that sent the flowers

We stayed in a cottage in Thirsk for a few days and always stopped in here before going out for a meal. The staff were really friendly and it's a proper local, down to earth pub. The staff remembered us each nice and greeted us with a warm welcome. They have a happy hour and drinks are reasonable. You'll encounter a few locals in there but they add to the atmosphere. Would recommend popping in if you're passing.

One of the best places I have ever gone into the staff are really pleasant and nothing is too much trouble I'm always made to feel welcome can't fault them will definitely make it my local

Hubby and me met some friends in Market Place, Thirsk today 14/07/2020 and our friends had a dog with them. We all fancied a sit down and a coffee and went to a public house and sat in their beer garden. I ordered at the bar and then was told quite nastily that couldn’t sit in the beer garden with a dog as it was their Company Policy. We went outside and someone pointed out The Black Bull. Once the Black Bull was open we checked with the lovely landlady, who said, that we were welcome to sit in the beer garden with the dog. Please try out this lovely little pub as the landlady has only been in for 1 year and needs people to realise that this pub is now a little gem in Market Place, Thirsk.

the pub is now under new management, so any bad reviews will be from the previous management. Kayley is so lovely and has turned this pub into such a wonderful place. There is a good social distance system in place. Entrance through the front door. Order in box near entry,and collection to the rear/side of bar. Exit is located at back of the pub. Feels safe to drink here.Well worth a visit. Good selection of ales, staff and customers are all friendly, you can go in alone and you'll always have someone to chat with. Very welcoming.

After 4 months of lockdown I came for a catch up with friends. I had nice beer and renovation was refreshing. Also they have adhered to the covid 19 regulations in a very good way

chicken parmo is out of the world I would recommend it fresh ingredients and hand cut chips wow can not fault it and the staff were very friendly

After recently being taken over we went to try the new food on offer. We weren’t disappointed. Good quality ingredients at an affordable price. Definitely recommend! Proper homemade chips and the gravy was so tasty. Well done Kayley on what you’ve achieved.

Our kitchen opened this week for breakfast and lunches, fabulous value for money, takeaway service also available. We offer great drinks, cask ale, disco & Karaoke weekly. Folk Night every second Thursday of the month. A mens and womens darts team, mondays and Wednesday's. We are now looking at holding a quiz night. We hold event nights and value customers ideas and input. We have had a fabulous first few months

Visiting Thirsk for 5 days looked on line for dog friendly pubs serving food. The Black Bull no longer selling food. Under new management for two months. Need to cover signs inside telling you they serve quality food from 12 noon. 😳

We were in Thirsk on a Monday and were looking for a spot of lunch. Seeing the sign saying food available 7 days we went in to peruse the menu. The so called barman said "haven't you seen the sign saying we need a chef" then "We aren't doing food" - in very unfriendly manner.We went outside and saw a small sign asking for a chef in the corner of the window.Surely simpler to just remove the sign advertising food. Perhaps they need to advertise for a new barman too?

Having decided to spend a night in Thirsk we looked forward to sampling a few of the local pubs and it was rather disappointing to find that, certainly in the Market Place on a Saturday night, they all seemed pretty much the same. I suppose that when you consider that the same groups of people go from pub to pub, it’s not that much of a surprise really.The Black Bull didn’t offer anything different in terms of service or ambience and can therefore be described as just another pub.

After going in six pubs in thirsk this is the worst. Asked for Diet Coke and girl behind bar said normal or diet, asked for a pint of bitter and she had to ask what glass to use. A pint one I’d guess. Clients leave a lot to be desired wobbling about and arguing at 8pm. I’ll avoid it next visit to thirsk

I called in here for a couple of pints at the weekend it has been a while since i was last here, There were a couple of kids sitting at a table with colouring books etc and the language from the the locals was terrible but the landlady/tennant did nothing Not some where i would choose to go for a meal.

Real dog friendly pub, went in for light late lunch and had sandwiches with chips, very nice in warm crispy bread, real ales on draft, very pleasent bar staff and very friendly pub well worth a visit

Had a meal here during our visit to the area. Great service and excellent food. Very reasonably priced. centre of Thirsk which was good for assess.

Booked a table for lunch over 3 weeks ago, arrived on time yesterday to be told by the landlord who was not in a fit state that food was off as wife in bed....... no apology, no phone call!! Had to then look for another pub/restaurant on race day for 6 people!! Looking at the reviews think wehad a lucky escape!!!!

We arrived and we we welcomed very friendly good service. We both had the pie and chips the pie was very poor quality. However this is a local pub for local people the language was disgusting definitely not a place to take children not impressed that a girl allowed her pug to sit on the seat next to her and be fed from her meal. I can quote the same girl in aloud voice she said "she was sucking his todger" not language I want to hear thanks as an adult let. Hardly anyone in there (I wonder why) we will not be returning.

Arrived in Thirsk and needed a drink and something to eat and chose this place . The staff were friendly and the beer was a very reasonable price . Menu was a bit limited but we only wanted a baguette, so we ordered two. 20 minutes later the lady who took my order said sorry but she didn't realise she didn't have enough baguettes and would like something else. My wife had a tuna jacket and I had cheesy chips and we were so underwhelming it was awful. Don't know wrong you can get those two dishes but some how they managed it.

Had a quick drink here on raceday, but, frankly, not an inspiring venue - too dark for me and dominated by rather loud people

Went into black bull, a very locals pub, nice from the outside n inside with lots of artifacts and pictures, we did feel out of place there wen we first walked in, everyone looked at us, but the staff were very friendly and welcoming too and after the first drink it was better!

Arrived at the black bull gasping for some liquid refreshment and before entering we were accosted by a gent who was asking for spelling advice. After managing to get away from the unsavoury character we entered and it was like going back in time. We ordered drinks and sat down and all we could hear was foul language. We quickly drank up and left sharpish.

Me and my friend visited this pub January for a drink,I Carnt say much about it we was in n out with in 5 mins , the the bar maid served me , while playing the fruit machine the language was terrible disgusting the women from behind the bar (I think from Newcastle) strong accent

We were 2 wanderers cruising round the Yorkshire countryside looking for an authentic old village pub which sadly seem to have disappeared (or we didn't know where to find them). However, the Black Bull was one of the few places open on Christmas Day and we met some interesting locals who offered plenty of information about Thirsk.

Like my title says standard brewery owned pub, althoug cheap prices quality in product is suffered, good atmosphere in the pub however. Didn’t eat might do next time in area.

This is just one of several pubs in and around Thirsk but being right on the corner of the market square it is in an ideal location.

Forget the downbeat reviews, this is a Pub on the Market Place, not a glitzy holiday destination. Staff very friendly and food is good priced and freshly cooked. There is also parking around the market area.

Tarde de relax con amigos, personal cálido, muy buenos precios, buen ambiente alrededor. Justo en el centro de la plaza del mercado thirsk, fácil de encontrar, comida estupenda.

Llamado para un almuerzo rápido durante la semana. Decidimos tomar un entrante para compartir, nachos, gran error! Los nachos estaban claramente superficial, el guacamole era de una botella, de la squeezy topping casero. Podría no ser las coberturas dan caseros si el nachos era comestible.

En una tarde húmeda y ventosa este pub ofrecieron un lugar cálido para relajarse y beber una pinta bien cuidado. El personal era de lo más acogedor y nos hicieron sentir bienvenidos. Un buen pub, que no pretende ser algo que no es y lo recomiendo. Espero que mi próxima visita.

Called in for a few drinks. Really lively bar, friendly locals, a decent DJ and a great atmosphere.Not too many beers to choose from, but nothing to detract from what was a very entertaining hour or so.Definately would call back in

called in here for food,female behind bar let us study menu's then told us bluntly that each one of my choices were not available,might have been far more sensible to say that we only have a very limited menu or a sandwich,to be quite honest i wasnt that bothered as when i saw he skim the top of a badly pulled pint using her finger i was glad i didnt eat there,another helpful customer said "go to the fleece,mate" So i did.

Popped into the Black Bull with my Daughter for some Lunch today,Sat down to have a look at the menu,thought not too bad,went to order from Menu to be told that there was a limited menu,after trying to order various foods,and bieng told that they are not available,we went for Soup of the day ( Vegetable ) & Deep fried Mushrooms for starters.Followed by jacket potato with cheese and beans & jacket potato with tuna,The so called cook stormed away to prepare this meal,we mentioned his attitude to the bar staff and this seemingly is normal. we recieved our starters the Mushrooms to be fair were ok,however the soup was a can of vegetable soup from lidl or Herron Foods or such like,the jackets arrived ,the cheese and beans was cheese and i kid you not approx 6 beans cheese was melted and looked discusting,mine with the so called Tuna not sure where he got the Tuna,never have i had hot Tuna on a jacket potato once again disgusting saying he was getting a new menu,Personaly i would change the cook. Just the final thing they had there local drinkers in the bar and we could quite clearly here them cursing and swearing ,without any member of staff stopping it,would never go back again

A pint and a glass of wine was £9.25..a glance at the menu showed a 12 oz steak at £23 and an 8 oz at £14. Probably well cooked but this bistro style locale was not too inspiring. Useful for A ten minute drink before the film at the Ritz. Clean and tidy.

Nice pleasant surroundings and the meal was great.Would definitely go again. Handily placed in the town centre and easy to park your car.

Visited here for lunch, me and 2 of my work friends. We ordered food. Each got different orders. I opted for the omelette and I have to say it was horrific! No taste at all,waste of money. My friend ordered the pie it was basically a bowl with tinned steak and gravy in it with a rock hard pastry top, I wouldn't of given it to my dog. The whole thing was just big no no for us, to top it off we were served Pepsi in a coor's glass!! Definitely do not recommend this place!! Keep clear.

Went for food, had gammon etc was reasonably priced, just gloomy and dark inside, curtains a bit tatty too.

Such a warm and welcoming place. A proper pub! The prices of drinks are very reasonable and the food is too and very nice. One of the best pubs in tThirsk in our opinion.. We visit often but live in Hartlepool and make the journey just to just to visit this pub. The new beer garden is stunning.

Black Bull only been open for a few weeks but certainly made an impression. Shown to a lovely large table for four by a bubbley member of staff. There are three menus, French, English & Al a carte, you can mix the French & English at no extra charge. We had a two course meal for the price of the main cause. All four of us had different meals and we all enjoyed the food & presentation. The chef came out because it's the first gluten free diner he's had, even changed a sauce for me. He's Italian, has worked in France and is excellent as are the rest of the team.

Friday night live music,nice friendly landlord and landlady great atmosphere.we were in Thirsk for the races so it was probably busier than usual but it was all good and everyone had a great time.

Whilst visiting the James Herriot museum we wanted a lunch and popped in off speck. Made very welcome, lovely interior, very nice staff who chatted to us about the area and history. Ordered pasta and it was absolutely delicious! Fresh home made and so flavoursome. We all only had soft drinks and coffees and the price was incredibly reasonable indeed. Thoroughly recommend EVERYONE aspect of this establishment.

This pub had just been taken over a few days before by new management. They were just finding their feet but were very accommodating.

Looking at the exterior of the building I was aware that renovation was needed "I comment on this because it is a genuine pub or tavern". On entering the premises I was impressed by the effort made with cleanliness, even the old wooden floor that was probably older than me had a deep gloss shine. On placing my order at the bar I was greeted by a pleasant landlord who was for the want of a better description was on auto pilot. As I order the food consisting of 3 mains, 3 drinks and one pudding the entire bill came to £20. Upon the food arriving lets just say that all plates were cleared and we all appreciated the value for money the Black bull offered. To put this in perspective if you go to McDonald's it will cost you £3 less to feed 3. Need I say more!

A typical English pub with a nice atmosphere and pleasant staff with a wide range of drinks,worth a visit

We last visited this pub in November 2015 and had a great meal. We knew that we were visiting Thirsk again on New Year's day and enquired at this time if food was being served on New Year's day and to our delight it was, so we promised to return, and did.Once again we had another delicious meal at an unreal price. The chiken tikka masalla with all the accompanyments was delightful. The girls has the lasagne which again they were more than happy with. Nice pint of Mansfield on cask. The staff were great and the locals also made us feel welcome.We have never had any cause to complain yet about this pub and will continue to visit and eat here on our future trips into Thirsk and would recommend it to others.

Had a meal in this pub last night. 3 of us including drinks and 2 x sweets less than £25. The pub offers the usual all time classic pubs meals at an unreal price. I opted for the Chicken Tikka, it arrived piping hot with rice, chips, pompadom, pickle and nan bread. The spiceyness of the curry was just right and really tasty and plentiful. The girls opted for lasagne again served piping hot with a small side salad and garlic bread. They both commented that it was delicious. We will certainly eat here when next in Thirsk. On another note the had pulled beer was good as well.

Lovely place for evening meal. Went by chance with my partner, belly pork with scallops, muscles and venison. Couldn't fault anything.

We visited this pub on a Saturday lunctime and managed to sit at a table overlooking the marketplace. The pub is basic with a slightly limited but excellent value menu, which still provided us with sufficient choice. Food and drinks were ordered at the bar. When served (very pleasantly), the food was of good quantity and quality, adding to the value. It has no pretentions and frills but is definitely worth visiting for an excellent value lunch.

My husband and I ate here last week. My husband had the cowboy hamburger, and I had the Cajun vegetable burrito. A very clean and nice restaurant. We really enjoyed the food, and the perfect view out on the market place. The food was really well presented, and tasted great.

A typical dales town no nonsense pub. There is a good selection of beers but each time I've been in only one ale which is not brilliant but better than non.The pub has a really competitively priced menus which really competes with a well known pub chain opposite. Even having curry/steak nights.Worth a visit if in the area and I would certainly eat and drink here when next in the area.

I'm sorry I know this is someone's business but that was the worst food of my life!! How anyone could recommend this place I have no idea.Why not just do sandwiches if you can't cook as the location is great beer good.I really thought my kids would be ill eating the burger and pop chicken I had to take it off them, even the dog wouldn't eat it.

We visited as a family of 4 after a recommendation and we weren't disappointed. We had the mixed grill and steak and ale pie. Good quality meat on the grill and pie was tasty with plenty of tasty gravy. Kids had popcorn chicken and fish fingers and cleared their plates. Husband is a chef and can be hard to please but no complaints here. Good honest pub grub and well priced. The member of staff who served us was friendly too and advised of kids menus. Would definitely return.

Well dropped in for a quick meal. Few locals at the bar but nobody eating. Great position, place looked clean and presentable if basic. Let kids and dog in. Beer and coke was good. Food that we ordered was a combo for 2, hamburger and chicken popcorn. not much to get wrong here you would think! Well best thing about the combo was the mushrooms, everything else was under fried or cooked and greasy. Hamburger was cooked and flavourless but chips were the worst I have ever had, metallic greasy flavour. How do you get this wrong? Eldest child said it was bad, he is 9 years old! I would of complained but could not be bothered as in a rush and really not worth the effort if you can not fry the food correctly. Wish we had stopped at macdonalds apart from the beer.Do not like giving bad reviews but was easily the worst place in Yorkshire I have ever been too!

Hada dinner here with my parents, wife, sister and niece, the menu was wide and varied enough for all to have a good choice of dish, food arrived very quickly and was nice enough. For me the real bonus was the price, for what we paid you'd struggle to cook the food yourself. It wasn't the nicest meal I've ever had, but it was far from the worst and therefore great value for money.

Visited here twice last week whilst on holiday, nice food. Friendly staff, made to feel welcome. Its Marstons so you can have meal deals on certain days.

Comfortable place for lunch. I loved their chips (fries). They are served in a heated metal container and were delicious.

Called in for a quick drink on a Saturday night and was pleasantly surprised. We had heard the pub had previous problems but the landlord Brian and his friendly staff seemed to have cleaned out the rubbish and turned the place around. The pub was warm and friendly with a nice atmosphere. Service was great and draft beers well kept. We enjoyed it so much we called back later in the evening before going back to our hotel. If you are in Thirsk the Black Bull is a definite must!!!

we visit Thirsk twice year to visit relations, always go to the Black Bull for lunch and find it to be friendly, provide good beer and excellent freshly cooked food. We will back again when we can.

Approx 6 months ago i visited the Black Bull and after my experiences I gave a review on trip advisor telling peoiple to stay away due to how bad my experience was.....It has recently been taken over by new management who invited me and my family back to try out the food again and the customer service.I will get straight to the point, the new management team are amazing, so friendly and welcoming and will go out of their way to make you feel happy and welcome.The food was great, exactally what we asked for and the service was fast regardless to the pub being busy.We have been back since having our meal, this pub is child friendly and dog friendly which is brilliant!!Since Barbara and Bryan have taken over the pub has turned round for the better, its always busy and many of the old regulars have gone back to enjoy the atmosphere.I now can say I fully recommend the Black Bull in Thirsk with no hesitation!!

Lovely little pub in Thirsk's market square. Great beers, fantastic staff/owners.They looked after my wife very very well yesterday afternoon and evening, and we'll definitely be revisiting when we go back to Thirsk.

I like the black bull as it has a friendly atmosphere and the young waiter was very polite and double checked to see if everything was ok. We shall be visiting soon :)

Traveling with a group where I was one of four Americans. We are all post 55, nicely dressed with wads of cash to spend. We stopped in this pub for a few pints and pub food. It was clear from the very beginning that the management didn't want us there- Bar tender/waitress Begrudgingly pulled four beers and stated gruffly, I hope you don't want lunch-it's a 45 minute to one hour wait." The place wasn't even half full but we replied that we'll just have the soup of the day. "Same wait! I have to serve all these others first!" I asked, "don't you make your soup in large batches?" Anyhow, we didn't order; sipped our beers for the next hour while food was quickly delivered to locals. I now know a little of what the blacks must have experienced in the South during segregation...

Not a pub but smart restaurant we came back because we so impressed on out last visit and we were not let down! I had a blue fillet steak offfff the specials board probably one of the best I could have cut with a spoon there meat is sourced from a local butcher. The staff were brilliant even though the restaurant was packed the staff are quite young but on the ball.We will be back

we where firstly told we would have to wait 45 minutes for food as where busy serving 4 people, we came back an hour later and only we where eating/ordering food and was told again it would be over half an hour wait.we ordered 3 burgers and after paying we where told what ingredients where not going to be included in the meal as they didn't have it. when getting the food it was greasy slop, all 3 meals could not be eaten, terrible food and bad customer service as when collecting the plates we where asked 'was everything alright?' we replied no and all the comment back was 'oh well i will tell the chef' poor effort on their side and not recommended at all.

Found this place after pitching up at Thirsk racecourse caravan site. The food and service were excellent. We were only in Thirsk for 2 nights but had to go back the second night because the first time was soo good. The first night they had a steak night which was excellent value and the house red was great. Will definitely visit again !

A pleasant enough establishment. Clean, neat and quiet (at Sunday lunchtime just after doors opened) ! There was a little background muzak but it was not intrusive.Seating was comfortable enough - there being both cushioned benches and wooden chairs to choose from.Although the doors opened at mid-day it was not for another half an hour before food was ready to be served. The menu was limited, but, being a traditionalist - this did not matter . Said menu was chalked up on a supporting pillar. The beer was alright - Mansfield Ales, tried both Cask and the Smooth at 3.9%. That said, the choice of micro real ales was just that !The food - Roast Beef and all the trimmings - was excellent. That said, being a greedy pig - one does like to clear our plate - a few less peas perhaps ? !Service was excellent, but as intimated before - we were there first and it was not crowded when we left.The Gentlemens 'retreat' was clean and not too small, but , as be so often the case - it is perhaps only an afterthought. "Ole Negro Toro Treske" !

This restaurant was one which had been recommended to us by the hotel manager where we were staying close by as he knew we were looking for home cooked/pub grub within easy walking distance.We were very impressed with the prices and were warmly welcomed upon entry, it wasn't very busy as we chose to eat early evening.My husband chose a sirloin steak, beautifully cooked with just the right amount of chips/onion rings/peas.I had the lasagne which was piping hot with garlic bread and salad. The only downside was a dubious bottle of vinegar which arrived on the table, well past its date I would guess as it had lots of sediment in it.We were tempted into a dessert of cherry pie which I think was homemade and delicious, I had opted to have cream with mine but was disappointed to be served squirty cream, what a travesty.It was lovely to have our meal in close proximity to local men who, over their pint, were chewing over the day's events.

If you're looking for good pub food when you're visiting Thirsk, this is the place to go. The value for money is exceptional, and the food is cooked to perfection. The menu has a fair amount of choice, and the steaks are fantastic, it's good to find a place that knows how to cook it just to your liking. My family and I go on average once a week from Northallerton, and have never been disappointed. The staff are all friendly, and the service is quick and efficient.

We used this most days for our evening meal and found it excellent value for money. Occasionally the service was a bit slow but the food was good and have no hesitation in reccommending it for those on a tight budget

Called in for food with family and the dog. Friendly young man on the bar. Plenty of choice for food. I had nachos which was delicious. Not good unless you like ready t.v. Dinners. Everything from frozen, packet and cadbury smash. Our Sunday lunch consisted of Cadbury Smash, frozen peas, frozen carrots, frozen beans, frozen yorkshire puddings, frozen roasties, packet roast beef and tasteless gravy.

The Black Bull has recently been taken over by new management in May 2013. They have just introduced a new menu & everything our party sampled off it was lovely. New owner and staff very friendly. A better option for food than the spoons over the road. Give the new improved Bull a shot!

My daughter and I had a meal here and enjoyed all aspects of it. The people were nice and friendly and very helpful with what to choose. Ambiance was good too and the meals very, very nice. A little expensive but I would return anyway.

This was our second experience of dining here having visited the pub last year. You need to book early if it it a weekend.The menu is imaginative and fairly wide ranging but not over-priced. The rather limited wine list is however comprehensive. We dined this year in the smaller part of the pub which has a different but equally attractive ambience as the main area.The food, as last year, is very well presented and delicious. The service is first rate from all the young staff.We shall return.

This is a great place warm friendly place good ales (a man thing in our case) well worth a visit, would go back next time we are in Thirsk
